I've Been meaning to start a static build along but never have had time, theres been some good build alongs showing how to make the selfbow recurve but none for the bamboo backed static recurve... I have a few statics to build so I said heck why not, I've always enjoyed Ferrets and John Scifres build alongs... Ok what I have is a homepage with msn so bare with me:) heres the link to follow the progress of building the bamboo backed static recurve... hope you guys enjoy it. I'll be adding pictures as I go so be patient... Also feel free to ask any questions.

Ahh, good stuff. Cool apples. :)
=keith=
-
CRAP!! this sever at work has all msn sites blocked. Guess i'll have to check it at home.
Chad
-
awesome Jd!
I notice you add a piece between the stock and the backing. Is this a piece to transition between bending and non bendin to keep the handles from popping off? If not what purpose does it server?
Thanks
-
JD-
I notice that you've got more than one caul going at a time, I assume on different bows. Is there any specific reason to glue the billets together before you recurve them?
Chadwick
-
Most excellent J.D.! Glad your doing this as I've always wanted to,Nothing to hold me back now!
Keep them coming!
P.S. Now about the BUll elk hanging out in the shop? Why?
-
Very cool JD......I'm with Timo....That Bull would be in my living room... :D ....Terry
-
Hey if my wife would let me my whole living room would look like that. Not just the Bull. Tools and all. LOL She thinks its bad enough that I have taken over her parking spot in the garage.
JD,
10-20 hours in the form clampd up seems like a long time. But I've only done one static. We steamed it and bent it and held it for 10-5 min. Alot of the curve relaxed. Seems your way works pretty good. I will have to try it one day when I build another recurve.
-
Now yer talking!!! I have been hesitant to start the BBO Sparky sent me for fear of messing it up! and i didnt want to bother you or Mike until after the season was over and you were back to building!!!
Thanks JD!!!
-
and I just happen to have some osage slats and bamboo that Dianne got me for Christmas last year :D ...timing couldn't have been better JD! Really excellent work on explaining things. :bigsmyl:
as McDonalds likes to say in their commercials..."I'm lovin' it"!
-
lilhunter, dang your getting ahead of me:) what your seeing is an 18" 3/16" center lam, its put in to keep the handle area from bending, my slats are 7/16" - 1/2" when glue up and I feel like that area needs additional beefing up.
There reason the Bulls in the shop is that I don't have ceilings bid enough to have it in the house... believe me I've tried:)
JD
-
That makes sense... :D ..Terry
-
Way cool J.D.! This will help with that "What am I gonna do with that 4th set of slats" problem I got.
-Tom
p.s. I know where to get the garrolite and when you add it on, but I forgot how thick it was and if you used Urac for it.
-
Appreciate all you guys who do the build-alongs
-
Is it my birthday or sumpin? this is fantastic JD!
-
Thanks guys for all the input... I plan on working the bamboo backing down after work today, so the pictures will be posted later tonight.
JD
-
Dang Tom, forgot to answer your question on the garolite... I got the piece from Greg Coffey, you can order it in .125 thickness which is 1/8" and 36x1.5 inch strips... I was out of ea-40 smooth-on so I used industrial strength thick super glue.
JD
-
Great "build-a-long" JD, I'll be watching and learning. Thanks.
-
Great build along JD! You just doin' this to keep us Oklahoma Newbies from comin' down to your shop and askin the same questions over and over again??? IT AIN'T GONNA WORK!
In fact....I'm supposed to go down to Ada to look at a drilling rig sometime soon. Thought I might stop by??
-
great build a long JD, we did good work. come on you have got to give me credit for something. i see my foot in the picture. ha ha
looks good anyways, good work.
-
JD... you are my hero :) This will be my very next project... thanks a bunch.
Bob
-
JD,
It looks like the slat is tapered in the last few inchs where you bend it. Is that just an optical illusion caused by the aluminum banding?
Also, I assume you just need a piece of banding about 12" long, that is a yard stick cut into 3 pieces. The backing and clamp must try to "walk" up the slat as you bend. Do you clamp it way tight or just let it slip a little?
Great build along and good timing too. Thanks.
-
David... I think I mention on one of the pic's about the strap being a yard stick cut in 3 pieces:) also mentioned the reason for clamping the strap before you make the bend, but I didn't mention how thick the bend area is thanks bud:) I taper the last 8" to around 3/8"... Just got in from work... gonna relax abit and head to the shop to look at some bamboo.
JD
-
JD, That's some really good stuff! All those little tidbits (like boiling w/ the strap on, clamping the strap prior to the bend, and heat torching, etc.) are the things that make a project work versus fail. Thanks alot for posting. :D
-
added some pictures detailing how I draw shape and flatten the bamboo before recurving it.
JD

It's also nice to see different methods folks use during building, like tapering the Boo on a power sander vs. planing. I'm just starting my 1st BBO and even though it's not a static recurve, I'm hoping to gain a lot of valuble info. and watchouts from your postings/pics. Thanks for the build along!
