Well guys if you've been following Mikes Saint Judes Bamboo Backed Yew thread you know we've split this effort from one team of Trad Gang bowyers into two for the Auction, Team BBY will be building a Bamboo Backed Yew Bow......Team Osage will be building a Osage Selfbow.... Mike has a head start on his materials and bowyers.... Who would like to help out the team Osage effort??...Terry
-
Thanks Terry!!
I sent Terry U an email about the stave he offered and turned him your way.
Mike
-
Terry, I'd be glad to help out anyway I can.
-
me too Terry
-
Put me on the list bud
-
I'll do something too, let the pros do shaping and tillering, let us newbe's do a little decorating like handle or tips.
-
I'm in also Terry if ya need.
-
Mike and Terry,
I got the E-mail, you want a 64" or 95" stave?
The 95" stave has a dogleg in the area where the handle would be, that if incorporated would automatically cant the bow. Let me know which you want or I'll send you one of each.
Terry
-
Well I'll make the same offer for this one as I did for the other one and volunteer to do a super glue and stacked leather handle overlay with the same type arrow shelf or shelves being an option.
Sounds like the other bow will have a wood overlay most likely. This will probably have a leather wrap too but the leather helps round out the back and can be made long enough to show a bit at the top and bottom.
-
Cool... It looks like we have a heck of a Team...... :D How does this look for assignments?
Terry U; Stave donation
Mickey: Layout,Roughing out to floor tiller.(Let Terry know which stave to send)
George: Final Tiller
Dave: Super Glue stacked leather handle overlay and rests
Timo: tip overlays and Grass Carp backing
Bigriver: bow finish
Shaun: Handle wrap
Dano: Bow Sock and String.
David: Ferret floppy quiver
Nick: Splined Self nocks on arrows
The only thing we might be missing are some arrows .... Anybody else interested?.... Terry
-
Terry I'm interested, but I'm out of my league here, this is going to be pretty neat to see. I'm looking forward to seeing this one. How about a Ferret Floppy quiver for it, that I could put together for it.
David
-
Thanks David.... Consider yourself on the team..... You get the Ferret Floppy quiver assignment..... Man I've not seen that one yet when did Mickey come up with that??... :D Floppy rests, Bowyers rules and now floppy quivers... He's well on his way to becoming the Gucci of self bows.... :D Terry
-
When will he come up with a floppy arrow? Or a Ferret's floppy hat?
Terry
-
Bigriver....I see you kinda slipped through the cracks on the BBY bow thread (And I'm not above stealing talent :D ) are you interested in doing the finish on this bow??.....Terry
-
I guess you got it covered. Of course you can count on me to help in any way I can.
A bit of reflection on the last couple times I've been involved in similar efforts. I bet well over $200 in shipping was involved in MOJOEs I and II just getting it to various bowyers, artisans. I know I spent over $50 myself. Minimize that to the extent possible and funnel that $ away from the USPS and into St. Jude's. Just a thought.
Peace,
John
-
John....Would you be willing to chronicle the build along on your site??..... I hear you on the shipping costs, any of us who have participated in these group builds have sunk some change into shipping. I'm at a bit of a loss on how to eliminate the shipping and get the money to ST. Judes and still allow the group participation that make these bows so special.....Terry
-
Nick .... you are the official splined self nocker..... Thanks....Do you have the shafts? Terry
-
Terry,
I'd love to put pics and stories of this and the other bow on the site. If all the participants will send the pics and some text, I'll put it up.
As for minimizing shipping, things like making sure the packaging for all shipments is less than 84" length + girth, reducing weight at all times and thoughtful project management come to mind.
-
Does everyone agree on a fast flight string?
-
I love it even though I know in advance it will be out of my reach. What a great idea.
-
I agree Bernie. I don't think anyone will get lucky and steal this bow like I did Ferret's osage selfbow last year.
This looks like the "Dream Team of Selfbowyers" but I will gladly contribute my expertise if you need any handshock, limb set, hinges, sloppy leather work, whipped ends or file marks. Just call if you need me.
-
John - I should have no problem sending pics and text.
-
John I listed the guys in the order I think they should get the bow.... Everyone take a look at the list and let me know if we need to make adjustments.
Just a little tip to make Johns' job a bit easier... When you take your pictures name them when you save them i.e. tiller1.jpg, tiller2.jpg etc. when you e-mail the pics reference the picture name and give a brief description of what you are showing.....
Dano I'll let Mickey, George and Timo make the call on fast flight...but with the tip overlays it should be no problem...
Lost arra.... I think Mikes' team might be able to use some of your talents on the BBY project...
Terry
-
The auction was in June last year if'n I remember right. Maybe July. I remember the closing conflicted with either Cloverdale or MOJam??? Anyways, we got some time. Send any pics and or stories/text to [email protected]
-
It said on the St. Jude page close was June 25, 8:00PM. That wasn't Mojam timing. Musta been Cloverdale.
-
Terry, I was away from the puter all day. Count me in, I would love to do the finish work.
-
Maybe I can get Chad Jones (young eyes) to scrape it into 1 growth ring unless that has been done already hee hee
-
Bigriver I'll put you down for the finish work...
Mickey I see visions of Tom Sawyer, a picket fence and buckets of whitewash.... :D Terry
-
Guys take a look at the line up and the order they are listed in..I think it makes sense except for having the Leather handle stack up before the Grass Carp backing....Timo what would you prefer??....If everything looks good I'm going to back off and let you guys do your thing..... Keep the pictures coming... :D Terry
-
I like the idea of doing the handle wrap last, because it means the bow would end up finished at my house... promise not to enjoy admiring it and of course doing a little testing too much. Plus the last shipping cost will be $0.00 should I be lucky enough to be the winning bidder! Better just send the quiver and arrows here too so I can take pictures of the finished set, yeah that's the reason.
I plan to do some fancy handle reasearch and look for special materials at Kalamazoo.
-
Terry,as I said on Mikes thread, it would be better if the skins go on just before the finish and final handle wrap.
-
Timo.... The way I have things listed right now your backing and tip overlays happening before the finish and handle wrap.... The part I was concerned about is that I have you doing the backing and tip overlays after Dave Bulla does the leather/ superglue handle overlay...Will your backing stick to that OK?? .. Terry
-
Yea Terry, I'll run the skins up next to the handle overlays.I was under the impression that it also gets a handle wrap over the super glue overlays?
The super glue overlays will protrude out past the final handle wrap.Is that correct?
-
Here's a little history on these staves. One of my mentors and a very good friend whom has passed to be with the Father, pointed out this Osage tree and gave me permission to cut it off of his property. He told me it make some very fine selfbows and that he would like for me and my wife to have bows made from it. Now, I am not a bowyer, but I am still trying. These staves should have some good Mojo, this man had killed so many deer with his bows and smoke poles, that he wanted a new challenge. So the last deer season before he passed he deer hunted with a spear and yes he took deer. So in conclusion,
I feel "Deacon" would be Honored and mighty proud that this stave is being used for the St. Judes auction and more especially the kids.
Your Friend,
Terry L. Uselton
-
Yep Timo you have it right... Wow Terry this is going to be a very special bow indeed....These boys will treat her right you've got the best of the best doing this build.. I can't wait to see her finished.... Terry
-
The order seems right to me. What about the name for the bow & any needed writing/ artwork before the finish is on?
-
It would be cool if you guys could send a small notepad journal with it that each person could make notes in,date and sign...Jim.
-
Bigriver... I think the Provenance and the character the bow exhibits as Mickey and George work her will yield a name....Anyone up for the signoff??.... Jim I think your Journal Idean is a great one.... Both of these bows should have one what do you think Mike??.....Terry
-
ttt
-
I'm not much for journals but I could include a copy of the thread with pics.
MIke
-
I shipped the stave to Mickey yesterday, if it isn't suitable, I'll send another.
Terry
-
^^^
-
Tuselton..found a notice in the mailbox today that there is a parcel waiting for me at the post office. I'll pick it up in the morning.
-
Mickey,
I just love the lines of that stave, had it ear-marked for myself, but figured it do greater good and be better made in more experienced hands. I am sure you guys will do her justice.
Terry
-
^^^
-
Mickey: I hope you have extra batteries for that new camera!
-
Pics Mic...lets see that stave.
-
Man you guys are demanding! Ok here we go. I picked up the stave that Tuselton mailed this morning. I actually opened it after eating lunch with Marv McFarlen down in Kentucky. Pretty little stave. Pretty straight looking from the back.
-
Looking at it from the side showed some uneven reflex, but at least it's reflex and not deflex that we have to deal with
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/stjudesstave2.jpg)
-
Looks good to this untrained eye. Did you get a volunteer with strong back and good eyes to chase a ring?
-
Up at one end, by the time I get the bark and sapwood off, there won't be enough for a tip I don't think so I might have to cut some of it off. There also appears to be a windcheck in that end. It's also not very deep, not deep enough for a rigid handled bow IMO. I think I can get about 58" of good wood out of it, so I am thinking semi bendy handled bow with some of the bend going up close to or into the handle.
-
The rings on 1 end are Decent, not the best ratio of early to late, but enough that I think i can get a solid back on it, but on the other end it is thin thin thin ringed. kinda scary. Won't know for sure on that end until I cut off the bad stuff and see how the rings look for sure
this is the good end
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/stjudesstave4.jpg)
-
I've certainly worked with a lot worse. Give me a few days to get it undressed and we'll see exactly what we have left to work with.
Shaun, I think Chad heard I was looking for a sucke..I mean...a volunteer and now is claiming he's got a bad leg and broken arm and can't scrape anything. Hmm wonder what Mike Hall is doing ...... ;)
-
Dang with that much sapwood use your bandsaw. LOL
Or get a couple of new guys to help hog the wood off.
Mike
-
well I attacked the stave with my giant Sorby. man there was a lot of sapwood on this baby
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/stjudesstave5.jpg)
-
Got all the bark and most of the sapwood off in fairly short order
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/stjudesstave6.jpg)
-
Gee what is that yellow stuff coming out here? Will stop here and wait for better light to try and get it into 1 ring.
Cut off the bad stuff and was left with 59" exactly to work with. With some pin nocks we could get a 58" bow. With standard side nocks a 57 1/2" bow.
-
Cool a bend through the handle entry for Dean's contest and the St. judes auction. Not bad.
Mike
-
Great Start Mickey....John Are You Getting All This?.... Terry
-
Here\\'s the Webpage (http://residents.bowhunting.net/sticknstring/sjosage.html)
-
Dang John you're good...and fast!
-
Not what I'd call typical bowery attire Mic!
Were's your tie?
-
Lookin good Mickey.
Nice duds, gentleman bowyer?
-
I went through the thread very quickly and I am sorry for being so late - If there is any arrow work that needs done for this project I would love to see to it. Now I know, being a practical sort of thinker, that you can't match up arras before the string is on it. I have plenty of raw material on hand for the shafts and I remember somebody wanting to do the nocks. I could send them shafts and they could send them back or whatever you all need. Just ask or PM me or for sure send a email to [email protected].
I owe the auction more than I can repay. I won a dog from Jake and she is the best animal that I have ever had around and she is full time entertainment for the whole family. I still don't think I gave enough for what I got.
fletch
-
John..... On the list of donators please add Ron Razzolini (Buffler Razz) He contacted me by e-mail and will be making a stringer with leather cups and a string holder for the bow......Great job on the site..... Terry
-
Mickey, Mickey, Mickey!!
Look at the mess in that shop. Dang boy them boxs aren't even in size order more or less alphabetized. And there is glue and stuff just setting out on the bench. What no place to go?
LOL
Hey how come you aren't sweating? Did you go take a shower and change before Dianne took the pics?
Mike
-
Mike I was thinkng the same thing about Mickey's shop. After what he did to your kitchen at javie camp you'd think he would know better than to have boxes partly open, stuff laying around half unrolled and such general disaray! Tsk Tsk TSk...shameful...down right shameful. :D
Bobby
-
The more I ponder it the more I like the idea of a bendy handle short bow. No one better to start it off then the Ferret.
Nice website John, quick work and well done.
-
But did you notice how nice his pictures are turning out now? :)
BTW Mickey - You've got rain and snow coming your way. Snow is coming down here pretty good right now. Oughta be enough to whiten up the ground a bit in case you get out this weekend.
-
Mickey, sorry about the crummy stave, knew I should of sent one of the long ones. I'll know better next time.
Terry
-
Timo, do you have a pic of a carp skin backed bow?
Charlie
-
This is close to what it should look like when finished Charlie. Not sure why those pixels are distorted?
-
(http://residents.bowhunting.net/sticknstring/mjcb10.JPG)
-
Cool pic John!
The pic in my post was from skin closer to the belly of the fish.
The one in Johns pic is closer to the top of the back.
If a man is mindful he can get enough(from one fish) to back 2 bows.
-
Thanks, now I gotta learn how to do that. It's not a problem to shoot a 36" + grass carp around here.
-
Sometimes working with osage is like dating a super model..oh she can look real pretty on the outside, but the more tiime you spend with her the more her "inner" flaws show up.
And that is what we have with this stave.
I got a chance to work on it before work, and at lunch time and things started showing up that have convinced me this stave in all liklihood will not make a bow after all.
Will take me awhile to download all the pics and show you why.
BUMMER!
-
First let me show you the growth rings. This is NOT a problem, but it is a bit confusing. On one end the best ring is the second ring down
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/stjudesstave13.jpg)
On the other end thereare 6 growth rings slammed together like a stack of paper and the best ring is the 7th one down
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/stjudesstave12.jpg)
No biggie on that though I'm sure Icould get it into 1 of those rings cleanly or if not rawhide back it
-
Anyow after taking off the bark and most of the sapwood I struck a centerline
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/stjudesstave8.jpg)
I then used a floppy ruler to layout a blank 1 1/4" wide end to end
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/stjudesstave9.jpg)
-
I measured this in about a dozen places on the centerline and then connected the dots
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/stjudesstave10.jpg)
Then went to the bandsaw and cut it to outline.
-
This revealed 2 fatal flaws (plus some minor ones)
Here's the first major flaw, a big old punky knot right on the edge of the bending limb. Once I removed the rest of the sapwood in that spot it was really close to the back. It would never bend there and it might break there.
the other thing that revealed itself is a crack, not sure if it's from splitting, or drying or wind, but it's 6"-8" long, runs thru the stave at an angle and isn't gonna leave enough wood if remove (PS look close it starts out green where the end was painted...it's in the center of the stave from this side and it's not the black line which is the back edge of the bow to the left...)
-
I went ahead and tapered the last 10" of each end down to 1/2" tips and the crack is still there and if anything it's worse. It runs within a quarter inch or so of the back.
Truthfully I don't want to waste any more time on this piece of wood.
I can substitute a piece of my stock if you want, just so Tuselton still gets credit for donating the stave. He could not have known about these deep unseen flaws and I don't want him to feel bad or go thru any more expense.
-
Mickey, good work to give it a try and find what lurks intside the proposed stave. It can be hard to tell without the effort.
I have some possible staves too and would not mind the cost of sending one your way. Let me know.
Thanks Tuselton for donating the first one.
-
HOLY COW MICKEY!
Do you section old chryslers in that bandsaw?
Is that the 10hp model or the 20?
My 15 year old Craftsman looks like a toy next to that monster!
Too bad about that stave. It's a good thing we have the "A" team on this project. I would have found those flaws exploding on the tillering tree.
-
Dang I hate when one gives up like this. Tuselton said he would send another stave but wants me to look at it first. I think he's loading up his stash and bringing them over tomorrow.
MIke
-
Mickey,
Can ya make a kids bow out of that crappy stave?
Terry
-
^
^
^
-
Terry I was going to box it up and send it back down to ya to play with. Not sure if you could get anything out of it but if you want to try......
-
I know I'm stating the obvious here, but "bows" aren't all that wood is good for. Wood's highest calling, perhaps, but not all. Use that wood - either yourself or give it to someone who will - for another, albeit lesser, purpose. Turkey calls... knife handle scales... ANYthing, just use it. Especially osage - man, in an osage tundra like here, it's just painful to think about it not getting used.
Especially, those thin rings - nice pitch in a call, eh?
Just a thought. No such thing as bad wood, in my book. Just bad applications of its properties. This one isn't destined to be a bow, but don't count it out altogether.
My two cents.
Tim - hates to see good wood gone bad - Clark
-
Mickey,
Give it to someone that wants it. I just got back from wingnut's shop. It looks like we are going to have to find someone else to donate a stave. Wingnut managed to cut 2 billets out of one stave and they are still wet. I have 2 more staves out there but the odds are, they are going to be billets too. Sorry folks, looks like I stepped in it again.
Terry Uselton
-
Hey, Terry, from where I'm standing there's not a thing to be sorry about! I sure hope Killdeer pipes up here, she's much better at helping get the right things said than I am. I know how you feel, I get that way all too often. We're always harder - hardest - on ourselves. Imagine for a moment that it was someone else - what would you be feeling, thinking, or saying, to THEM? I think you'd be first to offer comfort, and remind them that they were giving a good thing, with the best motivations and intentions. And ya know? - you'd be right.
As for billets, I just spent a large part of the lunch time (okay, and a bit more than that) looking up splicing, etc. Timely thing to do - even Rusty posted that some of the best bows are from billets, since it's easier to find good wood 36" long than it is to find a good full length stave. A good bowyer, and a good "modified fishtail splice," and you may just have a better bow than a full length stave could ever produce. Plus, a lot easier to induce reflex or deflex that way.
Ya done good, friend. I know that you're feeling bad about it, but it makes me and I'm sure most if not all of us ache for ya. Anyone that would have donated any wood, it could have been the same exact thing. Just remember - think what you'd say to someone else. And then, take it to heart. Okay? Besides, that stave is destined to be something else....
"St. Jude's Osage Box Turkey Call"
"St. Jude's Osage-Handled Knife"
"St. Jude's Osage Smoking Chips" - okay, maybe not! lol!
"St. Jude's Osage Billy Club" - hmmmmm....
"St. Jude's Osage Flute"
"St. Jude's Osage........."
Well, you know what I mean...
Cheer up, Bud. And God Bless you.
-
Terry, unless you were superman with xray vision you could have seen the problems. i've looked at a lot of osage and didn't find them until I had done quite a bit of work to it and removed a lot of wood. Like I said I didn't want you to feel bad.
In the meantime I have a piece, Shaun has volunteered a piece and George Nagel has volunteered a piece so we have wood. I am not in charge of this project, as far as I can tell Terry Petko is team leader. I'll wait for his instuctiion on how to proceed. In the meantime I may just remove a little bark and stuff on the piece I have.
-
tim, I gave some to a friend with some hickory chips. I am not sure how that turned out but it is a fruit wood. I have been pondering yellow and orange mulch around the house.
-
Hey, Josh - yeah, I hear ya, I've been told that it smokes well - what I meant was, being in an osage tundra like here, "BURNING" it would be sacriligious, lol!
Actually, I've still got two saplings that keep sprouting in the spring, so perhaps there's hope that I'll find a winter hardy osage for Zone 3!
Also, Chris R sent me an osage board and a bamboo backing, and Mike Byrg sent an osage stave. There's osage around here, after all!!
-
Well, I've recieved a couple of offers on staves for the St Judes project. Was kinda hoping Terry Petko would come on and help with some advice.
-
I can't wait for you guys to get to the point where we can choose up spined shafts. I've emailed Nick and volunteered to all the necessary arrow work that is needed. I intend to do the fletching for sure and I'm willing to do the paint as well. if some of you guys would give me some suggestions about what you think would be appropriate for a lofty project such as this - I'd do a few mock ups so we could discuss the final look. You can all email pics directly to me if you have them. These arrows need to be as sweet as the bow.

