I remember the first time I met Fred. He was the guest speaker at an Alaska Bowhunters Assoc. banquet. I was seated at the head table and we had a long talk about how things have changed over the years with bowhunting. Fred didn't like cell phones or the internet and he told me to not believe everything I read on line. He showed me a pic Nels Grumley had sent him, Nels was bowhunting mule deer in New Jersey and wasn't having much luck ( I think Nels was having issues with his GPS because his mule deer tag was for New Mexico, not New Jersey but, Nels was never one for details)... Fred said Nels spent too much time looking at his phone and worried about selfies to concentrate on the deer hunt. Fred chuckled at Nel's comments on his new fast flight string and carbon arrows... they just didn't group as well as the woodies apparently. It came time for me to introduce our guest speaker, Fred finished off his can of Red Bull and walked over to the teleprompter. He gave an inspiring 2 hour Power Point presentation with many stories and photos. A very gracious man, down to earth and full of wit and wisdom... It was a night I'll never forget. His closing comment was "the more things change, the more they stay the same"... I couldn't agree more....

Haha funny story. That is cool you met Fred Bear before. I am kind of guilty of the technology thing now. Untill my work gave me an iPhone I was never in a cell phone. But times change and so do people. I use mine all the time to learn about archery history and bowhunters. Not much else. When I go in the woods I leave my phone on because I have a wife and 2 little babies so it's for emergency only. But guys do spend to much time on them while hunting. But technology isn't always all bad. I just learn to adjust with times. I'm sure things were done differently in 1988 compared to 1933. We can say this about every generation.

April Fool indeed....the only truth to that story is that I attended several ABA banquets over the years, however that was long after Fred and Nels were at that big Grouse Haven hunting grounds in the sky...
Fred passed before the internet, cell phones, Red Bull and Power Point...
Nels never owned a GPS, hunted mule deer in NJ , took a "selfie" or shot carbon arrows with a fast flight string.... oh, and Nels attention to detail was second to none. A true craftsman.
Technology is great, I've embraced it as much as anyone however the simple, uncomplicated life is the one for me... a hot cup of coffee and a smile is all I need to start off a good day.
