I got the E-mail, you want a 64" or 95" stave?
The 95" stave has a dogleg in the area where the handle would be, that if incorporated would automatically cant the bow. Let me know which you want or I'll send you one of each.

Sounds like the other bow will have a wood overlay most likely. This will probably have a leather wrap too but the leather helps round out the back and can be made long enough to show a bit at the top and bottom.

A bit of reflection on the last couple times I've been involved in similar efforts. I bet well over $200 in shipping was involved in MOJOEs I and II just getting it to various bowyers, artisans. I know I spent over $50 myself. Minimize that to the extent possible and funnel that $ away from the USPS and into St. Jude's. Just a thought.

As for minimizing shipping, things like making sure the packaging for all shipments is less than 84" length + girth, reducing weight at all times and thoughtful project management come to mind.

Just a little tip to make Johns' job a bit easier... When you take your pictures name them when you save them i.e. tiller1.jpg, tiller2.jpg etc. when you e-mail the pics reference the picture name and give a brief description of what you are showing.....
Dano I'll let Mickey, George and Timo make the call on fast flight...but with the tip overlays it should be no problem...

Cut off the bad stuff and was left with 59" exactly to work with. With some pin nocks we could get a 58" bow. With standard side nocks a 57 1/2" bow.

Here's the first major flaw, a big old punky knot right on the edge of the bending limb. Once I removed the rest of the sapwood in that spot it was really close to the back. It would never bend there and it might break there.

the other thing that revealed itself is a crack, not sure if it's from splitting, or drying or wind, but it's 6"-8" long, runs thru the stave at an angle and isn't gonna leave enough wood if remove (PS look close it starts out green where the end was painted...it's in the center of the stave from this side and it's not the black line which is the back edge of the bow to the left...)

Truthfully I don't want to waste any more time on this piece of wood.
I can substitute a piece of my stock if you want, just so Tuselton still gets credit for donating the stave. He could not have known about these deep unseen flaws and I don't want him to feel bad or go thru any more expense.

My 15 year old Craftsman looks like a toy next to that monster!
Too bad about that stave. It's a good thing we have the "A" team on this project. I would have found those flaws exploding on the tillering tree.

Give it to someone that wants it. I just got back from wingnut's shop. It looks like we are going to have to find someone else to donate a stave. Wingnut managed to cut 2 billets out of one stave and they are still wet. I have 2 more staves out there but the odds are, they are going to be billets too. As for billets, I just spent a large part of the lunch time (okay, and a bit more than that) looking up splicing, etc. Timely thing to do - even Rusty posted that some of the best bows are from billets, since it's easier to find good wood 36" long than it is to find a good full length stave. A good bowyer, and a good "modified fishtail splice," and you may just have a better bow than a full length stave could ever produce. Plus, a lot easier to induce reflex or deflex that way.
Ya done good, friend. I know that you're feeling bad about it, but it makes me and I'm sure most if not all of us ache for ya. Anyone that would have donated any wood, it could have been the same exact thing. Just remember - think what you'd say to someone else. And then, take it to heart. Okay? Besides, that stave is destined to be something else....

Actually, I've still got two saplings that keep sprouting in the spring, so perhaps there's hope that I'll find a winter hardy osage for Zone 3!
Also, Chris R sent me an osage board and a bamboo backing, and Mike Byrg sent an osage stave. There's osage around here, after all!!

A quick look over tells me this is a heck of a piece of sage, won't know for sure until I get the bark and sapwood off. Should be easy to get into 1 ring too. Quick count on the rings shows 8 to the inch. Doesn't get any better than that IMO.