S&S
-
Stick & String your right theres all kinds of ways and technics when building a simple lam bow, everything about my statics including the glue-up form mirrors my Phenom r/d flatbow all thats different is the static tips.
JD
-
Very well done J.D. I'm watching in earnest!
-
Way cool JD! You got my fever up so I finally went to the shop and roughed out the billets for my takedown. Just had to make some yeller dust. I see the three apprentices from Norman aren't around. Bet you can get a lot more accomplished that way. I've got a little story for you. Ralph :knothead:

Chris why the frowny face after my quote?
That statement was made as a compliment to the generosity and expertise of a man who makes awesome bows,is a true expert at it (in my opinion one of the top 3 wood bow builders in the country), and could make a living from doing it. (as opposed to a wood hack like myself)
-
Couldn't agree with ya more Mickey.... this is a special treat and I'm eating it up...... :D .. Terry
-
Man JD you make that Bandsaw work look easy...Very nice..... Terry
-
Ferret, if you're a hack, I'd hate to see where I fall in line  Guys like JD Jones , Dean, Rusty, yourself and the rest are what make guys like me want to build bows.
Guys, I did have a frown after the quote, definately a thumbs up though, bad day and I read his quote wrong.
JD, I can't wait to see how this bow finishes.
Chris
-
"ok heres a recurve thats been took off the form"
I like how J.D. types. You can hear his Oklahoma drawl.
-
J.D.,
Dang now ya got me wanting to build a dang static and I don't even like recurves. :bigsmyl:
Nice tip on the use of dry heat while the wood is on the cull. I'll try that on the selfbows that I straighten on a cull.
I sure would like to come up one of these weekends and learn a thing or two.
Now get to work and finish this thing.
Mike
-
JD...Wow!, and thanks.
How come it all comes together without a hitch when you do it? :)
geo
-
That's odd Tom......I couln't tell nothin' strange 'bout his typin'. Sounds like perfic anglish ta me.
-
I can't believe I spent all that time rasping my bamboo down to near thickness, when I had the bandsaw sitting there. That alone was worth the time reading this thread. And I like the additional heating of the bent area, I do this a lot of times when I have a piece of wood on a form. Although, I think I've actually got some stuff too dry from being overly zealous about heat treating. Too dry resulting in that popping sound you hear just before your bow becomes a volunteer takedown.
-
Lennie... just be carefull when using the bandsaw for reducing the boo, might not have any boo left on one side:) Also when I add dry heat to the bending area I'm realy just heating the metal strap which helps from not scorching the osage.
JD
-
As long as my fingers are the same length when I'm through, I consider my badnsawing effort to be successful. Grass grows fast, fingers don't.
-
JD, what size/type of bandsaw do you use? Is there a size you would suggest for cutting osage and other hard woods? I'll be looking for a used one down the road and need suggestions on hp ratings, size(12",14"), and manufacturer. Anyone heard of a Cummings Industrial Tool Band Saw? They send me a flyer this week and had a new 14", 3/4hp on sale for $229. Is this a good deal or piece of crapola?
S&S
-
S&S My bandsaw is an older type 12" craftsman, I've had it about 9yrs... it has a 1.8horse motor which is plenty enough to cut osage up to 4" thick, its been a workhorse for me but I know its limits, having a 3-T.P.I. blade is mainly what I use.... the cummings that you tal;k about is one of the taiwany made type, about the same as the Harbor Freight crap, stay away form them... If I was in the market to get another it would be a 14" delta, jet or grizzly, lots have been said about these three, even tho none are american made.
JD
-
S&S I don't hesitate to buy Grizzly power tools. They're great people and their stuff is made to tighter tolerances. They have a 3/4 horse 14" saw for $320 and a 1hp 14" for $375. The 3/4 horse will serve you well for your purposes for years to come. It's the same saw they've been using at MoJam for 3 years. Someone finally managed to break a shaft on it last year but I'm sure a LOT of proper sawing practices were being violated to cause the failure. I'm surprized it went THAT long before breaking.
-
S&S, it all depends on how much you want to spend on your bandsaw. Like J.D. said it is important to use the right blade for the job and make sure your saw is tuned properly. The big four mfg are Delta, Jet, Grizzly, and Powermatic. Delta does have one bandsaw being made in the U.S. That is their X5 series 14 inch, cost is $900. In my opinion the best 14" being made today is the powermatic: 1.5 horsepower, Carter bandsaw guides, 4" dusport, and a quick release blade tension release. Any of the above mentioned bandsaw have good warranties, Jet, Delta, and Powrmatic also have service centers in most big cities if anything goes wrong.

-
Just a little Okie hint,... JD will give personal, one-on-one instruction for building this for a small bribe.
Who would have thought that a Master boyer could be bribed with something as simple as a plate full of chocolate chip cookies and a TALL glass of premium lager!
