I got a little tired of makeing the same old, same old bows. But this may be a little more of a challenge. I followed the grain the best I could, and still violated a few rings, but a little rawhide and lower wieght it should survive. What do ya'll think, wanna takes bets on when she blows? :scared: :D
Lower limb

upper limb maybe

-
yowsers that thing looks like it could slither away any minute now.....
-
man that looks like fun... :knothead: glad it's you and not me Dano.
Bob
-
Are you going to try and put a string on it, or paint eyeballs? hehehe!
-
Nice, Dano. Are those violations upper third of the limb up top?
Jawge
-
You got it Jawge. I kinda got carried away there.
-
Great looking stave, you're gonna have fun with that one. Looking forward to seeing at MoJAM. :-)
-
Here is what I think. You get a bow outta it. You got some sinew handy? or are ya just going for it!!!
-
Looks long enough, Dano, or is that just the camera work? If you got doubts, just rawhide it and I'll bet she's a shooter!
-
Well Calvin, I like Mark's advice, I'm going to put some rawhide on the back and go for it. It's a stave I cut last winter so I'm only out a little sweat. :D
Yep it's 64", that gives me 2-4 inches of goof space.
-
good luck brother!
-
dang fine looking piece of wood Dano. Got my fingers crossed and enjoying the show :bigsmyl:
-
Thanks Guy's.
Mickey what's going on with your snakey bow?
-
Piece of cake Dano.Strip of rawhide should do the trick. :wavey:
-
Where did I put that helmet.
If Dano can't do it it can't be done.
-
no, no...I think it will blow up if he rawhides it.
(I dont actually, but think it makes for more entertainment if someone bets against you)
-
I can always depend on you Calvin for the entertainment value.
Thanks Don, but I can break one once and a while
This baby goes on the long string tomorrow, we shall see.
-
It should do just fine Dano, just put a good piece of rawhide on it. One of these days (as soon as I as I can get a piece of snakey Osage) I will try one. I love those snakey ones, they look GREAT!
KenWood
-
Neat. Looks like fun. I'm betting on you Dan.
-
C'mon Dano......little heat gunning and she'll be straight as a string ;-)
That looks like about 2/3 rds of the staves I've got stacked in the corner of my shop.....that's why they're stacked ;-)
Seriously though, the snakey 'sage I finished a few weeks ago also had a couple of ring violations. I put some goat rawhide on it and it turned out pretty darned good. Just covered the rawhide with a pair of diamond backs and nobody will ever know I couldn't follow the rings.....well, nobody except the whole darn trad-gang community!
-
Dano, You are gonna learn a bunch from that piece of wood. Take your time and enjoy the journey. I envy you, but can't wait to see the finished bow. Pat
-
Ed, you gotta show us all pictures now :D
Thanks for the encouragement guy's.
-
Now THATS a piece of wood :bigsmyl:
She's gonna be a beauty Dano
-
Dano mine is down on the bow rack patiently waiting for me to find time to get back to it. Been busy with arrow work lately.
-
Dan,Dan, he's our man,If he can't do it?..... Well we will see? Ha,Ha Bud!
Looks like a gudin Dano? Skip the rawhide, and slap some of that "Crane magic" on her! :D
-
That's a great hunk of Sage Dano......Kinda funny but chasin rings was the most intimidating stage of bowbuilding for me when I started out now it's the part I enjoy the most.....Thanks for taking the time to share the build along...... Terry
-
Well with all this pressure you guy's put on me :knothead: :D I decided I had better back it before I put a string on her. So I cut the rawhide strips to size by tracing the back onto the hide, cut them and let them soak in water for a half hour. While the hide was soaking I sized the back with TB III and let that dry. Then applied the hide squeezing out any air as I wrapped with the ace bandage, making sure the hide was in it's proper position, you need about 4 hands while you do this. :D Now it's just a matter of waiting 24 hours for the glue to dry.

Looking good Dano!
Nice clean,"Ferret looking shop" ya got there! :p
-
I am on tenter hooks...
What's that bow that is sittin' next to The Mummy? Not a template for this one, is it?
Dano, if this one turns out as good as it looks, it will definitely be YOUR bow. One of a kind, full of character, unexpected twists, unbridled energy, and with a heart (only a little violated) of pure gold.
Killdeer~don't tell anybody I ever said anything nice about you~the momentarily insane!
-
Looks good Dano. You said you need to wait for the glue to dry. Does the TBIII soften up and then dry again to the wet rawhide or does soaking rawhide give it an adhesive quality?
