Well, official results are in, I have Multiple Sclerosis(MS). Doc says the amount of lesions on my brain are abnormal for someone my age and we have settled on a treatment. The lesions on my spinal column, which are what caused my last major attack, are also pretty significant. As those of you who have followed along know, my body did not fully recover from the last attack and I ended up with issues with my arms. I can't even string a bow, nonetheless shoot one, due to the weakness in my left arm and had to sit this season out. Turns out, the issues are permanent and will not go away so, my Trad journey is over. I am now starting a new journey in my life and since the disease affects everyone differently, my wife and I have been learning and reading a lot on it. There are only about 400,000 cases in the US and 80 something percent are women.
So far, I believe the VA is going to cover my treatments so, we settled on the latest called Copaxone. I will have to have injections for the rest of my life to slow the progression of the disease and slow brain shrinkage. My spinal fluid is inflamed and my doctor is concerned of another attack so, trying to get the treatment started asap.
Due to the severity of my last attack, I move slower and live 24/7 with the pain in my arms. I am giving up the hunting life all together. I tried to grouse hunt about a month ago with a buddy of mine and couldn't hold my 20ga. steady to even shoot. Not to mention it was hard to lift.
I really want to thank Terry, Curt, Rob and all the staff at Trad Gang for the decade of fun, learning, sharing and being able to be apart of this great family! I really enjoyed the journey!! Thank you to all the great friends I made over the years, though I never got to meet most of you, my campfire will always be open. (yes, I will continue to camp if possible) :D
So, with all that said, and my last bow hung up to be passed to my son, I bid this great family farewell. May your journey's continue to be bountiful, and your arrows true to the mark.
Your friend and still a Wannabe1, TW

Best of luck with your treatments. Just because you can't shoot anymore doesn't mean your not a Traditional Archer. Hope you hang out with us and chime in and teach the lessons you have learned.
Prayers to you and your family,
Big Ed

TW, God is " Healer" will be praying for that. Always enjoyed reading what you had to say - always positive and upbeat. Thanks and God bless .

TW:
Your trad journey may not be marked with trophies on the wall, but when it comes to bringing others along with your written word, your journey is filled with dozens or hundreds who have benefitted by your posts, poems and stories. All of us here on TG have been blessed by the time you chose to spend here.
My sister has an aggressive case of MS. You are right. It affects everyone differently. She was on a fairly grim trajectory of progressive attacks. Copaxone has done wonders for her and DRAMATICALLY slowed the progression for a long time. She was diagnosed over 20 years ago now. As you know, Copaxone is no cure, but for many folks it really helps.
All the best TW. Thank you. You have given us quite a bit here on TG. You are always welcome here. We are defined by what's within
-
We will keep you in our prayers.
-
Many many prayers sent for you and your wife...
-
Abba Father please wrap your loving and healing arms around this child of yours and give him comfort.
I ask in the name of your son Jesus.
Thank you!
So be it, God bless,Mudd

I hate to hear it Brother! My prayers are with you and your family.
-
Prayers sent.
-
Well that just plain sucks.
Thank you for taking the time to update us, but please know, as others have said, your trad journey can continue through the sharing of your knowledge. There are many who sit around a campfire that don't shoot or hunt. The fire circle is not complete without them. This fire circle is not complete without you. But above all you must do what's right for you.
God's mercy and healing will to you.
-
  Stay tough.......
-
Best of luck with the treatment.
-
TW - wishing all the best for you my Brother. Hang in there. Miracles do happen. At the very least you can pass on your love of Hunting and the outdoors on to your Children. Watching your Son or Daughter hunt and take Game is just as gratifying as doing it yourself.
Be Blessed my Brother.
Steve

Always hate to hear of this stuff. Can't even begin to imagine what you must be feeling in regards to having to give up trad archery. Even more so with the effects it's having on you and your family. I feel for you and wish you all the best in whatever lays ahead.
-
My heart goes out to you, and your family.Pray your future holds much happiness.
-
Tw,
I know there are no words to help with this, but I do wish you well. Life is not "fair" some times. But thankfully, you are still above the dirt. I have a good friend in south LA who was diagnosed with MS(i can't remember how long back), but it really takes a toll on him. He was an unbelievable archer before, and now he is just like the rest of us. lol. He can shoot! I hope the medicine gives you the response we are all hoping for! God Bless.
Daniel

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

T.W. you are in my thoughts and my prayers. Thank you for sharing yourself with all of us.