Sorry to let the cat out of the bag, JD. :bigsmyl:
Terry (in NY temporarily)
-
Dang Terry your aways from home:) Just finished heat bending the recurves in the bamboo backing, I hope to do a glue-up tommorrow with plenty of pictures... hello Sal mojamin this yr.?
JD

-
Yes, JD why wouldn't I? I always have a blast. Maybe this year I'll actually bring a bow.
-
Very nice JD. I also have thinned Bamboo with a Bandsaw, it's tricky. Do you have any problems with tip alignment and string tracking?
-
JD,
what is the lining on the bending jig made of? And what is the radius of the bend?
Thanks,
Mike
-
Yep, JD, I'm here until the middle of Feb. When I get back, we're hoping to have another session with ya! Mike and I are planning on bringing Lance P. down to learn to do the BBO thing. He has a starter that Sparky sent him, and ifn he doesn't screw it up like I did my first, then maybe we can show him how to do it right.
JohnBow's also got one to finish, and we (Mike and I) are ready to start another one.
Ralph really likes the one that we built for him. Named it "Woo-Woo". I'll let him explain that.
Later,
Terry
-
Mike, the bend is just past 90* what your seeing covering the form is another strap of aluminium... its screwed to the bottom and hammered to the shape, which mostly I bent with my hands, I then screwed it to the cut out opening... what I found out is that the wooden form was leaving marks on my selfbow statics when clamped tite while wet, even tho it was smooth the grain would impregnate on to the back of the stave... by adding the smooth strap all was fixed:)
Lance, Mike answered the question very good, altho I hardly never sand the nodes down flat, heard to many stories about splinters lifting
-
Mr. H. Apple,
Great idea on the static build along! Commendable that you're taking the time to share your wisdom.
It would be OK if you took a few days off work next week to keep the pictures coming. :)
J Sturtevant
-
Nice work JD. Keep em coming.
Gregg
-
Dang, I gotta have a form with recurves in it for the glue up?
-
easy Sturdevant, if I take off much more days I'll not be able to harass you Iowa boys at mojam... heres the steps on how I go about getting everything glued up...doing a build along is time consuming, I appreciate the nice words here on the tradgang... I posted this on the *********** and it got lost without any replies.. quess where my home page is set or not set:)
JD

I'm not clear on the shape of the center lam JD. Is it like a simple triangle or do you leave a flat under the handle or is it like a diamond? I assume you leave the peak of the triangle to the back side.
Real find build along bud. Real fine. You do a great service. I love that trick to leave the end posts out until you get the centers set. Simple, effective, clever.
-
Very cool job! I like the center lam stuff the best and the end post thing will make things much easier on the next BBO. I might just give the recurve thing a shot soon. Now show us the tillering process and I will be REAL happy. Seems like there will not be much working limb on one of these rascals.
B
Thanks!
-
JD, very well done sir!
My questions is, were do you set the end block? Do you have a mark on the side of the bow? Or is that one of those,"Oh about so far" things? :D
-
David, the 18" center lam is nothing but a filler for thickening the handle area... it can be any wood with my measurements being 1.5"X18" and 1/4" thick all I do is taper from the center to the ends that way when its all said and done it will be feathered at the ends and around 3/16" at the center... clear as mud...
Brian your right not much limb movement on these bows, makes for a really fast shooter... gonna take it out of the hotbox around 7pm it'll be one ugly sucker:)
JD
-
woops sorry Tim we crossed in cyberspace... your right there is no mark but I like to get the post just forward of the sharpest bend in the recurve... you don't want it on the straight part of the limb or you'll get a flat spot instead of a slight curve just at the static
JD
-
I hope we archive this one !! Darn it JD, just when I thought I would take a break from bowmaking you come up with this ! You're killing me , son ! :D
Just happens I know this feller with some osage slats, purpleheart, paudak, etc.LOL.
On the Urac, what's the open time on that stuff ? Plenty of time for clamping ? Also, would Resourcinal work too ?
I found one of those alum yardsticks at work the other day, and the letterign was worn to the point where you couldn't read it. I knew it had a use somewhere.
You mention the slats are qtr sawn. Other cuts would work too ?
You da' man JD
-
This is great JD...thanks for taking the time to put it on here.
Mike
-
Hi J.D. I have been watching your build along..it is very interesting. Dina
-
Ok I'm plum tuckered out... got the handle glued on and letting it dry, I need a break:) I'll try and start the tillering in the next day or two... if you need a question asked and or just to shy you can e-mail me @ [email protected] I really enjoy this but its nerve racking:) below is page 5 of the link.
JD

-
Awesome JD! I ordered a #49 rasp....when it gets here ill be ready to go! I look forward to meeting you guys and getting your advice!
-
JD, great photos and info., can't wait to see you tiller that baby! When your all finished, maybe you would have time to give us some details on how to do that spiral type of handle wrap.
