I've looked everywhere in Alton, IL for a store to sell plastic map tubes. I found this plan on the web for a tube quiver and I need a map tube. I don't think a shipping tube would work as it is cardboard. First rain and it's toast--soggy toast.
Here is the plans that I found and want to make. Anyone have a 3-4" x 40" map tube that you want to sell to me?

That site belongs to James Wrenn, I believe. He is a member here. Try this link, and see if you can send him a PM. He is a great guy, and makes some really good stuff.

Cato,
All the link does is take me back to the home webpage of Tradgang

newhunter---check your archery shops that sell PSE equipment and ask for the arrow tubes that their Radial Weave arrows come in--plastic with rubber end caps---should be perfect for whtab you have in mind
-
I'm also interested in where to find those tubes. Checked all the local Staples, Office depot, etc. Nothing but cardboard. All I can find online for the clear plastics is from wholesalers with 25+ min quantities. - eric
-
How about thin walled PVC. It comes in 2", 3" and 4" diameter. Pat
-
I can pick up a map case at the marine supply store if you can't find one elsewhere. I think they run about $10... it's a bit ridiculous considering it's just a piece of plastic, but it does work well.
Here's mine:

It worked out so well I just bought the camo leather to make myself another!
-
The one I use is the one from boatersworld. You can order it online if there is not a store near you.Good luck with your quiver.I just made me a new one for this year.

The commercial version of what you blokes are making is the Simmons rota quiver.
Depends on whether you like building your own stuff or just want one. :D
-
Yup...I wan't one and want it cheaper than 80.00 or whatever simmons is charging.
Paul
-
The Simmons is a lot heavier and a lot slower to get arrows in and out of than these little homemade quivers. The rotary thing is one of those things that looks good on paper but is less than perfect when you take them to the woods. jmo
-
I want one and will find some plastic tubbing, but boatersworld wants 12.99 + 6.95 shipping. I'll pass on the plastic tube until I find one cheaper or free
-
I've made several of Mr. Wrenn's quivers too. i couldn't find any plastic tubes in my area either so i used cardboard tubes but covered them with two layers of good packing tape and haven't had any problems yet. i love em, super lite, super quiet...
-
Green Arrow,
now thats a good idea.

I make one from those same plans, thanks James. I love this type of quiver. I ended up using 4" schedule 30 PVC pipe. Its not to bad on weight but probably a map tube would be lighter. How did you guys attach the material to the tube? I had a hard time getting mine to glue to it.
Jeremy is that camo leather on the one in the picture? Looks great. Where do you find camo leather at?
-
I made one of these using 4" schedule 35 pvc (because it was free)and it is about as heavy as the one I made using 8oz. leather. I would suggest not using pvc and find a map case instead. My favoriye one now is one made with highnoonhunters design where you use a wood backing strip and just a cup on the bottom and a small strap on the top. You can use a hood or do like I did and make a tube for the top to protect your fletch, these are very light and very functional. Thank you very much "highnoonhunter". Or he sells them too!!

My Friend Kenny makes those. He has 6 or 7 made from PVC, Cardboard(waterproffed), ect. He attaches QD rifle swivels to them and snaps on a nylon rifle sling. They are pretty neat, but a little noisy.
-
I am a little late on this one but I get them for keeping my Blue prints safe when I have them at Office max and or Office Depot. They may cost more I dont know. They are called Document tubes or somthing like that and go for about $8.00 depending on size.
-
Try this company. They say they wil send yuo a sample. http://www.petropackaging.com/stocksize.cfm
-
Doug R, i used titebond to glue to bamboo blind to the tube, i've made four i think and all are holding up really well so far...
-
Doug R, the one in the pic is just camo fabric. I sewed it into the proper tube size and then just slipped it on. I bought a bunch of camo leather from http://www.brettunsvillage.com/leather/ It needs to be lined with some suede to stiffen up, but should look cool and be a little quieter than the plastic tube.
-
i have one made out of a old plastic flyrod tube and it worked good. and i also made one out of the long tubes that those beef sticks come it that you see in gas stations and conveinence stores. it was really tough plastic and they gave it to me.
-
I am glad you guys are having fun with these things.I have not used the match sticks on one since putting the plans out there. If you want to use pcv talk to a plumber about getting some schedule 10 drain piping. It is almost as light as the map tubes and will make a good quiver. The one I just finished weights less than two lbs so they don't have to be heavy. That is much lighter than my backquiver.I just use barge cement or a spray contact adhesive when glueing leather or cloth to the tube.A good way to reinforce the opening if useing light weight stuff is to take the left over piece of the tube and cut it into 1 1/2" strips.Turn them backwards from the curl of the tube and glue them in the openning with super glue keeping it open with your clamps. It will stiffen up the tube and keep the opening wide. You material will cover it so you will not see it when done.

You can get a great tube by visiting a copy store that does or provides copies for house plans. I like the very thin clear plastic tubes and they usaully cost from 3 to 5 bucks.
-
check out the library store or anywhere you can find plans hardware. my stepmother use to carry her plans (she's an industrial drawer) in a case looking like your map tubes.
-
Where do you get the tape that goes around the opening?
Stan
-
currently(when not at baseball practice or work or working on other things) making one simular to this but using 4" light gauge PVC. I think I paid $4 or $5 for a 6 foot piece. may be a little bigger in dia than the plans call for, but should work out fine. Will post pics if I ever get caught up and finish it.

