Hey All,
I just got back from my first hog hunt, with the Wensels in Texas, and I'm hooked! But I live in the Pacific Northwest corner of the country, so I'm looking for something a little closer to home, like maybe northern California.
Can anyone help me get started there? I undersand that there are ranches there, looking to rid themselves of excess porkers.

There are a couple of outfitters for hog in Nor Cal. I haven't used them but I've heard good things about them. One that I can remember is called Choppers aka Birds and Boars, and another I've heard about is Tejon Ranch.
Yes, most CA hogging is private land. If you want to try to hunt ranches that are not outfitters, or lease rights on a ranch for a season, you may have to do the homework through the county clerks or whatever to find the property owners and ask permission. One more idea, check with the CA DFG, www.dfg.ca.gov. (http://www.dfg.ca.gov.) They have an in depth report on hunting hogs in CA. I've heard that the hog hunting mecca for CA are private lands along the central coast around Monterey and Carmel.
I'm personally at the mercy of others for hog hunting access, so I can't offer any direct help. I'm alway staying alert for more opportunities though, so if I hear of some I'll let you know.

Toby is right. Hog hunting, like most things in the Golden State is pay for play. Tejon is great and they have some affordable DIY events. Their guided hunts are $750 or so. I wouldnt call it NoCal though, it is closer to Bakersfield. Lake Sonoma is supposed to be a public land hunt area. Never been there but the success rate on public land is super low. Arrow 5 outfitters also does hunts. Read about them in TBM.

TMS...According to the the state website about 50% of the wild pigs are harvested on private land. However, if you check out the state website you should get all the information you need. Good luck.

TMS Tejon has stopped all archery hunts this year I am told.Camp 5 is not worth your drive getting there.Chance of getting a good hog with stickbow is TOUGH on public ground!This is the south central cal.What you need to do is call some archery shops in the Redding, Red Bluff area, big hogs in that country! They can tell you who is getting pig's.Lake Sonoma has a lot of hogs but they know where the safe areas are.King City is the Hot spot, mostly guided hunts an leases.Jack Ranch in Shandon is also noted for big hogs.Bridges gun shop in Paso Robeles can steer you in the right direction for the central coast Hogs, a long drive for you! I'm going in two weeks to a place in N. CA by Clear Lake, called Craigs Guide Service. It's a shot in the dark and I can't recommend them since I haven't hunted with them yet.
I got the name from "California Hog Hunter" newsletter guides and outfitters listing. This publication is no longer in print but is available via the internet at:

There's still lots of good information on this site and lots of guides listed.
Another option is "Hunting Wild Boar in California" by Bob Robb. You should be able to find this book through a web search.

Not Norcal, but I can recommend this property personally. The folks are first class-no firearms mixed in the archery hunting area which is 650 acres of some of the toughest terrain imaginable. You will see animals every time.

I was up there in December. It was my first time there but my friends have been there lots. I enjoyed it. I'm going to try a blind down on the meadow next time! Didnt shoot one there but we went over to an area that they rifle hunt and there were a bunch of hogs feeding in an old barley field during the day...very unusual. I shot this sow.

I have gun hunted with Bert Claassen in the Paso Robles/San Miguel area for several years with great success. Going for the first time with a bow at the end of the month. See post below for the link to his site.

You will have a couple hours drive down south but I would reccomend big 5 outfitters they mainly guide for rifles but they also guide for bows.

I will second the recomendation on Hogs Wild. Larry and Jeremy are good guys to deal with, I have hunted there twice, and I will go again.

Kerry Griffith out of the Sacramento area.

He has ranches all over. Last time I talked to him I believe he was whitetail hunting in Ohio.
