Title: Arrow Weight Minimums
Post by: Idahoeyes on May 23, 2004, 09:05:00 AM
For those of you who have been...what's the minimum arrow weight, particularly for wildebeast and zebra, since I understand they are the toughest plains game around.

I am having arrows made to a finished weight of around 610 or so, but wanted heavier and am wondering if I should buy the 190 grizzlies instead and add 30 more grains.  Any thoughts?

PS ONLY 32 DAYS TO GO BEFORE THE BIG TRIP!

You did not mention your bow weight! however I shot 600-610 out of 57# and had no troubles with penetration. I'll be shooting about that same combination this year also. don't think you will have a problem at all.

Shaun I used carbons that I weighted up to an even 600 grains with magnus 2 blade heads, combo worked perfectly combined with the 60 lb widow, Shots were all within 14 yds and I passed on anything beyond that. Everything you read about the game being tough is true, however those hit tight in the "V" did not go far( 100-150 yds.)Take care and have a good trip.

Thanks guys.  I will be shooting a 54# Robertson recurve and grizzly 160 grain broadheads.  Sounds like I should be ok.  BTW, what species did you guys take?

Man, I can't wait!  31 Days.

Sean,

Am I ever happy for you! Africa has been a dream of mine for years! I was to get married this year and that was to be our honeymoon. However the wedding fell through and so did the trip   :( ! I think I'm more upset about the trip   ;)  LOL! I will get there though! You will have to let us know how it was and the performance of your bow! I think that it will be fine. (If you get TBM, read "You're Hunting With That?" by Tina Portman, very interesting.)

Have a great trip (Iknow you will   :D  ),
Donavan

Dononvan,
Wow, sorry about the trip.  Will keep you posted and thanks for the well wishes.  My 14th wedding anniversary is the week before my trip, so last weekend I booked a 3 day trip w/o the kids to Las Vegas.  First time my wife and I will be alone for a weekend since June 1990, but I thought it would be good to do it before I left.  Your message reminded me that I'm really, really lucky to be married to my wife.  Good luck in the future.

On African plains game, penetration usually isn't the problem. Almost all species are thin skinned and light-boned, and anything adequate for elk will be fine. Your set up sounds fine to me. The problem is shot placement, as the vitals on some species are higher and farther forward than what we are used to. You are right to respect wildebeest and zebra -- the other two tough ones are gemsbok and warthog. Don

Don,
Thanks for the input and welcome back online.  You must have been hunting, in say Alaska?!?  Anyway, it's good to see you back posting.

I'm with Don.  The set up sounds fine.  If anything, I'd go for more bow weight.

Hasta La Pasta..
