Title: African Plains Game Hunt
Post by: ncsturkey on August 11, 2005, 08:18:00 PM
I'm in the planning process for a trip to S.Africa in the Fall of 2006.  If anyone has a recommendation for an outfitter, any information would be helpful.  Thanking you in advance.Rod

Rod- I used Neil @Bowhunting Safari for my last three trips to Africa and would suggest you get in touch with him. He can answer any questions which you may have and "iron-out" all the details from outfitter to planing to equipment and travel.

Rod,  I just got back from South Africa (first time)to Stewart Dorrington's Melorani.  I booked the hunt through Neil Summers at Bowhunting Safaris (as referred to in Jimmy's note).  Put it this way, book the same way, go the same place and you will have NO regrets.  I have already booked a return hunt (taking my bride this time).  Saw so many animals every day, I was exhausted.  Shots less than 20 yards are the order of the day.  Lodging is fantastic, and the hosts (Stewart, his wife, Bronwyn, and PH Marco DuPlesis) are 5-Star++.

Thanks for the input.  I've talked to Neil and found that Melorani is booked for '06.  I'll go elsewhere next year and plan to go to Melorani in '07 I guess. Plans now are to go with Dries Visser. Thanks again for the input.

ncsturkey, Dries Vissers is great.  I have heard good things about Melaroni and Gretaer Kuduland Safaris also.  I have only been to Vissers and I am going back in 2007.  Joseph

The best you will ever find, in my opinion, is Greater Kuduland Safaris.  They are the oldest game ranch in South Africa and, I believe, the largest by quite a bit.

They also offer the largest number of species.  Somewhere around 24-26 are available.

I have just returned from my 13th hunt with them and would be happy to put you in touch with them.  I'm NOT a paid booking agent, but have sent dozens of bowhunters there. If you would like some assistance or a chance to talk, just email me at [email protected] and I'll be happy to assist.

There are a lot of good places and some that are not very good at all.  You MUST do your homework before booking.  I've seen a lot of bowhunter photos with Kudu in the 45 inch range.  It's rare to take one at Greater Kuduland under 53-54 inches and there are many 57-58 bulls taken there.  Ditto for Gemsbuck and all other species.  Greater Kuduland mangages for QUALITY!

I just came back from Melorani, took a magnificent kudu bull and several other animals and had a great time. Booked it through Neil Summers who will do everything possible for you to have an excellent hunt!
