Title: What to do When Temp hits 113........ Sinew!!
Post by: AZStickman on June 04, 2006, 02:06:00 PM
I love it when we finally start getting our 110+ degree days here in AZ.... There's no better time for sinewing......The glue stays at a good working temp without any effort and sets up quick enough to allow easy blending and working of the sinew.... This bow is the Ferret Friendship bow I featured on this tillering build along....
"Ferret Friendship Bow: Finessing a Tiller" (http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=028784)
The Elk sinew I'm using was prepped in Javie camp a couple of years ago by Mike Westvang, Rusty Craine,George Nagel,Bobby Hunziger, and Mickey himself....these folks are true Compadres and made naming this bow easy.... Meet "Compadre"

I prepped the bow and am following the same process I've outlined on my site the Bowyers Workshop:
Bowyers Workshop: Sinewing a Bow (http://www.bowyersworkshop.com/sinew.html)

I applied the first course of sinew Yesterday and let it set overnight....
Here's a pic of me set up ready to apply the second and final course:

Here's a picture of the bow after the final course is applied.... I've feathered the sinew towards the tips allowing room for overlays and also toward the sides to allow for the rawhide backing I will apply in a couple of weeks to protect the sinew from moisture.Feathering the sinew to the sides and leaving a bit of wood to apply the rawhide edge to creates a seal for the sinew. Also note how the edges of the bow have been rounded off before sinewing. This is important as sharp edges will sometimes lift a splinter as the sinew shrinks:

In couple of weeks I will apply the rawhide backing. The bow will be in my garage during this time.... With temps here hitting 110 pretty much daily my garage becomes a natural heat box.... Arizona was made for sinew.....    :D    Terry

Holy Crap..when it hits 113 here. they close the schools , people board up the windows, pull down the shades and crank the AC on high and stay inside until the temp outside gets reasonable again,

Bow is looking good Terry. Love the name! How appropriate.

PS I think I see that pesky blade of grass coming up over in the corner again! ha ha

Hey Mickey, That's dry heat! LOL If it hits 90deg here we suffer!
Terry, I'm looking forward to seeing the final results. ...and yes, sinew bows were made for the west. I made a sinew backed hickory bow that lost almost 15# from winter til summer. Then I sent it to a friend in CO to play with and it gained back that 15# and another 10# to boot.     Pat

Pat.... I made a sinew bow for the St. Judes Auction a couple of years ago.... "La Corazon" (http://www.bowyersworkshop.com/lacorazon.htm)
As you can see I had it weighed in at 52# after letting the sinew set for two months.
George Nagel won the bidding and last time I talked to him he said it felt like it was pulling 70#...... I went with a little lighter sinew job on this bow..... initial target weight was between 40 and 45#.... I wound up down at 38# chasing tiller..... I really don't want to gain more than 10# on her..... We'll see.....    :)   Terry

Terry, Our winters here in the mountains of NC are quite dry but once summer hits the humidity can get very high. At least in AZ your humidity stays fairly low most of the time. It's that up and down humidity that kills the effects of the sinew.     Pat

Just had to respond here. It is 55 and raining here. Thinking about you down there in the heat.

I want to sinew a couple of bows soon, sounds like I should wait until July when it will be 95+ and 12% humidity.

Good info Terry thanks.

Terry...I really like the name "Compadre"...you have a special gift for coming up with bow names.

Me and my dial up have to snipe on the auction before the servers melt down.  Have fun!

Chad, 12% humidity? LOLOLOLOLOLOL

In the winter we get down to 40-45%..in the summer we hover between 75 and 90%

Wonder what 12% would feel like. Probably have to put water drops in my nose to keep it from bleeding LOL

George... That cooler weather and dry climate probably explains why La Corazon gained so much weight.... It was still in the 100's here and the sinew had been set up for a bit over 60 days when I weighed her last.... Terry

I sinewed a bow inducing about 2" reflex about 2 months ago. I put it inside on my broke-down chevy and forgot about it till about two weeks ago. That sucker is now holding about 5" of reflex and is quite intimidating for me, the tiller impared.  :scared:

Mickey, come on out in July or August and find out. We will hunt the elusive Yew that grows in cool damp stream bottoms.

Humidity below 15% and temps above 90 are not unusual here in Summer. It will dry a sandwich before you can eat it. Bow wood dries too quick and checking can be a problem. Sometimes it rains but never reaches the ground because the surface air is so dry.

Now is a good time of year for drying bow wood as the afternoon humidity is 30-40%.

I have 3 Yew staves that I cut about a month ago and they are drying quickly.

Terry, La Corazon is a prime example of what a long drying time, heat and low humidity will do to sinew. When I got her from you she was at 52#. I hung her on the wall for a few months and she gained 10# easy. The tiller is still fine and she is a perfect elk bow now.

Terry,
How many elk tendons did you use?
Title: Re: What to do When Temp hits 113........ Sinew!!
Post by: AZStickman on June 08, 2006, 02:39:00 PM
I'm not sure Chad......I had Mickey, George, Mike, Rusty and Bobby in javie camp a couple of years ago and I took a bunch of Elk sinew tendons with me for the guys to have.... I came back from hunting one morning and they had taken some of it and had it stripped ready to go.... I felt like Tom Sawyer and the whitewashed fence...   :D   I've been saving it for a special project.... I still have enough left over to do another bow... But to get the same coverage on bows I've done previously I would use 3 Elk leg tendons.... BTW... You haven't seen sinew stripped until you see Mickey do it.... We were all impressed....

