Title: Anyone used an Astra Archery Shot Trainer?
Post by: Long Draw on July 19, 2013, 10:59:00 AM
I ran onto this Shot Trainer which is used for olympic type archery training. Anyone used one of these or the Form Master? Any application for this in training with a hunting longbow, or just something else for a garage sale?

I just received one 2 weeks ago from 3 Rivers Archery, and I'm still doing the drills as instructed so I haven't actually shot an arrow since using it.
My initial impression is that the shot trainer will be very helpful.

But there are 2 things that they don't mention in the instructions, though.
The 1st thing is that the bow can be drawn without gripping the string at all...don't even touch it. This will help in strengthening and training to use only the back muscles for drawing.
The 2nd thing that I think would be helpful to some people is to use it with a clicker. Hey, if you're going to use the thing to ingrain muscle memory for a proper release and follow-through, why not practice a consistent DRAW LENGTH at the same time? Draw length is the one aspect of training that the shot trainer doesn't specifically address. Even with the shot trainer, inconsistent draw lengths could be practiced. Using it with a clicker would address that.
Whether or not you use a clicker, the shot trainer should help with problems of short drawing and not hitting and holding a consistent anchor.
I see that this thread started in 2013. A lot of time has passed since then. Is anyone else using the shot trainer?

It looks a lot like a Formaster to me.  Has anybody used both, and are there advantages/disadvantages of one over the other?  The Formaster is very useful.  Rod Jenkins introduced me to it in one of his classes.  In fact, we used it this morning in our regular morning shoot to demonstrate back tension to a girl who was creeping without realizing it.

I own an Astra Shot Trainer and have been very satisfied with the quality of this product. I haven't used it lately, but it works great when I do.

I don't see an advantage over a form master and since I made my form master out of junk parts it cost $0 and works.