Take the steps you need to cope with your MS. God bless you and your family.

-
God bless you. Prayers sent.

Keep fighting, TW!
I always enjoyed reading your threads and poems!
Prayers up for you, my friend! I call you "my friend", and although I have never met you in person, do consider you a friend.

T.W. ,
I wish you happiness and the ability to cope with what is happening.
I truly hope the treatments will help you more than expected.
Good luck to you.

God Bless you T.W.

We all reach a point in our life that we realize that hunting is a blessing but our family and faith trump everything. Be encouraged and know God is mindful of you.
-
God bless you brother I wish you all the Best so sad to hear this!
-
Prayers for positive progress going forward from the treatments. As others have said, you're always still welcome at Tradgang, don't have to be an active Traditional hunter to pass on your wisdom and love for the sport.
-
God bless you buddy I will say a prayer for you. Take Care
Burton

God bless and prayers for you and your family.Hope all goes well.

TW ... You are a courageous hunter and person. I wish the best future for you and your family. I have a hunting friend who has MS. I went with him on his last real bow hunt for Caribou at McKay Lake. I was with him when he shot his last rifle deer. Eventually like you MS took away his hunting but not his spirit. Newer medication has helped him greatly and he still drives with hand controls. He has had MS for 23 years ...
I wish you the best and will pray for you and your family.
-
Prayers for you sir
-
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. You can still be a part of this family. You will always be welcomed here. Don't feel as though you don't have valuable insights that will help and inspire others who post here.
Good luck with your new journey, but remember that we are all behind you 100 percent.
-
Praying for you and your family TW.....

I am sorry to hear about your illness. May God grant you some relief from the pain. Like the others have said you can still visit here and offer advise from your experiences. Prayers for you and your family.
-
Sorry to hear that, brother. You know you will always be welcome here whether you can draw a bow or not. This campfire will always be open to you. Best of luck to you as you fight the monster inside you.

Prayers for you and your family through these times. Sounds like you are taking it head on. My father was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year and it is hard watching a man that is 75 who has worked from sun up to sun down not be able to continue doing what he has loved to do. I hope you can continue on with a new path, but certainly stick around on here..
-
Praying for you today. Thanks for sharing and the example you are providing.
-
Dang. That (obviously) sucks.
But, Just reading your posts, tells me that you have the toughness and the fortitude to take on this burden and I will hope that all goes the best it can for you and your family.
Having said that, don't feel like you have to leave the gang, nor cannot comeback in time when you may be ready. Obviously you can leave, but please don't feel like this thread - has to be the end.
It doesn't take much reading on here to realize that many folks are living vicariously though others on here, whether that is a hunt we cannot afford or physically handle, and maybe you will want to "continue the pursuit" later on to make your life a little more normal.
A lot of what we do here is a state-of-mind and that is all good.
All the best - Dave
.
-
Truly from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all! Already being a disabled Vet, this didn't help matters any that's for sure. LOL! :biglaugh: I gotta tell ya, a man couldn't be blessed more than with a family that is full of support. I don't mean just the home front family either.
I am not depressed or angry from any of this. My biggest worry was for my wife and kids but, they are real troopers and have been right in there learning with me. Even my 8yr old son, who I believe will be a much more successful hunter than his Papa, has did his part and helps when I can't lift certain things.
I have always been thankful for everything but, this Thanksgiving was even more special for me. When life throws you lemons, throw them back, get new seed and grow oranges! Thanks again my friends, TW.
-
wow! so sorry to hear that. best of luck to you in your treatment and your new journey.
-
we will keep you in our prayers.
-
Very sorry to hear this. Stay strong.
-
Good luck with your treatment, may God bless you and your family.

So sorry to read your post and know you have the strength to endure. I wish you the best of luck and certainly hope God blesses you and your family as well.
-
Maintain a strong will, and I hope that the VA will provide you with the treatment that you need. MS is a terrible disease (I have a brother who has it), but it is not necessarily the end. Keep fighting!
-
I sincerely wish you all the best.
-
Prayers for you and your family sent!
Wish you the best!