Hi guys.... I was up Javie hunting ( was scheduled to be out there for the week) but a touch of stomach flu sent me packing for home late yesterday..... Mickey ..... I believe Shaun had the first offer for a make up stave I just replied to an e-mail from him and you should have a package coming your way.....
Terry..... There's a lot to a stave that nobody can see ,no matter what their experience level, until the shavings start hitting the floor.... The ST Judes Auction is not just a contribution of money to a worthy cause from Trad Gang members, It's a contribution of the heart..... Nobody will have a bigger contribution than what you offered up.... Thank You.... Wood has a spirit to it and that piece of Osage just didn't want to be a bow..... I'm sure it will talk to someone and wind up happy as something else.... :) Terry
-
Sorry to hear you got sick Terry. Think it was the dehydrated food?
LOL..... Are you going back when you feel better? Did you spot Joe while you were there?
Good deal on Shaun's stave. I'll be looking forward to it and let you know when it arrives. I'l also let the other offering parties know.
Thanks Terry.
-
Well I got to thinking about the piece Tussleton sent....maybe I could get a kids bow out of it, if I narrowed it and thinned it enough. So I went down and scraped it into 1 ring. I narrowed it to a little less than 1" wide and got the nasty knot in the handle (which I also reduced to about 3/4" in diameter)to mostly go away, just a big dip in the side of the fade now. I thinned the limbs to near nothing and I just can't escape that nasty crack that runs diagonally thru the limb OR the big honking non bending knot in the other limb. I tried guys...I really did. It's just not meant to be.
I'm going to go take a shower and then run up to Chad Jones and try to tag a whitetail. Feel like killing sumpthin!
-
Mickey,
You didn't need to do that, unless you just needed something to kill time. Shoot Mickey stick one for me.
Terry
-
I know terry but it's a sickness..if there is a bow in a piece of wood I want to get it out of there. LOL
I'm not done yet.....
-
Mickey, Thanks for taking the time post all those pix,I know what a pain that can be.
Looking forward to more  :notworthy: :notworthy:
-
Big brown truck should be calling at the Lotz residence today with yeller wood. Sure am looking forward to watching this piece of osage get worked on by such a team. I think this one has a bow hidden in it, but only time and tools will tell.
-
Shaun....keeping us in suspense huh? shoulda snapped a pic before you shipped her. :readit:
-
Shaun was right..waiting on the porch for me when I got off the road...bring brown box.
A quick look over tells me this is a heck of a piece of sage, won't know for sure until I get the bark and sapwood off. Should be easy to get into 1 ring too. Quick count on the rings shows 8 to the inch. Doesn't get any better than that IMO.
Thanks for the donation Shaun.Looking forward to carving on this piece.
-
Ferret, you got a quart of oil handy ta keep that draw knife from overheating tonight?
-
Gonna be some sore shoulders tonight huh George :D
-
Here's a couple preliminary pics of the stave Shaun sent

