Here are some pics of my recent hunt with my son (15). At the 2010 Traditional Archers of South African Championships, he won the junior category - and with it a Red Hartebeest hunt. As it turned out, we didn't get closer than 100m from a RH, but managed to have success with others:

The Warthog ran about 200m in 15 seconds and that was that. Great shot with a 45# Bamboo Viper.

I know it is poorly superimposed on a background :-) Sorry about that. I shot the Blue Wildebeest just before sunset & were being eaten alive by mozzies - so we took the pic at the base - too much blood on tiles. I used a 55# PSE Talon. He anly ran about 150m as the arrow pretty much went right through.

Young Springbok that also only went about 100m - arrow passed through. Really tender backstraps the next evening!
A few Blue Wildebeest steaks :)

Great bonding time. I just booked my first out of state hunt with my son (8 by then) for this fall. This just gets us more excited thinking about it. Thank you for sharing with us.

Thats Awesome, Congrats to you both
Where about in SA do you live?

@ Buff. Bud, one day when I'm big, I'll trade my 'poor man's buffalo' for a real one. Just takes a bit of saving. Don't mind if it's a Cape or Water Buffalo - both would do it for me :)
@ Mike Vives. Wouldn't trade these times for anything. We've been shooting together for the past 3 years. I believe it's helped bridge a generational gap and prevent the common yet unnecessary distancing that often happens through puberty. He's turning 16 next week and our relationship remains strong and with the correct perspective. Enjoy your hunt with your son!
@ tradtusker. We live in Springs - east of Johannesburg. The hunt took place on Montague farm - between Bloemfontein & Kimberly - about 6hrs drive away. The owners are some of the friendliest people I know.

Hey Brian,
That is awesome stuff there! I must say, I'm growing more and more excited by the day, as we're coming back to SA for good later this year. Hoping to get some memories like that then. Not sure where we going to be living yet, but more likely Krugersdorp near my boet Chris Zeelie. Maybe we can catch up then.

Love to connect when you're here, Pete. I'll be seeing Chris later today in fact :-)

Nothing better than hunting with your son. I did a lot of that and have a wealth of wonderful memories of being in the field with my boy. I'm glad to know the two of you could share those times together, and I wish you many more opportunities to spend quality time with one another.

Wow! My son (4) and I spend a half hour or so shooting our bows every afternoon, sometimes my daughter (8) joins in. Its amazing how this time we spend sharing a butt, fuses our souls together. I cannot wait for the day we share a campfire in the hunting field and chat away over the day's hunt.

Some of my best memories are hunting with my old man too. Glad to see you guys enjoying each other and the hunt so much. Good work.
