Title: Ken Wilhelm and Babe Ruth
Post by: Liquid Amber on April 11, 2010, 09:47:00 AM
I've heard on several occasions in the past that Ken Wilhelm pitched to Babe Ruth, and rather well, it is reported.  But, I've never been able to find the source of this claim.  I may have simply over looked it and am hoping someone here could save me some time and point me to it.

Yes, Bob did provide a source.  When I retrieved my file on the Wilhelms from storage in my shop, I found that Fred Anderson had mentioned the same in his book, "The Traditional way" on his chapter on the Wilhelms.  From what Bob stated about the incident and what Fred noted, it seems likely that Fred obtained his information from the same source Bob provided.  Now I just need to get a copy of the Hugh Rich article.

Ken and Walt were my great-uncles. The source was Walt as quoted in Fred Andersons book. My sources were family who witnessed it and Ken himself. It was in the 20s when Ken Pitched for the Vernon Baseball club of the pacific Coast League who later became the Hollywood Stars. It was an exhibition. As Ken told me, he threw 10-15 fastballs down the middle and Ruth never once made contact. Vernon is in East LA not far from the old Ebbets field.