S&S
-
Dale, I'd be more than happy to post a skifed handle build along, would be much easier than this one:)
JD
-
Building bows is a lot easier than doing a build along eh JD? Setting up pics, making sure the pic tells the story, remembering to explain in enough detail, it takes like 3 times as long to build a bow when you are doing a build along!
... once one does a build along he REALLY appreciates when someone else does one.I appreciate you doing this one, that's for sure
-
"Oh that looks real nice" :D
-
JD, how's the bow coming. everything looks good and looks like your almost done. keep up the good work even though you are tuckered out. you get to rest at work this week.
-
Anybody know what the radius of the bending jig is ?
-
"Fixin to",and "buttered up"! LOL
Love the eloquent speech there J.D.! :bigsmyl:
-
Tim... not sure about the radius, but the angle is a tad past 90* The experience that I've had with Urac is that I can get about 6 months tops from first opening the can... clamping will depend on how warm you have your shop, if its around 80* you have about 20 minutes... 70* about 15 minutes if your shop is cooler than 70* you can bring the material thats going to be glue into your house to let them warm up then take back out and start the glue up... i always get my liquid part of the Urac to in house temp. Can answer your ? about resourcinal never used it... I've used clear, quarter and edge grain and see no difference in the finished bow, you just have to be more carefull on the quarter and edge the knots will go from side to side instead of belly to back... I glued up another recurve tonight but it was one of my working type curves.
JD
-
Beautiful work. I've always wanted to try a curve, still don't know if I'm up to it. :)
Chris
-
This is really great stuff. Thanks for sharing this JD. Now you got me wanting to build one of these.
-
JD....just now got finished here on the rig. See'n as it's almost 1:00am, I thought maybe I shouldn't come over. I'll be by to see ya soon though!
-
rocdoc...to bad for not showing up, could've had t-bones and baked potatoes:)
JD
-
One of the coolest build alongs yet. I love how ya get real precise with things like "seems to" and "hopefully"
Ever run into any problems using a handle piece made from multiple lams? - such as several 1/8" lams of osage and walnut? These would have been glued up into a billet ahead of time, of course.
-
can you say DOH?
also not in the picture is that I don't add the end post until I've clamped down both middle post.
Last glue up after clamping down one midlimb I struggled away precious minutes trying to fight the other midlimb down...wish I woulda thought of this tip earlier....slide the end posts in after.....DOH!
-
JD, you mention using the "Dean " pattern. A lot of us have used that pattern and have it already. One question though. Obviously this recurve will have a lot less working limb. Do you stretch the pattern some or make it wider some ? My pattern is just shy of 1 and 3/4 wide at the fades. (I'd rather take some off as opposed to putting some back on if you catch my drift )
Also would other backings work here, such as hickory ? Might be a crapshoot on that one , heh ?
I have a friend that brought back some baleen from AK. He wants me to try it on a bow. This might be a good one to try on once I've built a few.
-
Damn JD! I had tuna and crackers! If you'd told me that earlier, I woulda shut the rig down and come to Ada! ;-)
-
JD, you better quit missing work then. Hate to see to see you miss mojam, and we're hoping you bring your fart machine again. :)
Looking forward to watching you tiller the bow.
-
John, my sons fart machine was a hoot:) I forgot to mention and should've on the first page, that when you go to my website with the build along, under the view click on list view instead of grid view, it shows the printed caption at the side.
32* here with spitting snow.
-
Hi JD....how are the bows coming along? Dina
-
Dina, your up late, your bow is sleeping in the house right now, temp. outside is around 20* got to trace out the outline of the handle on the boo and then shape the flares, I like getting the handle smoothed into the limbs before I start the tillering.
Tom about the multi-lam handle, I've done a couple and they turned out looking fine, instead of a glued up chunk of lams I glued each 1/8" together all at once, they bent just fine with the belly curve, hardest part was keeping all of em' from slipping while clamping them:)
JD
-
I was up late...I worked late teaching and it took me a lil while to unwind.
I keep checking for new pics. :)
-
Wow! Now this is a good build along!
Talk about pictures being worth a thousand words. There's an entire how to book's worth of info condensed to a couple pages here and amazingly it's all pretty self explanatory. Sure makes me wish I had about a grand to spend on power tools and a place to put them. Really looking forward to the rest of the process. You gonna show all the details of the finish work J.D.? Like how to make them fancy overlays and the skived leather for the handle.
By the way, where in OK are you? I'm flying back and forth between DFW and Kansas City every week and might end up driving sometime soon. Gonna have to bring the truck back up to MO to reregister it. Are you anywhere near I 35? It'd be kinda fun to stop by if ya didn't mind.
-
Dina... should have some updated pic's as soon as tommorrow night, worked on 3 English longbows tonight low 20's but I had the stove blaring, just made sure I was about a foot away to keep warm:)
Dave, heck yeah I'm in it for the long haul now, got to show every little detail, its kindof hard when your not used to taking pic;s and writting down details, real easy to skip something and say hey, I better take a picture of this:) Your more than welcome to stop in and visit as is anybody else thats ever around Southern OK. check your map I'm about 30 miles east of I-35 in Ada,OK you can't miss the turn off, its at Pauls Valley, OK theres a sign saying E.C.U which is the colledge here in Ada... East Central University... give me a call next time your close.
