Don Bateman, Bernie's dear friend, just PM'd me that Bernie is back in the hospital...fluid is apparently building up all over... so the doc wants him RIGHT THERE where he can keep an eye on him.
Bernie says he feels better than he has in a while...but he's back in the hospital.
Please...keep our li'l ole Mini-Grunt in your prayers...hard and often!
Thanks

Still at home this AM (for a change - LOL) and feeling pretty darned good (even look and sound better - and that's going some). I will start my own home applications of this Intravenous Antibiotic again today. We will get busy and kick this "Rascal" out of Dodge. They were concerned with swelling and water retention slowing my heart down. So they took 3 electrocardiograms, and an ultrasound - and declared my heart healthy (thank you, Lord). Sent me home for the rest of the IV treatment along with a daily diuretic to keep the "water flowing" - LOL (Uh- don't get between me and the bathroom ;^) ♥
-
Glad to see you back home Bernie. Prayers still going up for you my friend.
-
Bernie, glad you are home and keep fighting "old friend".....our prayers are with you ....

Late today, the base Dr's pulled the "PIP" out of my arm and chest - just like a drawstring on an old hoodie - only easier - LOL. I'm off the Antibiotics (for now, at least) and to stay on the diuretics 'til all the bad (and good) antibodies git outta Dodge. Bonus - I can drive again - CLEAR THE ROADS! LOL
-
Prayers continue for progress toward full energy, health and fitness to return to our own Mini-Grunt!

UPDATE : Bernie went back to the ER and for the last three days they have been doing a lot of testing on the poor fellow . Yesterday , they found that his kidney infection looked just as bad as it did when they first found it and on top of that he has another infection in his esophagus down, into his stomach . So they have kept Bern for a few more days to get a good handle on all this . This mornig Bernie seemed to be feeling and sounding some better . Please keep him and Rose in your prayers

Prayers for God's best.

I just got an email from Bernie his own self. Seems his whole immune system is taking a bit of a hit, but not his spirit!
He's square shouldered and eyes straight front on this one! Appreciates all the prayers for sure and feels with patience, he'll be back raising cane again! :)

Had an appointment with the civilian urologist today:
Couldn't have went more like I wanted it to if I had choreographed it myself - the Dr.s appointment with the urologist that is. CLEAR BILL OF HEALTH, keep taking meds until gone - wait a couple weeks, then go have the base run a test for him. After that one more office call with him about 30 days from now - to make sure everything is still clear. He sees no problem at this point.
Thanks to everyone again.

AMEN  :clapper:

A quick update:
Just got released from the hospital again today, after a three day stay. Seems relapses are common with these UTIs and especially in older people. I'm Back with a PIP in the arm and on HEAVY antibiotic IVs (at home) for 14 days, after that oral antibiotics of a strong nature for four weeks, and then it looks like a rather weak antibiotic for an indefinite period of time. - Whatever it takes but no shooting or driving for awhile again.
-
Thanks for the update Bernie. You will beat this thing! Keep listening to the Drs. and we'll keep you in our prayers. God Bless.
-
I will be praying for you Bernie, take care.
-
Thinking of you and praying for you Bernie!
Heal up well and relax.
-
Bless your hearts, everyone, your concernes DO mean so much.
-
Well, Drat, Bernie...
Sorry to hear you were back in---
Glad to read that is somewhat "expected" with a UTI of your caliber and they're prepared for it
Good to see you're responding well enough
Sorry to see you back on such heavy doses of the "nasties"
Keep the prunes (and probiotics)handy and the Son in your eyes!
-
Prayers sent and continue for your healing and strengthening
-
Well lets see, the first dose was in the Hospital, second was yesterday when the Home Nurse Administrator came and talked me through one (since I'd already done it before), and today is day three/14 - and I'm on my own again. Hmmmm - I wonder why they don't pay me as much as they do them, or at least half. Heck I'm not greedy - :D
-
Bernie,
Now there's a question for the ages! :)
I hate this for you, buddy, but so grateful to Him that you're able to fight it this way and keep outa the hoosgal.
Now...if you'd just quit drinking outa mud puddles, Bernie... we might avoid this in the future, ok? :knothead: :jumper:
Prayers that this round will kill it deader'n a salt mackeral.
Lord in your mercy...
Keep the Son in your eyes, B!