Adding my prayers to those offered above, and hoping for the best.

T.W., I have been fighting MS for the past 15 years. If you want to send a PM sometime, I'd be happy to give you my phone number and email. Perhaps I can offer a little perspective and a few tips you might find helpful, or at least lend an ear from one who understands.
I said I've been fighting MS... and that is the operative word for me- fighting! There is a lot I cannot do anymore that was a significant part of my life, but my method of dealing with this ugly disease has been to work, battle, accept what I must, and ADAPT! There is no more "individual" disease I am aware of. Whichever brain cells your immune systems attacks, tearing the myelin "insulation" off the wiring of the nerve, determines what is wrong with you.
I have a high school classmate who was diagnosed two years before me. His symptoms vary from mine, but he also freaked out and simply gave up, folding the tent of his life. That may not be the reason, but he has been in a nursing home bed for 10 years, and is nearly unable to speak.
I was forced to give up my farming career because safety became a real concern, and a couple years later, I had to close a business I loved as new physical problems advanced. But, I am grateful, and have it made compared to what a lot for people face.
Traditional archery and bowhunting is a facet of my "former life" I have fought long and hard to keep. My bows are 15# lighter in draw (and also lighter in physical weight). If I ever leave the ground, it is only in a ladder stand with a lifeline rope attached before the first step up, and I move with all the speed of a two-toed sloth! Tripping is an ever-present challenge, so I gave up on stalking, but my heart is encouraged simply by sitting by a tree in God's creation. Even with limitations that will probably never improve, I have taken 9 deer, two hogs, and a-l-m-o-s-t an elk with my bow since this all started. Life isn't easy... but it's GOOD!
I know from being there that you must be in a bit of a state of shock as you try to figure out what has happened to your formerly "invincible" body and what may be coming around the next bend in the physical road. I just want to encourage you to take some time, get some perspective, and not make any decisions about giving up things you love before you see what may actually be worked around and preserved.
Please pardon the length of a public post, but I wanted you to know that MS is not the end of life, even though it is life-changing for so many us.
Please feel free to touch base if you feel I can be of help in ANY way. I will include you in my prayers during this season, and I wish you the very best in what will likely prove to be an "interesting" journey.
Daryl

We all deeply enjoyed your posts and pray for the slowing ofnthat progression of your condition. My father also has symptoms very similar to MS from his time in the gulf war and exposure to mustard and other gases.
Thank you for your service sir!

We have greatly enjoyed your posts through the years. Prayers for you and your family are offered with the expectation that God has further work for you to do. God bless you and your family.

Sorry to hear your news. Good luck with everything.

Wow, that sucks. But even bigger WOW is your attitude, you have a great one and that will help you and your family more than anything. Hang in there and stay strong. Thoughts and prayers coming your way.

Stay as positive in the future as you are today. A coworker is on a weekly injection and has done remarkably well. He lost vision in an eye and was able to regain it. Keep the hope.

TW , I don't know you personally but as one of the gang you are one of us in spirit and friendship. Our prayers are with you in your journey against this disease, be strong in your faith and enjoy all the time you have left, be it a long time or whatever, God bless you and keep you .

Prayers sent for you brother. Good luck to you and your family.

Saddened to hear of your diagnosis, but inspired by your determination both prior to & after it. May God Bless you beyond all human comprehension. Praying for you and your Family!
-
TW, God moves in mysterious ways His wonders to perform. I realize the difficulty in understanding how God can move and work wonders in illness but His Grace is wondrously sufficient in all circumstances we find ourselves in. Like many have already done I want to encourage you with the thought that your journey has only taken a detour and though the challenges ahead will be different they can still be rewarding. God bless you and your family. 1 Cor. 4:7-11,16-17

Keep on fighting and live each day to its fullest. Thats all you can do with this life we are given. :campfire:

T.W., we all know that Trad guys like a challenge and I can tell that with your family you will face these challenges with strength and grace. Many yrs a go I lived in Salem and had 3 girls there, so I feel for you, just great country. Please continue to go to the woods even if you can't hunt, it will renew your spirit. Continue with the tradgang family, it will help keep you connected to what you love....

