I have been back and forth for a while trying to decide between shooting split or 3 under and here's my deal...I definitely shoot better 3 under BUT my bow is tillered for split AND I can't get the bow quiet enough shooting 3 under for hunting. HELP PLEASE !

I too made the switch to 3-under in the past year after 40-some years of shooting split. All my bows are tillered for split. I raised my nock point 3/16", and make a conscious effort to put very little weight on my ring finger. This way I notice almost no difference in noise level. I feel folks make way too big a deal out of the tiller thing. This has just been my experience and YMMV.

Raising the nock point may help some but what is happening is your limbs are snapping back to relaxed position at different times so you're hearing vibration in the limbs and the string. Raising it up will help some but there will be a price to pay in how the arrow comes off the shelf and you will have a slightly shorter point on distance. I've never been able to get a bow as quiet 3 under as split no matter what I did.

reddogge is right. Consider what he said before you go raising your nocking point blindly. A good starting point is around 5/8". Tune for arrow flight... then use silencers if need be. Also, a bow sounds a whole lot louder when you're shooting it... have someone else shoot your bow at a target while you stand behind a safe spot down range somewhere near the target and listen to hear how loud your bow actually is... it just may be quieter than you think.

Play with your brace height a bit, on some bows it helps.I've never found any real world differences on how the bow is tillered just tune each bow as you normally would. As to the noise, it seems to me that it is "sharper" Vs "louder" and from about ten feet away its hard to tell the difference between the two.

I was shooting 3 under for 6 months. I got very accurate. My issue is sound. Wow is it loud.
I am headed back to split finger. I too, can not get the bow quiet.

I too recently switched to split. I was AMAZED at how quiet my bows became. It took a few days to reprogram my brain but it is all good now.

I tried 3under last night in the basement, i was pretty darn accurate, i was liking it, but then spent 2hrs today with 2 longbows i was shooting 3 under with last night trying to quiet them down, it didnt work, going back to split.

I've shot 3 under the last 4 years with ALOT of success and don't have any issuemwith sound...I shoot widows mainly and run my brace height at max about 9" with 1 set of spider silencers...I shoot a heavy aluminumnarrow to hunt with but no more than 12 grains per pound and aD 97 14 strand string...I would gladly sacrifice a little noise for much better accuracy.

I'm probably not any help here with my view....
I shoot both...
Some of my bows seem to "like" 3 under while others "like" for me to shoot split....
If I were a serious target shooter...I'd pick one and "go on with it"....
However...I'm an archer/hunter/experimentor...and I love experimenting and having fun....for me that means trying "everything"...
Friends of mine that want to help me "improve" my shooting always tell me to pick a style...technique...whatever...and stick with it and build upon it.... There is a lot of wisdom in this thought if the only goal is to shoot high scores and collect lots of game (animals)...
Again...for me...the joy is in "learning/experimenting".....
Don't sweat the loose :) Have fun with it :) ...not much help....right!?!?! :) LOL!!

Want a quiet 3 under hunting bow Tradcat??
Experiment with BH...possibly use heavier arrows...possibly change out strings...add heavier string silencers...like beaver balls..or as I do...home-made crocheted wool silencers...

What Kevin said. I can tell a differnce with arrow weight on sound level. Also the highest brace height that will work for your bow will be quieter. you could also try 2 sets of catwhiskers. I switched to 3 under a couple of months ago and the increase in noise is worth the increase in accuracy. Once I got the setup and release right the noice isn't much more anyway.

I shoot both ways without changing the nocking point. I think I am able to do this because it is natural for me to pull most of the weight with the finger that is directly under the arrow. I don't see any difference in noise between the two methods.

I found shooting three under that my bows were a bit louder but not enough for me to sacrifice the improvement I gained in accuracy . I have a Mohawk built for split and its not loud at all. I also have a Stalker that was built for 3 under. It is as quiet as any bow I have ever shot split.RC