Ok Bro Randy came over and confered with me on the stave. We can't tell how deep the dry check on the one end goes(it may only be thru one ring) but we decided to layout the bow on the entire stave as we can always shorten it later
I got to tell you the floppy "Bowyer's Rule" is one of the best things I have ever come up with. Makes layout SOOOO easy.
Here you can see the handle box laid out..handle 4" long. 1" wide with 1 1/2" long fades. Limbs are 1 1/2" wide at the fades

Thought this made for an interesting picture..to the left of the vice are the grains of sawdust the result of rasping..to the right are mostly curls, the result of draw knifing.
Wonder how many grains of sawdust are in each one of those curls? Shows how much wood different tools remove.

She's a little dry, about 5.5% MC so I think I'll bring it up a bit before bending it much. The limb with the knots needs some bending to match the reflex of the other. I'll address that first.

She's up a couple percent, to 7%+, so today I went and did some adjustment to one of the limbs. The one with the knots was pretty straight while the other had about 1 1/4" of reflex. I figured I might as well make 'em the same while waiting for the MC to rise a little.

Now, what kind of color do you all think would be best?
It is very nearly impossible to get any kind of light color since the glue really darkens up the leather. My past handles have been either a medium dark redish brown similar to nice black walnut or else nearly black with some lighter grey showing that looks similar to ebony.

Did ya ever see what Dean Torges does with analine dyes and oasge? Pretty cool stuff. One big differnce between us hacks and the pros is the time and effort they put into the finishing.
I tillered for awhile on her tonight, camera batteries dead :( it's coming along.

Question for Terry: this is the point where sinew could be applied if you think you'd like to see that???. It will shoot in with some normal set as most unbacked bows of thist weight/length will, sinew would give it some reflex but take more time.

He he, just kiddin. Sure wish I could try her out but selfbows designed for a 28 inch draw flat scare me.
I'm really looking forward to this. It looks like the handle is tending towards a sort of dished Hill style? I'm more accustomed to a Torges style but I don't expect any problems. I'll do the double leather shelves and a back overlay to slightly round out the back side for comfort and send it on it's way.
Once again George, go ahead and mark the exact location you think the top of the shelf should be for me so I don't do nuthin stupid like mess up the tiller or put the bottom limb on top.... Not that I've ever done THAT before....talk about something that will tick ya off!

Got a long tube fresh off the Fed Express truck yesterday just as I was leaving for work. Of course, I had to stick around just long enough to open it. Sure is an awsome looking piece of hedge. Whoever gets it sure is gonna have a CLEAN looking bow and I'm sure it will shoot great too. I had to put a string on it just to see it at brace and she looks great! Oh how I wish she'd pull 31 inches..... But don't worry, I didn't even try it. I did a couple quarter draws in front of the mirror just to get an idea of how she bends and she looks real nice. GREAT early string tension. Feels like a real good hunting weight bow.
I'm about to start getting ready for work again today and might have to work a double shift but time permitting I'll get started on the handle tomorrow and post some pics as soon as I can. I'd like to have her back in the mail by Monday or Tuesday.

Since this bow is going to have double shelves for both right and left handed bidders, how about giving me a ball park thicknes for the arrow pass area. I'm thinking somewhere around 5/8 to 3/4 inch with the shelves about 3/8 inch but I'd rather take the pass down to about 1/2 inch for better shootability. That would put it 1/4 inch off center shot plus the thickness of the strike plate leather. Personally, I wouldn't have any qualms about making it that narrow in the handle but for liability sake, do any of you think that is too narrow?
As it is right now, the handle is 1 inch wide and 1 1/4 inches deep at the pass.

Now, we get down to the actual overlays. That piece of leather is totally unstained vegetable tanned cow hide for the first layer. This stuff is very light color but will darken a lot when the glue is added. It should end up close to the color of a dead oak leaf. It also will probably have a bit of a mottled appearance with some light blotches mixed in with the dark when it is finish sanded. Gives it sort of a more primitive/natural look than dyed leather.

If you squeeze the two pieces together between your fingers and cut the two at once, you end up with two mirror opposites like this.