Thank you so much for the encouraging post! I may have laid down my bow but, I have not given up the fight. Quitting is just not in my nature. Believe me, if I could continue trad archery I would but, like I stated before, I can't even string my bow now. I do try and get out for walks in the woods but, driving has put a strain on my arms, (the vibrations) and they hurt so bad afterwards, I've kept them to a minimum.
To all I thank you and I am a believer of prayer! If the military taught me one thing, that is to adapt and overcome. :goldtooth:

TW, I can't begin to imagine how tough this has to be for you. All I can say is that you'll be in my thoughts and prayers.
I've been rooting for you for years in your quest for a big game animal and to know that might always remain a dream is certainly disheartening. But I hope and pray that treatments can at least provide some relief and give you many years of good living.
You may find happiness in other pursuits that provide joy equal to trad archery. This is just one of thousands of things people become passionate about. May your next one be even better!

Whip, funny you should mention that. Seems I am finally getting to experience something I've wanted to do since I was a boy, RC airplanes! :bigsmyl: I can take my little stool and sit while flying. Got a starter plane already and about to make contact with a local club to help me get started.
-
No, no, no!
TW - that is horrible news.
I hope you master this and get as much control over it as possible. You know your friends here are and will continue to be rooting for you.

TW, I've read and enjoyed many of your posts over the years. A loving family, good friends, a strong will, and a great attitude is your best ammunition in this battle. I hope you'll continue to visit and contribute to the site as you see fit. Prayers sent.
-
You will be in our daily prayers.
Keep on keeping on!
-
Keep your head up TW. It'll be a rough row to hoe, but I know you have it in you. Good luck-Hap

So sorry to hear of you diagnosis, Wannabe1. Just hearing "MS" brings back sad memories for me. My mother had it back in '77-81. After only four years, she passed at age 39 from complications of the disease (double pneumonia), when I was just 15. Treatment has come a long way though. I wish you all the best.
-
God speed, my friend.
God bless you and yours,
Rodd
-
I hope the new journey is merciful and brings you love and joy with the struggles you will face. I will miss your contributions to the forum. Good luck!

Don't leave! Still love for you to hang around and shoot the bull.
Anytime you might be feeling low, or even great...let us know.
We are all part of a big family, just because you cant shoot doesn't change that!
Talk to you soon I hope!
Dave
-
TW,
Always enjoyed your post as well. Your positive and adaptive attitude is an example to more than you will ever know.
I think that RC airplane idea is great! I've always wanted to try that as well but just can't get past thinking about crashing a couple hundred $ into the ground. You've got me thinking about it again though!
Prayers for you. One of them will be that you have opportunity to witness and be an aid to others.

So sorry to hear this. Stick with us though. We are all brothers and sisters. It is sad for sure, but you don't have to be able to do it, to love it. We still need you.

I, like so many others here am saddened to hear of such a blow dealt to such a good person.
I too want you to know that I enjoyed your contributions on various threads... and I hope that you will have the strength to stay with us a while longer.
Whether you shoot a bow or hunt or not is insignificant - you are a traditional bowhunter and always will be.
No one knows what tomorrow has in store.
Your courage and outlook on life is an inspiration to all of us.
-
I just joined the trad gang thers alot of good people here sorry to here about that and hope your camp fire burns a long time god bless you and your wife

Stay around the camp fire friend. I have an idea.... Take your years of awesome experience and out then on paper to share. And on good days maybe you can be a guide to start the next generation on their great adventure. I'm going you find a way to keep your wild at heart spirit alive through all the trials ahead.
-
Prays for you my friend
-
It was really great knowing you. Keep up your positive attitude and I hope for the best.
Take care,
Ryan Sanpei

I am saddened to hear that you are not able to bid your body to do all of your will, and pray that your abilities will return.
While your adventures afield may be curtailed, your fine mind and the knowlege that you have garnered in your lifetime are so essential to the growth of newcomers to our beloved sport. Please stay and mentor those who come behind us. Your years, condensed, bring a sharp rise in the learning curves of archery's newcomers. You are so valuable to us!
Again, my best wishes and prayers are yours for the taking.
Killdeer :wavey:

I wish you the best of luck, one of my Uncles and a cousin on my moms side of the family both have MS. It is amazing what medicine can do to suppress the symptoms.
While I am a newbie to archer, and the tradgang forum, some of your threads have been my favorite. In particular the 40-45# harvest thread. I hope with all my heart that you find an effective treatment and that you will continue to frequent this forum,
God bless
-
Best of luck to you
-
It really sucks you have to go through this. Have always enjoyed reading your contributions and would like to see them continue.
all the best

An old sailor can still sit and look at the sea. I, along with many others here, hope you continue to chime in from time to time.
As I post this the thread is 12 pages long. We were pulling for your endeavors as a hunter, and with this new challenge it's clear that we're still pulling for Wannabe1.
Take care, and all the best. Chase

Prayers for you and your family!

