I've had several inquires about how to dye laminations and veneers. Since I use dyes all the time when doing my wood working I thought I'd see if it might help those that are wanting something with a little more dazzle.

I've had several ask if I knew what the dyed veneers looked like under clear glass. To give a true picture I took a few drop pieces of clear glass to show.

While I was working on all these veneers I cut and run a pieces of straight grained American Elm.

I thought I'd give another wood a try for veneers. I've always been a huge fan of quarter sawn white oak with the wray flakes in my furniture making.

I've had request for sometime now about American Elm. Well here it is. The feathering between the anual growth rigs is better on the ends than in the middle, but still they really look great. Used natural or dyed, these veneers will make your next bow a show stopper.

I almost scrapped this piece of wood until I took another look at it.
There is a small check on two of the veneers, but place the checks to the tip end of the limb and I doubt they will ever be a problem. I wouldn't think twice about not using them in a bow.

At Times I get material that is intended for veneers. When the pattern doesn't work out as intended I make it into parallel laminations. As you can see in the pic the feathering between the anual growth rings of this American Elm is very short and only slightly shows on one side.
American Elm Parallel laminations
1-3/4" x 36"
1 pr. in .030", 1pr. in .035" and 2 pr. in .040"
$8.00 per pair plus shipping in the CUS only
(http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k632/arrowman2/DSCF1643-1.jpg)
As stated in this thread several times, any veneers or laminations you see in the 1-3/4" width can easily be reduced to 1-1/2". I'll gladly do it at "no charge" if you need 1-1/2" pieces.
-
Sets #3 thru #7 have more consistency in the feathering grain between the annual growth rings along the length of the veneer.
If your not a whitewood fan, a little dye can totally change the look. I'll be happy to work out something with you on dyeing any of the whitewood veneers I offer with one of the colors of dye I use.

Did a little digging through my stack of material and ran across a couple pieces of Coffee Wood.
To give you an idea of what it would look like under glass I took a scrape piece and wiped it with denatured alcohol.

This is a wood I've been hunting for several months. I finally found it and now have veneers. Used natural it really makes a great looking limb.
Here is a pic of the quarter sawn sycamore under glass.

Trying a new way of showing my veneers. Maybe this will make things easier.
Don't let the light color of these Mango veneers fool you. Here is a picture of it after wiping with alcohol.

The next thing to offer is Spalted Maple. Here is on example to how it can look used in bow limbs.

(Side Note) Set #2 had a small knot that popped out during sanding. At .030" glue will easily fill the hole during glueup.

The material that remained on the board worked out just right for a couple sets of parallels.