JD
-
JD, I've really enjoyed your build along. Have learned some new things. So, when will the video be coming out.8^) Steve
-
JD when is a good time for ya? I dont wanna get in the way but would love to see how it is done and i can bring along the BBO stave Sparky made me!
and Dina you lucky woman! I hope ya like the new bow!!!
-
hey horseapple.....hows the bow coming along.
-
Well guys, I had a helper tonight named rocdoc... he'll be the person taking all the pic's... I'm in the process of adding them to the site, just around 50 of em:) might be up late, but I can tell you its looking pretty sharp, I hope Dina likes it... I'll post the updated page when its ready... dang I'm tired, musta uhstrung the sucker 100 times
JD
-
JD,
what did you feed rocdoc, steak and potatoes.or did you feed him tuna and crackers. did yall get the bow done, ha ha.
Bryan
-
JD...I am sure I will love it!!!!!!!! Can't wait to see the pics!
-
rocdoc ate before he got here... KFC for me, I really appreciated him coming down and visiting, I put him to work. Haven't finished the tiller yet, 45#@22" three more inches to go:)I ran out of space on the msn webpage thats seems weird because ferret has hundreds of pictures any clue why guys... I also downsized each one before attaching them... says I can buy more space... help
JD
-
Dina.....I think you're gonna be well pleased with the bow. I got JD straightened out on the tiller and it's coming along nicely ;-)
I think I'm gonna bring my sleeping bag next time JD....I could camp out there for 3 or 4 days and have you straightened out by the time I left.
All kiddin' aside....thanks for taking the time to show me a few things....wish I coulda stayed longer!
JD MAKES SOME BEAUTIFUL BOWS!!!!
-
wow thats looking nice jd. you make it look easy! :D
-
Just HAD to show the BOOTS didn't ya JD!!!
-
I was gonna comment rocdoc but don't knoe you well enough :)
-
Doug, you knew I would rednecks wear redwings:) ok 109 pictures, heres the link starting at where I left off page 7

horseapple......Great job  You are definitely an artist (pronounced "ar-teest") :D Can't wait to see how it turns out.
-
Very nice again J.D.! Pretty groovy set of pics there! :D
Thanks for the lessons!
-
This installment was great!! Thanks J.D.
-
JD,
This is superb! Pictures are worth a thousand words, and your pics are great. Keep up the good work.
Gregg
-
J.D. I kinda get the picture but I had heard at one time that you should leave the tips a bit wide at first and narrow them later. Maybe that was on a recurved selfbow, I can't remember. You got any guidelines like that?
-
JD,
Great post and pictures but you sure kept me up late last night ;) Thanks a bunch
-
SWEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetttttttttttt!
-
Ya could be a redneck if.....yur dancin' boots an yur church boots both say redwing on the little tag. ;-)
-
Nice job JD. How are you gonna wrap the handle? You gonna do it online for us? You must eat up a lot of belt sander belts. You butcher deer with that thing too?
-
just got a break from my real job:) yes Tom my tips are 3/4" when I first bend them and after I get the bow bending on the tillering string to about 5" brace height, then I narrow the tips to around 1/2"
John, yep I'm gonna show the process I go thru to get the leather handle wrap, also tip overlay work... hows the tiller look to you guys?
JD
-
Looks perty much dead nuts to me JD but what do I know. I'm like 700 and sumpin bows behind you. That right fade catches my eye for some reason. Picture is just too poor to make any sense of it. Maybe a shadow or something. How about a daylight full draw once she's all smoothed off and gussied up.
http://home.midsouth.rr.com/ddmims/gt.jpg
-
David, you might be right, need to check it out... also the pic's are decieving not as pronounced as in real life... had to add a flash to make it show up.
JD
-
JD, Iam going to print this out and save!
You have wrote a entire book :D Thanks for taking the time to do all this, I know its alot of extra work.
Looking foward to that fancy handle wrap.
Dan
-
i heard horseapple is staying up late at night working on this build along. he put a tent in his shop and thats were he is sleeping. i hope he don't freeze to death its getting cold in ok at night. just kidding. he is doing a great job!! keep up the good work. cant wait until more pics
-
Thanks for the look inside your head  !
-
Sure make it look easy JD. You only had to put it on the tiller tree a few times, and I have a path worn an inch deep in the concrete between my bench and the tree.
Humbling. :)
Also... You only use a rasp, scraper and a knee? If my wife saw that she'd wonder why I really need all these tools.
Nice Job!
-
Joe Don,
I'm proud that you used wart as part of your presentation. Enough lessons, just send me one. And one for the boys too.
-
John....don't let the pics fool ya. He wore me out walkin' back and forth to his tiller tree!!!
