Title: Bamboo backed static build along
Post by: horseapple on January 21, 2004, 01:06:00 AM: I've Been meaning to start a static build along but never have had time, theres been some good build alongs showing how to make the selfbow recurve but none for the bamboo backed static recurve... I have a few statics to build so I said heck why not, I've always enjoyed Ferrets and John Scifres build alongs... Ok what I have is a homepage with msn so bare with me:) heres the link to follow the progress of building the bamboo backed static recurve... hope you guys enjoy it. I'll be adding pictures as I go so be patient... Also feel free to ask any questions.

I notice you add a piece between the stock and the backing. Is this a piece to transition between bending and non bendin to keep the handles from popping off? If not what purpose does it server?

JD,

10-20 hours in the form clampd up seems like a long time. But I've only done one static. We steamed it and bent it and held it for 10-5 min. Alot of the curve relaxed. Seems your way works pretty good. I will have to try it one day when I build another recurve.

Post by: horseapple on January 21, 2004, 08:43:00 AM: lilhunter, dang your getting ahead of me:) what your seeing is an 18" 3/16" center lam, its put in to keep the handle area from bending, my slats are 7/16" - 1/2" when glue up and I feel like that area needs additional beefing up.

There reason the Bulls in the shop is that I don't have ceilings bid enough to have it in the house... believe me I've tried:)

I got the piece from Greg Coffey, you can order it in .125 thickness which is 1/8" and 36x1.5 inch strips... I was out of ea-40 smooth-on so I used industrial strength thick super glue.

It looks like the slat is tapered in the last few inchs where you bend it. Is that just an optical illusion caused by the aluminum banding?

Also, I assume you just need a piece of banding about 12" long, that is a yard stick cut into 3 pieces. The backing and clamp must try to "walk" up the slat as you bend. Do you clamp it way tight or just let it slip a little?

I think I mention on one of the pic's about the strap being a yard stick cut in 3 pieces:) also mentioned the reason for clamping the strap before you make the bend, but I didn't mention how thick the bend area is thanks bud:) I taper the last 8" to around 3/8"... Just got in from work... gonna relax abit and head to the shop to look at some bamboo.

All those little tidbits (like boiling w/ the strap on, clamping the strap prior to the bend, and heat torching, etc.) are the things that make a project work versus fail. I'm just starting my 1st BBO and even though it's not a static recurve, I'm hoping to gain a lot of valuble info. and watchouts from your postings/pics. Thanks for the build along!

That statement was made as a compliment to the generosity and expertise of a man who makes awesome bows,is a true expert at it (in my opinion one of the top 3 wood bow builders in the country), and could make a living from doing it. (as opposed to a wood hack like myself)

Nice tip on the use of dry heat while the wood is on the cull. I'll try that on the selfbows that I straighten on a cull.

I sure would like to come up one of these weekends and learn a thing or two.

Now get to work and finish this thing.

Post by: tom sawyer on January 22, 2004, 03:58:00 PM: I can't believe I spent all that time rasping my bamboo down to near thickness, when I had the bandsaw sitting there. That alone was worth the time reading this thread. And I like the additional heating of the bent area, I do this a lot of times when I have a piece of wood on a form. Although, I think I've actually got some stuff too dry from being overly zealous about heat treating. Too dry resulting in that popping sound you hear just before your bow becomes a volunteer takedown.

I'll be looking for a used one down the road and need suggestions on hp ratings, size(12",14"), and manufacturer. Anyone heard of a Cummings Industrial Tool Band Saw? They send me a flyer this week and had a new 14", 3/4hp on sale for $229. Is this a good deal or piece of crapola?

Post by: horseapple on January 23, 2004, 08:36:00 AM: S&S My bandsaw is an older type 12" craftsman, I've had it about 9yrs... it has a 1.8horse motor which is plenty enough to cut osage up to 4" thick, its been a workhorse for me but I know its limits, having a 3-T.P.I. blade is mainly what I use.... the cummings that you tal;k about is one of the taiwany made type, about the same as the Harbor Freight crap, stay away form them... If I was in the market to get another it would be a 14" delta, jet or grizzly, lots have been said about these three, even tho none are american made.

They have a 3/4 horse 14" saw for $320 and a 1hp 14" for $375. The 3/4 horse will serve you well for your purposes for years to come. It's the same saw they've been using at MoJam for 3 years. Someone finally managed to break a shaft on it last year but I'm sure a LOT of proper sawing practices were being violated to cause the failure. I'm surprized it went THAT long before breaking.