George I'm glad you still like La Corazon.... I've been searching the net looking to see if I could get ya on that elephant hunt.... But until I get a rich uncle dying I think it's outta my league.....   :D   .... Terry

Well we've had a nice couple of weeks since I applied the sinew to the back of Compadre heck we even had some single digit humidity days and the temps have been averaging 110 or so..... Doesn't get any better than that for sinewing..... I started prepping the rawhide last night.. I'm trying something a bit different on this bow to give it character....We'll see how that turned out.... I've got things all set up and will be getting to it after breakfast..... Pics to follow..... Terry

Title: Re: What to do When Temp hits 113........ Sinew!!
Post by: AZStickman on June 18, 2006, 12:18:00 PM
Ok Here we go.....

The first order of business is to take care of some little pockets in the sinew backing....We will fill these in with sinew patches to avoid having air bubbles under our Rawhide backing.... Here's a pic of the pocket

First step is to lightly sand the sinew surface to get rid of pickers

Now we'll patch our pockets:

Here's our first look at the rawhide strips with the Valdes Patina: ( Linc donated the rawhide for another project I was doing a while back. I didn't use them for that one but I put them to good use here.... Thanks Linc.... Just another trad gang Compadre adding to this project)

I'll dry them with the shop towel then size the back of the bow and the hair side of the rawhide with hide glue.....

Now we're ready to start applying our rawhide.....
Title: Re: What to do When Temp hits 113........ Sinew!!
Post by: AZStickman on June 18, 2006, 12:29:00 PM
Now I'll clamp one end of the rawhide down:

and rough trim it using a fresh razor blade I'm leaving the rawhide wide enough to fold over the edges a bit we will finish the edges after everything has cured a couple of months from now:

Now I'm wrapping the rawhide with an ace bandage being careful to wrap the edges of the rawhide around the bow and not allowing it to slip to one side or the other:

Once I finish one limb I repeat the step on the other limb and wrap them with hemp twine:

Here's the finished pic..... I'll put Compadre to sleep now for a couple of months:

I'm really pleased with how the Valdes Patina turned out.... It gives the rawhide a real rich color and made it almost translucent.... At least when it was wet.... We'll see how it looks dried...... Terry

Note: Notice how I kept the bow tied down onto reflex throughout this procedure.... This is important..... If you were to untie it and apply the rawhide the moisture will relax your sinew and you never seem to gain back what you had even if you tie it back down after the rawhide is applied.

Title: Re: What to do When Temp hits 113........ Sinew!!
Post by: AZStickman on June 18, 2006, 05:44:00 PM
I thought you'd never ask Dano....   :bigsmyl:

The Valdes Patina is a home brewed dye named after the famous Juan Valdes.....Here's how I did it:

First you make up a hair curling batch of cowboy coffee:

Boil for 20 minutes:

Filter out the grounds:

Then allow to cool..... Once it's cooled down I soaked the rawhide strips over night to produce the color you see in the pics.....I like the way it turned out...... Terry

I didn't know for sure...was just guessing it was coffee.  I have seen my Mom do something similar with tea or pecan hulls for some of her quilting projects.

I had a small elk fix a couple of weeks ago too.  Darleen and I drove up to Big Lake.  We saw 4 Antelope, 14 deer  and 25-30 elk on the way up.   Right after sunset a bull let loose a little bugle from about 200 yards away from the lake.  It was music to my soul!      We came home about 2:00 AM.  As we came through Christopher Creek a big bull was standing in the right hand lane as we came around the corner.  Fortunately the road is divided there and we were in the left lane, cause he didn't budge.  He sure looked big.

I'm excited for you for your Colorado hunt.  You will have a blast I'm sure.

I got a little "auction item" in the mail Friday.  Waiting for the rest to come this next week.  What a beauty of a bow.  Maybe I'll be able to bring her by sometime this summer.

You're welcome Leo..... Bobby..... I'm starting to get into the natural dyes.... I have some red rock from a trip up north I'll be putting to use somewhere down the road and know I can come up with acorns this fall.... I wonder how they would do??....Well...... I'm heading out to catch a plane to Tecate' Mexico and will be working there the rest of the week..... I'll unwrap Compadre when I get back and then this project will be as exciting as watching sinew dry.....It takes longer than paint....   :D  Hasta Luego.... Terry

When the sinew is cured for a couple of months I'll take the bow off the reflex caul..... Trim the rawhide edges and check tiller..... It usually only takes some minor tiller adjustments at this stage..... Once that's done I'll do a bit of fussin to dress it up a bit ..... add a finish and get her sent to Mickey...... Terry

Looks like a real live hunting bow to me.

Glad ya like it bud..... I think it's safe to say I'll be using the Valdes Patina again.... The pics don't show it but it is actually a bit translucent in spots and you can see the sinew underneath.... Terry

I love these "how to" theads, and this one is one of the best! May be hot, but that is one cool looking bow!

Thanks AZstickman for taking the time to share.

Thanks Al..... I figure if I can show just one guy something new in one of these threads it's worth the time and effort in taking and posting the pics..... Terry

you've definitely helped me with my sinew job on the current bow i am doing... only problem is that I don't have the heat or low humidity in PA to dry it out as fast.

Shawn..... Drying out sinew is a pretty long process even in my climate you can expect it to keep changing for over a year.... The two month period I wait just gets it where I can finish the bow up..... I have noticed the more I shoot a sinew backed bow after I finish it up the less it seems to change tiller and weight in that first year......... Do you have a hot box??... Terry