The man has a keen eye for tillerin though. I had to lie a few times and tell him that I could see the problem spots too. I didn't want to look like a fool (which is why I asked him not to post the pic of me in my boots!!!)
-
hey rocdoc what is wrong with your boots. i think horseapple has not ever seen a real working mans boots. oil feild is serious work.....
-
I must say you're doing a heck of a job on posting and noting JD. A superb pictorial!

Thanks farmerboy.....I don't think it's the boots so much as the way my pants are tucked into them :-) Hey, it's muddy at the rig!
Gotta have those steel toes working on the rig....even my houseshoes are steel toed.
-
J.D.
Looks like you have come a long way since I stopped teaching you a few years ago. I hope to get up there tommorow, and give you some pointers. The bow looks great !!!!!!
Love,
your long lost pupil.....
-
rocdoc, i think the pants in the boots are cool thing, i were mine like that sometimes. as you can tell by my name i was raised on a farm.......one thing about oil feild it is always a mess, i know i worked on a rig for two summers. hard work!!!!!!!!!!
-
Dadburnit Farmerboy, you spell worse than me:) I've wore out more steel toes than you've had shoes:) I pan on scraping the rind off the boo this weekend and adding the tip overlays... that is if it gets above freezing:)
JD
-
Todd by the sound of you adding weight I might not recognize you :D
-
MUSCLE WEIGHS MORE THAN FAT !!!!!!!
BY THE WAY DID'NT YOU TURN 40 IN NOVEMBER ????
-
we'll talk about this tommorrow:) and yes you look very nice at a measly 212# :bigsmyl:
-
I forgot how sensitive toy are. For those of you who have never seen him he is very handsome and athletic. My wife thinks he looks just like Sam Elliot. I look foward to tommorow it's been along time!!!!
-
Man....I'd give anything to ONLY weigh 212# again!
Sam Elliot!!!!
-
JD, not only can you make bows but you put together a fantastic tutorial. Man, think of all the aw $@#%s, 'nother peice of wood please, start overs, etc you've minimized for folks like me by putting this together. Thanks so much.
Are you going to show some of the handle wrap stuff? I appreciate you sharing how you do it last summer in Fort Worth, I'd like to see some pictures if possible, beg, grovel, please ,etc :D
Charlie - SA
-
dadburnit horseapple you talk about my spelling. you PAN on working on bows today. what the crapt is PAN oh well have fun and don't freeze in your shop. if you can't get that fire started let me know i will have to come over and start it and keep it going so yall can work on bows today. good luck!!!!!!!!!!
-
JD....did you take the weekend off, or did you and Todd down a few cold ones and impair your ability to use the computer?
I'll be patiently waiting for the continued education.
-
The computer would'nt have been much of a problem. I was worried about the bandsaw !!!!!
-
Didn't even think about the power tools Todd! Maybe JD's wife should've unplugged them all and installed those childproof plugs in the outlets;-)
-
I was just kidding. We were'nt able to get together last night. Being new to this site I would'nt want everyone thinking I'm some kind of bad enfluence on Joe Don. You know that old saying about a " First impression being a last impression"....
-
Alright guys, got the bow coming round pretty good, all that needs being done to finish is the staining, inking and gluing on the handle wrap... its been pretty fun but is quite the chore having to remember to take pictures at each process:) link is for page 10 to the end
JD
http://groups.msn.com/Horseappleswebpage/bamboobackedstaticrecurve.msnw?Page=10
-
You ruined the suprise about the bow being for Christy !!! Guess I'll have to leave the weight where its at and keep this one for me. Man I hate to have another bow for myself !!!!!! Oh well, she'll probably never use it. Just like the new Ruger pistol I got HER for christmas last year...
-
And the crowd goes wild!!!! Very well done J.D.! Especially liked the overlay segment!
-
really good stuff
Rusty
-
great job JD.... the bow looks awesome. hard work has payed off, now you can rest.
-
Wow JD! This is some awsome information....I really think that you could publish this in a book form and sell it! You gotta admit it's much better instruction than you can get from most books; and by doing a static, the readers can make inferences for other types of bows.
I do hope you'll include some finishing tips....that way we'll all be able to make bows just as good as JD! YEAH....RIGHT!
Why didn't you make Todd tuck his pants in his boots for the pic?
-
Looks really good, JD. How much tip backset did she keep?
-
Nice J.D., thanks.
-
Marc, it's holding 2.5" when relaxed
JD
-
I like that tip overlay. That and the arrow rest shaping really make a difference. Thanks.
Keep 'em coming.
Do you hang the bow to shoot clear, or wide on or what?
-
JD
About the leather, do You skive both edges of the strip? What grit sand paper do you use.
Man I love those overlays. I promise I won't copy em. LOL
Mike
-
It’s cool to watch a master at work. In my little world I calculated you have about 35 hours in that bow. No wonder a bow cost so much. @ 18.00 dollars per hour (average craft-mans wage) that’s $630 not counting materials and tool maintenance. Thanks for the look in to your world.