Like J.D. said it is important to use the right blade for the job and make sure your saw is tuned properly. The big four mfg are Delta, Jet, Grizzly, and Powermatic. Delta does have one bandsaw being made in the U.S. That is their X5 series 14 inch, cost is $900. In my opinion the best 14" being made today is the powermatic: 1.5 horsepower, Carter bandsaw guides, 4" dusport, and a quick release blade tension release. Any of the above mentioned bandsaw have good warranties, Jet, Delta, and Powrmatic also have service centers in most big cities if anything goes wrong.

Mike and I are planning on bringing Lance P. down to learn to do the BBO thing. He has a starter that Sparky sent him, and ifn he doesn't screw it up like I did my first, then maybe we can show him how to do it right.

JohnBow's also got one to finish, and we (Mike and I) are ready to start another one.

Ralph really likes the one that we built for him. Named it "Woo-Woo". I'll let him explain that.

Post by: horseapple on January 24, 2004, 11:24:00 AM: Mike, the bend is just past 90* what your seeing covering the form is another strap of aluminium... its screwed to the bottom and hammered to the shape, which mostly I bent with my hands, I then screwed it to the cut out opening... what I found out is that the wooden form was leaving marks on my selfbow statics when clamped tite while wet, even tho it was smooth the grain would impregnate on to the back of the stave... by adding the smooth strap all was fixed:)
Lance, Mike answered the question very good, altho I hardly never sand the nodes down flat, heard to many stories about splinters lifting

Post by: DCM on January 24, 2004, 05:24:00 PM: I'm not clear on the shape of the center lam JD. Is it like a simple triangle or do you leave a flat under the handle or is it like a diamond? I assume you leave the peak of the triangle to the back side.

Real find build along bud. Real fine. You do a great service. I love that trick to leave the end posts out until you get the centers set. Simple, effective, clever.

Post by: horseapple on January 24, 2004, 06:52:00 PM: David, the 18" center lam is nothing but a filler for thickening the handle area... it can be any wood with my measurements being 1.5"X18" and 1/4" thick all I do is taper from the center to the ends that way when its all said and done it will be feathered at the ends and around 3/16" at the center... clear as mud...

Brian your right not much limb movement on these bows, makes for a really fast shooter... gonna take it out of the hotbox around 7pm it'll be one ugly sucker:)

Just happens I know this feller with some osage slats, purpleheart, paudak, etc.LOL.

On the Urac, what's the open time on that stuff ? Plenty of time for clamping ? Also, would Resourcinal work too ?
I found one of those alum yardsticks at work the other day, and the letterign was worn to the point where you couldn't read it. I knew it had a use somewhere.

You mention the slats are qtr sawn. Other cuts would work too ?

Post by: the Ferret on January 25, 2004, 10:35:00 AM: Building bows is a lot easier than doing a build along eh JD? Setting up pics, making sure the pic tells the story, remembering to explain in enough detail, it takes like 3 times as long to build a bow when you are doing a build along!

... once one does a build along he REALLY appreciates when someone else does one.I appreciate you doing this one, that's for sure :thumbsup:

Post by: horseapple on January 25, 2004, 10:16:00 PM: Tim... not sure about the radius, but the angle is a tad past 90* The experience that I've had with Urac is that I can get about 6 months tops from first opening the can... clamping will depend on how warm you have your shop, if its around 80* you have about 20 minutes... 70* about 15 minutes if your shop is cooler than 70* you can bring the material thats going to be glue into your house to let them warm up then take back out and start the glue up... i always get my liquid part of the Urac to in house temp. Can answer your ? about resourcinal never used it... I've used clear, quarter and edge grain and see no difference in the finished bow, you just have to be more carefull on the quarter and edge the knots will go from side to side instead of belly to back... I glued up another recurve tonight but it was one of my working type curves.

Ever run into any problems using a handle piece made from multiple lams? - such as several 1/8" lams of osage and walnut? These would have been glued up into a billet ahead of time, of course.

Obviously this recurve will have a lot less working limb. Do you stretch the pattern some or make it wider some ? My pattern is just shy of 1 and 3/4 wide at the fades. (I'd rather take some off as opposed to putting some back on if you catch my drift )

Also would other backings work here, such as hickory ? Might be a crapshoot on that one , heh ?

I have a friend that brought back some baleen from AK. He wants me to try it on a bow. This might be a good one to try on once I've built a few.