Nice huh?
-
Very nice.
-
Now that is a primo piece of osage.
-
Very nice indeed.....Do both ends look that nice? Terry

1 growth ring end to end

the dry check in the first photo goes into the heartwood...we are going to lose 3 - 3 1/2" off the end of this stave
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/shaunstave10.jpg)
luckily it's 67 " long so we are going to get mayybe 63" of good wood out of it...enough for a rigid handled bow.
-
Very nice indeed
-
Mickey you working out in your shop or somethin? :saywhat:
Looks like the stave is on it's way to greatness
-
Nice early/late ratio! Wow, I hope you can follow the grain o.k.

Hey these St Jude bows and accessaries are fantastic and couldn't ask for a better bunch of Pro's to bring em around!! Thanks and looking forward to the finished products!!
-
Doug great to see you posting! Must be feeling better.
-
Hey good to see you Doug. Hope you are feeling better.
Ok Bro Randy came over and confered with me on the stave. We can't tell how deep the dry check on the one end goes(it may only be thru one ring) but we decided to layout the bow on the entire stave as we can always shorten it later
I got to tell you the floppy "Bowyer's Rule" is one of the best things I have ever come up with. Makes layout SOOOO easy.
Here you can see the handle box laid out..handle 4" long. 1" wide with 1 1/2" long fades. Limbs are 1 1/2" wide at the fades
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/shaunstave13.jpg)
-
I carried the 1 1/2" width to 9" past the fade and then tapered to 1/2" tips
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/shaunstave11.jpg)
Tomorrow I'll go over to Bro Randy's and we will bandsaw it out.
-
Lookin good Mickey, I have to agree with ya, the floppy Bowyers rule is the Cat's MEOW.
-
I see a bow forming, good work Mickey. I use my see-thru Ferret's Floppy Ruler all the time, great invention.
Doug, good to see you recovered enough to post. Get well soon, we need you for the auction. Thanks for all your hard work for the kids.
-
Looks great Mic. This is gonna be fun.
My floppy ruler got 'et by the doors, bring one with you next week if you have an extra.
-
went over to Bro Randy's this afternoon and we cut it out to the lines and removed some of the belly wood with his bandsaw

Lookin Good Mickey.... Terry
-
Let's see, if you and your bro are both 6'2", that makes the bow blank about 76". Nice BIG bandsaw. Looks like its becoming a bow...
-
Bro Randy has got a nice shop!!! I think we got a bow here
-
Looking good. I like that floppy ruler, but i have a question. Is yours the right length? Some guy tried to give me one but it wasn't long enough. I guess inches are measured different where he comes from. :D
-
Keepers of the thread....please feel free to TTT this thread to keep it on the front page. I'm going to have to un-feature it so it wont be posted at the top.
Thanks,
Terry
-
Last night I got the limbs trimmed down to an even 3/4" thick, did the initial shaping of the fades, cleaned up the bow to exact outline wth a rasp, and rounded the back edges with a scraper. Today I'll cut in the facets and start getting it ready to ship to George Nagel up in Minnesota for final tillering.
-
:D This is gonna be one heck of a bow.... Terry
-
Here's some more pics
Laying out my facets which I do a little differently than Terry. After getting the limbs 3/4" thick I lay out a 3/8" line on both the belly and side of all limbs (3/8" up measured from the back)
-
Then I rasp a flat between those 2 lines which creates the facets
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/shaunstave18.jpg)
-
From the end the limb profile is now 6 sided (counting the back)
-
We are now getting some bend in the limb yet still have plenty of wood for making whatever weight we want this bow to be (notice Jawge Tsoukalas replica tillering outfit) ;)
-
I now get to pass this on to George Nagel for final tillering. There are 2 spots ol '46 is going to have to watch out for..knots in the middle of 1 limb, but I don't think they are going to be of any major concern, just an annoying inconvenience
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/shaunstave19.jpg)
Draw knifing in this area will cause it to "tear out" or "chunk out"..and it will have to be rasped in those areas to avoid that.
-
READING CHIPS
Thought this made for an interesting picture..to the left of the vice are the grains of sawdust the result of rasping..to the right are mostly curls, the result of draw knifing.
Wonder how many grains of sawdust are in each one of those curls? Shows how much wood different tools remove.
-
Other than getting it boxed up and mailed to George my portion of this little endeavor is finished. Thanks guys I had fun!
-
Nice work on the facets Mick. This tread will make a killer tutorial.
-
My goodness that looks nice. Coming to the point where Team Osage leader Terry is going to have to give us some more direction before long. This piece of wood, and what Mickey has shown so far looks like the sky is the limit for weight and design. Do ya have a side profile pic Mickey?
I like your whoop de doo bow in the background
-
George... I'd say bring her in around 55-60# for a good hunting bow most anyone could draw....The design is up to you..... I'm sure the wood will be talkin to ya.... :D Terry
-
Good job Mickey, my floor looks like that too, except mine isn't as clean. That's an interesting piece of wood behind your vice in the floor tillering picture.

I did the initial shaping of the fades but the handle box is square so you can shape the handle how you like, and it should sit well in your tiller tree
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/shaunstave24.jpg)
-
Yea it will be interesting to see if that crooked thing in the background will ever make a bow.LOL
I am such an idiot sometimes..trying to work that crooked butt wood. :knothead: :knothead: but it keeps calling to me.
-
That thing in the background makes me dizzy, but it does have a certain attraction. Nice job getting the stave to a bow blank. Looks like it would shoot already - if you could pull 300 lbs. Having fun watching it come to life.
-
Nice job Mickey!!
-
ttt
-
Looks like it's going to be a great bow when finished.
That crooked butt wood as you call it is making me drool. :bigsmyl:
-
Guess I should mention why we do those facets like that for any new bowyers that may be following along. The easiest method of removing wood on the belly, is to drawknife or rasp the edge off 1 side, then the other side, then remove the flat or peak in the middle. It also makes it easy to check weight or resistance when floor tillering. Measuring up specific amounts from the back keeps you from getting one side thinner than the other side. Dean Torges explains this very well in his book Hunting the Osage Bow although in Dean's method I think there are only 5 sides with the center of the limb being a peak like the roof on a house. I find it easier to do the 3/8" facets than trying to rasp or drawknife to the center of the 1 1/2" wide limb foor some reason. In the end we end up in the same place, but Dean's method is probably a little more orderly in it's wood removal. That's why Dean is a highly respected pro while I'm a lowly wood hack :D
-
Ahhh now we're getting somewhere!
-
Does this mean I have to clean up my shop like Mickey's & Randy's for the pictures? ....this could turn out to be a lot of work :D
-
Yea but it's for a good cause George

-
Just to add to Mickeys description of facet tillering.... The peak, as he describes in Dean's method,is there initially to help remove as much wood as possible that is not going to be a bow..... It is then rasped flat after the limbs are moving to create the last facet....If you create that facet from the start at the 3/4" thickness you are leaving a lot of wood there that is just going to wind up on the floor... At least that's what I've garnered from using Deans technique..... Terry

