It's nice that spring is back to northern MI and we can enjoy some quality target time again. I've acquired a 1955, 1957, 1958 and 1959 Kodiak. I've shot them all and they all have their quality attributes. Well, I'm really getting to like this 1958 Kodiak. It doesn't have the sleek lines of the 1959. It doesn't have simple looks of the 1955 or 1957. For some reason it forces me into an 'awkward' feeling grip-I can't quite put my finger on it-every pun intended. This is a 52# factory camo model, but it also looks like someone sprayed some green solid camo over everything.

None the less it's a honey of a shooter. I'm not big on group shooting, however I'm amazed at the way this bow shoots 'itself'. The 1959 get's a lot of accolades and fetches a premium price and some may say this 1958 camo version is like 'putting lipstick on a pig' (wow, yes I did just make that joke). However if you want a surprising shooter-keep an eye out for the '58 Kodiak. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

It's funny because Copicasso and I were just discussing this the other day. I'm looking for another 1958 Kodiak, in 64" and 30-40lbs because I love my 1958's so much.
I have a 60" 1958 that's 37lbs and a 64" marked 44lbs, but draws more like 40. Todd Hill refinished my 64"'er and it's magazine cover worthy.
I just mentioned to Todd like yesterday that if the standard 1958 didn't have that white glass, it'd be the Kodiak everyone wanted, like the '59's, 60's and 62's.
I like 64" and have nice 1957, 1958 and 1960 in 64". With the 1958, it seems like you look right down the arrow and it consistently is the best shooter, for me.
Now, at least on my 64" 1958, the shelf sits high above my hand. From the top of my hand to the shelf rug is a full inch and the depth of the shelf is 3/4". Now, this particular bow may have those particular specs, but I really like it.
After my shoulder surgery recovery, I can finally shoot these bows again and I fully hope to be hunting with low 40's come next Fall.
Before I saw this thread, I'd kind of made up my mind that I was going to start the deer season with the 64" 1958, because it's shooting so well. (Although a 37lb 1957 I got from Bearbowman is in the running too) I'd done a lot of searching online, and in this forum, on 1958 Kodiak's and there just isn't a lot there. Nor is there the praise that's worthy of the 1958's.
As far as the white glass, just think of all the poplar, aspen, birch and beech saplings in the woods. A deer staring at you with the bow up just isn't going to see that white. And as far as glare, well green and brown glass produces just as much glare if the sun hits it right.
Todd Hill has a '58 for sale and he's got another 64" 1958 that he's going to scale and I may nab it if it comes in at the lower 40's. I'll give him a call right now! ;)

I have a 60 incher that draws 58. It is damn quiet and limitless pleasure to shoot. I "stole" it in a grossly underpriced consignment sale. If I could get away with it, I'd have a couple of weights in each of the three lengths. Yeah, I guess you could say I'm hooked.
-
My 1957 is a 64" too. It's a nice shooter. All the others I have are 60" bows. I think the '55 is the quietest and the '59 is snappier. The '58 seems to be the most accurate and has a great blend of speed, accuracy and quietness.

They are nice looking bows, especially with that white glass. Here's a couple of pics of mine that I refinished awhile back.

Yeager, that's a nice looking refinish.

have a 58 lh in 56" ..it is marked 50# at 26
it is a real shooter, very light and smooth pull even though it is 56" ...I was born in 1958 so it will stay with me....
-
Just bought a super condition one of these for a buddy of mine who collects alot of Bear's....really nice....48#..
-
My 58 came in about mint condition with a dozen of short, four fletch arrows. It is #45, 60" and I also got a 55#, 64" in well used condition which I traded off, kick my butt now.It also came with the original box and limb quiver. And like y'all said, it is a dream to shoot.
-
OK, for all you guys hoarding the RH 64" 1958's around 35lbs, you can contact me now about price or trades. LOL
-
Would someone PLEASE go rescue that '58 from the yahoo with his foot on the limb in one of his pictures? I'd do it but it's only two pounds different from my current one, which is a fabulous shooter. PLEASE!!!!
No, I have no stake in the transaction, only an ache in my heart at seeing this wonderful, slightly dirty but otherwise seemingly good bow. (Make sure you clarify the status of the tip that appears to be twisted. Might be an artefact of the photo, or not.)
EDIT – I just took a closer look on a larger display. There's apparently a longitudinal crack in one of the tips. Caveat emptor!

I just picked up this 1958 sleeper here on TG...it's a 1958 Grizzly. Believe it or not this appears to be all original...it's amazing, and for 43# it' hammers an arrow. The grip is as you describe your Kodiak, it's slim, but configured to fall into your hand consistently every time. With the tiny tips it is quick and deadly quiet.

Well one of my good buddies was over for a cocktail this evening and before we sat down on a fall like evening we shot bows. He loved the 1958 and couldn't believe how quiet it was. BTW the other two bows he was shooting of mine were a 56" Super Shrew Lil Favorite and a 2014 Bear Take-Down and he had brought his Super Shrew Samurai longbow with him. Quite a group to compare to.
