After watching a buffalo hunting video yesterday, I came to wonder. When one of these guys...
... took 6 shots from a .500 caliber rifle, before dropping to it's knees ... how the hell will I ever be able to take it down with a bow? :(
-
you can take one dawn with a bow no problem
just need the right set-up, one of the benefits that plays in the favor of the bowhunter is the silence of the bow greatly reducing the animals adrenalin.
i know of Buffalo that where killed with a .22
and some that have taken several hits with 416 rig or 458 lot
quite a few getting killed every year with a bow
here's some film i took of a buddy of mine "Mick from Trophy Bowhunts Australia" shooting a Water buff

Completely forgot the reduced adrenaline due to virtually no sound from the bow. Those .500 magnum blows must've definetely startled it!
It's 1:26 AM here, so I'll look forward to watch the video tomorrow. Thanks for answering before my beddytime

Awesome video! :clapper:
-
Clint Micks set-up i think was similar to yours about 69lbs at 30" draw 820gr arrows
the long draw really helps
the shot was strong quartering away it was about prefect
they are so much fun to bowhunt
i hope you get a few killed when you get back home

here's another good one

That was awesome stuff Andy...thanks for sharing!
-
Andy,
I just about s%&t myself watching that second video :scared:
Do you need me to send you some new camo britches :wavey:

OK Shooting a 43#@28" BW Recurve. 43# due to rotator cuff problems some years back. What would be the absolute MINIMUM poundage needed to KILL a Cape Buff?? All things as shot placement arrow and broadhead wieght are already considered perfect. Keep in mind that training /practice with heavy poundage will most likly result in shoulder damage. What is absolute minimum to still be in the game?
-
Andy,
Great video's I can watch them over and over!!

Cool Andy. I would have liked to get that close to a cape buffalo in Zim, but alas, it didn't happen. I would love to go hunt buff in Australia too. I think you are spot on with the bow and arrow combination recommendation. A long draw is definitely very nice when trying to launch a heavy arrow.

Hi McHunt
The guys at SABA (South African Bowhunters Association www.sabowhunters.co.za) (http://www.sabowhunters.co.za)) will be able to give you a good indication when it comes to African game. I recently did a Bowhunters Proficiency Certificate (soon to be law before hunting in SA) and we were given quite an intricate formula to determine our limitations with our particular setup. This also takes into account the reaction time - smaller game is quicker and vice versa, as well as your distance from the animal, broadhead cutting diameter, speed etc etc. The general setup guideline to ensure an ethical hunt on a Cape Buffalo is around 900gr @ 218fps or similar to ensure 95 ft.lbs or 0.87 slug feet per second. I know it all sounds very detailed - especially when it's usually the compound guys who are caught up in the speed trap - but attempting a hunt with the incorrect setup is not only unethical, but will, sooner or later, add fuel to the anti-hunting fire. Best bet is to contact Harry Marx (he compiled the Certificate manual) who is the SABA chairman, for clearer guidelines.
I am also limited to a 45# bow because of shoulder injury, but finances appear to be the biggest problem concerning the size game I can hunt.
I hope you get some help from Harry.
