Heres about all I'll get done today, picked a couple boards for the riser, the Ipe is too short for lams and the osage has a big knot in the other end so it won't make lams either.
He wanted a dark bow,so the Ipe in the riser should be dark and make a fairly heavy riser. I talked him into some osage for contrast, gonna put a 1/4" x 2 1/2" piece sandwiched between 2 pcs of 3/4" Ipe for the I-beam type riser(is that right?)
Then we'll saw an osage flair in the riser block after we square it up.
I've got some nice walnut,so we'll use some flat grain walnut for the limb core and veneers.Walnut makes a great limb IMO.
Takin the Missus out to dinner,so see ya in the AM! :wavey:
-
Your build alongs are great, Kenny! I'll be keeping an eye on this one! ;)
-
Looking forward to it, Kenny.
-
Same here, Kenny...hope the build-along goes very smoothly. :wavey:
-
OK,here we go,pretty busy today,my middle son in the AF came home for leave, big plot to surprise the ol man,and they did!! :goldtooth:
Here we are ready to glue up..
Glue applied mostly..
A little trick to stop slippage, wrap in plastic wrap, put a couple little blocks on either side in a couple places and clamp before you put the main clamps on...
Makes it easy to keep lined up..
Here we are ready to put in the hotbox, retighten all clamps to be sure as glue squeezes out you have a good bond.
-
KennyM, do you ruff up the boards before glue-up.
-
Yep, 60 grit thru the thickness sander,no probs so far on other bows. I have roughed them even more, but didn't today.
-
Kennym, do you have any concerns about putting the riser back in the oven when you do the rest of the glue up? Does the compression keep everything together and the glue just cures harder? I have been wanting to use smooth on the same way but I just have'nt got a "ya it works great, no probs" kind of response. Thanks for the build along!
-
I had some concerns about that,so I made a piece of plywood to block direct heat from the riser part of the form. Done half a dozen that way with no problems. I think as long as you keep the glue a bit cooler than the original temp,it'll be OK. JMHO
-
Ground lams while the 1st glueup on the riser cooked,......
Then this AM,cut into the riser block and found a nice pc. of osage for the flair, last min. decided to put some .020 padauk in between!
Test fit...
Then back to the oven....
-
Dang Kenny thats gonna be a beauty my friend. Your sons a lucky man. How do you do your radiuses (tools?)...just curious. I'll keep checkin in...Randy.
-
Kenny, Great looking bow! Really enjoying watching this one.
CS
-
Love it Kenny. Going to be a looker for sure.
-
Thanks guys,
Randy- just sawed er on the lines,(on the waste side),marked the radii with the top and bottom of a 5 gal bucket! LOL Then spindle sanded the inner radius of each piece. Then lightly clamp the pieces together with one slightly proud of the other on the edge and run an eversharp pencil around the joint, then take the outer radius to the disc sander and take it to the line.Much easier than it sounds, hope I didn't confuse everyone on that!!LOL
Heres this afternoons progress:
An overheated clamp
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/100_1531.jpg)
Purty,huh,wait before ya answer that!
The problem, top rt. of osage...(maybe from overheated clamp)
Good news is: ITS IN THE SIGHT WINDOW!! THANK YOU LORD!! :notworthy:
-
Looking good so far
-
Going to be a beauty, Kenny.
-
Great stuff Kenny! I'm really liking the looks of this one so far. Keep it coming.
Bill
-
Got just a little more done,I grind the back of the riser first then the belly. The back has to fit the form, then get fade thickness on the belly side(not done on this one yet)
-
What length and poundage are you shooting for?
-
Kenny,
It looks sweet so far. I am starting to think about my next bow and am paying close attention to your riser. Very nice choice of woods.
I really like your drum sander infeed/outfeed tables. Can ya send my a set? :D
Can't wait to see more.
Kevin
-
Kevin, we're wanting 50# @ 28" on a 64" bow.
Glued it up this AM,wife took the camera with her to KC,so no pics today.
-
Really lookin good Kenny.
-
Kenny that is just not right! You need some his and hers cameras :biglaugh:
-
OK ,got the camera back! Only a little done tonite, looks like everything stayed where we wanted it this time! Heres a pic of how I hold the belly lams to keep em from slidin up the riser, specially if the tapers are on the belly! Cut a pc. about the thickness of the glass and lams there and bevel the ends a bit,hot glue it on the riser with a couple dabs so the lams and glass push right up against it,pop it off when cured.
