Title: Missouri Hunt Stories 2008
Post by: BMOELLER on September 25, 2008, 06:42:00 PM
I went out last saturday evening.  Got in the stand early around 3:45 overlooking a bean field.  Saw four squirrels and then at 6:55 saw a doe and twins about 120yrds in the bean field.  They headed up the ridge to my right.  At 7:10 had a doe and fawn come in from the left and straight to my tree.  At 15 yards the doe threw her head up and was winding me, but looking up into the tree next to me.  She took two more steps then had me pegged.  I remained motionless (wasn't interested in shooting her) she then bounced out to 30yards quartering away.  They then bounded back the way they came.  Fortunately she never blew, so I stayed till dark thirty.  Nothing else came in.

Anybody else see any bucks etc.????

The second evening of the season I got a mature doe about 40 yards from the house. First time I've used aluminum arrows instead of wood and was impressed with the results as I got a double lung pass-thru from a 45lb Fedora bow. That's a lot lighter than I'm used to using plus the broadhead is 100 grain Magnus. It not only passed through undamaged it completely cut a far side rib in half. She trotted off about 35 yards and dropped. Been seeing a lot of deer in our alfalfa and clover fields but mostly right before dark. Even had 2 8pts sparring one evening for an extended period of time.

I had a doe at 8 yards last Tuesday.  She spotted me as I began to draw and I was contemplating lettin' loose when a squirrel went nuts right over her head!  She jumped about 20 feet and that was the end of that.  The cool thing was I called her in with a fawn bleat even though she was downwind.

My friend in Fulton got a nice 10 point opening morning that scored 134.  He said the buck bedded at 15 yards and he was frozen in his stand for over an hour until the buck finally stood up.

I'm still looking for my first trad kill although I gave it my best trying to get revenge on that squirrel!

Got out the first Fri and Sat. The mornings were OK. Sat afternoon was hot going in. Saw a couple of slick heads 80 yds out Fri morn. It was really still and when I brushed the feathers on an arrow one of them was right on me. Saw three turkeys walking out. Won't get out this weekend but after that lookout! All kinds of V days to take   :)

Had an 8 point and a big 7 point at 15 yards in my double bull last Saturday evening, but couldn't get a shot.  Gonna try a climber a little deeper in the woods tomorrow, and Saturday if necessary.  It is hot with a lot of bugs though.

I've been out once with the bow and a couple of times with just the binos. I had the wife with me on one trip and she got to see a doe with triplets fairly close(51 yds). The "Woogchilde"(my daughter) has taken 2 does and a button buck thus far. All of her deer were taken from the ground. The last one was on an open field she happened to be walking across. She dropped to her knees and using just her natural voice bleated the doe within her comfort zone then waited patiently for the doe to look away momentarily. That was all she needed to put an arrow in the vitals.
I told her she needs to back off for awhile because staying up late processing deer is getting old. It's just too hot for me to want to stick anything yet but I would be sorely tempted if one with nice spots on it walked by...lol
God bless,Mudd

ps don't hate on me because Woog has ventured over to the dark side and is shooting training wheels this season. I do think she'll switch back over when she gets bored with whacking and stacking.

Went out last evening to some public ground,  and checked out an area I haven't been in.  I set up on a point that jutted out into a milo field.  Alot of good sized tracks on the edge of the field.  Brought my Sneaky Sak and got it up in a big branched oak.  With the Sneaky Sak you have your back up against the tree unlike the other tree slings.  Its like any other "tool" it has its aspplications.  I sat in it for 3 1/2 hrs which was too long.  It got a little uncomfortable. Maybe cause it was really warm out.  With the sak I had no shot to my right, so next time I use it I'll take that into consideration.

Any way at about 6:30 on the other side of the point a deer was snorting.  I checked the wind with some talc and it was blowing the opposite way.  Maybe it smelled where I walked in?  I had the Thermocell running which I believe the deer can smell because I could smell it.  The deer kept semi circling me snorting.  Could never see it.  This went on for 20-25 min then stopped.  I thought it just went away. So I'm looking the opposite direction hoping something would come in after all that snorting.  then look back the way the snorting came from and there is 3 deer 15 yards to my right and they bust when I turn my head.  BUSTED!!!  It was getting close to dark so I baled.

I don't think I'm gonna go out until it cools down more.

