Title: I built an electric meat grinder!
Post by: Apex Predator on November 16, 2009, 06:44:00 PM
I found these instructions online a couple of years ago.

  http://www.sausagemania.com/grinder.html

My father-in-law and I started gathering supplies.  We copied the design, but wanted ours to be a little heavier than the one on the link.  We bought a 1 hp motor, and used a #32 grinder instead of the #22 used in the example.  The base is a box made of 1" thick mahogany.  The bottom is removable to access the mounting hardware.  The motor starts off at 1725 rpm, but after going through the speed brake pully system, it's just right at the grinder.

We just finished it, and I think it's going to be the "bomb"!

It looks great! However I do think I would build a guard to cover those belts and pulleys just in case!~

my dad made one like this years ago, when he made his, instead of using the belt system, he put the motor to the grinder using s hard rubber connected with a "love-joy" connector, and yes these are the BOMB, we loved ours.

Ya that's what I was thinking.  Watch those fingers or you be grinding more meat than you want.    :scared:

You'll love it!!  We have a 1.5 HP meat grinder I got from Cabelas on a big sale and we can do a whole deer or hog in 20 minutes.  Heck it takes longer to bag and seal then grind.

Watch out for the pullys and belts on yours.  Looks like a bad place to loose a finger.

Apex, if you can fix up a hopper or such to fit over the entrance of the grinder, you could cover up the pinch or danger points.

Plus it gives a staging area for the chunks of meat.

Happy and safe grinding, enjoy!

All these sub-forums are great aren't they?  Unfortunately, no one knows they are here!   :)

I know a lady that is missing the fingers off of a hand. I asked her what happened and she said she got distracted while grinding a hog and her hand slipped in. It was a set up just like you built. Be careful, lots of places to get hurt on that set up.

That looks like the bomb! My dad was a butcher when I was a kid, I worked for him part time.....they had the guards taken off just about everything. The scariest thing was the electric tenderizer. Guards are good!