By the way, pretty bow in the background. What's it made from?
Clint
-
I'm betting that she lives. Based on the ring violations that I could see, I'd rate the pucker factor at 5, on a scale of 1 to 10 ;-)
-
Oh, my bad....I see you already have the rawhide on it. She'll be fine.
-
Thanks Timo, a clean shop is a sign a sick mind, no wait :D Slow day, yeah that's it ;)
The bow in the back ground is a hickory stave I decrowned and backed with hickory, dang white wood :knothead:
Geeze thanks for the kind words Killie, I think :bigsmyl:
Clint, the moist hide helps the TB adhere and makes it more plyable.
-
Dano, I hate being the lone dissenting voice but it won't be the first time and Lord willing it won't be the last. The violation on the edge there looks like it really isn't one. Just looks like you left some wood on top. Edges rarely fail anyway. I'd be concerned about the violation in the middle. You don't want to hear this. LOL. I've had this happen many a time. I went back and chased the ring again and brought the back to 1 ring. I know. it will probably be ok. Osage is tough stuff...But....But... (Life is full of them.) I've always looked at backings as added insurance and not the exclusive reason a bow holds together. :)
Jawge
-
Dano. I've been waiting for 'Ed' to post a pic of his bow.....then I realized 'Ed' was ME! I come from a long line of Ed's, so I use my middle name and go by Doug.
I posted pics of this bow when I finished it a few weeks ago so you might recognize it. Don't want to contaminate this thread too much, so I'm just sending one picture without me in it ;-)
-
Hey that's a sweet lookin bow Doug, er Ed :D Kind of a challenge to keep the skin centered isn't it?
Yep Jawge, I like the insurance value too.
-
LOL Timo you will be happy to know that my shop is a stinking mess. but i hope to have it cleaned back up soon cause it's time to start making chips fly and I need ot be able to find my tools ha ha
Dano that is such a neat bow, I'm hoping she bends like a first quarter moon for ya.
Doug I really like that one. Ya done good son. How do you like shooting it?

Timo, I have seen it myself and it looks messy in that picture. :scared:
-
Don, The cleaning lady, says she don't do windows or shops, shhhhhh!!! here she comes :bigsmyl:
-
Dano, for some strange reason, Eva gets grouchy and nervous when I'm standin' ankel deep in yellar shavings and smokin a seegar....so I'm obliged to seep things swept up :knothead:
-
That bow is looking good son. She be a real looker
-
Dano.....it really wasn't that tough keeping the skin centered, but it you notice, the pattern on those skins isn't real symmetrical and I think if it was it might be more difficult.
Mickey, I love shooting it when everything's feeling good. It's a little heavy for me to shoot when my shoulder and back are mad at me ;-)
I think the shavings and dust in my shop are so deep you could actually do some carbon dating to tell the age of some of the layers of sawdust ;-)
-
George, just tell Eva your checkin the moisture content of the shaveings :D Course she's pretty smart, she may not beleive that one.
Doug, ya gotta sweep up at least once a year to find those lost tools.
-
dano,
that just looks like fun! an open invite to all "yella booger affecio-natos," we're gonna be makin gold dust next saturday here in manhattan. bring yer chain saws and wedges an let's have at it! mick, timmo etal, out of staters invited too.... :wavey: if ya wanna wait til real cuttin weather, JS is comin up in feb. and we're gonna harvest some more. i got my eye on some beuts!
dave
-
Sounds like a blast Dave, wish I could join ya's. It's a tuff time of year to get away. Pick some streight ones.
-
i got my "good-eye" on a few (20) so far, i still have to walk the other 1/2 of the fence row. :D the best part is, i can sit and look at it across the field from me! make sure no poachers get out there..... the stuffs only been there for about 50yrs, why would anyone bother it now? LOL if all goes according to plan, i'll be bringin some to mojam next time..
dave-gonnabesorerthanheckinaboutaweek-osbo
:help:
-
:bigsmyl: If it was easy osage would be extinct.
-
nick,
all of the above and give "alan cohol" a call too, see if he wants to come along. that always helps take away the ache......
one week and counting and i can't wait. got the binos out every morning now checkin it out...LOL i hope those look as good on the inside as they do on the outside!
-
oh yeah, see if "alan" has a BFH we can use too. that helps drive those wedges in a little easier....
-
Alan always brings his BFH don't he? :bigsmyl:
-
seems like every time i go anywhere with alan i feel like i got hit in the head with one....!
-
got a question for you sage scrapers. I've got a 29" draw.