Man how many bows could you buy. :biglaugh:
-
Lifting you up in prayer brother Bernie...
-
Thanks, all. I just never could stay away from those "pud muddles" - LOL
Oh, ya know what the docs tell me about reoccurring UTIs the other day before checking out??? They can produce symptoms like dementia - it isn't dementia but acts like it sometimes - Boy am i in deep doo-doo! Got CRS, big time, already - LOL
-
Bernie, it's good to see that you still have your great sense of humor. Someone said laughter is the best medicine. Keep it up!
-
Glad they shared that with you, B!
I worked for a Non-profit that did Guardianship ... one of the Guardian (nurse) told me as my folks aged, if they suddenly acted goofier (than normal) to have a UTI culture test done...NOT a urinalysis...a culture test...and that 90% of those initially diagnosed with dementia onset are really suffering from UTI's.
I shared this with many my age with older parents who used it wisely... and saved their parent(s) untold grief when it was a treatable infection.
So there ya go, Bernie...forewarned is foretold so you now have an excuse for any given day's totally bizarre behavior.
I will pray for Rose! :biglaugh:
-
LOL- I heard THAT! It really is a good thing for them to warn us about though, could save some pretty big scares - for many folks.
-
We better be careful, Bernie...some of the jaspers might start to think I know sumpin and you really DO drink outa mud puddles...
Not since ya were an active duty Marine, huh, Mini-Grunt? :)
-
Checking in to see how our friend is doing????
Hope you're well Bernie.
Bud
-
Bud,
Bernie shared this with me:
Today, marks the end of my second bout of IV antibiotics through the PIc - then they'll "jerk" it out of my arm (again). Like pulling the drawstring out of your sweat pants - LOL. Tomorrow I go on oral antibiotics - 2 per day for 6 weeks.
So far so good, this time.
Oh, and I should be able to get back to shooting my bow again (probably 35#er again).
-
Prayers to you Bernie.
Thanks Doc!
Bud
-
Thanks for the update. Prayers for continued good results and healing.
-
I believe he's to be on Low-dose antibiotics for the rest of his days as a prophylactic?
Better that than what he's been thru several times... now if he'd just quit letting the dogs lick out of his Marine Coffee mug! :)
-
Update:
So far so good, folks. The Dr. also changed my BP meds a little (to get me off one of my two old ones that is also a beta blocker type, I've been on for years, and to bring my heart beat/pulse up a little more as it's always been low). I do seem to be having some small amount of dizziness going on that most likely is from the change to the oral antibiotics, or the new BP pills. A little ea
rly to tell. but I take my vitals every day and the Dr. checks with me (by phone) weekly, and the visiting nurses are still coming by once a week too. I can't complain (from what it was) so far - I just wish I'd get back to a real norm. Then I guess most all "older folk" have those feelings - LOL.
I am thinking today that I will call the Dr. tomorrow about the dizziness. I think the new BP medicine is taking my upper BP number TOO low and causing the dizziness. We'll see.
Got the next door neighbor's son (not a kid) mowing the lawn and trimming edges for us now. Tim can pick up a little extra pocket money, and I'm giving him a lot of stuff I don't use anymore that he enjoys. He also is going to go up on the roof and blow out the gutters, that I was going to do just before I got sick. I wouldn't dare get on the roof just yet. So that all takes a lot of worry off our minds. Says he'll do anything we need done. I gave him a couple hand-held Mp3 players (loaded with music he likes), some misc. camping gear, a slug of fishing gear, etc. - plus he can buy assesories he needs for his boat that he lives on - he's in hog heaven, and our yard looks more like normal these days. Good deal for all.
I'm rambling - LOL - just wanted everyone to know I'm still kicking.
-
I know everyone appreciates your updates, Bernie.
Get them meds straightened out... some don't play well with others and docs don't always review what other docs give you to see all is copacetic.
Better to call early then throw your system in a tizzy!
Keep us posted, Mini-Grunt.
Keep the Son in your eyes, bro.
-
Glad to see you posting up on your update Bernie. I think of you each day and wish the best for you.
-
Thanks to all who check in, the encouragement, and prayers. I talked to the Dr. yesterday and we are dropping the new BP med and going back to half the old one (for now) starting today. We'll see if we can hit a happy medium - LOL (I sure hope so - we all know I'm dizzy enough without meds making me more so).
-

