Title: R/D GBB. .A Rookie BUILDs ALONG. . . . Dryad Bows TIP PICS ADDED
Post by: wingnut on February 06, 2008, 07:22:00 PM
Well we got a lot of input from all of you and went back to the drawing board.  The tip build along was good but the grip was too complex and the heavy use of power tools intimidating.

OK, so here we go again.

First of all the tips stay that same, but the grip and window are now included when you get the bow.

Here is a profile look:

Side view of grip as it comes:

From the back:

The belly side:

We have a customer that came by today and I asked him to finish the bow out with a little instruction.  He said he'd do it and is out with Jason and Connie right now taking pics as he attacks the bow with only hand tools.

We'll follow his progress on this thread as time goes by.

Jason and Jason(Crash)Castle (volunteer) just came in after one hour of work.  The grip is done and ready for sanding.

I'll get Connie to download the pics so I can make em small enough for the web.

Next time he's over we'll do the tips.

I finally got the pics reduced and uploaded to Photobucket.  Dang it took more time to do the pics then it took Crash to do the handle and window. LOL

First here's Crash wondering what he got himself into.

First step is to radius the shelf.  We use a large rattail file to do this work by hand.

Be sure all rasp and file work is done towards the center of the bow and not to the edge.  Glass and overlays will splinter easy.

The idea is to have a round edge in the bottom of the shelf/window and to radius it so that the center is higher then the front and back edge.

Clean up the shelf with a rasp (4 in 1) taking it down to the blend with the now round corner.

Almost there:

There ya go!!

Now blend the round into the window.  Use the round file and the 4 in 1 at this time.

Clean up the tool marks and radius the shelf fore and aft.

Watch the thinkness of the window.  We don't want to go under .82 inches here for safety.

Just a little more in the center of the radius and we've got it.

On to the grip and more of the same.  Use the rasp to smooth the lines and to remove "big tool" marks.

Use the trailing edge of the rasp in tight spots like the throat to keep from cutting the otherside by mistake.

Move to the "flexible rasp" to smooth the tool marks you jsut put in with the rasp. LOL

That side is done, so let's turn the bow over and work on the back.

First with the rasp bevel the corner of the overlay and glass to blend with the handle.  (Take off the sharp edge)

Do this on both sides.  REMEMBER TO ALWAYS GO TOWARDS THE CENTER OF THE BOW.

Shift to the flexible rasp and round and smooth using a shoe shine movement.

While we are working on the back, let's go ahead and blend and shape the ends of the overlay to get a nice rounded appearance.  Here use the trailing edge of the rasp and remove wood.  DO NOT REMOVE GLASS.

Go slow if this is your first time.  After a few you will do this in a few seconds.

Let's finish up the belly side of the window and shelf before we call it quits.

Bevel the belly edge of the window like you did the back side.

Use the lg rattail to hook the edge of the shelf back.

Ok the grip and window are ready for sanding.  Now is a good time to make any modifications you want to fit your hand better.

We will do tips probably on Saturday when Crash can come back over.

Tools used today were 4 in 1 rasp, flexible rasp (sanding belt pc), lg round or rattail file.  About $30 if you buy it all new.

Tony,

Crash is on his way home and will chime in with his input.  We are going to wait on the tips until he has time to do them.  Remember this is not us doing this work.  Crash is a rookie to this type of handle.  He has done a couple of our blanks and a selfbow.

Want to let everyone know how easy it is to do this.

Well while talking to Mike and Jason about a different project,Mike says to me hey jason you were a little overwhelmed by the handle on the GBB werent you ?  And i said you arent kidding im am so he laughed a little and said how about doing a build along with me and Jason i said sure and about fifteen minutes later i was in the barn with a four in hand in my hands. I think mike wanted me to do it cause im a little slow when it comes to working wood in fact his words were if you can do it any one could do it.  Well come to find out he was right the blank is so close to done that a child really could do it all it takes is a little common sense and a little reading of this thread .
what is really nice about what they have done is that the handle already feels real nice in the hand all that is needed is a little raspin and sanding of tool marks left from the bigboy tools they use, that they still dont let me touch. The shelf cut out needs to be thinned just a little and a radius put on it thats probably the trickiest part and if you think about what you are trying to accomplish its really not that difficult at all . All in all I believe I spent about an hour doing the handle up to this stage but most of that was Mike making sure that I went the correct way with the glass. This blank really does make it easy to have a good performing glass bow without paying an arm and a leg plus you get to have a couple good hours of fun in the shop getting her built.

