Title: arm slap at 30yrds.
Post by: cgeorge on August 17, 2012, 09:05:00 AM
I'm very new to bow hunting and my bear grizzly is my first hunting weight bow, This forum has helped me a ton in improving my consistency. That being said, from 10, 15, 20 yards I do not have this issue and can usually shoot very consistent groups. As soon as I move out to 30 I start getting arm slap on 4 out of 5 shots and they're all over the bag. Is there a reason for this to happen or am I just getting inside my own head at the longer distances? I realize that the aim is more difficult the farther away you get but the arm slap to me suggests something changing in my form from the shorter distances. I shoot split if that helps at all.

Hey CG

I'm having a hard time figuring how u getting arm slap at 30 but not at any other range....I GUESS maybe you turning your shoulder "knuckle" so perhaps u have a downward facing elbow more so when " aiming" at longer distance...?  I too shoot split  but Asbell method of instinctive shooting. My form remains same (good or bad subject to interpretation    :saywhat:   ) and I bore down on the sot and let fly.  A little more to it than that but you get the gist...   :archer2:

Interesting to see what other folks think, especially
Moebow....what u think Arne???    :dunno:

I bet you are raising your bow arm instead of leaning back from the waste....you are loosing your magic 'T'.

In a way I think your head is getting in the game a little too much.  You know that 30 yds "is a long way" and I think what is happening is that you are trying to compensate for the distance by overdrawing.  The overdraw is causing you to twist your body slightly and causing arm slap.  Are you also, hitting your nose or consistently shooting left at 30 yds.? - both are symptoms when it happens to me.

I'm not hitting my nose but I am consistently shooting left from that distance. The raising the bow arm instead of bending at the waist definitely makes sense and it's something that I hadn't even thought about. Thanks for the input guys.

One more thing you may want to check is your cant.  For me I was having trouble hitting left at 30 and longer and finally realized I was holding my bow more vertical which didn't get the arrow lined up under my eye.  When I cant the same as closer shots my left misses are solved.  I don't have problem with arm slap but I would think it could cause that as well.