Just got a note from George.... Gonna be a few weeks til we see a progress report....It's that time of year when the snowbirds head south for a sabatical in warmer climes... He and Ferret are heading South of the border with their Senoritas for a well deserved break...... Terry
-
ttt... are we back from Mexico George?
-
No Shaun George and Eva were staying another week. I am supposed to mail the bow to him next Monday.
-
Thanks Mickey for the update. I have been doing some handle research by poking around at Kzoo and UBM. Closing in on some exotic leather for the grip. Looking forward to more pictures and stories as this thing gets whittled and polished.
-
The arm guards are almost done and I just got to see the pics man Robin does some awesome work.... This bow and the BBO are gonna be a real treat for whoever wins the bid.... Terry
-
Terry,
Those armguards really set the standard for this project. I hope us wood hacks can match the effort.
Mike
-
Is there pics of the armguards somewhere?
-
Tom,
Not yet; Terry and I got a sneak preview before they are complete. They should be here in a week or so.
Mike
-
Just back from Mexico...we all took sick with bad colds tha last week but am now on the mend and ready to scrape on that bow...send her along Mickey.
-
:D Bienvenido a las Estados Unidos George.... Terry
-
Huh?? :(
-
Yeah, I got the George part :bigsmyl:
-
Man I know My spanish is a bit weak but I hope I get a better response from any shady guys I run into if I hunt down near the border... :D Welcome Back George..... Terry
-
Dang you could have worked when you were sick..how do ya get sick down in that environment. I guess that's what you get when you are half nekid from dawn to dusk. :saywhat:
Will send the bow out in the next couple of days.
Welcome home!
-
Translation: "Welcome back to the United States, George!"
-
Heres a pic of the other guard to bring this thread to the top. Terry, the string for lacing these guards can be switched to help match the bows also.
-
Very nice armguard. You did a great job on the tooling.
Going to be starting the knife for this bow in the next week or so. I've got the blade and the osage. Just need to finish a couple of things I've got going now, then I'll be starting it.
Hope to do a build-a-long with it.
-
Purrdy!! Looks so good I'd hate for that waxxy string to even touch it.
-
I'm thinking the one with the black lace would look good with the black belly on the bamboo backed bow.
Mike
-
That sounds good Mike..... I think the lacing on the white one looks like Indian Bone beads.... It's got a bit of a primitive feel to match the selfbow...... Terry
-
You could always dye them yellow :D
Got the bow tubed up tonight and will try and get it in the mail to George tomorrow.
-
Robin, those armguard's are sweet, awesome work. These bows are going to bring in some serious donations.
-
LOL @ Mickey..... Terry
-
Guys, let me know when it`s ready for finishing so I can make sure I have my equipment at the shop. I will need a week or so for the finishes Im going to put on. Thanks.
-
A 6' package arrived this weekend from the Ferret residence. That Mickey does a mighty good job of floor tillering...even cut the first facets on her for me.
She's a little dry, about 5.5% MC so I think I'll bring it up a bit before bending it much. The limb with the knots needs some bending to match the reflex of the other. I'll address that first.
Pictures to come...
-
:D ..... Here we go...... Terry
-
Terry, she's getting wiped down with a damp cloth and sitting where the rh is about 40%. It's 20% here in the house b/c of the cold weather we've had (you wouldn't know about that sort of thing) :) I think it was really dry at Mickey's too.
-
Terry said "Welcome back to the United States George"
Danny
-
Well, waiting to rehydrate wood is kin to watchin paint dry. I'm itching to be tillering on this bow.
She's up a couple percent, to 7%+, so today I went and did some adjustment to one of the limbs. The one with the knots was pretty straight while the other had about 1 1/4" of reflex. I figured I might as well make 'em the same while waiting for the MC to rise a little.
Here are a few pre-tiller pics.
Notice the one limb is straight

Olive oil on the bow so as not to lose as much moisture.
The reflexed side got the same treatment so hopefully they come out the same.
I'll be showering with this puppy tomorrow :)
-
"I'll be showering with this puppy tomorrow" George, you realy get into your bowyerin huh? :bigsmyl: Nice shop buddy.
-
Dano, the shops only about half a big as it was. Eva bought a new car this year and now thinks she should park it inside. ....the sacrifices we make for our wives :D :D :D
-
Eva's a lucky lady for sure, don't know if I'd give up half my shop. :bigsmyl:
Yeah, I prolly would  :(
-
Looking good George
-
off the caul, both limbs are the same now.
-
Looking good George..... This is gonna be one heck of a nice bow..... Terry
-
Looks great George. I can see a bow about to pop out of that stick.
-
I'll start bending her when she's at 9%+. She's in the shower now, I go in and turn the hot water on (not on the bow) every hour or so to put the RH up at 70%. Wallpaper'l peel but what the heck :D :D :D
-
Done peeling wallpaper yet? ttt
-
Yep Shaun, the MC is up a couple and I'll began tillering tonight or tomorrow. Pics to come.
-
Man.... John's wrapping up his part on the HBBBOWBB (Horn Belly Bamboo Backed Osage with Bloodwood Bow) and we're about to see another craftsman at work......This is a banner year for the St. Judes Bowyer's... You guys are awesome... Terry
-
I just put it on the tree tonight to get things evened out a little. She's about 60#@3" right now.
-
Timo, I assume your next to recieve the bow. I'll leave the tips oversized with temp nocks only. That way you can work your magic on them.
-
George Here's the Team assignments...Dave gets her next, then Timo....
Terry U; Stave donation
Mickey: Layout,Roughing out to floor tiller.(Let Terry know which stave to send)
George: Final Tiller
Dave: Super Glue stacked leather handle overlay and rests
Timo: tip overlays and Grass Carp backing
Bigriver: bow finish
Shaun: Handle wrap
Dano: Bow Sock and String.
David: Ferret floppy quiver
Nick: Splined Self nocks on arrows
-
Ok Terry.
Dave, I'll need your address. And I should probably leave the handle area rough and oversized so you can take it down to where you want it??
-
Terry,
That would be a HBBBYWBB cause it's yew not osage. LOL
Mike
Hope is it brings as many digits in the auction.
-
Sent you a PM George.
Now, what kind of color do you all think would be best?
It is very nearly impossible to get any kind of light color since the glue really darkens up the leather. My past handles have been either a medium dark redish brown similar to nice black walnut or else nearly black with some lighter grey showing that looks similar to ebony.
To see what I am talking about, go here:
http://tradgang.com//noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=018968;p=1
The brown color is shown on page one and I think the finished black handle is on page four.
-
Dave, the mahogany color would look very good. I did one a few years ago using Timo's grass carp skins and a dark grip like yours (not as fancy)...and it looked real nice. The skins I had, had a lot of brown in them.
-
On that same note, do you guys want the bow natural osage or should I stain it darker? I have some antique cherry dye stain I have used on osage & it`s awesome looking. I have some pics of a recently finished bbo with thatstain if need be.
-
How's about I send the bow case and string to Bigriver so when he's done the bow has some cloths. BTW what length bow are we shooting for?
-
Man......that's what I get for not checking ALL the trheads more often. You guys are really rockin' with this thing! GREAT JOB!
Dano....That going to be a back-hair string, or one of your famous 'belly button-lint' strings?
-
Dano, she'll be about 64", maybe a tad less depending on what Timo wants to do with the nocks.
-
rocdoc, I been savin belly button lint all year for this :bigsmyl:
George, I better not jinx this bow by makin the string yet huh? Sides there's no real rush on the string I suppose. ;)
-
Dano wait for Tim. I'm gonna leave the tips wide so he can do whatever he needs. If it's little pin nocks...it's a 64" bow...if it's something more substantial it'll be 63.5" or 63".
-
Gotcha buddy.
-
Brian,
Did ya ever see what Dean Torges does with analine dyes and oasge? Pretty cool stuff. One big differnce between us hacks and the pros is the time and effort they put into the finishing.
I tillered for awhile on her tonight, camera batteries dead :( it's coming along.
-
George, I have seen that & talked to Dean about it the one time he was at the Kzoo expo. Beautiful stuff. I can do something similar, but I need a concensus if we want stain or natural finish. I dont want to make the descision.
The finish is the easy part, making a bow, now that`s out of my league. You guys are amazing.
-
Stain sounds real nice... I think it makes a selfbow look classy..... John Scifres did a stain on the Mojo II bow and it was awesome.. George is right about the finish seperating the hacks from the pros'..... Terry
-
Thanks Terry. Stain it will be. I`ll do her proud.
-
Hmmm, not sure if stain will be a problem with the leather overlays or not. As I show in the link in my last post, it gets saturated with super glue. Well, some of that super glue gets on the wood and frankly is part of the reason I'm able to get such a smooth transition from the leather to the wood. I'm wondering if the stain will penetrate the wood differently where the super glue is? I guess it could be sanded some but when I polish the overlay, I usually polish the leather and wood like it is a single piece and I think it may be very difficult to try to sand just the wood to get rid of the super glue without messing up the leather or causing a ridge of some sort.
Maybe do one of those blended stain jobs that are dark at the tips and fade towards the handle?
-
Dave, my guess is the super glue will not allow the stain to penetrate the wood, leaving light spots. It is the same problem I run into when I stain woodwork in houses & the carpenters get glue where they are not supposed to. The only way we get rid of it is to sand with 100 grit paper. we might have to rethink the stain & go clear.
-
How about staining the tips dark fading to natural around the handle area? Chad
-
Fading, as Chad suggests, sounds like the way to go. It's easy with achochol analines. I've seen it and done it myself, looks good.
-
Timo, for a 64" bow I will have exactly 1/2" from the top edge of the string groove to the tip of the limb....less after it's rounded off. What did you have in mind for nocks and tip overlays?
-
To the top guys, I'm lovin this.
-
I usually use a few power tools (lazy and faster), but for this one it's just a scraper and a rasp. It is strung pulling 58#@20", showing little set. It proly settle in a little less after sanding and some shooting. Give me a day or so and I'll have it exactly, but I think you could procede with the arreas since they be cut and tip weight adjusted by the winner to fine tune their spine.
Question for Terry: this is the point where sinew could be applied if you think you'd like to see that???. It will shoot in with some normal set as most unbacked bows of thist weight/length will, sinew would give it some reflex but take more time.
-
George.... We might not have enough time for the sinew to set up before the auction and I wouldn't want to cut the guys short on time for the work that's left..... Let's just leave her a top end self bow..... Terry
-
Ok Terry, I figured that and went ahead and kepy tillering. Proly be done tonight, some sanding and in the mail. I'll post all the pics when I'm done. There is still 2-1/2 months 'til the auction and she'll be looking good a lot sooner than that.
Dano: We need a string for a 63 1/2" bow :D Hows about 64" and we'll twist a couple of times :)
-
Thanks George, who should I send it to Terry?
-
George, really looking forward to some pics.....
-
Dano, I don't know who is the last to get it, check with the boss man.
John, here's a crappy one from yesterday, still a little flat spot around the knots on the left side...since fixed.
-
Gosh you got that looking good George!
-
Thanks Mickey, She looks better tonite. The boss just told me we're going out, guess I won't wrap it until tomorrow :( only a couple inches to go.
-
Nice work George ;)
-
well tell the boss that Dianne and I said Hi!
-
George, that is looking really nice. Looks like its not taking set out of the fades and the arc is sweet.
Dano, I may be the last on the list with handle wrap, photos and shipping to the winning bidder (which may be real cheap if I win). Are you making a FF string?
-
Yep Dano...... Ship it to Shaun...... You guys are doin great...... This lil bow is gonna be a beauty when it's done..... Terry
-
Yep FF for sure Shaun, PM me your address and I get it and the bow sock to ya soon.
-
Sanding it now.