Thanks guys!!  Crash is right, even though he has a fear of messing it up.  The bow is nearly a done deal when you get it.  A little clean up and shaping and your shooting the bow and sanding for finish.

Crash will take you through the hand tool tip work on Saturday and we'll get it ready to sand and put on some finish.

Been out of pocket for a couple of days, glad to get back in time to see this. This blank just looks to easy. I'm sure just about anyone can do it with a minimal amount of talent say someone like me. I can't wait to get one and give it a try, but uncle sam comes first to the tune of to many pecos. Waiting for the finish now and to see the finished bow.

We finally took the pics of the tips work.  I'll try and get em up this am.

Here we go!!

Tips 101 with hand tools. . .LOL

Tools required:  Vice, flexible rasp(strip of sanding belt), round file, sanding block, nock file.

Step 1:

put bow in vice belly side up

With the sanding block cut a rounded taper from belly to tip as shown

Should look like this when done:

Title: Re: R/D GBB. .A Rookie BUILDs ALONG. . . . Dryad Bows TIP PICS ADDED
Post by: wingnut on February 15, 2008, 08:57:00 AM
Now mark a line on the bow 4" up from the end

With the sanding block cut a facet tapering to the line like this

Do the other side the same way

Roll the bow over in the vice so that it looks like this:

Use the flexible rasp to round the overlay with a shoeshine motion

Use pressure on the trailing and leading edge of the sanding belt to keep it from jumping onto the limb.  BE CAREFUL!!

Should look something like this when your done

Now use the sanding block to shape the tip to a bullet

Should look like this now

use the flexible rasp to smooth and blend  the lines

Use your nock file or chainsaw file to bring the nocks up onto the overlay.  Make sure they are straight and matched side to side.

Now extend the line of the nock up and over the overlay.  I don't like a square line here so I extend towards the tip a bit to get the round line.

Title: Re: R/D GBB. .A Rookie BUILDs ALONG. . . . Dryad Bows TIP PICS ADDED

It should look like this at this stage

Now back over to the belly side and rounding and blending using the flexible rasp.

The idea here is to have a smooth transition from the rectangular limb profile to a round tip profile

Title: Re: R/D GBB. .A Rookie BUILDs ALONG. . . . Dryad Bows TIP PICS ADDED

Now it's time to finish the nocks on the belly side.  Extend the side cuts that you just did to the belly.  Watch the angle so that it stays consistant.

It's pretty easy if you take your time and look at your work as you go

Now back over and lets blend the overlay into the limb.  This can be a stressful operation, Just remember glass is pretty hard stuff but don't cut into the glass on the back of the bow.  So with the round file SLOWLY work the overlay down to the back.  We like a concave here so that your thumb slides easily up it when stringing.

Crash did the tip to match and a very nice job on both of them.  He has 2 1/2 hours into completing the bow so far.  He is going to try and come over next week to do the sanding and finishing.  We might even let him use our spray outfit.  LOL

We use a palm sander, with 60, 150, 220 grit and a detail sprayer with Thunderbird finish.

I don't know if Crash is going to do the finish that way.  He was talking about using Varathane.

I hear Crash is coming over on Wednesday to finish his bow.  So we'll take pics then and document the sanding and finishing.  This is also in our chapter in TBB4 that is hitting the stands any day now.

We didn't get the sanding documented. But here goes a quick overview.

Sand the riser, sides of the limbs and tips with 60 to remove any tool marks, 10 strokes up and down each limb edge, followed by 5 strokes on the limb corners changing angles on each stroke to round the corner.

Change to 150 grit and remove all the sanding marks left by the 60 grit and any tool marks you missed.

After that's done and a careful inspection for unwanted marks, it's time for sealing. The  Seal your riser only. Let it set overnight and reapply to the riser. Let set for 24 hours.

Now put 220 on the palm sander and do the the entire bow, glass included. Smooth it all out and apply 2-3 coats for final.

Hope this helps!

To the top for all those who may have missed this. And with the newest bow blanks coming out, I am sure there are more interested in what all is needed to complete one of these fine bows.

These bows are just plain beautiful! They are also some of the smoothest drawing bows I've ever had the pleasure of shooting.

I got one at Compton this year, got it done and I like it alot, really likes a heavy arrow, smooth and silent. A real value for the money if you like to do alittle work. An excellent product!!!
