Title: What kind of wood on Bear sixty niners?

I have too many bows just collecting dust, so I'm going to try and sell a few. Just want to get the description correct. Thanks, Tad

Not sure, but I think the K-mag is Shedua (sic).

I have one.

Just read on another website that most '69 Bears are either Shedua or Tigerwood. Maybe the Mag is Tigerwood and the Hunter is Shedua? Probably doesn't make a whole lot of difference, but I wouldn't want to give a buyer false information. Thanks

Owlgrowler is right they came in both. There are also many variations with overlays, ie. black tips and riser with either wood and white overlays either wood.

As you can see they both have black overlays sandwiched between white on the risers, but the Mag has white tips and the Hunter has black.

The 1969 Bear catalog states the riser wood is tigerwood for both the Kodiak magnum and Kodiak hunter.

As most should know as pointed out by the late Al Reader and Wade Phillips the catalogs are a good start but have many errs and omissions as things changed thru production.

I also have a 1969 Kodiak Hunter with black tips. I think the hunter is shedua. They are not always made from the wood as stated in the catalogue.

Most of the 69 KMags and Khunters that I've seen have been Shedua.  Those made from Goncalo Alves (Tigerwood) usually had the black overlays and tips.  Some of the 69 Tigerwood bows had nice figure, but not to the extent that the 68 Griz bows have.  Many of the 68 Griz had the really nice figure.  Lots of the Tigerwood 69 bows had figure that could have passed for a 2x4.

BTW Owlgrowler - your bows are both Shedua.

Really nice Goncalo Alves (tigerwood) has a very unique figure.  It is pretty hard to mistake for anything else.

Here is a photo of 68 Griz, 69 KH and 69 KMag tigerwood bows.  Disclaimer:  These ARE NOT my bows.....they belong to another collector in Italy.  These bows are nice examples of Goncalo Alves, with the 68 Griz being the shining star in this group.  The 69 KH in the photo is OK, but I have seen many 69 KHs with similar (and better) figure to the 68 Griz in the photo.  There are members here that have some absolutely knockout 69 KHs made with tigerwood.

Bear made other model bows in the same general time frame with Tigerwood, but these three models are the most commonly found.
