Title: Sweet and Savory Oatmeal
Post by: Snakeeater on April 27, 2007, 01:23:00 PM
This is really simple, but also really good with a mix of flavors. Here is the recipe that I use:

- One cup of water or milk
- One half cup of oatmeal
- Salt to taste
- Sugar or brown sugar if you like it
- A handful of dried fruit (raisins or craisins)
- A quarter to half handful of crispy bacon or other flavorful meat (bacon, bacon bits, breakfast sausage, jerky)

Bring it all to a boil in a pot, then let it simmer for a minute or so until it gets to the consistency you like.

The fruit and the meat complement each other well and give you a nice mix in each bite. Mix and match with dried fruit and meats to get the combo that you like best.

I am going to be putting the dry ingredients together in zip lock bags and taking it to the trad rendezvous this summer.

Jeff, I was talking about putting the dry ingredients in the bag. I use dry oatmeal, raisins, and some chopped up picnic bacon that come pre-packaged in the store. Sort of like bacon bits. I just add the dry mixture to water in camp and bring it to a boil.

Thanks Jeff,

When I first tried it I knew that I should add it here for my "trad" buddies, both up-above and down-under the Equator.

Sounds like a great breakfast to me, Larry. (I had to go to "water-like milk" though and it ruined my "every morning favorite, oatmeal"  - for me. Dad-burn it!)

Sounds like it might be tasty? I make oatmeal with milk and brown sugar, raisins,no bacon but I add cinnamon and butter to taste. If you haven't tried this ,you have missed out on a nice breakfast..... Any dried fruit from apples to cranberrys work as well.

I make the same raisin oatmeal, only I add chopped walnuts instead of bacon. I also put in cinnamon and sometimes I drizzle a little maple syrup on the top.
I eat a hard boiled egg separately to get some protein.

Sound's delicious and will have to try it! Not like your run of the mill pemmican   :)   plus it sounds more healthy with the grain content.

Alot of folks are talking about how they make their own sweet oatmeal. What is nice about the bacon or sausage is that it is a savory counterpoint to the sweet that seems to work well. Give it a try.