I got to my stand late this morning, crawled up, hooked up, got an arrow nocked and sat down. After maybe 5 minutes a little six and spike show up across the fence line at about 15 yards, they acted like they wanted to jump but were hesitant and instead turned up a trail (offering me two broadside targets) which I turned down (too early in the game). I had forgotten my binoculars so I kept checking on them as they were milling around about 100 yards from my stand. The sun was glinting through the trees by this time and I see a flash of sunlight on horn and focus in on it in time to see a bigger deer, "the wallhanger" is what the neighbors who missed him last year call him. Anyway he follows a doe off down the hill into some thick stuff and I don't see them again but man was I glad I didn't shoot that six and boy do I wish I would have remembered my binos. Come on late October and early NOVEMBER!

Good job MoState.  Swp, I can't wait for a cool october and november myself.  Sounds like you had a great morning.

I went out this morning back behind the house as well just to look around.  The woods were so thick and the mosquitos were horrific.  Didn't take the thermocell.  Didn't see anything but a fresh rub and a squirrel.

Hey Doug,

I forgot I wasn't bear hunting and got there about 20 minutes later than I would have liked!  :banghead:  Don't be jealous cause you can't hunt them little Iowa bucks for a few more days.

Brian,
Sorry to hear about the mosquitos, they aren't bad here but the hickory nuts were falling all around me and they were as big as walnuts! The acorns aren't small either, the deer and turkeys should have some good eating.

John,
There were 150 hunters on this hunt.  We walked in about 1.5 miles and still passed by three hunters and that was at 5:15am!  Turkeys gobbled more than they did in May and the view was excellent, even though there were no deer in sight.  We'll try again Friday and Sunday.

Went out yesterday morning.  Ten minutes after settling in I had a deer come into the bean field 25yrds. Just enough light so I thought.  I thought I was looking at a doe when I came to full draw the deer picked its head up and I was able to see it was a small buck.  I let him pass.  about 30 min later a decent buck came through the beans but out of range.  Looked like an 8.  Ten minutes later had a deer wind me from behind and blew a few times so I called that spot a day.

Went over to some public land, as I was pulling into the parking lot I saw a coyote in a private field mousing.  He never showed the truck any concern.  I got out quietly and headed along the fencerow paralleling his position.  He was about 100yrds out and the wind in my favor.  I got set next to a cedar and began lipsqeaking.  he'd look my way then kept on mousing.  This went on for about ten minutes.  No more respnse so I gave up.  If I only had the 22-250.

Later, I was working around some cut beans. I thought there should be some turkeys around.  Sure enough I went around the bend of some timber and there were about 25 of them.  I scrambled to get an arrow nocked and by the time I got to full draw they either ran or were in the air.  Close!!  I headed down in the woods where they flew and tried stalking their calls since I didn't have a diaphram with me.  It proved fruitless.  Oh well.  Pretty exciting day to say the least.

Looks like you had a fun day Brian.

I went out on Friday 5:00 until 7:15 sat against a fallen tree in my gillie suit watching a bean field with 15 mph wind in my face and saw nothing.

Went out tonight 4:00 until 7:15 hoping to setup in a creek bottom with my gillie suit on where three trails converge but the wind wouldn’t allow it. 15+ mph winds were blowing and causing the air currents to swirl around in the creek bed. Tried to setup on the edge of the timber but again the air current were unpredictable. I wound up sitting in a natural ground blind overlooking the corner I wanted to hunt and a open field but I still saw nothing.

I did get to put a stalk on a squirrel but he never put himself in a spot where I could take a shot. I had a good time anyways. Its good to get out and go into predator mode.

Sorry about that. hit the send button too soon. I've been hitting it hard here for these urban deer with no luck. starting to feel like deer season finally.  Seen 13 does last saturday morning with no shots.  deer seem to be looking into the treesall of the time.  Had four bucks come into ten yards and mill around for a while but they were 4pt forkhorns, not legal here in jackson county.May have to try the guille suit that you mentioned on wingnuts thread.

Been hunting the woodlots.  Lots and lots of acorns on the ground here already this year.  Seeing several deer, but no shots since opening day.  Decided where to hunt tonight, and was about 15 minutes late getting there.  Watched 2 deer cross "my spot" from 50 yards away, then spooked another whilst trying to sneak up behind the first two...    :banghead:

Buddy missed a nice buck the other day at about 11:00 AM.  Deer seem to be moving a lot mid-to-late morning here.  Another friend told me he's still getting game-cam pics (bucks included) anywhere from 9:30 to 11:00 AM.

