Picked this up with some other bows today. Got it from an 83 year old man Who used to own a sporting goods store in the 60'S.

Ralph couldn't remember the manufacturer. It has some metal clips that appear to of had surgical tubing on them. He said it had rubber bands on it.
Any Ideas TradGang history Wizards? Thanks in advance.

Could be Penobscot Indian style bow.
-
This is a first for me..very interesting bow.
-
Tom, I thought of the Penobscot bows also but the extra limbs are on the belly of the bow not the back. And they will pivot to almost 90 degrees to the riser.
The man I got it from told Me of another Fellow from the area that always tried to buy it from Him I'm going to try and contact George and see what he remembers of the bow.

It is a RH Varabow. Actually a patented bow.
Heavy rubber was attached from the inner limb to the outer limb.
The string is attached to the inner limb and resistance in pulling is provided by the rubber. The back set of limbs do not bend, just the rubber.
I have one and have shot it. Not a great performer.
It is pretty much about as far off the edge as you can get and still be "classified" as traditional.
-
I know a self bowyer who built one of these style of bows(Penobscot) and shoots it, but Like you said it has the extra set of limbs on the back though not the belly. Very Interesting!!Henry

Wade could You give any more details?
Thanks
-
Mine has Varabow Pat Pending Ink Stamped in the sight window. The back set of limbs have notches to adjust the draw weight.
You can still shoot them safely. Take the bow to a scuba shop and buy some rubber for a spear gun to get it set up.
-
This photograph should help you understand how to set it up. You need some metal 1.25" OD. Heck some heavy bailing wire might work.
Always a conversation piece for those who have never seen one.

Brett, I have a flyer that will get a picture of when I return home from work on Monday.....Hink
-
Wade , thanks for the info. Would You be able to post a picture of it strung?
I figured the notches were for weight adjustment just having trouble visualizing how the string attaches. Thanks again

The sting is attached in the photo of the rubber. I is all set up ready to shoot. The inside limbs hing toward you when you pull the string back.
-
Hopefully you can visualize the entire bow now...

Thanks Wade, I knew someone from the "Gang" would know. What is the draw weight of Your bow?
-
The draw weight can be anything you want by adjusting the brackets or putting on different rubber. It is just set light now so the rubber is relaxed and does not weaken.
-
Here's the flyer on that bow..adjust 2# between slots .Hink.. :archer:

Hink - Cool brochure. The Varabow on the left appears to be made of a fancy wood. I have only seen the plain Jane laminated Varabow on the right.
-
Thanks for the picture of the brochure Hink. I'm not sure of the wood but the one I have is just like the one on the left.
Thanks again for all the information Wade and Hink.

bretto, your welcome...can you tell me what the black is on the last 6" or so on the main limbs, tape or paint ? on your bow...Hink.. :archer:
-
It is serving thread Hink. Don't see any reason for it to be there Myself. Not ever seeing anything like this before Wasn't sure if it belonged there or not.
From the pic. in Your brochure I see that it has been added on. The Gentleman I got it from is quite the " tinkerer " I also got 3 Bear target bows that are covered with tape residue from all the things he tried over the years. Like sights, clickers and wrist slings mostly all home made.
Do You know the correct string length for the Varabow?
-
bretto - Just run across the patent information about the Varabow...
Inventor of the Varabow was Jerome M. Van Hecke, from Magnolia, Arkansas. On January 6, 1969, he filed for a patent for his "Archery Bow with Variable Strength Adjusting Means" and on January 5, 1971 was granted a patent.