And here is one shelf saturated with glue, the flat filed smooth and retreated with glue for the next layer. I decided to do this to try to get a crisper line between the two layers since the second layer is real soft stuff almost like buckskin and if I left the first layer rough the line would be rough.

Almost there....three layers total, one side skived roughly to shape and on the other side the third layer needs to be trimmed.

After triming it looks like this. Just need to flatten the shelves, finish sand it down to 2400 grit and it will shine like glass. You can see the mottled look I was talking about in the begining on that back overlay. I kinda like it that way. It should look neat next to the gar skins and if there is any space between, there should be some contrast with the wood once it darkens.

By the way, the corved side of the 4 in 1 rasp is about perfect for the shelf contour. It allowed me to get the same contour on both shelves which would be difficult to do free hand with a knife and sandpaper.

I cut out some pieces of vegetable tanned horse hide for that. It's the same piece of leather used to make cordovan but not the same tanning process. It's pretty slick but not quite like the real cordovan stuff. The thickness is just right for strike plates. There will be a full set of left and right shelf and strike plates plus two spare strike plates in the tube when I send it on. Here's a pic of the strike plate just laying in place.

It also got me to wondering about limb design. I mean, I've been used to a bow having the bottom limb about an inch shorter (ala Torges again) and the center of the bow being between the center of the handle and the shelf. This bow is symetrically limbed and center of the bow is center of the handle. I know plenty of people build them that way so it's just a personal preference. But, just to be sure, George and I are gonna have to do some pow wowing before I send it on to Timo to make sure I got the shelves in the right spot. Since I wasn't familiar with the design, I just put them where the top of my hand ended up when I held the grip. They actually "feel" kinda low to me and for my size hand (about average width) it would be just like shooting off the knuckle which is what I intended since it is a self bow. I want to make sure they are right before I send it on so I don't have them where it will mess up how it shoots. If you give me a call tomorrow George, I'll give you some measurements and we'll know for sure. I'm pretty green when it comes to bow design and layout so I'll gladly defer to your opinion. Won't be any big deal to cut 'em off and put some new ones on higher or lower. But sorry, no more pictorials...

I did the shelves exactly the same as the first time so it doesn't look any different except for the shelves are a tad lower down. I guess I eyeballed them pretty well because the pieces of leather that I had cut for the old shelves fit the new ones exactly perfect. Kinda suprised myself there. :rolleyes: :D

Worked the tip into submission,and filed me a flat spot to except the buff horn. This is water buff,and has some interesting grain sometimes.Did't take any pics of the process,as overlays have been covered numerous times here.
The leather handle overlays taper out to a point,so I tried to match the theme by bringing the tip overs to the same profile. next up is figuring the best way to stop the skins.......I have a template cut, but still ....Sturtevanting it?( pondering,thinking...you know?) ha

I have found that regular Tight Bond works just fine for these skins.It cleans up much easier, and sands cleaner.I apply a thin (watered down) coat to the bow, and then also to the skin.

After I lay the skins,they are in a mess,I use a small knife blade to arrange the scale overs,these are what gives these skins their pattern. It's takes lots of patience,but it's time well spent.

After the skins set a spell,I cut the access off.I leave about a half inch, for adjustments later.

Once the skins start to set, I use a very,very sharp knife to trim the sides close to finish.After that it's just a matter of babysitting them until they set for good.

What's the plan for the area between the skins and the overlays? Do the skins get kinda feathered out on both ends? I remember seeing one of your bows with the skins on it but don't remember how they ended. I do remember liking the transparency and how you could still see the color of the wood through the skin with just the scale pattern showing.

I stopped the skins short of Daves great leather work,and figured that feathering them out would work and look fine.....I ain't sure about it.
No pics for tonight, but I cleaned them up and tried to feather as planned.They might look ok once the finish is applied, but still I worry.So I took some black electrical tape and layed over the skin tapers, to see how that would look.I really feel like this would help that area in question,and give it another bit of appeal?
I'll take pics tomorrow night and post my idea, so we can get some imput.And if we decide to go that way, then someone else can step up and do a nice silk wrap with black.

