Title: Unimak Island Brown bear: I DREW!!!
Post by: Steve H. on July 18, 2005, 03:16:00 AM
At nearly impossible odds I drew one of Alaska's best brown bear tags for this fall on Unimak Island!!!!  The season opens Oct. 1 and I intend to be there with my little sticks in hand!

My buddy Charlie who backed me up on my first hunt on Chicagof may come up but if he can't make it I may have to track down one of my ole' buffalo lovin' mates from the deep south....any guesses who that might be?

I had a reasonably full fall planned before this tag appeared.  I've worked too much the past two years anyway and time for a break!

I have hunted Chichagof Island twice for brownies and had very close calls and carried a 66# osage selfbow with cedars tipped with damascus tradepoints made by our favorite Tradgang knife maker, Doug Campbell and yours truely.  I will probably use a laminated longbow on this trip (I build my own), I have a 66# one that is a likely or an old battle worn veteran of 64#, RRA cedars as always, and either a 190 grain Ribtek or DC tradepoint.

My buddy Charlie Rock from MO is coming up to keep me outta trouble.  I sent a deposit check to the main guy that flys hunters to Unimak out of Cold Bay.  There should be late season salmon runs at that time so I was pleased to find that out as I enjoy hunting on fish streams.

Good luck on the hunt.  I also put in for Unimak.  It was my first year to put in for the island.  May be 20 more years and I might draw.  Keep us posted.

Wow, I just realized only 1 month to go until Brown Bear time!  I already had a full schedule before I drew this tag and so far my partner are 3 for 3 tags.  We'll definitely let everyone know how this goes.  I noticed on my license that I have tag 002 so I musta been the second name pulled.  But first I must go hunt moose!

He musta got eaten by a bear!

I was considering doing a play-by-play sorta thing but been swamped lately.

Just the brief version for this samll group and may still do a expanded version with pics later.  The hunting was very lame and this from the area that should have been premier.  Saw 2 legals bears (non-sow/cubs) in 11 days plus a couple more in the pre-season and on fly days.

The fox hunting was good, the beach combing was great, and the artifact finding was outstanding including discovery of a human mass grave eroding out of the bank.

I don't know if I would call it lame???? Most of us will go our whole lives and never set eyes on a grizzly in the wild..... Must really be something to see.....  "[laffsmyl]"

Pretty lame when you compare it to seeing 60 bears in 10 days with numerous stalks like I have seen on my previous two hunts in non-draw areas.

Congrats Steve,

Still shooting my White Bison here in WV, but not as much as I used to.  Wishing you the best on this trip and want to hear the details when it's all said and done.  Shoot straight and keep 'em sharp.