How much draw wieght could you realisticly get from Osage? W/WO backing.
Of course depending on backing material.
Man, you fellas do some really cool stuff with wood.
Thanks
P.S. Sorry, I don't mean to steal your thread.
Hutch
-
Hutch, I think Rusty Craine Probably draws the heaviest bow made of osage I know without backing, and I think he's got a 28" draw. Osage is hell for stout.
http://stavestobows.homestead.com/Index.html
-
Dano, Rusty wa a true lightweight next to Ralph Borton. Ralph made and shot osage flat bows in the 100#-110# range. He has been to most of the Mojams but missed last year I think. One or two of Ralphs bows are on my awesome wooden bows site.In the last 10 pages or so if memory serves me.
-
Yep, I remember him and that bow everyone was trying to yank back. Just goes to show with the right design and workmanship about any wood can make a stout bow.
-
hutch,
you can't put me in with these MASTERS! and i do mean that. so far all i do is knock the trees down and split em up.... that's the easy part! :notworthy: it's amazing what these guys do with that wood.
dave
-
All I can say is wow! yous guys are great. really been thinkin alot about makin my own. Thoughts go back an forth with makin a laminated bow, then I'll see one ah them snakey sticks. I think I'm gonna order that book from Dean Torges. Been checkin out ferret's page, and Jawges page, lotsa great info, but havin a hard time seein what you guys are talkin about sometimes without a chunk of wood in my hand. Any way I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, And God Bless
Hutch.
-
We had a great day, thank you Hutch. I started with The Ferret's, Jawges and others advice, making board bows, then laminated, then selfbows from staves, they all have their merit and lessons to learn. I would still start with a board bow if I had it to over, they are the way to learn in my oppinion. We are here to help you, come on get after it :D
-
Mickey,
How did Ralph come back from his shoulder surgery? Haven't seen him in a few years now.
-
I started tillering this baby today, what an experience:knothead: It's starting to bend pretty well, all these humps and whop-de-does make it a little interesting to get a limb to bend nicely. It looks pretty good to me for the first go, so I thought I would quit for the night.
10" of draw with long string
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v199/dlgren/Archery/Bows/Snakeybow002.jpg)
-
dano,
i was just checkin our your tiller tree. i need to make one for the bow i'm workin on, my first.
does anything clamp the handle in there or does it just sit on it? do you mount that in a vice?
thanks,
dave
-
That's a good first Look Dano..... Keep it up.... Terry
-
Dave, I don't have any spare wall space so I clamp the tree to my workbench when I need it. The saddle of the tree is lined with leather, and I usually use a shim and a wedge to hold the bow.
-
gotcha, thanks.
-
Lookin' good Ole Buddy. It's going to be a purty bow when you put your magic to it.
You keep this up and I'll have to start makin shavins.LOL.(I too am in the hunting slump)
Been making a lot of chips but they're flint chips. :wavey:
Keep up the good work buddy.
-
Dano I'm sure you know this, but when you have humps and dips you have to imagine a line straight thru and ignore what's above and below that line.If you end up removing too much wood, i know a guy that shoots girlie weight bows and loves em snakey :bigsmyl:
Looking good so far.
Jeff I really can't say, but the last time I saw him he appeared fine. Like a guy named Strubberg that dissapeared one time, Ralph has been rather scarce of late.
-
Thanks Linc. Mickey, if this baby comes up light it's yours.
-
HeeHeeHeee!
Now I don't have ta spank him myself!
Girlie weight...whats that? :saywhat:
Killerdeer
-
Dano,   Love those snakey bows, super job.
-
There's a sound that everybody hates to hear when they draw a bow back  :scared: Yep, it went SNAP!!! she was tillered to 23" lookin pretty good, so I thought I'd take a picture and see where it needed work, oh well it happens. I took too much wood from one of the whoop-de-does I'd say. On to the next bow. :D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v199/dlgren/Archery/Bows/Snakeybow.jpg)
-
Darn, I was looking forward to more tillering pics. Looked like a wonderful piece of wood, but “win a few....bust a few”. If they all made great bows it wouldn’t be as much fun.
I hate the sound you referred to. Had a bone in my neck that started to “tick” every time I drew a bow, sounded exactly like a splinter popping. Drove me nuts until I figured it out.
-
Damn Dano... It was lookin like ya had her started out good too.....Terry
-
Dano,
In the pic it looks like the rowhide separated. Not enough detail to see if the wood cracked.
Sorry to here it didn't work out.
-
Jason, there's a splinter under the rawhide, I had thought about making a sinew wrap on it, but it's at midlimb. I think there would be way too much stress on it.
