Title: combat wounded yesterday/ update 8/24 pg6
Post by: Robert Honaker on September 14, 2011, 10:52:00 AM
Several of you donated hunting vids to my son and other Marines in afghan  a few weeks ago and it is so greatly appreciated.

Now I want to ask you for your prayers also....On 9-13-11  @ 10:30 AM Afghan time he was leading his second patrol of the mornig when he stepped on an IED. He has lost both legs from the knee down and sufered bilateral femur fractures, along with losing part of his left pinky.
His friend and Sgt  called this morning and said he was awake during the event and in good spirits as he was medivac'd.
I havent talked to him yet.  He will be in germany sometime today  and then on his way to Maryland within a week hopefully.
He is so very lucky to have survived, but has a long road ahead of him.
Your  prayers are greatly needed not only for him , but the family also, especially his mother.

He will be on the ground  at Walter Reed Med Ctr  in an hour or so.  He is on a vent, but no brian injuries. Should be off the vent soon. If he heals well good things are gonna  happen...just gotta heal well.

As of 9-28 it has been 15 days since injury. Looking at several months of care and rehab in the hosp. Toady he had his seventh surgery. Fri he will hopefully have his femurs nailed and all wounds closed, but it all depends on his infection. They wont touch it till fever is gone.  he is in good spirits and has not complained at all. He is chompping at the bit to get to pt and rehab.

Thanks for all your well wishes and prayers.

10-9-11..had last surgery Monday. Femurs fixed, all tubes out of him, wounds closed and lung is healed. Spirit is great and he is so thankful to have survived. Eating like a horse and working out everyday even though the pain is bad most of the time, although it is dramatically better.
His faith and everyone's prayers have done so much.

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers....

I share every feeling your friends have spoken. You are right, he is lucky to be alive.  But, he will need courage and the love of friends to make the most of his recovery-as will you, your wife, and your family. There's no doubt he has that support, and strong faith will bring all of you through this terrible ordeal. Our prayers are with you.  Tom

he's fighting infection and has an injury  to his lung that is requiring a chest tube...surgery everyother day.

everyones thoughts and prayers are truly appreciated...

I told him how much people appreciate what he does and he said..."really, they really understand why we do it?"

I hear from him pretty regularly but when there are stretshes that I don't, I let my imagination drift to the horror you have described. I pray for your son's recovery and healing and peace for your family. God Bless you all for your sacrifice.

Robert,

Reading your son's surprise at our understanding breaks my heart...and draws me back many years when all were returning from Viet Nam to true hatred and rejection.  To live on the edge like that and not KNOW in your heart that others appreciate and understand the sacrifice is gut wrenching to read.

Continue to reassure him that many know and things ARE different now then back then...regardless of what the myopic-minded media says!

Continued prayers for his healing, increasing strength and the undying knowlege of our deepest appreciation!

Mr Robert, Just a note to tell you I'm still praying for your family as is my church. Could you please tell your son I'm am honored to pray for him and all those like him who do what they do so we can do what we do. They protect not just our country but also the way of life we take for granted sometimes. They protect our right to have a web site that we can come to and share the needs of others and to cry out to our Heavenly Father for all our needs. Freedom is not now nor will it ever be free. It comes at a very costly price that people like your son and all the others who have fought in all the places around the world know only too well. Some gave all but all of them gave something of themselves to protect who we are. Thanks to all of you who read this and have served this country in what ever way you did to insure our way of life.

Father having given your only Son for us you know the pain of such an action. Father please bless all those who have served in the past, present and future this day. Father please keep us mindful of the cost of our freedoms both physical and spritual. God bless us as we struggle to honor you and the ones who do this for us. It is in your Holy name I ask these things this day. Amen.......God bless you and yours.......Dusty

He is going to be up on his first set of legs Wed. if all goes well. He,s been waiting  for this to come.

He is working out and rehabbing two hours a day and getting back to his preinjury strength. Looking at a year to 18 months till he gets outta here, but they told him if he wants to run and hunt when he leaves it takes that long.

Tears of joy reading that your Son is making such good progress and is indeed, continuing to show that fighting spirit.

The Lord can work miracles, but he requires a willing soul in which to work.  It sounds like your son has a firm grasp on our Father's Son and faith in both!

