i went for another hunt this weekend to the same swamps i have hunted previously. i missed 2 boars to start off with in the morning which i was disappointed with. i was carrying some stone point arrows and tried shooting the boars with them. my 1st stone point kill have to wait i guess...
i had been seeing a few buff along the way but the wind was very calm all day which means it swirls alot, so i didn't get a chance at them. at one stage i was walking along and spotted a buff but unfortunately he spotted me at the same time. not knowing what i was it got up from it's slumber and turned to check me out. i had my binos up by know and as he stepped out from behind a tree it was revealed to be one of the biggest bulls i have seen. "wow" i thought, "shame i won't get a chance at him". once these things sense movement the game is over. they will stare you down for longer than you can keep still. as soon as you move they are onto you and will never settle down. before long he vanished. i continued on and had a mob of cows and calves walk past me along a game trail. they pulled up as they cut my wind. they looked my way, saw me and took off.
walking on further i found another mob of cows and bigger calves. they were on the move and heading my way. they stopped at 20m when they saw me. all the calves were very big and would've been weaned by now. the biggest cow of the mob presented a shot. all felt good so i drew back and released. the arrow flew straight to the spot and disappeared. i was relieved it had done so as they didn't earlier on the boars. :(
within seconds huge amounts of blood poured from her nose, i knew she was done for. the mob then fled and she followed as far as she could, about 100m. then they left her and she went down. i was still standing where i made the shot, watching.
i'll be a tease..... :wavey:

the arrow passed though and was lying about 10m behind where she was standing at the time!

all in all, a great days hunting. :archer:
for those who are interested, i did some stone point testing on her afterwards. the results will be in the 'buffulo with stone point" topic, also in the dangerous game forum.
andy- be sure to share your buff arrow makings.

Congrats Again Clint!
and a pass through... that is impressive!
looks like its getting pretty hot and sweaty up there
my arrow set up as of now is similar in specs to yours just different ingredients
73Lb longbow (reflex deflex)
30 1/2" Beman MFX 300's
2x 100gr brass inserts
300gr broadhead
Total arrow weight 890grs
25.6 % FOC
not sure of the speed but im happy with it
i had tried one set up with 750grs which was to light and one set up with 1090 which was not giving me the returns i wanted settled for the happy medium in between.
Tell me did you use a Blackstump on her?
-
that sounds like a hard hitting arrow mate. i wouldn't hesitate at using them.
yes, i used a blackstump on her as well. i can't seem to help using anything else, they work so well for me. i've settled on them as my all time favourite head. a water buffulo is the biggest, toughest thing i think i'll ever shoot in my life so now i'll use them on anything else with supreme confidence. i bought some 160gr grizzlies but haven't used them! i can get the blackstumps scalpel sharp and IMHO that is more important than better mechanical advantage with a slightly duller head.
what head are you planning on using andy?
-
Ya those blackstumps are great heads, i have a few buddy that will not use anything else.
For my Buff Arrows
Im using Modified Grizzly La grand 190grs when finish weigh in at 175grs + 125gr steel adapter. Makes a 300gr head. And i can get them scary sharp in fact i can get the grizzly's sharper then any other broadhead.
-
yep, sounds good. each person has their own way of sharpening. i just seem to be able to get the blackstumps sharper than anything else i've tried.
get them tuned and go buff hunting with confidence mate!! when are you looking at doing the deed?
-
Well done Clint, omedeto! I'm guessing you didn't have any issues following the blood trail, LOL! How far did she go?
