Title: Going to South Africa in late AUG
Post by: Lonesome Wind on July 04, 2008, 05:10:00 PM
I'm going to the Limpopo region in South Africa the last week of Aug. & the first week of Sept. & I was wondering what kind of weather to expect? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hot and humid, Sept and Oct will normally be hottest months in that region.

Still chilly enough in the mornings to need a windbreaker on the way to the stand. Plenty warm during the day though. Where are you going?

Barrel and Bow safari's in Mokopane. Marco Du Plessis is the PH. It'll be my first trip to the Dark Continent and I'm very excited!

We were at Visser's last year in mid-late August. A bit west of Thabazimbi. Mornings and evenings were cold but days were quite warm and dry.

Try to play with the  weather history of Thabazimbi (http://www.wunderground.com/history/station/68253/2007/9/1/MonthlyHistory.html)  - or go from here to an other station more related to your hunting site.

You will love it. I know Marco and the area quite well, it is very beautiful and situated up against the northern edge of the Waterberg. Mornings will be chill, you get frost in the lowlaying valleys in winter but by late august the days will warm up, if there is no wind it will get hot. August September is before the rainy season so it will not be humid unless there are early rains. Our annual Traditional shoot is held on a neighboring farm, the area is vrot with bushpig, warthogs etc. Magical huge Kudu!
Enjoy!

Thanks everyone! Hearing that I'm going to a good area gets me even more excited to go! I was glad to hear about Kudu, they're on my list of "wants". I'm also hoping for Gemsbok, Zebra, Impala, and Bushpig. Anyone ever tried a ghillie suit for stalking in the bush?

The bush in that area is fairly thick in the riverine valleys and kloofs, but there are also open grassy plains. A full ghillie suit will be clumsy (and hot )to walk with in the thick stuff, a lighter 'leafy suit' is better. Walk very slowly and watch the wind. Marco will help you.
