Well this isn't the post I wanted to be writing for the final chapter for this bow but here goes......I got the bow sinewed the Elk antler nocks applied and the snakeskin backing on her....She was tillered to 60#@25" sweated in and about 25 arrows shot through her...... I took the tiller to 60#@27" figuring she would settle in between 55 and 60# when all was said and done.....First shot from 20 yards was a perfect heart shot....( I was going to name this bow La Corazon)..... The second shot wasn't as pretty the bow made a funny noise on release and when I loooked down I saw she had split along the wind check on the handle.....I thought that check was out of play.... Ahhhh this self bowery is a humbling master.....Sorry Timo this wasn't the fate the century stave deserved.....I'll have to come up with something else for the auction...... Terry

Dang Terry I feel your pain. Blood, sweat, and some times tears, what a hobby!!. You were on your way to a fine bow for a great cause.
You gotta build another!! :D
-
Terry - I think you can fix that. Looked like a fine bow. I think i wouuld fill it with urac and clamp it up, then after it's dry, flatten the handle thickness to that of the limbs, and glue on another handle. If it didn't violate the back, then it'll work. Buck up. Steve
-
Oh your kidding! Man that was such a nice looking bow. I'm with Steve though, remember the "It ain't broke till I say it's broke" attitude! You can always glue it, pin it,sinew wrap it and then do a corded handle soaked with glue. As a last resort reduce the weight to a 45#er so there's not so much strain on it.
-
That's a shame Terry. I'm with the other guys about fixing her.Just CA and sinew wrap it, and take her to the woods.
Seems I remember us talking about that wind check, prior to your building her?
-
I'll definitely try to salvage it this was one great shooting bow.... But it's not going to be what I would feel right putting up for auction.....We'll see how she turns out....Timo...Yep we did talk about that... :) I gave her my best shot and damned near pulled it off Thanks for your generosity it was a fun ride.. .... Terry
-
Being of the "it ain't broke till it's at least three pieces" persuasion; I'd echo the others, sinew and draw weight reduction. Cord wrap handle is a sound idea as well. That is a fine looking bow, with a great story, it's definitely worth a repair or three. Let us know how it works out.
-
Ok guys...."It ain't broke til I say it's broke!!"..... Here's where I'm at with the repair.....Terry
http://bowyersworkshop.com/auctionbow17.htm
-
Alright!!
-
Terry - that repair will work, but I hope you used urac - I wouldn't trust ca for that... when you get the handle on it, maybe use a couple lams of other wood for strength and beauty. Try to be sure that the handle lams sit higher than the dips some, so the stress doesn't lift it at the dip. Urac is amazing stuff... and this repair isn't all that different than a lam bow getting a handle...You'll get it! steve
-
When and where is the St. Jude auction? I have a bow that I want to donate.
Frank
-
Steve...I epoxied it same as I do for Billets with a wood dust filler....It's not failed me yet....I don't have Urac never done one of those fancy BBO critters you guys are getting so good at and I'm too frugal to put out the cash for Urac just to watch it go bad on the shelf... :) ...When you say let the handle lams sit higher than the dips do you mean leave a bit of a lip rather than feathering it into the limb??.......
Frank the auction was originally supposed to happen right around now.... Maybe Terry or Lance will poke in here and let us know the status of the Auction...... Terry
-
That's the spirit Terry. I think Steve is telling you not to let the glued on handle sit flat on the belly of the limb. Don't think that's gonna be a prob here. Looks like the glue line will be BELOW the belly of the limb.
Keep after it Terry!