Heres what happens if the neighbor stops by in the middle of glueup!! I forgot to squeegee the glue down off the edges of the limbs after applying the air to er!! I usually use one of them pink soft little squeegee things by the Bondo in wally world to push the glue off the edge of the limb, then just snap it off ofter you take the bow outta the form......
Thats all for tonite,Mr. Dave Beeler called needin some bow parts,so I got those done!
-
Kenny you are a "Bowmaster" . I'm still working out the kinks in mine and when I get caught up on work I want to start another . I PMed you . Thanks Fred
-
Fred,
I'm far from that,I've just made all the mistakes at least once !! LOL
-
OK ,that last pic is where I started tonite, ground off all excess glue, ugh, easier to push it down on the plastic wrap when ya put the air to er!!
Put the centerline back on..
Lay out the limb length from center,32" each way here...
First mark is string groove 2nd is cutoff
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/100_1593.jpg)
Hacksaw the end off...
You can peel tape off cutoff just to see how its gonna look...
Lay out the limbs,I use a string with 2 heavy washers, mark center on both ends and center of bow, hang the string on the limbs and if needed adjust to where ya have it centered over middle mark, usually not necessary. Sorry,no pic there.Heres the limb marked out...
Filed the grooves and strung her up...
Sanded the corners a bit and here she is at full draw, already plannin where to tweak the next
one!!
More another day!!
-
Oh yeah, 1/4" positive tiller,43# @ 28",think I'll pike er to 62",should gain 3-5 #
-
What kind of lam thickness and tapers did you use? Looking really good.
-
Kenny,
That is just awesome. Your son is going to be very pleased with his bow.
CS
-
Blaine, I used .340 butt stack thickness with an experimental taper starting at .005" per inch at the butt and changing to .002" per inch at the tip.
Got some more pix but photobucket isn't cooperating with me at the moment!
-
Great thread, awsome work!! Thanks for the pics, they will come in usefull. :clapper:
-
Heres the actual profile ....
And a teaser on what the limbs are gonna look like...
-
Wow Looks great. Nice work
-
Great looking bow Kenny, your a real craftsman.
-
Thanks guys, I'll try to finish this one up soon!
Here I've cut the site window, worked the grip and added the riser and tip overlays, tomorrow I'll smooth everything up a bit and we shoot it!!
Looks like my tip overlay cracked a bit, might have to take it off and redo. I may take a bit off above the grip,ya think it looks fat? :p
-
If it feels good its got to be good. Man, Kenny its lookn awesome. Luvn it!
-
wow!!!that is looking good kenny
-
Kenny, I've never made a glass backed bow before but this is giving me the itch to try it. That is one gorgeous wood combintation! I've not seen too much Ipe before but I like it! And you say it was designed by your son? Man, that's neat.
-
Bona, I already had the form designed and made,my youngest and I hashed out the wood combos and riser flair. He looked thru the woodpile in my shop and came up with his picks,I added the padauk strip on a whim,I think it sets it off!The Ipe is some hard stuff BTW!!
-
Looks awesome Kenny!!
-
Looking real good Kenny!!! Can not wait to see it when you are finished.
-
I promise I'll get it finished! That plain handle is agreeing with my shootin, can't work on it for shootin it!! It may be worn out before I give it to him!! LOL
Seriously,I shoot a plain handle like that waay better than I do the bow I built last year for me,with finger groove, thumbrest, recurve handle and all that!! Not knockin that stuff, thats just me!
-
Well.
Stop shooting and get some finish on that thing so you can start another. :bigsmyl:
BTW, what do you like for finish? I am trying to find a local source for catalyzed varnish or epoxy. In California it is not always easy to get the "good stuff".
My next one is on the drawing board but I have not made up my mind on limb wood to go with Bocote.
It is looking very nice, your son has a good eye.
-
Kevin,Ive been using Minwax Helmsman spar urethane, I think thats all of the name!!
I'm testing grips on his so I can build my next one!! With bocote..........osage!
-
OOooohhh!!! Bocote and osange!
-
I wihs I cuold tipe. Heck! I wihs I kuold speell!
-
Wellll....I'm gettin closer, shot a coat of finish today. Went with a lite coat cause it rained this mornin(don't look at the dry spots),it don't look half bad if I do say so myself!
