Title: callous on index finger
Post by: gringol on October 24, 2012, 03:21:00 PM
After a few numb ring finger episodes I discovered that I was holding the string too close to the pad of my finger tips.  I have since moved the string to just beyond the first crease of the first knuckle and solved the numb ring finger issues, but now I'm developing a substantial callous on the side of my index finger.  The callous is right on the knuckle where the finger meets the arrow.  The callous itself doesn't bother me, but I wonder if it may be an indication of some other issue with my form.

gringol,  It MIGHT be due to the string pinching the finger down onto the nock.  There also MIGHT be several reasons for this so here are a couple ideas.

First, when you place your fingers on the string, keep the index finger above the nock a little (maybe about 1/8 inch).  Don't start with it right on the nock.

Second, (more of a question) have you tried a finger spacer on your tab (if you shoot a tab)?  That will help hold the index finger up off the nock.

Finally, be sure that you have a relaxed string hand and wrist and allow the weight of the bow to align your hand, don't try to "muscle" your hand to align the string.

These are just ideas to try.  Bottom line a callus is telling you something is not correct.

Thanks, moe.  I'm shooting a relatively short bow (60") and draw just over 29".  I'm also shooting 23/64 parallel shafts with selfnocks, so the nocks are a bit thicker than the plastic ones.  I do use a finger spacer.

I don't think I have a lot of tension in the string hand, but I don't really know what that feels like...
