I'm looking to attract hogs to an area I hunt.
I have corn feeders, any other methods? I've heard of some home-made concoctions.
I know they can destroy a food plot pretty quickly.
Any ideas?Thanks.

Corn works as good if not better than anything else. You need to make sure you put out enough corn to draw the pigs to your area and hold them there. Two handfulls of corn coming out once or twice a day from the feeder is not going to have the pigs beating a path to your area. If you are able to, go out a few days before you hunt and toss several bags around. That will get the pigs attention and have them coming back looking for more.

Plain corn works good
Plain corn sprinkled with strawberry sno cone syrup works better
Corn mixed with grease from the deep fryer from a mexican or fast foor restaurent works best.
Corn covered in maple syrup chases hogs away.

I sometimes take 20 pounds of corn and put it in a trash can. Fill with enough water to cover the corn and dump a couple of cheap beers in there. Let it sit covered in the sun for a couple of weeks then take it out to the woods.
Use post hole diggers to make several holes and dump the corn in and cover it back up with 2 or 3 inches of dirt. Almost a garuntee of having pigs on it in 24 hours if they are in the area.
Good luck!

corn with molasses(stump licker or something like it)will have pigs at your feet by the second day.
-
Cut the top of a tree or put a post in the ground.Put a tire over the top and fill with soured corn. They will keep circling the tree pushing the tire for weeks trying to get the corn out. Also you can put a creasault post in the ground .They will come to rub it on a daily bases.Keep the insects off of them.
-
Cool, thanks for the ideas.

I quit souring corn for hogs; got too smelly for me. Been mixing raspberry jello with water and pouring it over the corn. Helps them find it faster and works just as well.
-
x2 on the jello mix
-
I had heard Rasberry jello flavoring is a key ingredient to Hog Wild

5 gallon bucket of corn with a lttle diesel fuel poured on it really attracts them. Take the corn and bury it in layers in the ground with dirt on top of it so they have to work for it. Also they love a old log with burnt oil on it or the diesel fuel on it.
-
In Texas we only have to find the river bottom..They are there.
-
Make sure to put some of the water out of the soured corn in a spray bottle. It works great as a cover scent
The biggest reason to sour corn is so that nothing else will eat it but the hogs, who wants those pesky deer eating all of your corn when it's not deer season?
I've tried the diesel fuel trick and it does work.

keep coming.
-
The diesel fuel works especially if you are targeting only hogs. The deer will stay away.
-
About 2 weeks ago I put20 pounds of corn in a 5 gallon bucket with 6 old beers, 2 cut up apples, and topped it off with well water.
It smells really RIPE right now! I figure the pigs in our area will hit it within 24 hours when I decide to put it out.
Happy Hunting!

Dig a 5 gallon bucket sized hole, pour in the corn, throw a couple beers into the corn, cover the whole mess up with 4-5 inches of dirt, sit back and enjoy the fighting......

What we do in France for attract hogs is ,put some tar on trees( from the bottom to 3 foots hight)(you can find tar in the horses shop)usually on each place use 2 trees but not too close than the place where you feed(around 50 or 100 feets)because this take away doe for few times. For feeding hogs I use corn with some truffe extract on,this is work very well, put the corn directly on land, use 4 pounds of corn, but the most important maybe is the water, choise a place where you can find water,if in you place you dont have water, make a hole, put a stong plastic sheet on the bottom and add water, this keep hogs near this place.Remenber you, that the day where you whant hunting hogs, try to not walk to much on the place, hogs have a very poor view but have a very very good sence of smell.

I'm not sure that hogs have universally bad eyesight. I think it matters as to the environment. I think in the forest, where they don't have to see great distance, they focus only where they have to... like for truffles.
However, when hunted in the plain or on the ranches here, when they saw you coming from a distance, even great distance of several hundred yards, they were off at a dead run, and so that experience has led me to believe that their eyesight is somewhat driven by the environment they find themselves.
I think that they hear pretty good too, but their nose is every bit as you say...
Much Aloha..
-
Here, boars love to rub themselves on pine trees (the resin kills the parasites)
Tar works pretty well too.
Quietness is the golden rule to keep them on a spot.
-
X2 on the diesel, other animals won't fool with it. Doesen't take alot of diesel by the way.
-
A 3 liter bottle with corn, a little bit of flat soda maybe, or something sweet and fill it with water and cap it for a few weeks. When it's good and smelly, tie it to a tree, T-post, or just bury it up to the neck. without the cap. They'll come around and start batting it about trying to get the corn out. Cutting a few holes in it helps too.
-
After a good run on the catfish, I dump a 5 gal bucket of heads and guts out, keeps them comming like flies.