-
Thanks Mickey.....One more question....How long do I make my glue on section.... the original handle was 4" with 1 1/2" fades for 7" of non working area..... do I keep it at 7"???.... Terry
-
Terry I make my glue on sections 10" or so but then cut my fade shape with a bandsaw so any excess is cut off. Better too long and have to do a little rasping than too short. I'd go 9" at least. In your case I'd shape the fade by hand and skip the bandsaw
-
Darn Mickey....I made a run over to Woodworkers source at lunch and picked up a couple of pieces out of their bin.....I hope I went long enough...Worse case... I get to take another visit over there tomorrow..... :D Terry
-
Ok I'm looking good on the length.... I have a 10" piece of Bubinga for my handle.....But now I have another challenge......My reflex on this bow was about 1 3/4" before the handle blew..... now that I have thinned out the handle area the sinew has flexed it's muscle and it's now reflexed 3 1/2"
Do I try to get the 10" hunk of Bubinga to match the radius through the handle section or do I clamp the bow to the Bubinga and make it fit that way?? Or is there another option I'm not seeing?? .... Terry
-
Is there any reason I couldn't just forget the glue on handle and sinew wrap the handle area real well..... Top that off with a rawhide wrap and then put a leather handle wrap over all of it??...... Terry
-
I'm not expert by any stretch of the imagination but I think it would be better to clamp to the shape of the bubinga.
-
I'm swimming in the deep water here myself Linc..I'm open to any and all suggestions... :help: Terry
-
Terry, I have no real experience here, but J.D. forms his handles to fit the reflex of the bow as I recall. Maybe contact him for better advice.
-
Terry, Your probly gonna feel it when you dump the string, with a sinew /rawhide wrap. Not a bad thing?
Forming the wood to the bow profile, will aid you in many ways. Reduce hand shock, help to retain reflex, and look just plan purty!
I've grown fond of small limb bows in the "C" design.Just plan snappy, and a get poster child for a self bow. Just got to sacrifice a little "bump" in the hand. (At least in my bows)!
-
Terry another option is to glue cork to the handle area and shape with a rasp, Get it in 1/4" sheets used to make gaskets at auto parts places. A 1/4" wrap around the handle area will be a big increase. After the cork, cover in leather.
-
Thanks Dano,Tim and Mickey I've definitely got some food for thought.....On one hand I already know how to work with sinew and rawhide very well, on the other I've got to learn how to do a glue up sometime maybe now is the time.....do you guys have any tricks or tips for mating two radiused surfaces together??.....Terry
-
Terry - sorry, computer was down for a couple days - Here's a good trick - put sandpaper on the surface of the handle lam, and work it into the area it's gonna be glued onto. then put the paper on the bow, and set the handle wood on it, ans work it back and forth. it'll mate the surfaces well. A cabinet maker taught me that... Steve
-
Well I worked today but got a little time to spend on the Auction bow this evening.....I have the Bubinga glue on handle section rough fitted to the bow and will get the surfaces perfectly mated and glued up hopefully tomorrow...Terry

-
Looking good, Terry. keeping the reflex there at the handle will go a long way to aiding the performance. I think the bow will get that asiatic reflex look coming off the handle. unique. Everyone will be wanting to try one... kinda like a "Petko curve"!!! You have it nailed now, all downhill from here! Steve
-
Steve...LOl... I don't know about adding the moniker but I like the idea of reflexing at the handle like this .... I may try to do one on purpose next time.... :D ..... I've got a question for you guys on tillering with these glue on handle sections....... do I still get my limbs bending a bit into the fades or stop it before the glue on section?..... Terry
-
Terry, if you did good on your glue joint it doesn't matter tiller in the same fashion, either way if the glue joint is no good it won't hold. How's that for a confidence builder? :D Looks like you did good on mateing the two, so it ought to hold just fine. JMHO
-
LOl... Thanks Dano.... Well I finished getting the surfaces mated completed tonight and the glue up done......Terry
http://www.bowyersworkshop.com/auctionbow19.htm
-
OK we have her off the glue up table and I've got the handle roughed out...... Glue lines don't look half bad ........Now I'm going to sinew wrap and top that with a rawhide wrap and retiller to 50-55#.......Terry
http://www.bowyersworkshop.com/auctionbow20.htm
-
Terry - I think it's overkill. If that glue line pops, I'm not sure sinew would hold it anyway. Sinew under a sweating palm might not be the best idea. I think it's pretty as it is now, Too. Just my thoughts. Good work, nice save... Steve
-
Terry that looks really nice. Good job my man!
