Well after picking a few of your collective brains, I decided to try my first Tri-Lam bow. I went with Raw Bamboo Back, Bamboo Flooring Belly slat of .25", and the cream in the middle of the Oreo is a .20" slat of Purpleheart. I just glued it up an hour ago. She will be 62-63" NTN and is glued up in a R/D Profile. It also has asymetrical limbs. I glued it up on a board form like Dean shows in his video. I have the Center on a 2.75" post, Midlimbs on a 2" post, and Tips on a 6" post. If she turns out to be a shooter and make weight, I will be escorting her Black Bear hunting in a couple of months. I am not doing a build along, but I will keep you posted as to how she turns out along the way. I learned a few things so far I thought I would pass along:
1. Mix up more glue than you think you will need. There are 4 glueing surfaces as opposed to two on a regular BB Bow. I learned to mix real fast. Don't ask how many times I mixed glue!!!! :scared: BTW, I need to build a plane body for my toothing plane blade; my arms and hands are worn out from prepping 4 surfaces while holding the blade by hand. :help:
Thanks,
Brian

Looking forward to your progress & the finished product Brian.
Now go to bed. Tomorrow's a big day! I'll be praying for you in the morning.
-
Well she is off the form and looking good. Well actually she looks ugly, but that is to be expected with all the Urac boogers on her. I hope to get a riser section glued on today and try to cut her to shape tomorrow or teusday. Resting her on a flat surface, she has .75" of a gap between the center point of the grip belly and the flat surface. She is touching the surface at mid limb, and the belly of the limb tips are 4.25" off of the flat surface. If she tillers out well, and if she holds together, she ought ot be a Smoking fast early draw weight honey. I want to cut her out to profile NOW, and clean up the boogers, but I need to have patience.
Any sugestions for riser material? I was thinking of going with Purpleheart to match the limb core, but I might go with a few differnt laminations.
So far so good!!!
-
yowser, that's a lot of bending
Pics!
-
That is why I destroyed that perfectly good slat of Bulletwood. I learned I have to do more thinner laminations to get that much bend.
I think she will tiller and shoot out with the tips about 2-2.5" in front of the center of the riser. I sure hope she makes weight!!! I don't want to be labled a "LUKE"! LOL!!!
How are you buddy?
-
Ouch! :bigsmyl:
I'm doing pretty good, been doing a lot of bow work lately. A few board bows, and a lot more osage. :) How about yourself?
-
This is my first Bow since moving north. I was just out cutting out the profile past where the riser will be glued on. I also cleaned up all the boogers and am getting ready to cut and sand the riser piece for glueup. I hope to have it clamped before church. If not, I guess I will have do it before I get to bed tonight. I want to sart tillering by tomorrow night!!!!! It is P R E T T Y!!!! It might explode, so I better take pics of it before I tiller, er, I mean destroy it.
-
"It also has asymetrical limbs"
Hi Brian, Does the above comment refer to the upper limb being longer than the bottom?
Hope she turns out. I've yet to try the RD design...have tried the tri-lam in Reflex and it came out nice. Lots of fun. Hope the rest goes smoothly for you. Swanny
-
Make that it did have Asymetrical limbs!!!! Yes that is what it meant, but somehow some bonehead forgot to put the end post out far enough on on that end, so I cut 1 inch off the top and have symetrical limbs now and even tip lift or reflex.
Good to hear from you Ken. Are you all still out west? If you get up here again stop by and say hi.
-
"Are you all still out west? If you get up here again stop by and say hi."
Did get out West this past summer and fall...the Lord had other ideas... Lyme loves high altitude (low pressure/low oxy levels) so my immune system crashed....had to come back to the East after three months to recover. Now living part of my life in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber I built with good results.
Am thinking about getting up to your neck of the woods sometime when the cash flow recovers, DV. Miss my friends dearly. Will stop by if I do.
Post some pics of your project if you can.