Bernie, Bernie, Bernie...you do know a "happy medium" is one of them fortune tellers on pot, don't you???
and why would you ever want to HIT one of those poor mis-guided souls anyway...tsk, tsk :saywhat:
-
As a kid I started out with white hair (no fooling), by the time I got into 7th grde it was almost black, then when I joined the MC at 17 it was back to brown. Snuck right by blond without stopping somehow. (Now it's kinda salt and pepper, if I let it grow out - LOL)
-
Well, then, the "dizz" aint cause yer a "dizzy blonde".
any better since the med change??? Might take a few huh??? :)
thanks for enjoying the joke!
-
Yep, but already started feeling significantly less dizziness on the second day after switching, thanks for asking, buddy.
-
Pretty soon, our li'l ole Garden Gnome will be in his ladder stand...with his special repelling harness on...and grinning like a Cheshire cat!
I'm sure you're just glad for feeling better and getting strength back. Fades fast as we add a few years... do some real gentle PT and especially with those back muscles... with those rubber band things, and ease back into ole Blackie.
Wishing great things and praying for His protection for ya B.
-
May be a while yet but thank you so much, my friend.
-
Bummer - Doing better all the time but Deer season (archery) started here on the 8th and I still just don't feel up to it, nor have the needed strength. Still hoping I will before it ends on Jan 1 though - LOL. Wanted to wish everyone else the best possible season though, and let you know I'm still hanging in there.
-
You come here and keep us posted on your progress... doing anything to exercise those muscles will help...even a standing wall push back...
Keep the shiny side up, bubba!
-
A couple folks asked how I was faring now. (NOT IN HOSPITAL)
Doing good, I guess but the antibiotics (I lay it to them) still raise sand with my nausea and dizzines (worse some days then others) and my limbs are still weak as a wet dish rag. Sure beats the alternative though - LOL. Thanks for asking. Nine more days of the heavy dose antibiotics, then I go onto a low/preventive dose. I think/hope it will get much better then.
I hate to talk about it too much, though it keeps me "not quite me", as i know there are so many of our friends in much worse shape. One reason for not posting much, (the nausea and dizziness is the other - LOL).
-
Good to hear from you, Mini-Grunt!
Wish the news were more sterling, but it is a danged site better than back around St. Jude time, eh? :)
I think you're onto something...fall since I had to quit allergy shots I took since 6 yrs old (insurance issue ended them) and now each fall I feel like crap... they stuck me on them antibiotics 3 falls in a row...and I was dizzy and sick in the guts all the time...
This year, just gutting it out. Praying that you're situation is similar and when off those High Test bug killers you will rebound more quickly!!!
I'm thinking there were no bugs, just the miserable allergies that caused mine, so the antibiotics had little to work on but making me feel worse... if so, maybe that is your case, Bubba... them bugs be dead... so the low dose will hold any residual troops in check and you'll be swinging from the trees and chasin Rose around the house in a couple weeks!
Keep the Son in your eyes, buddy!
-
I'm sure hoping that's the case, Doc. Heaved my guts up yesterday AM, shortly after posting the update - sheesh! You know, just to start the day off right - (Oh, how I hate that!) :D
-
Don't think you're pregnant do you??? :knothead:
they mighta taken advantage of you there in the horsepistol when you were 'outa it' for a while...
-
I was wondering about that too - :dunno: ;)
-
Don't wander too far, li'l buddy...lest you tie a string on your belt!