Beautiful tiller George, I like that back board, I gotta do that when I get a bigger shop.
-
Oooo la la. Wonder if it shoots half as good as it looks.
-
Dano, I usually have a background of furnace and plumbing pipes :( ...after seeing JD's I figured I better rig up a good'un for this bow :D :D
-
Shaun, I'll give her a trial run tomorrow when it's light out.
-
You did good buddy, unbraced profile looks great.
-
It was 58#@27.5", I sanded the limbs to 220 and expect she'll be at or about 56# or so at 28". Next I'll shape the grip, sand the tips some and ship it out.
-
Looks great Geo! Don't worry about sanding the back of the tips.I'll have to flatten them level for the overs.
-
Yea baby! Looks great George. Excelent work! Gonna be a dandy  :notworthy:
-
Thanks guys. Tim I'll just leave the tips unsanded so theres more material to blend into the overlays. The tips are pretty small as they are.
-
Now that is what tiller is supposed to look like.
-
That's one fine tiller George.... simply awesome.... Terry
-
Thanks,
She's shooting, 57#@28", proly be closer to 55# after final sanding and some shooting by the winner.
Dave, I rough shaped the handle but there is still some work I left for you. It should arrive your house mid next week....have fun.
-
You done good George. :D What de heck is that white stuff on the ground??? :bigsmyl:
-
Dano...... I'd razz him about the white stuff too but believe it or not we have some about 10 miles from the house today......Desert snow is a pretty rare site down here..... This is our first moisture in 143 days and it's coming down in buckets and it's cold....... Awesome bow George but I think the owl is behind ya..... Are those legal up there..... :bigsmyl: Terry
-
I was tinkin that's a bad spot for a 3D Owl ain't it?? :bigsmyl:
-
Awww, it's just one of them lil' spotted ones I shot an' taxidermied last summer :D :D :D
-
Tuff to pick a spot on them little babies huh? :bigsmyl:
-
Can't imagine a finer tiller arc. Well done George! Did you let one or two fly?
-
-
Yep Shaun, shot a bunch of them.
Only hit two owls :bigsmyl:
-
Hmmm looks great! I wonder what she'll pull at my draw length???? Lets see, I pull about 31 inches.... about 3 pounds per inch.... Bet she pulls a solid F#&*^$^!!!, ouch, Uh Oh....
He he, just kiddin. Sure wish I could try her out but selfbows designed for a 28 inch draw flat scare me.
I'm really looking forward to this. It looks like the handle is tending towards a sort of dished Hill style? I'm more accustomed to a Torges style but I don't expect any problems. I'll do the double leather shelves and a back overlay to slightly round out the back side for comfort and send it on it's way.
Once again George, go ahead and mark the exact location you think the top of the shelf should be for me so I don't do nuthin stupid like mess up the tiller or put the bottom limb on top.... Not that I've ever done THAT before....talk about something that will tick ya off!
-
You'd think a guy that put that much tedious work into tillering a bow would at least put his arm guard all the way on. ;) Nice work Geo. Chad
-
Dave, It isnt a dish style, I just rasped it down below the tearouts in the wood and thats sort of what it looks like. I marked where more wood should be taken off and it'll be a straight grip... didn't want to take too much off because I'm not sure what you plan to do, thickness of the leather, ect...it's packed up and ready to ship....don't pull it to 31" :help:
-
Man with George's excellent tiller job on Shaun's clean piece of hedge, this is turning out to be one SWEET bow.
Can't wait to see Dave Bulla's handiwork added!
-
Mickey, that was a fine piece of wood. It all starts there, Thanks Shaun.
-
Great tiller George. Very nice!
-
ttt
-
Thanks John.
Dave, it's on the boat to KC.
-
It's HERE!
Got a long tube fresh off the Fed Express truck yesterday just as I was leaving for work. Of course, I had to stick around just long enough to open it. Sure is an awsome looking piece of hedge. Whoever gets it sure is gonna have a CLEAN looking bow and I'm sure it will shoot great too. I had to put a string on it just to see it at brace and she looks great! Oh how I wish she'd pull 31 inches..... But don't worry, I didn't even try it. I did a couple quarter draws in front of the mirror just to get an idea of how she bends and she looks real nice. GREAT early string tension. Feels like a real good hunting weight bow.
I'm about to start getting ready for work again today and might have to work a double shift but time permitting I'll get started on the handle tomorrow and post some pics as soon as I can. I'd like to have her back in the mail by Monday or Tuesday.
Whoever is next, go ahead and send me your address by PM or email.
-
By the way, a question for some of you bow gurus...
Since this bow is going to have double shelves for both right and left handed bidders, how about giving me a ball park thicknes for the arrow pass area. I'm thinking somewhere around 5/8 to 3/4 inch with the shelves about 3/8 inch but I'd rather take the pass down to about 1/2 inch for better shootability. That would put it 1/4 inch off center shot plus the thickness of the strike plate leather. Personally, I wouldn't have any qualms about making it that narrow in the handle but for liability sake, do any of you think that is too narrow?
As it is right now, the handle is 1 inch wide and 1 1/4 inches deep at the pass.
-
Dave, she's tillered to shoot off'n the knuckels or a floppy, shoot around handle... will work either right or left handed.
-
Ayeee I'd be afraid of narrowing it much more. 1/2" would be mighty mighty thin...scary thin to me
-
Dave, I just emailed you some pics of a few grips that will work well on that bow.

Mickey, this is something I've wondered about. Assuming the old adage "Twice as wide is twice as strong but twice as thick is 8 times as strong" is true, why isn't thinning the arrow pass but leaving it a bit thicker more popular?
Assuming the proper thickness was added, wouldn't the end result be the same as far as safety is concerned, with the thinner arrow pass being more spine friendly and possibly easier to tune?
-
Rangeball, I suppose it could be that thin, and yes it would make arrow spining easier, but being old a set in my ways I don't need to take a chance with a bow that has taken a lot of hard work to get where it is just for the sake of making it easier to tune. I'd rather deal with tuning than making a new bow should the riser prove too weak and break there. I also shoot 14 or 16 strand strings where others shoot 10 or 12's cause I'd rather has the extra strength and dependability than the extra speed.

I'm working on it.....
I have the back overlay about done and will start on the shelves soon. Pics to come. Gotta get the manual out to remember how to do the pics. Gotta resize and all that.
-
LOL.... I'm not pushing Dave.... Just keeping it up where it's easy to find.....Take your time and thanks for the contribution.... Terry
-
Timo, if you read this, PM me your address since you are next on the list.
Of course, I think I could find your house again if I was to take a drive down that way.... Can't do it during the week though. If there is no hurry, I could either mail it during the week or bring it down in person on the weekend. Provided of course, I'm not forced into any weekend overtime at work.
-
Well, the bow handle/overlays are done, just a matter of getting all the pictures posted. Danged dial up takes about 20 minutes to upload a 7 megapixel picture to photobucket and that's no exageration!
I was uploading one picture at a time but the last go around I decided to try to upload three. I hope it doesn't take an hour and 20 minutes this time :scared:
Once these last pics get loaded I'll go ahead and start posting them here. I've got about ten loaded and have close to twenty more to go if I don't edit a bunch.
-
:banghead:
-
Okee dokee, it only took about 45 minutes for those last three to load. Whooohoooo! That's like a buy two get one free deal!!!!
Anyway, here are a couple of pics of the bow as I received it from George. The handle was pretty close to finished dimensions. I just had to true it up a bit.

