This will shock those who know my affection for Bear bows....but here's mine. 66" Ben Pearson. My 7 year old son loves this bow and has laid claim to it. He wants it when he's big enough.
I hope to add a little mojo to it from his father and keep his interest in archery going by taking my first trad deer with "his" bow!
What is your vintage set up?

That is a good looking bow. It is o.k. to skin a Pearson but I believe that there are severe penalties for skinning a Bear.
I will play it by feel this year. I haven't been working for several months so it is pretty important to kill something and drag it home. I will start the hunts with a 61 or 62 Kodiak Magnum. If things drag on too long I will carry a wheelie bow on a couple of hunts if I am seeing deer but the shots are too long for my skill with trad gear. Bow hunting gets pretty tough here once gun season starts the first weekend in November and by December the bucks are pretty much nocturnal. The second week of December if I am not finished, I will break out the rifle for the 250+ yard shots.
I am not truly vintage. I use old bows but my arrows are carbon with Magnus broadheads. All of my woody arrows are too short or I would use them. I don't think any of them are younger than forty or fifty years old so it is a shame that they so short.
-
Actually my all time favorite bow is a skinned 1962 Grizzly!
This Pearson is marked xx45# @28". I draw a bit over 29". Its a Pinto and I have been told it's likely a 1966 but I am not sure. It's a fine shooting bow
I will shoot carbons out of it or a cane arrow that was gifted to me.
-
My oh my...that is a nice vintage Pearson. I recall a pic of the great hunter Bob Swinehart carrying a Pearson Pinto like that in Africa.
My "vintage" bow is a Cascade Brush Hawk. It may not be an oldie, but they've not been made for a few years.
-
Pick one from my signature block. Please. :dunno:
Actually, I went out opening day with my dad's 1943 selfbow. Today I found a spot that calls out for the '66 K-Mag. When it snows hard, I'll show a certain 57 year old blonde a good time in the woods. And so it goes ...
-
That Pearson is very pretty; I'm going with one that is about a 1971 vintage - does that count?
-
Colin,that's purty!
-
That's a sweet bow and they shoot very well.
Good luck!
-
The color setup and rework is just outstanding! No wonder your son is laying future claim to it.... He's inherited good taste.
Hopefully pictures as you go along?!! :)
-
I too will hunt with a 57 year old blonde this year to start the season . A 1958 Kodak in a rare 56"which is 50# at 26 " as marked . Have not had time to hunt much . But starting this Saturday I will be out more regular . Looking to tag a moose ( either bull or cow ) and a whitetail ( buck or doe ) . Then I am switching to the first bow I hunted with after filling my first tag to a Bow River Whitetailer longbow 61# at 26 reflex deflex Yew lams with coco bolo riser . Not considered vintage as it is only a teenager at 18 years old .
-
I have a nice old Wilson Brothers Black Widow one piece on the way from Australia...it will see some action later in the season...I am one of 3 Wilson Brothers so there ought to be some mojo in that bow for me

Thank you for all the nice comments on the bow. It's really not in the greatest of conditions but wow does it show up well on film. I have concluded to give it a proper refinish after this season and have real skins put on (in lieu of the one stringer limb stations that are on it.
Yesterday was our opener. No dice on deer but a beautiful day to hunt

How about some other pics of these blondes you speak of? I know Dave will post. I enjoy seeing old bows hunt, and yes, for me 1971 is vintage!
I figure anything before 1985 but there's no rule on that

Going to use a mid 70's "B" mag Bear T/D with #3 limbs @ 43#.
-
Ron, I'm with you. My widow is all set up; but I just put my old A mag together and picked up a new Sue Shaw string. 60" 48# @28"; Going to play with some 30" shafts tomorrow and see what she likes best. I have some old 1918's and 1920's that I think can work.

Nice Pearson! Myself, I'll be using a 1999 Jack Howard Gamemaster Jet this year. My new sweetheart.

Well, after a good shooting session, it's a toss up between the 2114's and the 1920's. Bare shaft they were both flying like darts out to 25 yards. Fletched one of each up and will try the broadheads tomorrow. I only have 4 1920's and lots of 2114's. Will keep you posted.