I've always heard they don't see very well until they see ya.

you guys that use diesel fuel must not eat the hog meat?
I wouldn't want anything I was eating to be ingesting diesel fuel...
-
Have to ride with Ray on this one. Like my pork sweet.
-
Diesel fuel, hummm. Just shoot 'em and light a match to 'em. Have your pork roast right in the field.

Sour the corn with water and the cheapest beer I can find in a five gallon bucket. Add in Kool Aid and any fruit that I can find. Seal up the bucket, and usually when the top begins to bulge out (2-3 weeks), it was ready. I just poured mine on the ground because I wasn't going to put that stuff anywhere near my feeder, but I did have the luxury of hunting them away from my spot. Good luck, and kill 'em all.

X2! Once they get a taste of the "spirits" they enjoy getting buzzed on it and cannot help themselves to return.

Has anybody tried putting out a Keg with a nipple on it!

That would work too.
-
I bet even I could sneek up on an intoxicated hog!
I may have to put a bucket in a hole and put a six pack in to see what happens! That could be interesting. I think I'll try it this weekend!
Benjy

Might catch a Mike Vines wollowing around in it if your real quiet.
-
Mike, I hope you're not going to be in SC this weekend!
-
Very interesting guys.
Thanks for sharing.

I was thinking the same thing. If you guys leave out a bunch of free beer, I'd probably show up too.

try grape koolaid with the sugar already in it just pout it in your corn or pour it around the corn. i have had good luck with sow in heat scent,,,,,only for big boars though. if you want meat hogs , sows just stick to the soured corn and koolaid with the sugar already mixed in.
-
sour corn with left over fish trimmings and used cooking oil poured in with all. Keeps the deer away and the oil keeps the hogs coming back even after all the other has been eaten up. I have tried the cool aid and seem to have a more immediate response with the fish trimmings and used cooking oil.
-
I thought I had heard about the diesel fuel before. Will it keep raccoons off, too? We have a problem in our hog traps of the raccoons eating the corn before the hogs show up.
-
Black Gold hog attractant, they cant keep away from it

This plus grape Kool Aid powder and any fruit that I can find that will help it ferment.

black gold works like magic

I use plan corn in my feeder and the day I shoot I put down some pig man gel stuff in the bottle to keep them there longer. It works because my cameras tell me that the 100lb pigs are there every morning and evening. At least 10 to 15 pigs. But when the feeder is dry good by pigs. So keep the feeder going.
Good luck. I use a home made Howard hill bow 68" @ 45# using gold tip 1535 .600 spine and swicky 125 grain 2 blade.

If you want to get really fancy, take a 3-4 foot section of 6-8inch metal pipe. Weld on a cap on one end with a section of chain, and use a threaded cap on the other. Drill with some 3/4inch holes sporatically - not swiss cheese, but say one every 6 inches randomly around the pipe. Fill it with your sour corn - earlier recipies work fine, grape koolaid is a favorite additive for me. Screw on the end cap and secure the chain to a tree or t-post.
PVC will work for a while if you want to test it out, but they will destroy it eventually.
We've used them in Texas - a lot of fun for night hunting in particular - you will definately know when they come in. Esp fun if you have a spot near camp that you stalk in to in the dark - you can hear it from quite a ways away.

Anyone try the purina quick draw hog block yet?
-
Hey Benjy, any luck with the block?
-
I never tried them, there are so many "gimmicks" out there that I didn't want to try them without some reviews on them...
-
I agree, esp when corn and jello seem to work pretty well.
-
When hunting javelin, I took a 5 gallon bucket filled only 1/2 with corn, then poured gallon of milk and a quart of cheap whiskey. Put the lid on and set in sun for a few days. Only put out a few handfuls where you are hunting and "They will come". I thought about adding some diesel, but didn't want to have meat with the diesel in it. The cheap whiskey worked so well - One day I had the bucket at camp out in the sun. I opened it to check on it - smelled pretty strong and left the lid off while I went in to eat lunch. Looked out the window and here the javelin came across an open park from 150 yards away with their noses up. They came right to the bucket - I sneaked out and shot one.

When I was a kid we fed the hogs ground oats and corn mixed with milk from the separator. It all sat in a 55 gal drum until feedin time. Now I would think this would still work well to call in hogs.