Here is after evening things up some:
And then rounding slightly towards the back. The piece of leather I will be using is laying on the bench.
Now, we get down to the actual overlays. That piece of leather is totally unstained vegetable tanned cow hide for the first layer. This stuff is very light color but will darken a lot when the glue is added. It should end up close to the color of a dead oak leaf. It also will probably have a bit of a mottled appearance with some light blotches mixed in with the dark when it is finish sanded. Gives it sort of a more primitive/natural look than dyed leather.
-
Nice Dave.
-
Dave is that a scraper in the pics?? If so where did you get it?.... Terry
-
Terry, yes that's a scraper. I made it from scrap stainless when I worked at Delta. I made a bunch of them and gave them away at mojam. I might have another one laying around if you are interested. I was trying for something that would work well around pin knots, bumps and in low spots. Just put four different radius's on the corners with the last corner kinda making a gradual curve all the way around. Works real well for me and fits in a shirt pocket.
But anyway, here is skiving the first layer down with my knife. It needs to be shaving sharp to do a good job.
Here is after rough skiving and ready for glue.
And here is how it darkens up with the glue.
This next one is just the leather for the second layer. I've always figured that soft leather won't work for this but I'm gonna try it anyway. It can always be rasped off. The dark brown should make a nice accent stripe.
And here is after glueing it on, skiving and saturating like the first layer. Looks kinda pukey but it ain't done yet.
That's all I have loaded right now but there are several more steps and one more layer of leather for the back overlay. I may take some shortcuts on the shelves because the process is the same. Been gimping along on the 'puter trying to load these pics since about 9:00am and it's 5:00pm now. I'm getting hungry.
-
That's looking very nice.... Your patience with the dial up connection is appreciated... Terry
-
Dang it! I deleted some of the pictures I didn't want to so I could load the next batch into my computer from the camera. Oh well, the finished overlay will show up in the pics of the shelves.
-
Here is a side view of the finished overlay and the start of the two shelves laying on the bench.
If you squeeze the two pieces together between your fingers and cut the two at once, you end up with two mirror opposites like this.
Or you can clamp the two pieces in a small C-clamp while triming like this.
-
Okay, here is a shot of the back so you can see both pieces glued in place and roughly skived to shape. You can also see the back overlay after the third layer was added. Got a little close with the camera on this one so it's kinda blurry.
And here is one shelf saturated with glue, the flat filed smooth and retreated with glue for the next layer. I decided to do this to try to get a crisper line between the two layers since the second layer is real soft stuff almost like buckskin and if I left the first layer rough the line would be rough.
Almost there....three layers total, one side skived roughly to shape and on the other side the third layer needs to be trimmed.
After triming it looks like this. Just need to flatten the shelves, finish sand it down to 2400 grit and it will shine like glass. You can see the mottled look I was talking about in the begining on that back overlay. I kinda like it that way. It should look neat next to the gar skins and if there is any space between, there should be some contrast with the wood once it darkens.
By the way, the corved side of the 4 in 1 rasp is about perfect for the shelf contour. It allowed me to get the same contour on both shelves which would be difficult to do free hand with a knife and sandpaper.
Here it is all done. It's shaped and sanded smooth then polished with the 2400 grit micromesh.

:bigsmyl: Gotta Love it..... Nice job.... Terry
-
Very nice Dave.
-
Thanks George. Is that closer to what you had in mind? Now it just needs the wrap and shelf/strike plates.
I cut out some pieces of vegetable tanned horse hide for that. It's the same piece of leather used to make cordovan but not the same tanning process. It's pretty slick but not quite like the real cordovan stuff. The thickness is just right for strike plates. There will be a full set of left and right shelf and strike plates plus two spare strike plates in the tube when I send it on. Here's a pic of the strike plate just laying in place.
And just for gee whiz, here's a pic of my son Emmett holding the bow. He'll get a kick out of being "on the internet".
-
Hey Emmett, that bow your holding is starting to look pretty good.
-
Howdy Emmit...
Nice work Dave  love those double shelves!
-
Emmett, you look pretty darn handsom holdin that bow ;) Nice job Dave.
-
Great looking bow and youngster!
-
:bigsmyl: Hi there Emmett..... :wavey: Hey guys Dave sent me a PM with a great thought for a bow name..Two actually "Spirit" or "St Judes Spirit Bow" I liked em as this bow does represent the spirit of Tradgang members at their best.... this bow has some good medicine thanks to all of you.... Terry
-
Dave, beautiful work. Do you normally apply finish over the overlays or protect them?
-
Cool! That one's coming along real good.
Dave,
The BBYBBH bow will be at your place next for the same treatment. Probably just the arrow shelves on that one though as the bamboo already brings it into line for the front of the grip.
Anyway have you talked with Tom L?
Mike
-
Bigriver, they don't need any finish but when you finish the bow I'd just go ahead and finish right over the top of them like they were just part of the wood. Might have to scuff sand them a tiny bit with about 400 or 600 grit but that's it.
Mike, I have not talked to Tom but I'm going to PM him my address today. What kind of colors am I looking at in that bow? I was thinking something dark to go with the horn and maybe an accent stripe of some kind like on the osage bow shelves.
Emmett says hi back to you all.
-
Don't know what happened to my post earlier but yes, the BBYBBH will be headed your way soon. You're gonna be impressed with it when you see it. I got your PM. There's a little bit of everything in this bow, color wise. I'll send along some burgundy leather for an accent or something. It'll go with the bloodwood lam.
Say hi to Emmett and great job on the osage bow!
-
Nice leather work Dave. That’s turning into an awful nice bow….
-
I've been watching this progress along and you guys are top notch for sure. What a cool idea.
-
Ya know, this bow kinda opened my eyes a bit. When I first ever got to handle a couple self bows, I was real impressed with the Torges style bows for comfort in the hand and often thought a straight grip bow uncomfortable but this bow feels real good in my hand. Maybe it's the nice rounded shape as opposed to some that get left a bit more square but whatever it is, I like it.
It also got me to wondering about limb design. I mean, I've been used to a bow having the bottom limb about an inch shorter (ala Torges again) and the center of the bow being between the center of the handle and the shelf. This bow is symetrically limbed and center of the bow is center of the handle. I know plenty of people build them that way so it's just a personal preference. But, just to be sure, George and I are gonna have to do some pow wowing before I send it on to Timo to make sure I got the shelves in the right spot. Since I wasn't familiar with the design, I just put them where the top of my hand ended up when I held the grip. They actually "feel" kinda low to me and for my size hand (about average width) it would be just like shooting off the knuckle which is what I intended since it is a self bow. I want to make sure they are right before I send it on so I don't have them where it will mess up how it shoots. If you give me a call tomorrow George, I'll give you some measurements and we'll know for sure. I'm pretty green when it comes to bow design and layout so I'll gladly defer to your opinion. Won't be any big deal to cut 'em off and put some new ones on higher or lower. But sorry, no more pictorials...
My 'puter is too slow to load pics of the same thing twice!
By the way, that's another advantage of the leather built up shelves. If you dont' like them, just whack them off and make some new ones. Can't do that when ya cut a sight window.
-
Dave arrow rest should be approx 1 1/2" above center of the bow.
-
Beautiful work Dave. I will finish over them, cant wait to get to it.
-
Hmmm, thanks for the info Mickey. I guess I might need to lower them about a 5/16 inch which is just about what George thought from the pictures. I'll probably do that tomorrow and get it off to Timo. I guess it shows that I'm the greenhorn on the team....
George, sorry I wasn't home when you called. I didn't know about my daughters orthodontist appointment until this morning.

Hey Team Osage, back from the T Sweat and glad to see much progress on the St J osage bow. Nice work on the leather overlay and shelves Dave. Like the lefty/righty approach. Sounds like its off to visit Timo and get some fish skin soon. I had a package waiting at home with real nice bow sock and string for the bow from Dano. Go team go!

Ok, I have to apologize for not geting back on here to update you guys. The bow is still here at the house. I've been working double shifts at work and being forced on the weekend too. Guess it's the summer rush since we make salad dressings and spices. Anyway, I still have to put the new shelves on but I will do my best to get that done by tomorrow. I'm also trying to come up with a new tube to ship the bow since the one it came in was a bit kinked in the middle. Evidently it's been that way a while since it has duct tape there but I can get a new one from work I think.
Hang in there Timo. I'll give you a holler when I send it out. Again, sorry for not updating. I haven't been able to get much done at all besides work but I'll get on it first chance.
-
Well, I got a new shipping tube today. Right now it's time for bed (just got homr from work) and I'll try to get the shelves on tomorrow.
-
The new shelves are on and I'm going to ship it out today. Gonna go to a mailing place and try to pick up some foam packing or bubble wrap first though.
I did the shelves exactly the same as the first time so it doesn't look any different except for the shelves are a tad lower down. I guess I eyeballed them pretty well because the pieces of leather that I had cut for the old shelves fit the new ones exactly perfect. Kinda suprised myself there. :D
-
Cool Dave. Did the other bow get there yet?
-
I jsut talked with Dave and the bamboo bow is there now and he is busy planning and doing the double shelf on it.
Cool!!!
Mike
-
Hey, you bamboo guys get off this thread!!!!!!!!!
Just kiddin Wingnut. Sounds like both bows are in progress to be done in time aplenty. Should be just about to fine to take to the woods - just about.
Real pretty arrows with splined self nocks!
Dave, hope you get some time off for good behavior and get to spend some of that OT money on hunting.
-
Got the bow today, in good shape.
Now...... just have to figure out were to stop the skins?
Does it matter what kind of overlay material I use? I really like buff horn, but can use whatever.
-
Buff horn sounds good to me Tim.
-
Timo, tips on her are narrow....put something strong on there. I was gonna email you (forgot) and offer to send some elk antler...still could if you want. But buff horn sounds good to me too.
-
Whatever you do at the handle end I will make work. Buf tips sounds just fine to me too. Go get em Timo! (Oh yeah, try a couple test shots too)
-
WOW seems like forever ago it when it came to my house now.
Buff tips sound good
be sure and post some pics Timo
-
I'll try to work on her a bit tomorrow night.
Gotta get the skins out and take a look see,at some of the "finer ones" .
She's a real nice lookin piece of wood.I luv them dark streaks in the yeller wood.
-
Buffalo tips would be tough as nails. Well, tough as buffalo nails anyway.
-
Had a bit of time, so did some work on the bow.
Worked the tip into submission, and filed me a flat spot to except the buff horn. This is water buff, and has some interesting grain sometimes.Did't take any pics of the process,as overlays have been covered numerous times here.
The leather handle overlays taper out to a point,so I tried to match the theme by bringing the tip overs to the same profile. next up is figuring the best way to stop the skins.......I have a template cut, but still ....Sturtevanting it?( pondering,thinking...you know?) ha
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Timotoad/general/tip.jpg)
-
Oh my, beautiful work Tim. Can't wait to see the rest.
-
Nice work TimO :bigsmyl: Sturtevant in training
-
YEA BABY!..Nice work Timo!