Wow, my heart goes out for you & your family. Working in healthcare for over 25 years now has let me see many sad stories, but happy endings in some cases too. Good luck to you & keep us informed. Many prayers to you from your fellow gang members.
-
I can type no words and express no sentiments half as well as those before me.
I will, however, say this:
Many parents teach too much with words and not nearly enough by example. By your own examples you are teaching your son true character and he is blessed to have such direction in his life.
Best regards,
Dusty

So sorry to hear of this. May the good Lord watch over you and yours during this very trying journey. God bless you all, God bless us all.
-
This really puts in to perspective the things we all seem to take for granted daily like the simple act of stringing our bows. Prayers for you and your family sent to the Father.
-
Prayers for you and you family.
-
Good luck, I will include you on my prayer list and keep you in my thoughts. Look into bee sting therapy my mom had MS and she used it to be pain free for many years. Corse my mom was a hillbilly who never believed in medicine if she could not use it.

Praying for you and your family. But come and visit us on tradgang. This your home to.
-
God Bless you and yours.
-
I've been thinking about you and your situation and regret that I have nothing more meaningful or eloquent to say other than our thoughts and prayers are with you. I would love to see you stay on the gang as we all live vicariously through each other and your new perspective, however unwanted, unwarranted and unfair, may one day help one of us when faced with a similar situation.
-
I have a family member and an in law with MS Wannabe. It is a hard road, but through perseverance and taking one day at a time it does not mean the end of enjoying life. Keep the faith. I wish you well. Have you tried some very low poundage to at least keep you shooting for fun? All the best to you. You don't need to leave here, I hope you lurk or at least join the campfire when it suits you.
-
Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!
-
Holy Cow...how did I miss this???? I must have been in NY.

Miss your posts, always enjoyed your writing.
Hope you are well.

I agree with YORNOC!
You have plenty of insights about bow hunting and shooting with recurves (or longbows) that can be shared with others. You would be able, if you are willing, to help some appreciate more the opportunities they have.
(Plus, I want to know how that RC business works out!)
-
You will be in my prayers.
Hang in there buddy!
-
Prayers to you and your famil  y.

Sorry to read this....I wish you the best my friend!!!

-
Best wishes to you TW, I hope and pray you are getting the help you need at the VA.
-
At risk of getting banned by mentioning crossbows, may I humbly suggest that if you could still enjoy sitting out in the fall you might look into a xbow? There are ones out there that are recurve prod and very simple - and bow like - mechanically. With someone to help you cock it and setup, ground blind and tripod, it might be the ticket to getting back to at least a little hunting?
Best of luck to you wherever the road leads!!
-
Wannabe, I am sorry and will pray for you. I want to thank you for sharing your journey and time as a brother of the stickbow. You will be missed, but remembered with each shot of the bow.
-
so very sorry to hear this and wish you all the best ....
-
Hey man, you brought tears to my eyes.. hope the medicines work for you and you feel better soon.
-
I'm sorry to hear about this and wish you the best.

T.W.,
I have not read all the responses to your thread so I don't know everything that has been said.
We do not really know one another other that what we have shared here on TradGang but I would just like to encourage you in the truth that peace and joy can be realized even in pain and suffering. I know to some that statement may sound ridiculous but I hope you understand it to be true.
My prayers go out to you, your wife, and family. I pray for your healing but should this burden be your lot to battle I pray you and your family be given the grace and courage to accept the struggle. Fight hard and lean heavy on the Great Physician.
God bless you and yours.
-
I pray God continues to show you his presence in your life and you can realize an even more fulfillment than archery was able to provide.
-
has anyone heard from T.W.? Wondering how he is doing!?
You're in my prayers, TW.
-
Sad to hear news like this. I hope your body responds well to the treatments and medicines.