Time to hit the sack and get back after them in the morning!

Went out yesterday on public land and hunted from the ground.  From first light till 9am only saw 2 squirrels and 1 coon.  Decided to walk around and look at new territory.  I was about to give a squirrel a taste of carbon when at full draw a doe blows about 20yrds away.  I was walking one of the trails/roads and out in the open when she blew. She had come in to my right out of my periphreal view and was in the road as well. Huge doe.  Then I saw movement up the road it was 2 spikes.  They didn't know what was up and kept coming.  Since they had to be 4pts on one side, I'd see if I could draw on them.  When the lead spike went behind a tree, I drew.  He finally noticed me and started walking to me.  At about 20yrds I couldn't hold any longer.  I let down real fast and they about crapped their drawers.  I was wearing some predator deception brown and not the ghillie today.  I wanted to see how well this stuffed worked, and can say I really like this camo.

In the evening, I sat a wheat field. I wanted to hunt along a milo field, but the guys were in there cutting it. Walking in spotted a small doe feeding in the road.  Tried to put on a fun stalk, but she caught me.  At sundown, had a small 7pt come in to about 50 yrds.  He kept looking back and I was hoping it would have been a bigger buck... nope a doe.  They fed and the buck was dogging her like the rut was on.  He even went over to a tree and used it for a licking branch, but didn't make a scrape.  It was about dark now, so I was packing up my stool when a doe caught me moving about 30yrds out and behind me.

Driving home I almost hit a coyote and a bobcat.  Pretty eventful day.

I missed the smallest doe in KS a couple of weeks ago.  Went out today and saw plenty of deer.  Been trying to get my 1st trad deer on the ground.  I forgot how hard it could be spending the last 15 years in a tree.  Having just enough success to keep trying. It was pretty windy today.  About 11 I had a button buck come busting in and stopped at 19 yds.  He even had the courtsey to look away.  Shot right over his back.  Off he went.  I had smelt something dead in the area so I took a short walk in a circle to see if I could find what it was. No luck.  Almost back where I started and I see a doe come from the same area.  Shes about 40 yds and facing away.  I hit her w/ the grunt call a few times and she turns and is now coming very slowly. Got a chance to put my facemask back on and shes still coming.  At 9yds (yes 9yds) she goes behind a tree I draw she walks out and I shoot right over her back!! AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Twice in 30 minutes. I even told myself to aim low. She bounces twice and stares for a minute.  Trots a little more and starts feeding again.  Unbelievable!! I got back to within 30yds again, but she decided to leave before another opprotunity presented itself.  I seem to have a mental block aiming at daylight to hit a deer that close.  Oh well goodtimes, Im not giving up yet.

I was "deer walking" (credit to G. Fred) into my stand yesterday... It works!!  I wasn't in a hurry and thought I would try it. Deer walking around a bluff I was looking left when I saw the deer out of the corner of my eye starting to stand up out of its bed to my right at close to 18 steps. She blew and swaped ends as I swung the bow around... No shot but fun as it gets.

good luck to all out there.

This recent cold snap has started things up.  Friend saw a nice 3 1/2 yr old 8pt the other night and I've been seeing more and more "Mack trucked" on the side of the road.  That's a signal in my neck of the woods that things are getting ready to heat up.

Anyone else wonder if the unseasonably cool weather will kick the rut off early this year?  I know it's photoperiodism and that the does won't be ready till the 15th.  But I always think the cooler weather tends to get them moving more and earlier.

Best,
Dave

Robert (rg176bnc), good to see a hunting story from you, I don’t remember you shooting like that at 3D targets. What gives?

Brian, I like the idea for the new title.

Jeff (ductape), That’s great! I hope to see some pictures soon.

Looks like everyone is starting to have some fun, good luck everyone and keep the stories coming. Here is mine.     :scared:      that’s it! I jump up and scramble backwards! The skunk turns inside out trying to get away and he heads back into the bean field. Then he stops and turned to look back at me and decides I’m not worth it and moves on. That was close too close!

6:55 I catch movement southwest of my position in the beans. A fawn is working its way to the fence crossing. The fawn keeps looking over its shoulder. A big doe appears to my left with another fawn trailing her. They are about 50 yards away and down wind. No good so my attention is focused on the fawn. I check the head through my binoculars and give myself the green light. The fawn looks like a doe. She continues to feed in the direction of the crossing but not on the path I need her to be on. The path she takes puts her about 35 to 40 yards out. Dang it! She stands perfectly broadside to me and completely unaware of me. I watch her make her way along the fence line. When she went out of site I eased myself from the trees to try and stalk up to her. By the time I moved out of the trees she had crossed the fence and was gone. Close but no cigar.

Hi Bill

Yeah I’ve been looking for an all season cover scent that only needs one application but I didn’t have the guts to pick-up the little furry spray bottle so I had to bug-out.

John I tried rattling on Sunday but I didn’t get any results. The high winds may have muffled the sound.

Missed a doe day before yesterday.  Wasn't trying to shoot underneath her, but that's what happened.  My last couple shots have gone high, and I was determined to break the string.  20 yards, on the ground, with a doe that was acting fairly calm, but obviously knew something was up.

Got busted by 3 or 4 does (movement) slipping through the woods, but not winded.  They all tried to circle up-wind, but one made the near fatal mistake of circling close and stopping right in a nice little clear spot. (ok...it was a yearling)    :banghead:

The adventure continues...

Anyone notice the lack of acorns this year?  I've heard reports that there are plenty in the northern part of the state, but central is absolutely nil.  Am I alone in this observation?

Tons of acorns here in south central.  We had hardly any white oak acorns last year, but all varieties seem to be producing good this year.

Tons of acorns here in kansas city. persimmontrees are just loaded too. Make note of locations now and may want to visit them later this year. Seen a huge deer the other night in the rain. couldn't see it's rack but I know it's body was huge.  Had to check tracks to confirm it was a deer and not livestock.  Hope to find out for sure next week when I try that area again.

I haven't seen persimmon one since I moved back to missouri 5 years ago.  I used to see them when I hunted my uncles place south of Rolla. (too bad he sold it)  Acorns however are like John says EVERYWHERE.  The other evening stepped outside and there were 3 does under the big Burr Oak next to the drive way.  I can't even walk under that tree without slipping (they are like walking on marbles)

We had a few white oak acorns early on and a TON of persimmons this year. The last couple of weeks when I walk past some of the persimmon patches it smells like vinegar from the fermenting fruit.

Got my first archery double last Saturday when I took at big doe at just over 30 yards then tagged the little one that was running with her a minute later as it passed right underneath my stand. I passed on hunting Sunday evening cause I have 3 deer quartered out in our chill box freezer waiting to be packaged. I told my wife a goal of mine has always been to fill our freezer with venison using a longbow and I'm about there. Don't know if that means I've "arrived" or not but it brings a measure of satisfaction and confidence. Hopefully with the colder weather here now the bucks will begin to move around. Seeing just a few new scrapes although the rubs have been apparent for several weeks.

Rattled in a 10 pt tonite, wasn't quite what I was lookin for(g2 and g3 plumb broke off left side),so he walked. Rattled again 30 min later, button and a doe came from diff directions and met up 20 yds in front of me,button got free pass,as did the doe,she was nervous and stompin and I figured at 20 she would duck it or be a bad shot. Saw bout a dozen deer and 5 turkeys, overall a great evenin'!!   :goldtooth:

Had a good hunt this morning, even though it was short.  Light frost on the ground and very still.  Noticed movement about 8am to my right and had a doe walk almost to my stand, which I was prepared to take until I heard a light grunting.  I couldn't pin point it at first, but realized it was directly behind me.  Doe walks off and I can hear stuff breaking behind me so I ease my head around the tree and see a nice 10pt.  He was working the ground looking for scent but wouldn't come closer.  He finally took off after the doe once she was out of sight. Hopefully I'll have a similar story with a better ending to tell later this weekend.  If you're not in the woods right now, get there!

Lots of white oaks acorns.

Heading out in a few minutes to hunt my own property for the very first time.

Got to meet another Tradgang member Ryan Angelo (RLA) and his wife Mary who also shoots a recurve.  They made the drive from S.W.Missouri to some public land north of K.C.  Also got reaquainted with Dave Poore whom I met last year at the same area. Dave also shoots a recurve.  Hopefully Dave will log in to Tradgang and be a member.

I arrived before first light and was starting to get suited up when Dave was pulling into the parking lot.  We both talked a few minutes to see where we were going so nobody would mess the other up.  That was when I remembered meeting him last year.  Dave said he had a stand on a ridge to the east and that was where I was going to hunt on the ground, so I decided to go further down the same ridge approx. 200-300yds.  I went in and sat on a blow down about 30yds into the woods from the food plot.   At about 7:50 I was taking a drink of water when along the food plot a 4pt was running towards and behind me.  He must have hit my trail when he slammed on the breaks and started sniffing the ground, and started following my trail.  He came within 10yrds and decided something wasn't right and went back the way he came.  About 9:45 decided to take a look below the ridge.  Found several heavily used trails and thick brush going up the other ridge and a cut corn field at the end of the two ridges.  That is were I would hunt in the afternoon.

Back at the parking lot Dave was already there and we compared notes.  Dave saw nothing.  Ryan and Mary got back and we talked to them.  Dave began to show us photos of deer from his trail cams that are at the area.  Ryan and Mary went to town to get some lunch, and  Dave and I went and hung another stand for later use.  I went to town for some grubb and came back for the evening hunt.

Went down to the bottom of the ridge and found a fallen osage tree 20 yrds off the main trail that heads to the cut cornfield.  It was also about 40yrd from the corn and down wind.  At 545pm made a few grunts and looked up the other ridge in the brush and had a doe heading for the corn out of range.  Ten minutes later heard two deer jump in the creek behind me, but couldn't see them.  Also had some turkeys clucking close behind me, but couldn't see them either.  I waited until it was too dark in the woods to shoot and slipped up to the edge of the corn and looked out.  Nothing in the field.

Got back to the parking lot and Dave was just getting back as well.  Dave informed me that he spotted a nice 8pt but was too far out for a shot.  Ryan and Mary reported seeing deer and I'll let them tell their story when they get back. All in all a good trip and its not common to have four trad hunters invading public land at the same time and the same parking lot.

Had a couple of opprotunitys that just didnt come toghther on Sat.  I was on the ground when 3 older does were coming right at me.  I knew I wasnt hid good enough for deer that age.  Sure enough the first one spots me then the second one.  The second deer does an about face and runs toward the last deer.  The last deer in the bunch stands on its hind legs and wallops that deer twice on the skull!  I heard her jaws smack at 50 yards!  They left after that.

At 12:10 I had a little 8pt run 2 does by the stand. That was it for the day.

Came up from MS last Thursday to hunt with my friends up here in MO for a few days. Started hunting Friday afternoon on my buddy's 40 acres, and grunted up a 5 pt. after I saw him at a distance (4 pts. on a side minimum in this county). He winded me and went back where he came from. A young doe came close, but turned back just short of my shooting zone. Later a good 8 pt. buck passed by too far out, and the little 5 pt. followed him. My buddy saw 13 does on the other end of the place, so next day after seeing nothing on my morning hunt, we moved my portable ladder stand to the area where all the does were seen. This 40 acres has only about 10 acres of woods, but all of the open land is planted in clover, which is nearly knee high. At 5:35 a pair of young ones passed by at 10 yards headed for the clover, and I shot the second one, a doe of about 50#. Got the lungs just right, and she piled up at about 60 yards.

This was my first deer with my "new" Dean Torges osage/hickory-backed longbow "Easy", 64" and 57# at 27". Superceder arrows with 160g. Snuffers, total weight 610g. Those Snuffers make big holes- one lung was hanging out when I found her! I'll post a picture when I get back home later this week.

My wife & I were hunting in northern MO this past weekend.  It was the first time we have been hunting together.  We both saw deer and a lot of sign. Unfortunately they weren't close enough for a good shot.

On our Saturday evening hunt my wife saw & videoed 6 deer.  The closest they came was over 70 yards away, so she didn't have a shot opportunity. She was excited about seeing the deer & watching a small buck chase the does around the field.

Sunday morning we were out early about 45 minutes before first light.  We both sat until 9:45 & didn't see anything.  We decided to do some more scouting & found a fence crossing coming from a standing corn field that looked like a major deer highway.  I moved my stand to the best tree I could find by that trail & planned to hunt it that evening.  We then left to eat lunch & relax.

When we returned Sunday evening there was a brutal wind that didn't let up.  It blew the blind over & the only thing that kept it from blowing across the field was the fact that it hung up on some tree branches. Once my wife tied the blind down it was very stable & barley moved. I went to my stand & was eager to try out the new location.  After 15 minutes of 40 mile an hour wind gusts, I decided that the ground blind with a backpack full of cookies, snacks & drinks, that my wife had packed, sounded like a lot more fun.  I now understand why there is a wind farm located not too far from this propery.  We didn't end up seeing anything, but it was still a nice getaway.

I was hunting from a Gorilla Silverback treestand, used in conjunction with lone wolf climbing sticks.  It was the first time I had walked very far with the treestand & sticks.  The combination weighs about 13 pounds. It was a very comfortable & light weight set up.

My wife hunted from a Double Bull ground blind.  I have the recurve model.  Weighing in at over 20 pounds, it is not as easy to carry long distances.  But once set up, it is very nice to hunt out of & allows freedom of movement that a treestand doesn't.

We met Brian (fellow tradgang member) up there. It was cool to see 4 trad shooters and no wheel guys in one location.

Brian---After our Saturday evening hunt & a great prime rib dinner, we went back to the motel.  On CMT the movie Deliverance was playing & it's been A LONG TIME since I've seen that movie.  Now I understand --- AINTRY? This river don't go to Aintry.  Them Bear razor heads with no quiver hood didn't look to safe to me!  Hope that style of quiver wasn't to common in the 70's.

"Them Bear razor heads with no quiver hood didn't look to safe to me! Hope that style of quiver wasn't to common in the 70's."

They were more common that they should have been!!
I used them myself in the Sixties and cut myself numerous times.... thankfully nothing serious.

As I recall, there were at least a half dozen different brands of the dang things.

Archery writers of the period were always warning people to be careful of the things.

Went to the public land yesterday with WoodsyDave.  Set up at the bottom of a ridge where there was good sign the week prior.  There was even more this week.  Couldn't find exact spot in the dark, so decided to get close enough and couldn't get the climber just right.  I had to go up and down twice and still not right.  Anyway got settled in with a group of roosted turkeys and started seeing them as it got light.  Had one at twenty yards and just above me but no shot due to the branches.  The woods were dead silent and really foggy.  Tried the Can and some grunting but no one wanted to come in.  Got down at 9:45 and picked out a better set up for the evening hunt just across the creek.  Went back to talk to Dave.  Was walking by a wheat field when I noticed 3 gobblers in the field.  Fog was still heavy and they hadn't spotted me from 150yrds and wearing blaze orange due to the Youth Season.  I managed to get to within 60yrds when the gig was up. I should have taken off the orange.  Met Dave heading my way and we went to check one of his cameras he has set up on the area.

Dave and I went back to the parking lot to eat and take a break.  Had bird hunters pull in to check out the area, and talked to a few of them. We shot a few rounds on the target Dave brought then took a nap before the afternoon hunt.

About 3:00 woke up and had a guy from Michigan pull in to the lot. Talked with him about how Michigan's Public land was lousy and how Missouri's was far better according to him.  Ended up he was headed for the same area I was in and he decided to go else where.

Got in the stand quietly except I realized that I hadn't turned on the walkie radio Dave gave me to keep in touch.  BEEP, BEEP!!!  then a deer on the next ridge Blows.  OUCH!!! All was quiet.  About 6:15 saw a flash of white.  Deer!  about 60yrds out and can't tell what it is.  I try the can. No movement, try the grunt no movement.  Then I hear this weird noise just in front of me.  I turn my head slowly and its a coon in a tree 15yrds and at eye level.  Then a turkey is clucking across the creek to my left.  The coon keeps making this noise for ever and I keep trying to see the deer when it finally lifts its tail and goes back the way it came.  I guess it was an alarm sound?  Finally it gets down and goes away.  Everything silent again.  Its about 6:30 and getting dark.  I decide to hang my bow up and put my jacket on because its getting chilly.  BLOW! BLOW! a doe about 40-50yrds in front and I never saw her there due to the thick cover and darkness. I figure the game was up and time to head out.  Half way down the tree and BLOW! BLOW! she came back to 30yrds.  Oh well.

