I'm looking at purchasing one of these and just wandered if anyone had any reviews on it. I've been using a nikon coolpix for the last couple of years and I think its time to step up to somethin a little better. I just want a camera that will take good quality pics, I'll be using it for family pics and some hunting pics. I found a package deal with an extra zoom lens and was wandering if I really needed it or should I just purchase the camera as is without the extra lens?

The D3100 isn't a bad body. It is limited in that it doesn't have a focus motor built into the body but if you are only going to use newer AFS lenses they have integral motors. Don't know where you are looking but watch out for some of the online places that package lower end non nikon lenses with Nikon bodies. The lens is the most important part. I personallyshoot a Nikon but if I was going to purchase a basic dslr for the things you mention, I would take a good look at the Canon Rebel T1.For the money I think it's probably a better buy.

I bought my D3100 last March and have taken almost 6500 pictures with it.
The only problem they have that I have found is the mode dial malfunctions on some of them and will not set to the mode selected. This is a problem that only the shop can fix. Mine is in the shop now for a scheduled cleaning and mode dial repair.
That said, I love the camera and have carried in many miles. I can't wait to get it back.
