Went to try to roost a bird tonight.Started at the north end of the property I hunt.Used my crow call, try as much as possible not to use a turkey call when locating. But if possible when I do roost one,I will try to get to where I'll set up the next day and do a fly up to sound like a hen going to roost.
So anyway, there was someone target practicing in the orchard(about the middle of my roosting route).Heard nothing to the north, worked my way south to where they were shooting. They were gone by the time I got there.Blew the crow call a couple times, didn't really expect to hear anything with all the shooting.Nothing,so I kept going south in the orchard toward the vineyard.Snuck up to the edge of the peach trees to overlook the vineyard.I had to approach from this way cause I had been seeing hen roosting the way I usually come in.
Stood for about 10 minutes just listening and looking with my binos. Then I blew the crow call...nothing.Waited a minute, blew it again, louder this time.....nothing.I know from experience that even though birds are there sometimes, they just won't gobble at night.Ya go back the next morning and there bangin' away.I figure," just have to wait to see what's gobbling in the morning, and then set up".All of a sudden I hear wings flapping very loudly.FLAP,FLAP,FLAP..........up comes a bird from just over the hill in the orchard and it lands in a big tree that seperates the orchard from the vineyard. This thing isn't 40 yds away!!!
Good thing I was behind a peach tree.I slowly pick up my binos to see a big red head and a long beard!!!!!!!!!! Now I have to wait until it's almost dark to get out.So I enjoy the show.He startled me twice with gobbles, first time from a train whistle(about 5 mi. away),and then from a jet flying by.
I'm gonna set up in one of 2 places I've got picked out.Should be fun in the morning!!
Good Luck to everyone hunting tomorrow
-
Prolly won't sleep much tonight will ya?
-
I can sleep in, season over here. By the time the first coffee is down, you should be back with a bird and some pics. Maybe you should start the story now and save it in Word so it won't get drug out over 2 days when you get him tomorrow. Best of luck and good hunting!
-
Get'un Curt!!
-
They sure gobbled their way to bed around here last night. Its always a nice conclusion to a pig hunt to hear the turkey's bid good night. I hope your morning story ends with a dead bird. CK
-
Good Luck this morning, Curt.

Okay, Curt... Be sure to finish the story when you get back. I can't take the suspense!!!

Thanks Guys.....I need a nap :scared: ,I try to close the one window back up,so it a little darker. But as I take my bow out of the holder, I fumble with it,no time,he's almost to the decoys. He's coming big as a house, strutting right to the jake deke.Pick him up in the window just as he's getting to the jake.Well he never made it,my Kwyk Styk puts a Snuffer tipped cedar in the air.........
The set up from the gobbler view as he came in..

....Strutting gobbler and arrow come together with a crunch and he goes down!! Flaps a couple times and his head goes down, dead in less than 10 seconds!! I can't believe it,one second I don't even know if he's there, few seconds later he's dead in front of me,WOW!!!!
Now I see the hen coming in to check things out.Fish out the camera....
As she walks away I sit back and take it all in,adrenalin has taken its toll!! What a feeling,if I could only bottle it.After a minute I get out,hen flys off,as I walk to him.
Took this pic before I checked him out.View of the set up from another direction.
I walk to him,his beard and legs are under him.Go for the beard first...OH MY!!!...thicker than any I've killed(I knew this bird had a thick beard,I'd seen him before).

-
Thanks you guys, means a lot coming from my TG family :notworthy:
Still on cloud nine, just can't belive those hooks myself. They blew me away when I saw them!
It's been a heck of a season.Been getting up everyday at 4:30 before work to scout, watch, and listen to birds even though I couldn't hunt.Sometimes running(a long way!) back to my truck so I wouldn't be late.It all paid off.Loved every minute of it!!
Did some measuring before....
Beard- paintbrush thick 9 1/2"
Spurs- 1 1/2" AND 1 7/16"
He was a run down 21#'s....and he has the biggest tail I've ever seen on a bird!!
Big 160 Snuffer took the top of his lungs and broke his back.
Joe, Go kill that bird bro!!!

Curt, Congratulations, again . I'm impressed.
Looks like I'm gonna have to start searching for some of those orchards. :bigsmyl:
-
Wow, congrats Curt!
Nice pictures too. Is that a game tracker string I see on that entry shot picture? Also, what's behind the head that looks like velcro in the close up pic of the spurs?
I might have to break down (or is that save up?) and get me one of them double bull blinds some day.
-
Great story and pics. Love the one of the hooks over the limb. Game tracker string a little anti climatic when the bird drops at the spot. Nice shooting, trophy bird, earned kudos.
-
I think a spring gobbler with trad bowhunting tack is top draw. :)
rusty
-
Way to go Curt   Very nice hooks on that bird.
-
You guys really make a guy look forward to sharing these adventures with you. Thanks Again... :notworthy:
Dave, yes the string is attatched with the help of velcro.See "String Tracker and Trad Bows" in the how to forum. Here's another pic of the tracker set up... (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v77/Guru39/curtsstuff144.jpg)