I took my 55 pound 1960 Kodiak lefty along as a back up bow for elk hunting last week...well thanks to reading a post about heavy arrows I decided to move that bow to the number one position...we did not manage to find an elk the day we hunted together but it was still nice to share some time...I know it sounds kind of bizarre but with the string I have on that bow I shoot 250 spine Dangerous Game arrows with 75 grain inserts and 250 grain VPA broadheads...those arrows weigh a bit over 900 grains and I have Chronied them at over 150 fps

Well, I scrapped the A mag idea and took my '70B to NY. My #1 white tip 50#ers felt light, they read 46# on the scale. I put on a set of white tip #3 50#ers and all was good. Wed morning the B and I connected on a big old doe. When we got back to my buddy Tim's place, he put on Uncle Ted's tribute to Fred Bear. A fitting end to a fine hunt. Not bad for a 45 year old classic.

Very cool Shick!
Any pictures of the bow and doe?

'24, I can email someone to post pics. I'm not talented enough to post them here.

Sent you a PM. I would be happy to post

Very cool Dennis! Nice bow and there is quite a bit of kharma in your gear! Great stuff!

Check this out on pow wow! Getting it done with a 1963 Grizzly! This is sweet.
I have owned about 2 dozen Grizzlies. 1963 is likely the fastest of them all in my opinion.

Thanks for the bump on my first kill thread buddy. I hadn't really set out to hunt with a vintage bow for the sake of going old school. I got the bow that day and I loved the way it felt....and for the first time, everything came together perfectly. I shot MAYBE ten arrows through the Grizzly before I left for the woods. One shot, one kill on the doe. So I've shot it 11 times at the most. Which isn't to say that I don't practice....I shoot almost everyday...tens of thousands of shots invested in this deer.
I'm almost affraid to shoot it again now. I don't want to use up any of it's lucky shots lol. I absolutely love the bow though. Best feeling Bear I've ever handled. Now, I'd like to find a 63 Kodiak dogleg in the 50# range. I've heard tell they are sweet shooters too.
-
shick..NICE !!!!! Love the bow...and great deer...whitetail doe are fine eating !!!!took a moose last year with a 70B ,,probably my favorite bow I own !!!! congratz
the riser is heavy and seems to give me great accuracy..they are smooth to draw ...and the mojo is second to none !!
-
Brad, it always wasn't my favorite. After I had the grip/shelf modified 'ala Grant Young', the bow and I became one. I left it get away from me but got it back and it's here to stay.
Shick
-
nice Dennis...when I received mine ..it fit real nice....and th 1970 B is real pretty too !!!
I have a green stripe B as well but the grip is not natural...I tend to hold the bow with just the pointing finger and thumb and my palm is very light on the handle and it works...just have to remember that when I shoot it..it has a narrow throat and if I hold it like a pistol it torques....
I am adding some mammoth tusk "bears" that I had made, on the takedown bracket on the green stripe
a jeweler carved them identical to the bear logo for me... I got the mammoth tusk in South Dakota while turkey hunting a few years back...
-
Brad, your mammoth tusk 'bears' sounds like a nice addition to the green stripe. I found that the type II's and greenstripers are just a little too narrow for my liking. I had the throat of mine 'massaged' just a bit and it is 'dandy. I'm looking for a set of #1 white tip limbs that read 52# on the B. That's what the bow came originally when my buddy Jack ordered back when. I have a set of #1 white tips that read 49# on the B.