I'm leaning to the black thread wrap on both ends. The pic shows(left to right) what the finished handle area would look like,with wraps...the tips (without wraps).... tips with wraps....and the finished bow with wraps..

I have some fireline,in a dark color that would work great for this.It's not dark black like the tape, but will work fine.

As for thread, I'd expect it would be best to put it on before finishing so that it finishes over smooth kinda like a fishing pole.

I talked with Mickey last night,and had made the choice of black thread...well I got to thinkin today,and liked Daves idea of maybe a brown.So I did one of each. I went with the brown.I think they blend better with the leather work.

I left the tips natural,as I had a good transition in that area.The finish should make them melt in.

I have done a little fine sanding & have decided to do clear on the finish. I think with the leather overlays & the super glue combined with the brown wrap it will look a little busy if I stain up to the wraps. Hope it`s ok . My sealer will give it more amber cast & will warm it up & show off that osage glow. I feel I`m cheating a little with the hard work already done, but I hope it helps the cause. She`ll be purty for sure. Nice work to all. Pics will follow the process, but be warned, watching a finisher work is akin to watching paint dry :bigsmyl:

A little tip I have learned is to wrap the tape backwards real tight first, rather than sticky side down. I learned the hard way years ago, if the finish is not cured yet the high tack tape will remove layers of finish, not good. I also use that method to tape off leather handles when I refinish bows, so as to not rip the smooth softer leather apart.
I am using gloss as my base coats to give the bow nice depth, it is a catalyzed varnish sprayed with an airbrush. coupla coats & then a switch to satin. A few more coats of that & we`ll rub her down with rottenstone & oil. Then the finishing wax & she `ll look showroom. More pics later.

Next post I will describe how I acheived the finish, it sure aint rocket science. For most of you guys i`m sure it is old news, maybe it will help an aspiring bowyer complete his task.

1- Final fine sand with 600 grid wet/dry paper.
2- Clean off with denatured alcohol. Use that to check for sander marks & such (there were none!)
3- Two coats of truoil dyed with Alcoholdye stain, applied with the trusty finger. Make sure you get the finish smooth, even & fill the grain as good as possible. Pay attention to the string grooves, tips & edges. Light sand & tack rag between coats.
4- One light coat of clear shellac for a sealer. You can get this in a spray can, but I like to use the airbrush better. Shellac sticks to any finish & can be topcoated with anything. I buff it out after dry with steel wool. Tack rag it off real good after this
5- I then applied 3 coats of gloss Sherwin William catalyzed varnish,light sanding with a 3m fine sanding sponge(sooo handy) & tack rag between coats. I also use a small haidryer to speed up the set up process. It give dust less a chance to settle on the finish. I basically heat the finish up until it sets & let the cats then air dry. I do this on all coats except stain.
6- Repeat step 5 with satin SW catalyzed varnish.
7- It could be called good at this point, but I love this next step. I hand rub rottenstone powder(3fff) & baby oil with a soft cloth to remove any imperfections in the finish, wipe it down with a soft cloth after your done.
8- Next & final step, I heat up briwax or minwax finishing wax & apply it sparingly. I then heat up the wax on the bow a little to dry & let it penetrate the surface. Buff it out with a soft cloth. NOW she glows.
The whole process is harder to write than to do, expecially for a hunt & peck typer guy.

If I can add to that answer, I've used both products for bows and found the TBird lacking when it came to ease of application and the appearance of the final product day in and day out. SW is much easier to handle and if mixed right, will produce as good if not better finish then TBird with half the fuss.

I absolutely love that leather color and pattern. I like the way you followed the pattern lines on the belly side when you cut the leather to length. That side view of the shelf really does look like a reptile eye half open like Tom said too. Pretty cool.