Post by: horseapple on January 27, 2004, 01:02:00 AM: Dina, your up late, your bow is sleeping in the house right now, temp. outside is around 20* got to trace out the outline of the handle on the boo and then shape the flares, I like getting the handle smoothed into the limbs before I start the tillering.

Tom about the multi-lam handle, I've done a couple and they turned out looking fine, instead of a glued up chunk of lams I glued each 1/8" together all at once, they bent just fine with the belly curve, hardest part was keeping all of em' from slipping while clamping them:)

Sure makes me wish I had about a grand to spend on power tools and a place to put them. Really looking forward to the rest of the process. You gonna show all the details of the finish work J.D.? Like how to make them fancy overlays and the skived leather for the handle.

By the way, where in OK are you? I'm flying back and forth between DFW and Kansas City every week and might end up driving sometime soon. Gonna have to bring the truck back up to MO to reregister it. Are you anywhere near I 35? It'd be kinda fun to stop by if ya didn't mind.

You gotta admit it's much better instruction than you can get from most books; and by doing a static, the readers can make inferences for other types of bows.

Post by: horseapple on February 02, 2004, 02:20:00 PM: Mike, yes you taper both edges and if you've done the job right the leather strip will have a crown in the middle of the side that your sanding... I use contact cement on all surfaces and start my glueing at the rest area... do a test run like I show in the last picture, glueing your wrap at a certain spot will tell you how it will feel when you grip your bow, I like my left pointing finger to be in a groove in front... kindof like having 4 finger grooves... you can tell if you need to start your wrap at another spot because it won't feel right in the grip. I'll post another underside of the handle wrap finished.

David, I hold the bow in the middle of the handle and spray one limb at a time, letting it set on a 1 inch wooden block where my fingers were to dry, might get a little smudge at that point but in will never show, handle covers it up:)

I was sort of curious. I was looking at your nocks and they seem to be a bit on the bulky side. Do you make them like that for a purpose, such as insurance? Or perhaps it's for appearance? I have found that nocks can be reduced to quite small proportions and still maintain a margin of safety. I also have found that small nocks are a source of performance with less handshock thrown in.

Post by: horseapple on February 03, 2004, 08:25:00 AM: Bulky? they might be, 1/2" wide, but I've seen my share of thin narrow tips blow up, I've learned that on a hunting bow its more safe to have tips a little wider,specially when using fastflight strings... being that the curve is smaller than most 4" helps in less non bending material lightning up the tip in the long run... good question tho and I'm not trying to be defensive but when your building them for a customer its better to have them made for the long haul :bigsmyl:

Post by: horseapple on February 03, 2004, 08:34:00 PM: Dan, I used Fullerplast for a number of years, got to the point where it was over priced and had added haz-mat charges to ship it. I use a Sherwin Williams finish called Sher-Wood Water White Conversion Varnish, uses the same technique as fullerplast but is thinner out of the can and takes way less catalyst, the 2-quart catalyst will probably last enough for 10 gallons of finish... most Sherwin Williams stores can get it... cost was $23 for finish and $25 for the catalyst, it needs no thinning. Works great over the oily tropical woods.

Post by: horseapple on February 03, 2004, 09:48:00 PM: Timo, the only other thing I've tried is different colors, I did stain a BBO belly and all like the fiddleback pattern, turned out different, darker but could still see some of the stripes in it.

Flintim, the dye that I use is mixed with warm water, haven't tried alchohol but I would think it would work, might penetrate better to.

Dina, what a ride, all thats left is inking the bow then spray finishing it.

This is the best build along I've seen even in the books.

One question, you kinda skipped over the prep work before finishing. What was the technique and paper progression used on sanding the bamboo to get that "never a tool mark" finish?

Also are you spraying the varnish or wiping?

Post by: horseapple on February 04, 2004, 08:48:00 AM: Heck Mike you know how to finish bows :) After I've scraped the rind off I sand with 80 grit paper to 150 and finish with 220, then I steel wool the bamboo hard, just the bamboo, after that I rub the bow down with acetone to remove any steel wool fibers which the acetone will melt and also it will dry the oily woods some, caution when cleaning woods like paduak and darker colored red woods that bleed the acetone will actually harm the appereance of your osage, letting the dark exotic woods to bleed into the osage, I clean the bleedy wood bows up with mineral spirits:)

I use the mineral spirits to bring out the look of what the bow we look like when I put the finish on... nothing but a look see into what and how the finish will turn out to be... it dries in a few minutes so it doesn't add moisture...