Yeah, Pictures!!
-
I still haven't got the riser cut and prepped for glue up. I will get it done tonight.
I will take the hint and get a few pics as well.
-
I finally got the riser pieces prepared and have them clamped to the bow right now. I hope to cut it to shape tomorrow and get a string on it. I used a piece of Cherry next to the Bamboo Flooring belly, and a Piece of Purpleheart on the belly of the Cherry.
I promise pictures by tomorrow night!!!!!
-
Brian,
Where the heck are the pics????
I'm a patient man but this is too much...
being a religious man how can you do this to your fellow archers???
Sorry could not resist :bigsmyl:
-
Patience my friend!!!! After your deer season this year, I would have thought you would have learned that virtue. LOL!!
PICS COMING TOMORROW. Tomorrow is the day after today. Don't be emailing me at 12:01AM asking where they are either.
Say hi to my old friend for me will you?
-
Today is close enough to tomorrow. Where's the PICS???
-
Little Fred,
I fianlly got your package in the mail today. Sorry about the delay. I have her cooking suspended over a Kerosene heater in the garage. I want to take the clamps off and clean her up, but I better wait until tomorrow. Hows the Osage?
-
no problem with the delay. No rush.
Haven't had much time to work on the osage lately, I was just at a 3 day winter camp. Hopefully when things calm down a bit I'll be back at work.
-
Is it tomorrow yet?
-
It's getting close to being the day after yesterdays tomorrow :readit:

I barely made it. It's not tomorrow HERE yet!!
-
I hope to get a chance to do some tillering tomorrow. In retrospect, I wish I would have used the purpleheart and cherry riser pieces in reverse, with the purpleheart glued to the belly. Oh well, if she shoots well, I can overlook a cosmetic design flaw. LOL!!
-
looks good to me. Just go slow on your tillering.
start at the fades and work your way out. I didnt read the whole thread, so you maybe a expert and im telling you something you already knwo if so, just ignore me. Good luck none the less, I really love making these tri-lam deflex/reflex bows. great sweet shooters with good cast, and reliability!
chris.
-
She's sure purty Brian!!!!!
-
I'm gonna have to disagree with starting at the fades. It's already bending there and it's easier for me to tiller if I get the rest of the bow caught up first. I started at the fades on my first r/d and it ended up being a kids bow...only one that's come in under weight.
Clint
-
Thanks guys. I don't think I will have any trouble with this one becoming a kids bow. It might become another man's bow if it doesn't make the heavy weight I am wanting , but I would have to remove the whole layer of Bamboo Flooring to go that light. LOL!!!
I think I am going to stay away from the fades until I get the mid limb moving where I want it. I will let you know how she is turning out when I get some time to work on her some more.
-
Its has a very nice shape to it, how long is your handle? Also as mentioned earlier, be very carefull working your fade areas, midlimb is where you'll be concentrating on must, it's a challenge to get the reflex smoothed out on this type of bow.
Joe Don
-
The riser is 10" Fade to Fade. Would trapping the middle third of the belly on each limb be a good idea as a start in tillerring?
-
I trap all my bows first then concentrate on tillering the belly, the main reason I trap from bamboo to the belly is to relieve some stress that bamboo has on most belly wood, by doing this your belly wood will be working at a better ratio than having your bamboo over power its use.
Joe Don
-
Good lookin piece of work, reckon ya could do that type of bow with hickory?
-
Sure can Kenny. Either as a belly or backing. Makes a great bow if kept dry.
-
The tillering is coming along well. I only got a chance to work a little on her today. I hope to get a few minutes tomorrow to do some scraping and take some more pics.
-
Fancy profile and wood combo.
looking forward to follow the development of this Brian.

Well as most things I build for myself, before I get them close to being done, someone else wants it, so alas it will not be mine!!!! It is going to shoot in at about 49#@28" and is a SWEET shooter at that. Here are a few almost finished pictures. I still have to finish sand and finish shaping the handle. I might deepen the arrow pass a little bit more as well. I also still have to put on tip overlalys and shape the nock ends. Here she is in her current conditon.

