Title: Best Free photo editing software

I am looking for simple, usable editing software that will allow me to doctor up pics, brighten dark images and crop size.  Is there a simple one that is free?

Photofiltre (http://photofiltre.en.softonic.com/)  is simple yet powerful and free. There is even a portable version if you have    Portable Apps (http://portableapps.com/)   on a memory stick
