Title: Momentum VS Kinetic Energy-Article
Post by: JimB on May 17, 2011, 07:46:00 PM
I just ran into this article the other day.Maybe many of you have already seen it.Titled:Momentum VS Kinetic Energy For Dummies:How A Traditional Bow Kills".If you like this sort of thing, you might find it a good read.I thought it was very well written.

Interesting stuff.  Will see in a few days if my stickbow can "slug" its way through a few animals.  I know ill be stickin to jackals and hares if i shoot by the kinetic energy tables.

Good luck on your hunt.I hope you post lots of pictures when you return.

I've hadn't heard that argument until someone mentioned in a thread here on Tradgang. It definitely makes sense to me. Thanks for posting up an actual article. I enjoyed the reading.

That is a great read which examples how our equipment works. I killed a 670# Kudu on my last trip with my 50#@my draw Sarrels longbow. It was down for the count in just over 100yds. I am headed back at the end of June and have a Blue Wildebeest up at the top of my list. I know if my heads are sharp and I put the arrow in the right place it will all be good.

I have had this argument with compound shooters before. KE over-values velocity (squared) while giving little evaluation to weight in comparison. A heavy arrow with a SHARP broadhead will do the trick from a slower bow. Speed is nice for trajectory, but isn't the end all for being effective. I think momentum is far more accurate in relation to penetration.

As an engineer I get excited by these nerdy stats I guess.  :)

By far the most accurate mathematical model available is the one currently used by SABA. It combines kinetic energy, momentum, broadhead design, drag of the arrow through meat, etc etc.
If you just want to use the web calculator to check your equipment choice you can try it at  http://www.sabowhunters.co.za/swd/asp/MinReq.asp

Basically momentum means the most for arrows that hit only meat. However, if you strike bone kinetic energy plays a bigger role in breaking through. I can post the entire formula here if you like but it is faarrrrr too much math for most ppl.