:bigsmyl: .... Terry

Washed Grass carp skin ready to apply.More here than one needs for one bow,so I trimmed it down before I layed the glue.
I have found that regular Tight Bond works just fine for these skins. It cleans up much easier, and sands cleaner.I apply a thin (watered down) coat to the bow, and then also to the skin.
After I lay the skins, they are in a mess,I use a small knife blade to arrange the scale overs, these are what gives these skins their pattern. It's takes lots of patience, but it's time well spent.
After the skins set a spell,I cut the access off.I leave about a half inch, for adjustments later.
Once the skins start to set, I use a very, very sharp knife to trim the sides close to finish. After that it's just a matter of babysitting them until they set for good.
That's all for now.I'll let them dry a couple days, and then do some trim work.
-
Wow!!!! That's goin' to be ONE GORGEOUS BOW!!! The buff horn really accents the skin pattern.
Gonna have to talk you outta some of those skins Timo.....seein' as how I haven't been able to get any myself. ;)
-
Looking great Timo!
What's the plan for the area between the skins and the overlays? Do the skins get kinda feathered out on both ends? I remember seeing one of your bows with the skins on it but don't remember how they ended. I do remember liking the transparency and how you could still see the color of the wood through the skin with just the scale pattern showing.
-
Well there is a problem with the transition area.I normally run the skins under the handle wrap, but since we aren't going that way on this bow, I had to come up with something else.
I stopped the skins short of Daves great leather work, and figured that feathering them out would work and look fine.....I ain't sure about it.
No pics for tonight, but I cleaned them up and tried to feather as planned. They might look ok once the finish is applied, but still I worry. So I took some black electrical tape and layed over the skin tapers, to see how that would look.I really feel like this would help that area in question, and give it another bit of appeal?
I'll take pics tomorrow night and post my idea, so we can get some imput. And if we decide to go that way, then someone else can step up and do a nice silk wrap with black.
-
Just in case the bow is ready for finish soon, I will be out of town turkey hunting until Sunday. It can be sent anytime after that for the finishing. Thanks.
-
What about a colorful thread wrap? Just a suggestion.
-
From the initial looks of the pics might need a couple decorative wraps? Down near the tips and at the handle, but another thought is a band of paint like a cresting in those areas.Would look real good in black.
-
I think the black electrical tape will be fine Timo. I'd be happy to add that for the group if you'd like......I'll just grab another roll of tape off the rig just in case. :D
-
Timo, did you shoot that carp?
From the length of those skins without head or tail fin it must have been a nice one.
-
Humm, I don't know about electrical tape, it may wanna shrink over time and cause other problems. A nice thread wrap, sounds good to me.
-
Dano... I think Tim was just going to use the tape to show how a wrap would look... :) Terry
-
I think a black wrap would look great, its gonna be my bow anyways. :) OOOOOORRRRRR you could use alternating white/black wraps in morse code and spell out "why-in-the-hell-am-I-alternating-these-threads-instead-of-just-using-black-fullstop"
LMAO.
Bow looks sweet boys. I am gonna like it.
-
Dano ya Ding Dong! :)
Got home early...(crappies biting ya know) and took some pics for ya to see what ya think.
I'm leaning to the black thread wrap on both ends. The pic shows(left to right) what the finished handle area would look like, with wraps...the tips (without wraps).... tips with wraps....and the finished bow with wraps..
Confusing? I hope it was for you Calvin.. :)
I have some fireline,in a dark color that would work great for this. It's not dark black like the tape, but will work fine.
what say yea?
-
Well now don't I feel stupid, as my ol buddy Forest would say, "Stupid is as stupid does" :bigsmyl:
"Dano ya Ding Dong!" I resemble that remark  :D
-
Thread wrap would look nice Tim.
Dano..... :knothead:
-
I second the thread wrap..... Terry
-
Calvin.....don't count your flyin' pigs before they hatch!!!
BTW.....where you been boy?
-
Could do a wrap with watever fancy leather I use on the handle at the ends of the skins. Just brainstorming, but should the wraps, thread, leather or elec tape go on after the finish?
-
roc...working to save dough to pay for my new bow..hey! that rhymes! :)
-
I think I kinda like the ends natural myself. I think that when the wood darkens with age the contrast will dissipate a lot and the bow will have a very nice natural brown camo effect. The tape just catches my eye too quick. I guess it's a pet peeve of mine since I have to use tie on tree steps where I hunt and them danged black nylon straps show up from as far away as you can see the tree. If it had to be wrapped, I'd tend to go with a more muted color like olive, brown, rust etc. but I'm trying to picture the bow after a year or two of darkening.
Shaun, don't know about using leather out on the limb....
As for thread, I'd expect it would be best to put it on before finishing so that it finishes over smooth kinda like a fishing pole.
-
Timo - just thinking on a future project of mine... How transparent are the skins? Ya think one of my goofy dye jobs would show through very well?
-
Tom, The bow of Timo's that I saw had VERY transparent skins on it. The areas that made up the middle of the scales were nearly clear and as I remember it, you could actually see the wood through the skins. Of course it's been quite a while but I definitely remember liking how I could see the wood under the skins.
-
Well, I got a bit of time today, and decided it was time to get this thing done.
I talked with Mickey last night, and had made the choice of black thread...well I got to thinkin today, and liked Daves idea of maybe a brown. So I did one of each. I went with the brown.I think they blend better with the leather work.
I left the tips natural,as I had a good transition in that area. The finish should make them melt in.
Big River,I'll send ya a PM and you can send your addy.
Tom, never put skins over a dyed bow,but I'm sure it would work. Not sure about how well the skins will show up.
-
Nice job Tim, I did kinda like the electrical tape tho :bigsmyl:
-
Very nice Timo, good job. The brown blends in very well. Going to be a beaut.
-
Excellent job Tim! That brown looks like a perftct match with the leather.
By the way, the BBY is 99% done. I hope to get it in the mail to you either tomorrow or Tuesday.
-
Timo treats me just like Dianne..asks for my opinion then does just the opposite :saywhat:
Good thing too...the brown is PERFECT!
Nice job Timo  :notworthy: that is some special bow!
-
Sorry Mickey! :)
I got her packed up and ready for Big River.
-
Timo,
I got your email & returned one. I will call you today for the details.
-
it's ok Timo...I'm used to it :knothead:
-
I am sure looking forward to seeing this stick in the flesh. It left here as a stave and is going full circle, touched by so many artful craftsmen! The carp skin back looks like a million $ Timo.
Better start ordering some wild leathers for handle choices. Care to rule out, ooops I mean suggest any Mickey? The brown wrap does look real nice.
-
I ALWAY love tanned elkskin for handles and you can get it in brown or yellow :bigsmyl:
but feel free to ignore that Shaun.
Hey man this all started with your stave! :notworthy:
-
I left town for a couple of days and come back to see this.... Man you guys have done a fantastic job..... This years auction is shaping up to be the best yet Thanks to the sites best bowyers.... :campfire: :archer: Terry
-
Timo...the brown looks good.
And Mickey we will talk later.
-
:bigsmyl: ..... Hi Dianne..... :wavey: Terry
-
Dang you guys have done awesome!! Gotta second ya Terry, this is gonna be a great Auction!
Tim, send me a bucket a those crappies please n ya could even throw a sack of morels if ya got one handy :D
-
Bigriver, you should be getting an envelope in the mail any day now with the rest and shelf leathers. If you have something else you like better, feel free to use it, you won't hurt my feelings any.
Terry, you have an envelope headed your way too.
-
Daaaaaaaang Timo....you certainly got the skin process down. Looks fantastic. So, you think the earth would stop rotation if I fish skinned a glass bow? :bigsmyl:
-
Thanks Dave... Looking forward to giving that scraper a workout.... Terry
-
JC, I think it would work fine, just needs to have a lighter colored wood underneath.
-
timo, no bow yet.
-
I was wrong, bow came today. Mailguy put it in the dog kennel? Good thing I had no dog in there.
I have done a little fine sanding & have decided to do clear on the finish. I think with the leather overlays & the super glue combined with the brown wrap it will look a little busy if I stain up to the wraps. Hope it`s ok . My sealer will give it more amber cast & will warm it up & show off that osage glow. I feel I`m cheating a little with the hard work already done, but I hope it helps the cause. She`ll be purty for sure. Nice work to all. Pics will follow the process, but be warned, watching a finisher work is akin to watching paint dry :bigsmyl:
Bigriver
-
Here is the bow so far. I have the areas above the wrap stained & sealed. I need some input. Do you all like it with the contrast of the natural osage around the handle, or should I make it all look the same amber color. I basically dyed my tung oil sealer with analine dye to give the osage an antique look. I will wait to proceed with the finish until I get some feedback. Just an fyi the pics dont show how the stain really looks. It is really cool, honest. I am not sold on my camera. Thanks to my assistant/ daughter, Nicole, the bow holder.

Brian....I really like the contrast you have going there... I vote to keep it that way...Good job by your beautiful assistant... Terry
-
VERY nice. The contrast looks great, good job.
-
I like it!!! :bigsmyl:
-
It shall be done, more pics to follow. Wow ,it is intimidating working on such a masterpiece, the craftman around here are awesome. What a fine looking weapon.
-
Ok guys, so what's prettier the bow or the bow model?
:D
-
Brian's daughter is way prettier, but it's all about the bow Mike  :bigsmyl:
-
Smile reminds me of a good tiller at full draw. Bow looks great too. Keep up the good work Brian.
-
Wow...you guys amaze me!!! :notworthy: :notworthy:
-
The daughter is prettier, And I have another just like her. The boys see me cleaning weapons & sharpening knives a lot. :bigsmyl:
-
The bow looks good Brian....
I have a couple of them girls also......I know how ya feel.
-
I have put a few coats of gloss finish on the handle section. This bow is nice to finish because it has the thread wrap as a cutoff point. It`s much harder to finish the one piece bows, handleing is always an issue. I will just finish the mid section & tape off the area & finish the limbs.
A little tip I have learned is to wrap the tape backwards real tight first, rather than sticky side down. I learned the hard way years ago, if the finish is not cured yet the high tack tape will remove layers of finish, not good. I also use that method to tape off leather handles when I refinish bows, so as to not rip the smooth softer leather apart.
I am using gloss as my base coats to give the bow nice depth, it is a catalyzed varnish sprayed with an airbrush. coupla coats & then a switch to satin. A few more coats of that & we`ll rub her down with rottenstone & oil. Then the finishing wax & she `ll look showroom. More pics later.