Caster, that is going to be a VERY nice bow. Lucky fellow. If ya would come to Iowa I could shoot it and you could take home a deer with real antlers instead of that wooden fellow on the first picture. I want to see it all polished!
-
My wife and I saw that DEER in a craft shop in Amish country in Ohio a few years ago. Everytime I walked past it, I broke out in a belly laugh. She had her mom pick it up for me as a Christmas present when they went there for a visit. I bet I laughed for 30 minutes straight when I opened it Christmas morning a few years ago!!! If I get to Iowa, you can bet on me stopping by for some of Ma's fried Chicken. Thanks for the compliments by the way. Did you want to see the bow all polished up, or the buck after he rubbed that barklike velvet off and got those (horns) all polished up???
-
The bow, of course!
-
wow, Brian, you shouldn't have. :D . And at just the weight I'm looking for too!
-
Luke,
I didn't tiller it to 30"!!!!!!! You got my package yet??
-
if need be, I can shrink :)
Not yet. :( I think our mail service just quit delivering to me. I've been waiting a package from the states for over 3 weeks! :(
-
I just got a bow from the States that was in transit for 4 weeks!!! Not only that but Canada Post managed to destroy the box. Luckily the Bow was wrapped well inside. I think you would enjoy building these Luke. If you decide to give them a go, I would be happy to loan you the Torges Video.
-
I'm certainly thinking about it. Once I finish all the projects I'm workign on right now, I think I'll give it a shot. :) Thanks for the offer on the movie, I might take you up on that.
-
Next time I send you a package, I will put it inside.
-
Here are a few more pics of her almost finished. She still needs a few more coats of finish and a leather grip added. She is a nice shooter and easy on the eye. Let me know what you think.

Caster, she is a real beauty!!! I'd be proud to shoot it for you. you did good. You are truly blessed.
-
Thank you sir. When I get her all polished up, I will post a few more pics.
-
That's beautiful Brian!
Get the window dressing on & it will be the frosting on the cake.
-
The bow is a beauty, but what I want to see is some more pictures of that "shoulder mount" over the doorway. That thing is a hoot. Want to make one for myself.
-
Ask and you shall recieve.
I ought to make this guy my avitar image!! LOL!!
-
Caster, your in box was full couldn't leave a reply. I'd be curious about those pics.
-
Billy,
Thanks for letting me know. I just deleted a bunch. I will email some pics to you.
Brian
-
She's a real beauty!
That "mount" is a riot!
-
Love the bow. And especially the avatar :bigsmyl:
-
Looks veddy nice, Brian. Is it possible to see a pic at full draw? Want to see what the RD looks like compared to just R since I've never done one.
-
Thanks guys.
Ken,
I will never divulge my perfect tiller pics!!! LOL!!! Actually, I don't have a tree, so getting that kind of pic is tough for me. If you want to see what they are (supposed) to look like, as Wingnut for a full draw pic. I am sure his would be correct. Thanks for the compliment by the way.
Luke,
I had a feeling you would like that picture.
-
Hey Brian, did you get my email about the Cheetah?
-
Yes, but I can't find his contact info.
-
OK. I guess that at least that means you know who I'm talking about. That's a screaming deal & I hate to see him miss it.
-
Thanks Brian.
Think I found him. I believe it was "Ontario Longbow". Frank.
I emailed him.
-
Here is part of the force draw curve for her.
48.5#@29"
46#@28"
44#@27"
42#@26"
I shot a 470 grain arrow (10.2 grains per pound)with finger release and Beaver Balls on the string at 170 FPS. Average of 3 shots with a person at the side checking the draw was exact 28". Probably won't win any speed contests with a modern glass bow, but it is fast by my Standards.
She is a pleasure to shoot. I shot DART leaague with her last night, and really enjoyed shooting her.
She is 60.5" NTN Strung and likes a 6.25" Brace.
The reflex at the tips is only 1/2" past the front of the grip when unstrung. I have put about 200 arrows thru her, so I think she is settled in where she will stay.
-
*insert full draw picture right...... here.*

Thanks Luke. What are you doing with the "frills" I sent you??
-
Beautiful job Brian!
I am impressed & inspired. You are obviously a multi talented guy.
-
A beauty!!