I cannot begin to express the heartfelt thanks my wife and myself feel toward the members and Admin. of this site! Thank you Paul for the message on my churches FB page! I am very very appreciative for all the well wishes and prayers for me and my family!
Brief update: I am still dealing with the nerve pain in both my arms and hands, cannot string or shoot my bow, nerve pain is down in both my feet now so, walking or standing for any length is a challenge. The injections I have to do for the rest of my life so far as we can tell are working. I go into the VA Hospital in Portland, OR. on the 30th for more MRI's to verify this and to see if there are anymore lesions on my brain or spine.
I had another fall down my stairs so, the VA has 80% disabled me but, at the 100% rate. I get very tired after any activity 2hrs or more and crash for hours. (this is hard coming from someone who never took naps of any kind!) My family (bless their hearts!) have been really helpful and understanding. My boy Robert seems like a mother hen sometimes in his efforts to want to help! :biglaugh: I have a great neighbor who does my lawn for me and helps with some outside stuff. He had a custom walking stick made for me for Christmas to help me get around. It is very special!
The story of my stick: My neighbor has given me a gift that literally had me in tears. 'Course, I held them in check as best I could. :-) Knowing and watching me sometimes struggle with my disability, my neighbor Scott, had a very special walking stick made for me and presented it to me this afternoon. Here is the story of my special stick...
The top is fashioned from the antler of a buck Scotts grandfather shot in 1932, the braided grip area is made with the colors from the Army dress uniform (his way of saying "thank you" for my service), the tassel is made from genuine horse hair and the shaft is made from a 1901 oak plank from the Crabtree, OR covered bridge where Scott's family is from. I will put it to good use!
Here's a pic from this afternoon of me with my stick.

I have had to make a lot of adjustments but, the military taught me one thing if anything. Adapt and Overcome! With the help of the good Lord and my family, I am doing this day by day. Again, I thank you all and wish you straight shooting and campfire tales!
Your friend and brother, TW. (Wannabe1)
-
TW-It sounds like you're in good care by your family, neighbor, friends and your church. You've been in my thoughts and prayers recently. I wish you the very best, my friend. God speed and thank you for your service to this great nation. Awesome stick too!

Really good to hear from you TW! Prayers for you and yours. Cool walking stick, and I'm jealous of that Bi-Plane ride. I bet that was awesome!
-
The best thing about that plane ride was, not only did I get to fulfill a life long dream of mine but, it was my son Roberts first plane ride ever and I got to share it with him!
We have since flown to Disnelyland in CA. so, he is ok with planes now. :D
-
Wish you well!
Nick
-
Good to hear from you! I always enjoyed your post, and appreciate your help on a riser I was in question about some years back. Good luck with everything!

I'm just now seeing this and humbly apologize for the late response! I am truly moved by all the prayers and well wishes for me through this difficult time of my life. The journey has been hard and my family is no longer with me. Wife left me last Sept. (Have no ill will for her as it takes two to make or break things!). I get my son on a regular basis and he is what motivates me to keep moving on. As long as the good Lord allows it, I'll be here for him! Check the Pow Wow as I'm going to try and hang around for a while this time. :-) TW
-
Good to see you posting again...
You'd forewarned us you'd be absent so I doubt there is a call for an apology... but it is heartwarming and sad at the same time to read your most recent post.
Sorry for the loss of your mate at a time like this... We can't replace family but you can surely use this electronic forum to help keep the shiney side up time to time...
It's a gift to be able to hold others in prayer...
MS isn't a good diagnosis, but many find many years of satisfactory living with today's treatments...
May your journey be a blessed one!
-
Thanks Doc! It has been interesting to say the least. Not ready to give up though so, as long as I can, I'll keep pushing forward. :bigsmyl:
-
U R welcome for sure...as others have said here or on PW, attitude is everything...
I met some fine folks in your situation medically who found some nutritionals to helped immensely, but it's an alternative approach for sure..
One chap got up out his wheel chair and chased his young children around the yard, but none of the good stuff is cheap... Email or PM me if you'd like to hear more otherwise, carry on and keep strokin! :jumper:
