well, after a summer of scouting and two nights of hunting i shot the buck i was after yesterday evening. the best part was i shot him with a longbow i built as well as various other gear. the shot was 12 yards steeply quartering away. you can see the exit wound in the pics (heart shots are hard to keep clean for pictures). the arrow never slowed down after it passed through him and he never even knew he was hit. he trotted out into the field and died just a few feet from where the pics were taken (he went just over 100 yards). hope you enjoy the pics.....hope to have an elk and bear soon!

here are a few pics for those of you that wanted to see the bow. the limbs are glass i ground to .010 followed by veneers ground down to .009 (no joke, you could nearly see through them) followed by a layer of .030 carbon on the back side and and a .020 layer on the belly side. the cores are action-boo (bamboo flooring). the veneers on the back side are leopardwood spliced with zebrawood with macassar/osage/macassar accents. the belly veneers are zebrawood. the riser is highly figured macassar with a cocobolo flare. and the accents are black glass/osage /black glass. the limb tips are carbon/osage/carbon. the bow is 58" and 65#@28 (63# @ my 27" draw a little heavier than i wanted but i am still farting around with my limb thicknesses in relationship to carbon). i don't want to take away from the thread so i won't post the chrony #s but it is blistering fast with zero handshock (bill howland can verify that) and since it is a longbow, it is dead quiet. the arrows are beman classics that i foam filled for weight and hand crested. they have a 100gr brass insert and a 145gr first cut 2 blade head. total arrow weighs 640gr. hope this helps, gino

That is just PERFECT! The deer you were after with the bow you made and a perfect shot. How could it get any better? The best part is you can build yourself another bow and hang that one up with the deer ;)

Beautiful deer.....and the bow is a pretty close second.
-
Great buck and shot placement to boot. Congrats!
-
cool.... :D :bigsmyl:
-
Very Very nice!
One question SS, do you plan to strip that velvet or are you going to try and save it? I hear there are some better products and techniques out there then there were 20 years ago when I played around with taxidermy.
-
What a great buck and the bow is just too cool!
-
bbassi
i am going to keep the velvet (only the second velveted buck i have killed). i could not imagine him any other way. my best friend's little brother just shot his buck this morning still in velvet. we have never seen this proportion of deer still in the velvet this late. i would say 80% of the bucks are still fuzzy in our neck of the woods....strange year. the other strange thing is both my buddy and i have heard elk bugling already......not just a squeal or a chuckle but full ear shattering bugles. he is a taxidermist and has had other reputable clients say the same thing.....just a strange year.
-
You are sure talented, What a beautiful bow and deer, Congradulations.
-
Awesome!
I bet after lots of scouting it feels even better
-
You da man ! That's pretty country you huntin.
-
tell me your hunting in Washington!! I am after this bucks twin; and I cannot tell the difference between where I am hunting and the photos
I am not skilled enough to make anything but arrows that fly straight; and would be so totally proud of making my own bow to take such a critter: I am happy for you !!! :notworthy:
Perfect bow... perfect buck.. so cool!
Things that make you go "WOW!!!!"
:archer:
-
Wow, great Buck and bow. Some people are telling me the Elk are bugling around here harder than normal too. Hopefully I'll be confirming that soon. And you too!! Congrats again. Is that your only Buck tag in your area, or do you get to go at it again in your area?
-
Brian Krebs- your buck is still alive (LOL) this is in washington. however, i hunt elk in your neck of the woods....who knows, we may bump into eachother. good luck with that buck!
randy- that was my only tag. however, my best friend is trying to get on another shooter that i watched this summer. i hung his stand this morning and i am going to video the hunt for him. i guess running a camera is the next best thing!
-
Shifter---Great hunting!!!! I hope he tastes as good as he looks.
Thanks for showing us the pictures.
-
Whoa..........I am jealous...
-
Nice deer Gino! I love the short hair hides on early season deer, especially when they carry around horn like that!
Nice bow too!
-
Great buck...stunning bow!

Looks like you really nailed him. Congratulations and thanks for sharing. Beautiful!
-
Wonderful work all around; scouting, deer, shot & longbow. It doesn't get much better!

In Oz, alan

thanks guys! i just got back from hiking into the old orchard to check for bear sign......it was like dodging land mines.... bear turds everywhere. the old orchard has really produced a good crop this year and the bears are hitting it hard. i am going to hunt them like i always do, from my ghillie suit so i will either post pics when i get him or my wife will post my eulogy (SP?) (LOL).
-
Congrats! Thats the way to start a season,,Good Luck on the bear & elk.
-

-
Looks like an expert shot. Petaphiles will soon be hunting you down:) sunaj

Way to go buddy... nice deer and don't it just feel so much better knowing that you took it with something you crafted.. I love it. Great pic.

-
hope we meet shapeshifter!
I saw the buck I was after yesterday; saw the neighbors minature donkeys: chase all six bucks off; and do it again; and again. 3 does did walk right by me.. I did 'help the neighbor'later that day by fixing his fence  :archer:

Congrats on a fine hunt. I may be calling on you for advise when I embark on my bow building adventure. that is a fine bow and will show so well hung across that rack.