This project is on my To-Do list. Just haven't gotten motivated to pursue it yet. Maybe it's time to get with it.

try your local high school art department or a silkscreen printing shop as the film comes packed in plastic tubes of those dimensions with a screw on cap. I have gotten them before to use for my hysdo maps of fishing lakes and topos I hunt with. ...........Mac~

James Wren,
What is the length of the cut at the bottom of the opening?
I got two hard cardboard tubes that I cut 4" at the base of the opening. I think that's two much. Let me know would ya please.
Paul
-
The only way that can be too much is if it weakens your tube too much. The arrows can't come out and a big openning makes getting them in and out easier. It also makes picking a particular arrow if you are carring more than one type easier.Mine are 4".
-
The tubes that I got are card board tubes that I had around my classroom. Go figure. Anyway the first one I cut I made the tube to short. Couldn't get the arrows out if I had the end capped. So the next tube I cut I made it 36" long, cut the opening 4" from the bottom and 4" wide. The length of the opening is 14" long. I've got some plastic tubes coming in the mail so these will be my prototypes.

If you guy's like free stuff, go to your local window tinting shop and ask for the plastic tubes the tint comes rolled up on. They come in 18,20,22,24,and 36 inch lengths, and if they do houses/commercial they will have 48 in ect. I made mine using a modified version of James's plans. Used some leather suspenders I never use for the straps. You can use it either slanted like a back quiver or straight up with these suspenders. I covered mine with leftover camo tape from an ATV kit. has anyone tried to remove the inside of the simmons roto quiver and use it just like this?curios as if it could be done.never tried the roto quiver but looks interesting enuff.
-
Dumb question guys . . .do the arrows go in with the broadheads facing up or down?
-
Broadheads go down and the fletching is covered.
-
So the next question is - Is the top 'open' so you can load from there?
I guess I was thinking you may rub the fletching the wrong way feeding them from the bottom.
-
Ooops - never mind . . saw the plans
-
The plastic tube is very slick and does not seem to hurt the feathers any.The top on mine is closed.Loading is no problem at all and I built it for wet days so I don't want an open top.I am sure someone has built one that way.I have been amazed at how many people have found that site and built one.I have had emails from 11 different countries that someone was useing one of my quivers. :)I now see at least one at every 3d I go to as well.I am very happy that people can get some use out of it. :)

James...you should have patented this... :smileystooges:

Never try to mix money and fun. :)

Just moving this to the top so that others can add to it.

so nobody wanted to look up their local PSE dealer ? They are very light, very slick on the inside and have quiet rubber caps on both ends.I've given away dozens of these things from my shop, i'm sure your nearest could get you at least one for free but if you'd rather pay eight or ten dollars or use something heavier or not waterproof or less durable then .... ?
-
Joel,
I'm checking. Got two archery shops locally, but I'm not sure which one (if either) carries PSE.
I'm definitely a student of Van's School for Frugal Archers -- free is always better.
-
Go to Office Depot and get a drawing tube it is adjustable from 24" to 36" and it has a shoulder strap on it. I think they run around $8.00. The engineeers here use them when they goto the site. I'll see if I can get a picture of mine. But here is one like it alittle bit more money.

I recently bought a 24" map tube at mytopo.com for 4.95. I think they have other sizes as well and seem reasonably priced.

Joel,
While some members can go to the local shop...I am kind of limited. Tomorrow, I'm going to the glass shop my friend owns...they may have some plastic tubes for me. After that I'll be in Georgia and I'll look around there. I'm taking everything that everyone is saying and working with it. I've already gone on a plastic website and asked for two samples of different tubes. Don't know if I'll get them, but I'm not paying for them either way.

I made one out of black plastic pipe that you can purchase at Lowes or Home Depot. I used the 3" pipe and drew my opening out in pencil and then used a jig saw to cut it out then sanded the edges. I bought some camo paints at Wal-mart and did a mossy oak type pattern. Very durable and you can make several out of a 10' tube.
-
Well I got a tube from the glass shop my friend owns...its 36" long and 3" in diameter. I'm going to work on it this week while I'm in Georgia. Hopefully I won't screw things up.

Opps sorry for the double post...need to learn how to completely delete...
-
Paul, on mine I took the 36 inch tube and cut it in half at 24 inches, than cut a 2in piece out of the leftover (top cap). take the two inch piece and split it like a collar and glue 1in of it to the top piece. Now you can take the top on and off to load arrows from the top if you want. Now cap both ends as James does and cut your slot in the side. I used soft foam in the cap to keep arrows from rattling, but soft enough to lift arrows out of your slot when you need one.

Here's a couple I made years ago from James' instructions right after he put them on the web (I think he has them on his website :D ). I used them extensively deer hunting and they are great. The other quiver is one I made for a fellow Tradganger last year. I got my tubes from Tap Plastics online. They are more expensive, but they are the crushproof mailer tubes which I used before and thought they were well worth the extra $$.