-
Mike, yes you taper both edges and if you've done the job right the leather strip will have a crown in the middle of the side that your sanding... I use contact cement on all surfaces and start my glueing at the rest area... do a test run like I show in the last picture, glueing your wrap at a certain spot will tell you how it will feel when you grip your bow, I like my left pointing finger to be in a groove in front... kindof like having 4 finger grooves... you can tell if you need to start your wrap at another spot because it won't feel right in the grip. I'll post another underside of the handle wrap finished.
Jerry, thanks for the kind words, I've kindof speeded the process on this bow hopefuylly without harming the results:) just kidding Dina...
JD
-
Sorry Mike... 36 grit paper:)
JD
-
Rocdoc,
I thought about tucking my pants in my boots as an ode to you. But that is a look that is best reserved for Oilfield hands & 60 year old farmers. Besides they are lace ups. :bigsmyl:
-
Hi JD...the bows look GREAT!! I knew ya were just teasing me!
-
Dina, I thought you'd like that:) just like staining and spraying on the finish.
David, I hold the bow in the middle of the handle and spray one limb at a time, letting it set on a 1 inch wooden block where my fingers were to dry, might get a little smudge at that point but in will never show, handle covers it up:)
JD
-
ttt for the ones like me who get lost:)

JD
I was sort of curious. I was looking at your nocks and they seem to be a bit on the bulky side. Do you make them like that for a purpose, such as insurance? Or perhaps it's for appearance? I have found that nocks can be reduced to quite small proportions and still maintain a margin of safety. I also have found that small nocks are a source of performance with less handshock thrown in.
-
This has been a great build along JD... Thanks.... Terry
-
Bulky? they might be, 1/2" wide, but I've seen my share of thin narrow tips blow up, I've learned that on a hunting bow its more safe to have tips a little wider, specially when using fastflight strings... being that the curve is smaller than most 4" helps in less non bending material lightning up the tip in the long run... good question tho and I'm not trying to be defensive but when your building them for a customer its better to have them made for the long haul :bigsmyl:
JD
-
Well maybe bulky wasn't quite the right word to use :) . That's why I said "insurance". I can't say I've ever had or seen a nock blow though and I've made them very small. Careless handling of the bow might do it though.
-
Joe Don,
I personally think you have some of the prettiest NOCKERS.... Oops I mean NOCKS that I have ever seen!!! But then again I have seen them in person!!!!
-
Ok Todd, you little cutie:) Marc... I went back and narrowed them some, thanks for the insight... I've added pages of my staining technique, which is really sophisticated:) hope ya'll like it.
JD
http://groups.msn.com/Horseappleswebpage/bamboobackedstaticrecurve.msnw?Page=14
-
JD, Thanks fo such a thorough "seminar".
Lots of good info here.
What do you use for a finish? I like Fullerplast,
I can spray multiple coats in a day and wrap the
handle in the evening :)
Dan
-
Dan, I used Fullerplast for a number of years, got to the point where it was over priced and had added haz-mat charges to ship it. I use a Sherwin Williams finish called Sher-Wood Water White Conversion Varnish, uses the same technique as fullerplast but is thinner out of the can and takes way less catalyst, the 2-quart catalyst will probably last enough for 10 gallons of finish... most Sherwin Williams stores can get it... cost was $23 for finish and $25 for the catalyst, it needs no thinning. Works great over the oily tropical woods.
JD
-
Great buildalong!!!! I still have no idea how you guys have the patience to do it. I sure don't.
Can't wait to see what is next :D
-
Love it, love it, love it!
JD,have you tried other patterns with this technique?
How does this work on plane osage?Hickory?
-
J.D..............Oh my gosh it beautiful...I can't wait to shoot her! Dina
-
Man JD this is just gettin cooler and cooler!! You are very talented
-
JD , you got a head on you like a house cat. Wingnut tried to tell me how you done the stain but now it makes more sense. What's the powder stain mixed with ?
You don't stain the belly wood normally ?
-
Timo, the only other thing I've tried is different colors, I did stain a BBO belly and all like the fiddleback pattern, turned out different, darker but could still see some of the stripes in it.
Flintim, the dye that I use is mixed with warm water, haven't tried alchohol but I would think it would work, might penetrate better to.
Dina, what a ride, all thats left is inking the bow then spray finishing it.
JD
-
OK I've decided after following this build along I can never again do another build along, lest people realize what a wood hack I really am...
Awesome JD, simply awesome!
JD best picture in the collection is the one of your daughter..she is a doll! You sure she's from Oklahoma?
-
"you sure she's from Oklahoma?"......Mickey, you've obviously never been on a good old Oklahoma hay ride with a cute little farmers daughter and a full moon in October.....Awe, the memories ;-)
Sorry JD; hope I didn't scare you with that....I've got 4 boys!
I thought I was going to be able to make a really nice bow.....seeing this I'm sure I'll be making some more trips to JD's house ;-)
How thick do you like your steaks JD???