1969 Grizzly, and a Razorhead.
Took him on the ground with a hommade Surewood shaft.
-
I took out my 62 Kodiak for a quick hunt this AM. Even had one of Granddaddy's Razorheads in the quiver.
-
Chris, that's a dandy right there. The Grizzly's just keep on going. Congratulations.
Marc, take that '62 Kodiak on another trip to the woods. Good luck.
Shick
-
Shick,
I hunt the 62 some every year. It was my Granddad's and it will always be my most valuable bow no matter what else I have around here. It really holds it own against most of what's being made now.
A couple of years ago I missed a 10 yard shot on a buck because I was so excited I was going to make a kill with it I never picked a spot.
-
My 73 KMag again this year.
-
Wow! Nice deer Chris! Those 56" Grizzlys are sweet hunting bows!
-
Hunting with a Ben Pearson Cougar and have a Ben Pearson Pinto on it's way. Looking forward to getting it delivered later this week.
H.P.
-
congratz Chris...nice deer and another nice BEAR bow !!!
-
The vintage bows got me thinking about a Quote my friend once said that sticks in my mind about the speed of an arrow. We were talking about FPS and we agreed that the most important attributes of a bow is not the speed ( as long as it is good enough to effectively kill efficiently..with kenetic force of poundage and arrow weight) its the accuracy and how quiet they are for the archer...
his Quote " the deer doesn't know how many FPS the arrow is going when it hits his vitals "
point is these vintage bows have been doing the job for over 50 years and continue to do so..just as effective as any modern bow...
I hunt vintage a lot and have custom bows too but regardless what I an hunting I don't give it a second thought about the job a vintage bow does...and how about the MOJO !!!!!
-
trubl, I agree. I have some customs, but never once doubted the effectiveness of vintage bows.
Surely the deer have not become bionic in the last 50 years.

Been shooting a mid '70s Bear Takedown, an A magnesium with No 2 53# limbs. Killed a small 7 point with it in mid October. I've been shooting my '66 Kmag the last few days, may take it to the woods this weekend.
-
Alternating between a '65 Grizzly and a Browning Cobra II. Managed a 4 yard shot on a doe with the Cobra only to have song dogs find her before I did, guess I'll do some late season calling for those critters.
-
Congratulations Dennis. I keep wanting to use a newer Bear takedown this season but I've been shooting my green stripe with old red tip limbs so well I'm not willing to switch.
-
Phil, keep on shooting that green striper. I've been thinking of retiring the '70 and picking up a green striper, but just unwilling to make it happen yet. Good luck.
Shick
-
The odd thing for me right now is that I am sticking with my lefty 1960 Kodiak because of the arrows I want to hunt with...55 year old bow with carbon/aluminum arrows and modern fibre low stretch string

Still hanging tough with the "64" Zebrawood Grizzly and Bear Razorheads w/ no insert.

Congratulations Norman!!!!!

Way to go Norm !! got mine with a Kodiak behind the house on the 25th of October.

Congrats on a nice buck Norm! When did you get him?

Way to go, Norm! Need to hear the story behind it this winter. Great photo, too. A beautiful buck with a beautiful bow. Congratulations!

Just saw this Dennis.
Congratulations!!!

Phil, I thank you. I was carrying a few momentos of deceased 'brothers of the bow' with me on that hunt. It meant a lot to me and was very gratifying.

I totally and completely understand that Dennis.
The picture of you with your vintage bow and whitetail brought a huge smile to my face.
Bravo!!!
-
It is a very pretty bow,the snake skin beside the light and dark wood make it a stand out. I only hunt turkey with a 1967 Kodiak Magnum.
-
Congrats to all of you who made it happen with vintage gear this year! I also thank all who shared their pictures and stories.
I didn't make it happen. It was a rough year for me at work. I didn't get out much and the landowner where I hunt is allowing access to a guy that hunts very differently than I do so things weren't like they used to be when I did go out.
Oh well, all just excuses. Today was our season end. I did get out with the Pearson. It was the first time I had been out since November. It was UNSEASONABLY warm but a beautiful day. I saw 3 deer, nothing in range and watched a group of pileated woodpeckers for a couple of hours. Great day really.
Thanks again guys!
-
Colin, you gave it your best when you did get out. We all know it doesn't always happen. Perhaps you will get a little more time this year. Enjoy your adventures with vintage equipment. Good luck.

Thanks Shick, first trad bow that I picked up at a garage sale about 5 years ago. I'm 56 and enjoy everything I experienced trad. Wish I was introduced when I was a kid. No worries though :)

Great bow and nice doe!

Manistee National Forest Doe taken with my 66 Kodiak. Sorry about the crappy cell phone picture but that is all I had with me to take the photo.