Dang that's a perty thing!
-
Nice work Brian, great tip on the masking tape.
-
Brian, looks great bud! I was wondering how the skins would look after finish, near the tips.Wasn't sure that the skins would flow into the limb or not? They look pretty well.
Could you get a close up of that area for future reference?
-
Great job Brian, she's lookin real purty.
-
Timo, the tips done that way imo look awesome. I have more pics if you need them. Got the satin coats on the limbs, wont be long now. Should be ready to ship by mid week.

that thing will fit right in with the rest of my bows, thanks for the efforts guys. :)
-
LImbs are sprayed with satin & the handle is still gloss.
Shows a big difference in look, no? Next pic is the handle sprayed in satin.
I have the bow done. I will take some final pics & post them, though I am finding out it is harder to take pics that do this bow justice, than to actually do the dang finishing.
-
Very sweet Brian! You did us all proud son!
-
Is that nice or what! She's lookin like the finest selfbow ever.
-
WOW... That's an eyepopper for sure... Terry
-
I swear...what a beautiful bow! Nice job Brian.
PS your lab wants to play .....
-
Like a kid a Christmas waiting to see what has become of the stick that left here a couple months back. Waiting to have it in hand for handle inspiration.
Then I plan to take some really fuzzy pics and write a "damning by faint praise" description for the auction to try to hold the bidding down to something I can afford. Oh well, at least I will get to rest my eyes on it till some lucky and generous bidder claims it this St Judes Auction season.
-
Shaun are you doing the inscritption work on it too?
Did we ever come up with a name for the bow?
-
Well, my last series of pics. Again, what a lousy photographer, I tried. The bow is as fine looking a weapon as I have ever seen. I have not seen a lot of selfbows, but I have to believe this one is tops. Some day I would like to shoot one of this caliber, it sure wont be one I made. Thanks for the honor of doing some work on it. It was a hoot, hope it raises lots of money for the kids.
Next post I will describe how I acheived the finish, it sure aint rocket science. For most of you guys i`m sure it is old news, maybe it will help an aspiring bowyer complete his task.
I am going to let it dry in my shop real good, should be shipped to Shaun by Wed or Thursday.

Here is my process to acheive the finish . There are lots of methods, but I like this one for all wood bows. It combines the filling of the grain completely, durability of finish & that depth that only osage seems to have. I would love to finish a house with osage trim, THAT would be cool :bigsmyl:
1- Final fine sand with 600 grid wet/dry paper.
2- Clean off with denatured alcohol. Use that to check for sander marks & such (there were none!)
3- Two coats of truoil dyed with Alcoholdye stain, applied with the trusty finger. Make sure you get the finish smooth, even & fill the grain as good as possible. Pay attention to the string grooves, tips & edges. Light sand & tack rag between coats.
4- One light coat of clear shellac for a sealer. You can get this in a spray can, but I like to use the airbrush better. Shellac sticks to any finish & can be topcoated with anything. I buff it out after dry with steel wool. Tack rag it off real good after this
5- I then applied 3 coats of gloss Sherwin William catalyzed varnish, light sanding with a 3m fine sanding sponge(sooo handy) & tack rag between coats. I also use a small haidryer to speed up the set up process. It give dust less a chance to settle on the finish. I basically heat the finish up until it sets & let the cats then air dry. I do this on all coats except stain.
6- Repeat step 5 with satin SW catalyzed varnish.
7- It could be called good at this point, but I love this next step. I hand rub rottenstone powder(3fff) & baby oil with a soft cloth to remove any imperfections in the finish, wipe it down with a soft cloth after your done.
8- Next & final step, I heat up briwax or minwax finishing wax & apply it sparingly. I then heat up the wax on the bow a little to dry & let it penetrate the surface. Buff it out with a soft cloth. NOW she glows.
The whole process is harder to write than to do, expecially for a hunt & peck typer guy.

Mickey, my penmanship... legible but not prety. I had Marsha do my ABC bow and it looks great. If the Gang can come up with a name, I'll get her to do the pen work.
Brain, that finish looks like a diamond to me. Dang thing is gonna be too nice to hunt - well, maybe not for us die hards. Let the winning bidder put the first scratches on it.
-
You guys are something else that's all I can say. Wow, it would be tough to take that bow through the brush. Great job. Chad
-
Enjoyed watching all of you merge your talents and add a little piece of yourselves to this project.
You fellers have done a great job on this bow.
Brian, I noticed you used a conversion varnish from SW. Have you used Thunderbird, and if so how would you compare the two?
-
 x100, y'all!
-
John, I guess I use SW because they are my major supplier & it`s easy for me to get the Kemvar. It dries fast & is nice & durable, providing it is catalyzed right. The Tbird I would have to order & it would pain me to pay so much for a quart of finish. I use thousands of gallons of finish a year, the cost for a quart would bug me. I have heard really good things about the tbird, I`ve just not used it.
-
John,
If I can add to that answer, I've used both products for bows and found the TBird lacking when it came to ease of application and the appearance of the final product day in and day out. SW is much easier to handle and if mixed right, will produce as good if not better finish then TBird with half the fuss.
IMHO
Mike
-
I'd also like to add that it's been cool watching the love and care that have been going into both of these bows. Whoever wins them may be out some money but they will be the lucky ones.
-
OUTSTANDING WORK!!! That bow looks like it glows.
Brian, did you have any problems finishing over the super glue? Also, I was wondering if you ever recieve the package (parts) I sent to you? Should have got about a week ago.
-
Dave, no probs on the finish over the leatherwork, neat stuff. I sent the leather to Shaun, I`m too chicken to put it on :bigsmyl:
The bow is on it`s way as of 9:00 am today, should arrive by Shaun by the weekend.
-
Special delivery just arrived! It met Dano's donation which fit for perfect fistmile brace hight with no adjusting.
Lovely tricolor FF string and earthtone bow sock came together just so. Nice, Dano!
I got some ideas for handle wrap and will start work this weekend when my mind is cleared from gainful employment.
What a treat to see the work of so many done for so little - little kids that is.
Oh yeah, she's 58@28 and shoots good!!!!
-
You lucky dog, getting to shoot that baby is a real treat. Man I'm glad that string fit :bigsmyl:
BTW since I don't sew, Glenda, Eric Krewson's wife provided the bow socks.
-
Glad it got there in one piece, usps is fast!
-
WE need to add Glenda Krewson to the contributors list when it is inscribed
Shaun.. I think it would be a good idea to put the abbreviation for the state behind everyones name so anyone can see the journey that the bow has made...example:
Terry Petko AZ
Terry Uselton TX
Shaun Webb IL
Mickey Lotz OH
George Nagel MN
Dave Bulla MO
Tim Ott MO
Brian Halsted WI
Daniel Gren IL
Glenda Krewson AL
Nick Theodoratos IN
David Kretchmar NH
plus whoever is the lucky namer
(hope I didn't leave anyone out..if so please forgive me..going by memory here)

ttt for Shaun....

Yea Shaun....waitin' on you buddy! :bigsmyl: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Just arrived in the mail today. 20 guesses...
More in a day or so.
-
Hmmm, big birds boot top?
Looks like ostrich leg to me based on some cowboy boots I've seen. Also looks like a great color match for the bow!
-
SWEET, gonna be a dandy.
-
First guess a WINNER! Yep, the hide of an ostrich leg. Photo shows how shinny it is will have to get a matt finish on it to blend, but the color goes with the wraps and such. Will have to do a mock up and see if it works. Thinking a Krewsin glue type fitting rather than stitching.
Storm claim work has me making hay while the sun shines and I want to be able to focus when I work on this. It was a lot easier putting the stave in the mail than working on a finish item on such a work of art. No pressure...
-
That's gonna look Awesome Shaun..... I can't wait... Terry
-
Yup, that color is going to look sharp for sure!

Handle in place, all done but the scribbling. Have to wait for my caligrapher to return from her cruise in the Carabian next week and for the pannel to pick a name for the bow.
Could not bear to cover all of Dave's fine work on the leather rests and overlays, so I kept the handle small and let them peek out.
Was a little worried that this handle material might be too gaudy, but it blended in fine.
Centered the big scales on the belly since there is not much decoration on the shooter side of the bow.
And used small pieces for the arrow strikes.
Hope you like it. I know I'll be bidding!
-
Awesome Shaun, excellent workmanship bud. She's a real looker...now for the name.
-
:bigsmyl:
-
Oooout-standdddddding!!!
-
Shaun, very nice!
-
It doesn't get any better than that..... You all have done amazing work on this bow... :notworthy: Terry
-
Man! These bows just get cooler and cooler! The side view of the handle looks like some ancient reptile is waking up to see what's going on.
-
Wow and double wow!!!
I absolutely love that leather color and pattern. I like the way you followed the pattern lines on the belly side when you cut the leather to length. That side view of the shelf really does look like a reptile eye half open like Tom said too. Pretty cool.
Ya done good Shaun!
-
I have a strong feeling some records are going to be broken this year for the St. Jude's auction...yet another amazing selfbow :readit:
-
Hey didn't someone make some armgurads to go with these bows? Roughcountry maybe. Need to include his name on the bow too.
How come no one reminded me?
-
Check with Wingnut, when I visited this winter, I think he said he had both sets of leathers for the bows at his house.
-

-
Man is this ever coming together nice.... Terry
-
And I'm getting ready to start putting the knife together. Got the blade from Chad at Helle knives, and some handle material from Tuselton. Just got to get it laid out and put together.
That bow is just flat out unbelievable. All you guys are something else.
-
Dang! I forgot to play the lottery over the weekend.
-
"Faith 2006" plus name of all the bowyers on the bow.
Cetificate with all contibutors bowyers, fletcher, leather & knife workers to go with the set. Sound about right?
-
Sounds great Shaun.... Terry
-
Ok Guys.... Tradgang has agreed to archive the pics of this buildalong on their server all we need is for everyone who participated and posted pics to agree to let us do that.....Terry
-
No prob I'm down with it!
(did I sound young and hip?)
-
I'm in. Shaun

I think that's 50's hip John :bigsmyl:
-
I think your dating yourself :saywhat:

I'll have to ask my mom about that. Oh wait, she was a 60's child. I'll ask my wife's grandma...she might know.