-
JD I have 3 daughters. I always said that I would shoot the 1st boy that came hangin' around and hang him from the mailbox to warn off the others.I feared jail I guess so I never done it. Now that I look back on it--I'd be getting out of jail pretty soon.
-
Dang it J.D. just when I start feeling cocky that I can build a passable bow, you go ahead and show us all up.
This is the best build along I've seen even in the books.
One question, you kinda skipped over the prep work before finishing. What was the technique and paper progression used on sanding the bamboo to get that "never a tool mark" finish?
Also are you spraying the varnish or wiping?
Mike
-
Heck Mike you know how to finish bows :) After I've scraped the rind off I sand with 80 grit paper to 150 and finish with 220, then I steel wool the bamboo hard, just the bamboo, after that I rub the bow down with acetone to remove any steel wool fibers which the acetone will melt and also it will dry the oily woods some, caution when cleaning woods like paduak and darker colored red woods that bleed the acetone will actually harm the appereance of your osage, letting the dark exotic woods to bleed into the osage, I clean the bleedy wood bows up with mineral spirits:)
JD
-
forgot, thanks for the kind words about my Daughter Mickey, she's a keeper for sure hardly never has a bad day and is filled with joy... She was excited that her picture was on the web:)
Also have a 12yr son that loved mojam last yr. I've got to get him in the album to he's took quite a few pictures for me.
Off to work later guys
JD
-
another thumbsup for a great buildalong JD.Thanks for taking the time.
-
Mr. Jones, it's been fun watching this. Great job!
I'll be looking forward to a new one of these every week?
-
Great build-alond JD, learned alot, thanks for takeing the time to do such a good job.
-
WOW... :) thanks JD... you are my Hero.
"I added solvent over the finish to enhance the look.."??? what kind of 'solvent' did you add over the stain before adding the finish...?
Bob
-
Awesome, JD!!!
-
JD,
might have been covered but I did'nt see it,
is the bottom limb the same length as the top limb or shorter?
Thanks,
Dan
-
Heck Bob I don't remember the brand of the solvent:) I get it from wally-world...
KC, I make all my bows with even limb length, I think they balance in my hands better.
JD
-
JD,
Wow! What beautiful work!
It reminds me of a saying one of my past employers used to say to me. When I was in High School I worked at a butcher shop. He would say, "Darryl, I am a meat-cutter and you are a butcher"
JD you are a bowyer and I am a butcher. :)
-
what is the solvent for and how do you use it?
thanks,
Bob
-
I believe JD just wiped down the bow with solvent to bring out the highlights for the picture.
Mike
-
looks good. I need to come and visit some time so you can teach me one on one.

ttt for Ted!
-
probably a dumb question but what does ttt mean?? I'm new at this computer term thing. I'm also kinda slow!! ;)
-
Well Todd if you have to know what ttt means here you go.... toddtheturd :smileystooges: no really it means, to the top
JD

http://groups.msn.com/Horseappleswebpage/bamboobackedstaticrecurve.msnw
-
why can't you just love me, and accept my stupidity???
-
oh JD...what you said to Todd... :) feelin full of P and V as dad used to say.. ? LOL.
I'm still curious about what you use solvent for and how and why you use it...? I always have just used finish over the stain...
Bob
-
your right Bob that was uncalled for, would you please apologize to Todd for me:) Wingnut answered your? in an earlier post... I use the mineral spirits to bring out the look of what the bow we look like when I put the finish on... nothing but a look see into what and how the finish will turn out to be... it dries in a few minutes so it doesn't add moisture...
JD
-
Joe Don there are a few misspelled words in your last post!!! Better get that ENCYCLOPEDIA you keep next to the computer!!!!!!!!!!!! :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :p
-
maybe someone can post this as a picture, this is where I ended:) the form is a modification of Dean Torges, his might be a touch cleaner without all the glue boogers on the base:) web page (http://community.webshots.com/scripts/editPhotos.fcgi?action=showMyPhoto&albumID=115002086&photoID=116596822&security=cZhmKC)
JD
-
OK...now I understand...I'm always so careful not to get anything on a bow that I'm about to finish, that I wasn't sure what you were putting on yours...I'm kinda slow, but thanks for the explanation... :)
Couldn't see the pic in the last post...?
Bob
-
JD...you make fun of me for spelling bad i think you should listen to Todd O and use that book and spell correctly..oh i guess your doing good for typing with one finger.....
Bob is right.. I could not see that picture or what ever. try again.
i want to see that purdy thang...........

-
OK guys this is it...last segment is starts on page 15, what a job:) had pressure the whole time thinking that this bow was going to go like the other build alongs lately... it weathered the storm:) finished her today... if I failed to mention it earlier this bow is going to a fellow tradgang by the name of Dina Voutour aka countrygirl, I hope she will be pleased with it... also thanks for all the kind words that have been said, I appreciate them... maybe next we'll do a R/D Phenom:)
