From Brothers of the Bow facebook page.
This is Jenny, Gene's daughter and wanted to update everyone on some happenings of the last couple days -
My sister just posted on her wall asking for prayers for our family. Below is what is going on. Thanks to everyone that has texted/emailed and called and we will keep you update. *********
Our dad went Shed Antler Hunting on Wednesday and walked for HOURS and MILES. That night he got home and had a very high heart rate and low blood pressure. Yesterday morning he went to ER and was admitted. They got his rate normal and were just monitoring him. He was joking with the nurses and totally fine. This is the guy who has never been in a hospital for anything since he was born. He was going to go home this morning. So this morning I get a text from him that says ---
Figured out where I XXXXXX up. I drank 4 bottles of water while dehydrated but added Mio Green Thunder, which I thought was just flavoring but in reality is an energy drink. So essentially I downed 4 Red Bulls on an empty stomach that jump started my heart. Something to remember! Pass the word! Then he called 2 hours later this morning and they are transferring him to Iowa City for a better hospital and cardiologist. They think that he might have had a mild heart attach and so are going to run some tests at the new hospital and see if he needs a stint. He is not worried at all. So thank you everyone for keeping him and our family in your prayers
-

Get back in there after those sheds Mr. Wensel, before the porcupines do. I hear they have a high tolerance for Red Bull around those parts and can chew a shed in minutes once wired up on the stuff.
-
Hoping for a speedy recovery, Mr. Wensel! Seriously, those energy drinks can really mess someone up. I remember when I was studying for finals week and I downed 3 cans of Full Throttle. Felt all right and not jittery. And then later the same night I took some pre-workout (another injection of caffeine) and started getting pronounced heart palpitations while lifting. Guess it was that last drink that tipped me right over the edge.
-
Best to the family and to Gene, Get well sir and back in the woods sans the energy drink. Maybe Take some trail mix.
God bless, Steve

As a traditional Asian archer, I don't share too much with all of you, but even I know the contributions that Gene has made to traditional archery. I pray he recovers fully and continues to help advance trad archery for as long as he wants.

I visited Gene in the hospital yesterday. He was in good spirits and had a copy of Trad Bowhunter for reading material. Gene says he feels fine. They want to check him out more thoroughly today just to make sure there is nothing more serious that needs to be fixed. If all goes well he will probably be released tonight or tomorrow. While visiting, the nurse came in to deliver him his lunch. With a somber voice, he asked whether he would be able to play the piano after being released from the hospital. The nurse asked Gene if he currently plays the piano. Gene replied, "no!"

:clapper:

Glad all is well! No more energy drinks Gene.

Speedy recovery.

I talked to him about an hour ago and wanted to update everyone. As listed above he is in good spirits and in no pain. They did confirm he did have a mild heart attack but no "damage" was done and that's a huge plus. Negatively, they found one area that's 99% blocked so stents won't do the trick. They are scheduling him for by-pass surgery ASAP. They know how to fix it but haven't scheduled the surgery time yet. Street talk is the best surgeon moonlights as a bartender so they need to work around his schedule too. Seriously, thank you all for your prayers. They are very well received. His entire family really appreciates it. bw
-
When he heals up from the by-pass, he'll feel like a sprie young hunter!! Best wishes!!

I hope that Gene gets well quickly. I have had a few set backs such as a heart attack and a mini stroke but have had a-Fib under control and I am sure that the hospital and Cardiologists will get his heart under control and he will continue a long and happy life!
I will keep him in my prayers.

I'm sorry he has to go through the surgery, but very glad to hear that no damage was done. I have several people in my family that have had it done, and know others too. All of them are going strong. More prayers on the way. I wish you all the best.
Bob
-
Thank you Barry for keeping us posted. Our prayers are with you all. Better find a low poundage bow for him so he does not have to be off shooting for too long.
-
Thanks for the update BW! I'm sure that bartender will use a cork screw to get that blockage cleared! :scared:
-
I also heard the bartender/doctor has a twin brother too who works as a butcher/meat cutter. Apparently they like to switch jobs occasionally just for laughs. bw
-
had triple in november back to work and shooting, get him a nice electric chair, it really helps. will keep him in my prayers
-
ahh Barry, you kill me lol
praying and hoping for the best!
-
Thanks for the update, pray all goes well.
If I had my druthers, I'd take my chances with the butcher, bartenders get distracted to easily
-
I visited with Gene and Donna at the hospital yesterday evening. Gene is supposed to be released this morning and will be going home for a few days. By-pass surgery is scheduled for this coming Monday. Both are in good spirits.
-
Good to hear he's doing better!!!...I've heard about those 'energy' drinks...now I know.
WOW! :scared:
-
Prayers for God's best
-
Next time go with straight whiskey Gene...good luck sir...in my thoughts and prayers

Take care and get well soon, November is coming.

-
Wow...!
Get immersed in a 3-day outdoor project with the first non-rain days we've had and look what happens!
Sounded like bypass surgery was imminent, now maybe not?
From the bit I've heard of these guys, I'm not sure if the hospital staff might need our prayers as much as the boys and the family!
Regardless, add my voice to the prayers for a solid good fix that gets Mr. Ornery back in the woods on time!
-
I'm sure Gene will be playing the piano as well as he ever could. God Speed Gene.