Hopefully Dave will post his story and tell how he got a picture of a big 12pt. that was in front of his camera while we were in the parking lot getting ready that morning.

If you find a 500lb gorilla in the woods you can keep him!!  Got my first trad kill today.  Had a button buck fawn and doe fawn come in from behind me and mingle around for over an hour. During that time saw a nice 6pt cruzing to my North.  I gambled spooking the fawns by grunting at him, but no action.  Looked back at the fawns and their still eating fresh leaves as fast as they can.

The doe fawn finally trotted off(which was the one I wanted) so it was the button buck or nothing.  Given my first 3 attempts were high this season he was fair game!

He came into 7 yds and looked away.  I was more concerned w/ height than left and right and the shot placement showed.  Hit him right behind the last rib w/ a 150gr snuffer.  He trots to 17 yds and all I see is a big black hole in his side that absolutly no blood is coming out of.  No fault of the snuffer though, the shot was directly in the gut.

I nocked another arrow w/ a Zepher Sasquach and let her rip again.  The entrace wound was about an inch higher, but angling forward and out through the ribs.  My how the blood did flow!!  Could see it coming out before the fletching had disappeared!  He went another 30yds and that was all she wrote.

Wife had the camera so no pics, sorry guys.   Nice to get the first one done with.  Today was my 16th wedding anniversary as well.  I shot a dandy buck 14 years ago today, thats how I get away w/ still going on this day.  I guess if I havent ran her off yet though she's probably not going anywhere.

I got a nasty note from my neighbor. Have a treestand on a fenceline, we have used the same spot for 19 years now and they decide I am too close to their fence.  :saywhat:  Went to talk to them and they decided since I wasn't shooting across their fenceline it was OK. Hmmmm. could it have to do with the wall hanger buck? Saw 4 turkeys and a coyote Saturday and three does today. No shots and no rutting activity, could be because of the 72 degree weather this weekend. I did find a scrape though.

I went out this weekend. It was too warm for me but you have to hunt when you can.
Saturday morning I rattled in a little six pointer to about ten yards right behind me. The afternoon was slow with only seeing 2 does at about 100 yds.
This morning it was warm and foggy again. About 20 minutes after shooting light I heard a lot of racket behind me and there was a buck chasing a little doe. They went all around me for a few minutes and then moved off. I tried grunting but they didn't pay any attention to that. When the buck was about out of sight I tried rattling but did not get any response.
About 45 minutes later I'm sitting there not paying close attention when I heard a noise. To my right at 20 yards is a buck walking on the trail that passes in front of me. I stand up, pick up my bow which thankfully has an arrow nocked, and grunt to stop him at 12 yards. Perfect double lung pass through. He went about 100 yards and I could hear him fall just out of sight. 5 points on the right side but the left side only had 3. It looked like it had broken off the end while still in velvet.
55# Yellowstone longbow, ash arrows with Magnus I head.

At 9:30am today,I spotted a nice buck about 150 yards away. I grunted at him and got his attention. I then snort weezed and he came in on a string.I looked him over real good at ten yards. He was a mid 140" 10pt. looked like a 3.5 year old deer, definatly not a 4.5. I let him walk. I was wishing that I had a decoy, I bet it would have gotten real interesting!