Dare I say the old master was right(Jawge) :notworthy:
-
Darn thing looked like a planned road in either SE Ohio or WV.Sorry it failed Dano....Mac~
-
Well, that ain't hardly fair, but certainly part of this game. That's was a tough one to tiller Dano that's for sure. I think just over 20" is where Perfect Snake #1 let go on me. Yep, they have you thinking "hey, I'm gonna pull this off, it's gonna be a bow after all" ....then tic. DA&^%$&^#$$&^$!
Sorry to hear that Dano :(
-
Dano,I would say to sinew wrap it and continue tillering the snakey critter. You can make a lighter weight bow with no trouble and send it to Mickey. :bigsmyl:
-
I remember that Mickey, that's what I was thinking after it went. Your up my friend, we look to you for a good build-a-long.
Linc, she's going to set in the corner for awhile, maybe I'll do that.
-
NEXT! :)
-
Bummer Dano!
Looks like you are gonna have to get on that piece I gave you at the jam? I'll almost garantee that one!
(one way of the other)! :D :D :D
-
Thanks Tim, I think I'll get out and hunt some, and think about the next one. :D
-
Sorry to hear that, Dano. Speaking as one who has broken many that sinking feeling disappears as you start the next one.
Jawge
-
Thanks George, I know your right.
-
Dano - you ain't the only one man. Not 10 minutes ago I found a large crack on my latest bow (#2). :( Good luck on the next one
-
Good luck to you too Luke, stay after it, you'll get a shooter yet.
-
Dang-It Dano! Sorry to see that happen,I just got to following this build-a-long. Hurry up and start another. It's too early in the season for me to start building bows yet so keep the build-a-longs going so I have something to read when I get in from hunt'n!
-
My condolences Dano!
You have an address for us to send flowers?
Heck Dano.....just think of it as your exercise regimine....who needs a bowflex when you got yeller wood to whitle on ;-)
-
Well!!! After a little super glue, two layers of sinew, and a few weeks to dry, I think I can save this bow. I've got it tillered to 18" and haven't heard a thing out of her. The tiller is pretty ugly but it goes along with the shape of the limbs. So, the drama continues :D

Hey Dano
Where did you get yer TB-III.
KenWood
-
Ken, Most of the hardware stores around here are starting to carry it. I like it.
-
I asked Home Depot and they looked at me like I lost it. I did but they don't know this!!! LOL
KenWood
-
You 'da man Dano!!!
I figured you'd let the ref get to the count of 7 and then jump up swingin'! :notworthy:
-
:bigsmyl: Doug, that ol' ref got to about 5 and I said "hold up!!!" Linc, was the man that said wrap it and get after it, he deserves the credit.
-
 Im headed out to sinew up a mesquite bow right now. Good to see she's still holding for you Dano. CK
-
Thanks CK, good luck on your mesquite bow, I'd like to see how it turns out.
-
:bigsmyl: I'm glad to see that you didn't give up.Looking good buddy. It's going to be a fine bow.It would have been a shame to give up on it.Like they say"It ain't over till it's over".Besides The Fat Lady Hasn't Sung Yet!!!!! :wavey:
-
Buddy, she ain't even warmin up yet :bigsmyl: Sometimes it's good to just set em in the corner and think on em for a bit. Thanks my friend.
-
Yea Linc, but she did clear her throat!lol
Nice going Dano! Like Mickey says," It ain't over until I say it's over"!
-
Tim, if anything this will make a great piece of kindlin for a camp fire :bigsmyl:
-
good luck Dano!
-
You're welcome my friend.Just keep at it and get it to start thinking your way.
Timo, if that's clearing her throat,WATCHOUT when she coughs.LOL :scared:
-
might pop a rib, hey Linc!!!
-
You got that right!
-
Linc, what're you doin' up this early? That piece of lemon merengue pie callin' at you from the fridge? :D
-
Sorry Killie, I didn't check back until now.Sorry to say that I'm up this early to go to work.Aarrgg! :(
-
Well Dano,
I guess that hunting trip/thought session did you some good huh? Glad to see you're back at it. What weight are you going for?...same as original?
Clint
-
Clint, I'm looking for 50# @ 24" my stubby little draw length. Yeah, letting this bow set awhile payed off, we shall see.
-
Good Job Dano...That tiller is lookin good... ...Terry
-
Thanks Terry, when tillering a bow thats this ugly it's hard to tell when the limbs bend evenly as you know, kinda fun tho.