-
Thanks Steve and Mickey I'm pleased with how she turned out......Now we'll put the rubber to the road and see what happens......Final Tillering ( for the 3rd time :) )Shoot in and if all goes well Finishing .......Terry
-
Dang Terry with all this advertisin going on I aint gonna be able to even get a bid in one this beauty!! Looking good!!
-
AZ,
I just got a chance to look at this. My heart sunk until I saw the fix. Looks good. That was a bummer of a problem. You did good. I sure hope she holds together. I have been so busy travelling for work and kids and all that I haven't touched a bow in 6 weeks. Gonna try to fix that tonight. Thanks for the thread.
John
-
Thanks Doug and John.......I have applied sinew wraps and a rawhide wrap over that to strengthen the handle section...... Here's where it's at... I will get the final tiller done after the rawhide has a chance to dry and tighten up... Terry
http://bowyersworkshop.com/auctionbow21.htm
-
Well.....Looks like the rawhide wrap has dried good enough to get this bow on the tillering tree again..... I'll get her going tonight..... Terry
-
Looks like the repair is going to hold...Here she is pulling 50#@27"......I got her tillered out and excercised 80 times on the tree I shot her a few times out back tonight and will shoot some more tomorrow.....I checked her after every 10 pulls on the tree and she's holding a solid 1/8" positive tiller......I should be close to 50# or slightly less@28" after sanding and shooting in..... Terry

Looks great Terry. Good job on saving it dude. And you were afraid it was a gonner HA!
-
Mickey It's pretty amazing what you can do with wood I never would have kept going except for all the encouragement I got here from you guys... I appreciate all the help from each and every one of ya.. ...This is a special bow for sure..... Terry
-
LOL..I guess the lesson here is "it ain't broke till "WE" say it's broke" ha ha
-
Dang Terry, the value just went up on that bow. A dinamite job on that handle wrap. Sweet full draw profile too.
-
Nice save, Terry. So now my question is, since the handle became reflexed after "the incident", and now the laminated handle helps hold the reflex, how much more reflex do the tips hold as compared to "pre - incident"? Steve
-
Thanks Dano..... :D
Steve.... She was at about 1 3/4" reflex before and now she's measuring 2 1/2" after sitting unbraced almost a half hour......Terry
-
Here's a full draw pic of "La Corazon" after sanding and fine tuning the tiller..... I've also included a pic of her braced..... Final weight 52#@28" right on target.... :D .... Terry

-
That's just dandy AZ...just dandy.
Thanks for offering up your talents.
-
My Pleasure Tarz.....And Thank you ,Lance and Rob for putting this Auction on.....It's really amazing to see that right now there's over $8,000 pledged and we're just half way through ......What a great group of people to be associated with...... Terry
-
Outstanding Terry, simply elegant!
-
Very nice Terry, love that braced profile.
-
Mickey and Dano......Thanks for hanging in on this build along.... It's been a long one.... Your help was invaluable....Terry
-
Wow Terry -that bow came out great! Been alot of work, but alot of learning, too. A great addition to the auction, with quite a story behind it for it's new owner, too. Good work. Steve
-
Thanks Steve.....About a year and a half ago when I finally got to where I could make a bow with some consistency and started looking at perfecting tiller I lifted pics of two bows and saved them to train my eye on what a perfect tiller looked like.... One of the pics was of a bow David Mims made and the other was one of yours....You've been a great source of info and encouragement Steve.... Thank you.....Timo if you're out there lurking thanks for sending me the stave this bow was made of..... That Century tree of yours sure did have a lot of magic in it and your generosity with the staves from it sets a high standard of selflessness for the rest of us......Terry
