I'm not sure moose falls under the category of dangerous game, but they sure are big around here. Anyhow, I shoot a 67# longbow, 26.5 inch arrows and 34 inch draw. Any advice on the type of arrows and broadheads I ought to use for moose? Right now I have 160-grain Grizzly broadheads and ash arrows with 5-inch banana fletchings...Comments?

Slim, Did you mean 24" draw on your setup? If you did, I also have a short draw of 25 1/2". I shot a moose 3 years ago in NFLD. The setup that I was using was a 63# recurve with the small diameter carbon arrows with a wooden dowel rod in the middle of the shaft and a 190 grizzly on the front end. I got penetration up to the feathers. The week that I was in camp, there were a total of 8 moose taken with bows, 4 of those were taken with stickbows. The one thing that everyone noticed , was that with a good hit they drop really quick, similar to a black bear. Bottom line is that your setup should work very well with a well placed shot.

there might be someting wrong with your numbers 26.5 can't be right if you have a 34" draw .
as to your wondering about hunting moose .if i ever have my name drawn (we have 3 day season by draw ,hunt with what ever you have ,never heard of some one getting one with a bow as it is really a meat hunt ).
i wouldn't think twice about shooting a moose with the bow i am shooting now 55# bear hunter take down or my heaviest a 60# windwalker recurve .with either zwicky or magnus heads .
here in New Brunswick shots could be longer than what i would take on a white tail but i would be practicing at longer distances also .figure if i can hit paperplates at 35 to 40 yds should be able to lung shoot a moose broadside at 35 to 40 yds.,different angles (sharper) would make me decrease length of shot i would take .
would love to get a moose with a bow ,don't think the country would be big enough for me and my grin though. :D :D ----- herb

sounds perfect to me Slim! Pretty close to my first set up minus the 24" draw.

What broadheads do you prefer for moose? I'm shooting [email protected], (cedar)arrow weight of around 640 grains (give or take), and arrow speed in the mid to high 180's.

2's eskimos...deltas to big, cant get the bleeders razor sharp so the 2's it is. Been shooting them for 12 yrs now and havent had one fail yet! From moose to grouse its all i've used!
have played with a few others but cant quite get them as sharp as I can the zwicks. I do however want to try the 3 blade wensel woodsmens on the black bears..who knows maybe this spring ;) !

I've got some Magnus #1's with a two inch cutting diameter I'm gonna use for black bear this spring. I'm planning on hunting moose hunting this fall with some smaller diameter heads for better penetration. Sound smart? Or will the 2"ers be fine? Any of you "old salts" have any input on this?

I hate to sound like the Magnus "expert", but I do have many years of experience with the particular head you're talking about. At 1 1/2" wide it is definately one of the big boys. I've typically shot through everything I've ever shot with the Magnus I (the exception to your situation is I prefer it with the bleeder). My bows have always scaled 70# with good speed to them. I think you'll be fine for moose if you're using over 60# draw weight.

Not an expert by any means but I will relate my experiances aswell. Seen a bull moose take one in the shoulder bone from a 70# compound with a 125gr broadhead. Wasn't a bad shot but the arrow did deflect off of a sappling about the diameter of a pencil, unfortunate but the good news is the moose survived as we saw it again a few weeks later no worst for the wear. Now having said that I have seen a bull go down after being shot with a 50# homemade laminated longbow, 125gr two blade broadhead. It only walked 30 yrds and expired 5 minutes after the 20 yrd shot square in the boiler room. I think a good sharp broadhead put right were its suppost to be on a relaxed animal from an average set up is all you need for most critters. Your set up should be more than fine with a well placed arrow... Keep em sharp, Chris

Thanks guys, I think I said it was a two inch cut/diam on those Mag#1's. I meant to say 1 1/2, still a monster of a head. After your comments I may go ahead and stick with them if I get them flying good. It seems like they are grouping low when I tried them out the other day but maybe it was just me.

FWIW, I used the 160g Magnus last year in Africa, and when things went well they did a great job, BUT I put one in the scapula of a Kudu and go almost NO penetration. :(
Had a couple of tips bend also.
This is why I have switched to Grizzly. For me, I don't understand why I ignored the Ashby report and didn't use them to begin with. I strongly recommend these for any big game. :thumbsup:
Also, I think the big wide, Magnus is harder to tune and keep from planeing. The Griz, with the 3:1 shoot like a dream.

I'd probably shoot a Snuffer "Super Dawg" at a moose from my 68# Morrison, or my 65# Sunbear bow.
Its a modified Snuffer. 160 grain Snuffer re-ground to a 125 Snuffer's cut diameter. Still got the 160's length for a better angle of attack.
Plenty of good heads out there for sure. Sharper the better.

I shot clear thru a Newfoundland bull using a 60# longbow, birch shafts, and a 190 Ribtek with a 29" draw.

Moose ARE dangerous game.
Funny story: A couple of friends of mine got into fishing big time on the border lakes of Minnesota, only accessable by water. They went and camped every few weeks. Well, there was a big 'ol bear that got used to them coming to the same place all the time and he got more brazen as time went on..to the tune of him coming into camp, chasin them out, and eating whatever he could find. They spent several nights in the boat (small boat), anchored off shore because of him. Well, they thought they'd fix him...they went out and bought a .44 S&W 4 pound magnum revolver...gonna put an end to this injustice once and for all.
Next fishing trip they got to camp and the first night a big bull moose came on in (had screw worm, makes 'em unafraid)...my friend pulled his gun, looked at it...then looked at this 9' moose.....and threw the gun in the lake and ran for the boat, moose rolled and wallowed on their tent destroying everything and they spent another cold night in the boat. :knothead:
