Title: One piece longbow to South Africa...?

I'm having difficulty finding baggage restrictions
, via a SAA flight, in regards to checking a longbow length piece of luggage.  Lots of info on weight, but nothing in regards to possible charges for exceeding the standard length restrictions.  Thanks for your help fellas.

folks fly golf bags all the time.
they will check it a sporting equipment

Traveled to Namibia many times on SA Airlines from Perth. The longbow shold not be a problem with SAA...
You will need to check it in as normal baggage and then you will be asked to take it to over sized baggage

I suggest that you...

Place it in a piece of THICK PVC pipe with a screw connector on one end...

I put the bow in a protective bag and put a large rubber stopper on each end of the bow...
I attach a piece of paracord on the stopper that goes into the tube first...
Place in the tube...
Place SOCK in the tube to fill the last little gap to secure the bow in position...

I've flown to SA with a one piece longbow several times just in a PVC tube. Granted my longbow is only 54", but it shouldn't be an issue. Most airlines are used to golf clubs and fishing rods.

Between 1995 and 2009 I flew to Africa 3 times.  The first two times were to RSA and the last to Namibia.  I have only flown with my one piece longbows and arrows in the green cloth covered tubes available from 3 Rivers Archery.  Other than the usual bit of having to say it is archery equipment and not a gun, I have not had any trouble.  The last trip from Philadelphia to Frankfurt and then on to Namibia with Lufthansa and then Air Namibia was smooth, and I didn't even get charged for oversize even though I was prepared for it.    So, so far I have had a perfect record and would do it again.

One of the things that could be a problem once you get there is the size of the hides

in some cases they're just like pop up blinds so I would check with your outfitter first to see if there'll be enough room in most  to shoot

just be careful of just a pvc tube, i have had them fall between the rollers on the conveyors, and no one will go in to fetch them until the designated maintenance day.
so now i tape mine to my back pack, so it is one unit.
never a problem since