May he be one of those who can amaze us in the coming months and years as he learns to use his new legs and never tires of striving toward that ultimate goal to rejoin us all in the woods.

Lord in your mercy!

Please know that my family will include yours in prayer. There is no meaningful way to thank your son for the price he has paid for us but THANK YOU and may God make the path as smooth as possible.

Robert, I read your original post for the first time about a week ago and every evening I try to let you know I have your son and family in my Prayers but I got so tore-up I couldn't finish.

These last 10 years there have been so many of our finest men and women lost or grievously injured that it's hard to take anymore.

I can't imagine the emotions of the families going thru it all. I'm so glad that he will eventually be able to return to the things he loves doing.

He is Blessed with a loving family in support of his recovery, and as God spared him I know He will be with him also.

Your family will always be in my Prayers.

On a lighter note he is walking a little everyday now. Been on them maybe 6 hrs total and now uses a cain. Things are lookin up.

As I continue to follow this thread I find myself thinking of all those who are not physically wounded but carry the wounds of war in their mind. You cannot experience combat without coming away wounded from the shear horror of seeing what it does to fellow human beings. Wounds that never heal no matter how much you think you have it together. I pray for these as well and the families who stand with them thru this daily. I know that sometimes it only takes a smell or a word to cast you back into a time that you would like to never go back to. This is another reality that we have to ask God to carry them/us thru. I am proud to know your son and those who have given us so much. I’m proud to know you and your family and even more proud to be asked to lift ya’ll up to our Heavenly Father…….Dusty

Thanks to everyone who offered prayers and thoughts.

He is doing really well. Spending more time on his new legs everyday. From here on its a matter of muscle building and practice.  He is able to climb flights of stairs and drives my truck no problem. He uses a cane and scoots along pretty good and is fairly agile in them.

Rehab could last another year and I d say by that time it will be hard for a stranger to know when he's wearing jeans.

He makes jokes about it and seems to be adjusting mentally really well. We get to go home two weeks for xmas. He said he would not go home till he could walk and here we are 3 months post blast healed and walking.

Continued prayers for your son's recovery and future. Please tell him I appreciate his service and the terrible sacrifice he was forced to make by a cowardly enemy. I also appreciate the sacrifices you are making as a result of this tragedy but, I know as a father, you don't feel it is a sacrifice to care for your son. Our country owes your son and the rest of your family a debt that can never be fully repaid. God Bless you all.

Mr Honaker, you tell that son of yours he's an inspiration to us all...and how grateful we are for his Sacrifice!

I saw a poster bantered about the net recently of a soldier with ONE artifical leg back in the desert fighting again...amazing!

With folks like your son, and if we get back to faith in His Son, we can turn this country back around!

Prayers for continued strength, healing, agility and mental strength to do all things by the Will of God!

Well I wanted to move this back to the top as a friend of mine just lost a son in that terrible place over there so that we can live and work and play and go about our everyday life. I was reminded once again of the great price that is being paid for us to have this site as well as all the other things we take for granted here in the country. Lord we need but to look around to see these people are everywhere. Not just the warriors but the support teams, families we call them, that walk around us every day. I hope that when you read this post today that you will stop long enough to tell that one whom you know that has been there and done that "Thank You" for your service. Even those who never wore a uniform but lost someone who did, have raised someone that did, or married someone that did, or buried someone that did, that you will not forget their sacrifice for what we call FREEDOM. I will and I promise to never forget them as long as I have breath. Again thank your son for his service and thank you for raising a son who was willing to do so.......Dusty

I haven't checked this thread ina long time, but this evening I read it from start to finish. Brought a flood of memories. I had kinda forgotten what it felt like being there,  watching him thru his stages of recovery and struggles. How it felt to see him that way.

Hard to believe that it will be a year Sept 13.

I want to thank everyone again for your kind words and support. It matters very much.

He will be discharged from Walter Reed the end of Sept., the beginning of bow season here and he is ready to get in the woods.

He says this deer season should get him in even better shape. Plans on using trekking poles with his bow/rifle slung on his back while making his way to sits. I don't think its gonnbe a real problem after seeing how far he has come.

I know this is an old thread, but there were so many of you that kept up with us during the majority that I thought you would like to know where he was. Thanks again to all of you!