I had done everything right for a change, I was finally caught up enough that I wasn't messing with a stand or some other silliness that should have been taken care of months ago.  I exited my vehicle quietly, got my gear and "deer walked" my way slowly to a stand near a creek bottom.  I'd not tried deer walking seriously before, but with the dry leaves making silence impossible, I had to admit I sounded more like a deer than a man as I stopped and started my way down the hill.  I didn't bump anything out, I knew that was a good sign as deer frequently bed not that far away.  Hunting alone for the first time this year, with no teenage sons to get settled in first, I was in my stand quickly.  It was a nice day...too nice in fact, once I was settled I decided it was downright hot, not the best conditions for deer movement.  However, with the rut winding up I could hold out some hope, and enjoy some time away from it all in the woods.  Things didn't feel right, it was too warm and I had that unexplained but confident feeling I wasn't going to see anything.  An hour passed that way, but the temperature began to slowly drop a couple degrees, and the wind calmed somewhat.  Sure enough, I heard the tell tale sound of a walking deer, behind me of course.  I angled around slowly and surveyed a 6 pointer with surprisingly good mass for his age, strolling towards me on the other side of the creek.  I recognized the deer as one we'd seen before, he frequently bedded on the fringe of neighboring property.  He got to the other side of the creek and stopped.  I knew he was not a legal deer so I decided to sit like a statue and see how close I could get him.  Not very close it turned out, as the fickle breeze gave him a hint of something wrong.  Judicious scent control on my part payed handsomely, as he did not spook or alarm, but after some apparently whimisical thought and looking around he opted to wander off back the way he had come, unconcerned but opting to play it safe.  It is always fun to have deer close and I enjoyed it immensely.  About half an hour later I looked back again and could see him browsing about 100 yards away behind me, and right under my son's stand.  I made a mental note to be sure to tell him.  More time passed and I figured, "That was probably my excitement for the day".  About 15 minutes later I heard a deer walking fast to my left, angling behind me.  I slid slowly around again to see a deer trotting down the other side of the creek bottom toward me, paralleling the creek.  It was the buck, and I welcomed back my recent visitor.  The wind had faded to a steady breeze, no longer fickle, and this time it was completely in my favor.  I manuevered around to watch the buck, and he trotted to nearly the same spot as before and began to calmy browse.  Wait a minute!  This is a different deer!  I began to count...1-2-3...1-2-3..I counted to 3 good points on both sides, over and over again like a four year old, but to no avail, I kept getting 3 points.  I relaxed a bit and enjoyed the show.  "Wait a minute dummy!" I thought to myself,  "You're counting 3 points on the main beam!  If this deer has any brow tines to speak of your looking at an 8 pointer."  Well, I couldn't see any brow tines but the main beam points were fairly long, giving me hope.  I attempted to hold my bow, keep my balance and fish my binoculars from off of my day pack with the other hand.  It wasn't very smooth but I got it done.  After juggling with the binoc's in my left hand, trying to pull lens caps off with my teeth and focus with a single finger I finally had the deer in my Burris'.  He turned broadside at 20 some yards, browsing to his off side and exposing his vitals as if he was begging to be perforated.  I took a hard look and there they were, a pair of brow tines close to 3 inches long!  I was looking at a legal buck, and he was absolutely clueless to my presence. The bulk of his rack was white and polished, but the brow tines were dark, which made them hard to see against the background.  As I put down the binocs and started to angle for a shot the deer was already moving again, to my left and behind me.  Rats!  He continued to move behind me along the creek.  This was going downhill fast, I pulled out my can call and hit it once.  He looked around but wasn't coming, so I thought "enough of that", no need to tip him off.  He calmly sauntered farther behind me and to my left, well in range but obscured by limbs, and he eventually walked away down the creek and out of sight.

I'll get him another day I thought, and thanked the Lord for a great day and a great hunt.

Man I wish I'd have recognized what I was looking at sooner...but in my defense this is the first year my hunting area is under a 4 point restriction, so there's a learning curve I guess.

That has been my best hunt thus far.  Tim

Great story Tim. I have to deal with the point restriction for the first time in my area as well. I'm all for it, but it could make for some frustrating moments. Hopefully you'll get another shot at him. Good luck.

Tim, sounds like a good hunt inspite of the warm temps.  I'm headed out in the morning to my buddy's place in Davies county.  He's coming up from florida and I haven't been on his place since september.  Last year this time he shot a nice 9pt.(130's) I'll report when I get back.

Finally on the last day of my vacation and I'm glad I passed on the little ones.  I'm happy for a nice deer and sad he won't get any bigger.

Sweet buck Nevin.   One to be proud of for sure.

Just got back from my buddy's place.  Windy, Windy, Windy, Cold.  Didn't see anything but a hen turkey all day Friday.  This morning saw a small 8pt. with a doe walking out.  Afternoon hunt saw another small buck maybe a 6pt. across the creek.  Then at 4:00pm had a forkhorn come in to 30yrds.  End of weekend.

Now I'm gonna get ready for next weekend and the K.C. Urban Hunt.  Lot of big ones in there.  Hope I get a chance at one.

The bucks are really moving.  Try the thicker cover out of the wind even on windy days.

Yesterday the K.C Urban hunt began.  Had an awesome day except for one thing.  I lost a HUGE buck.  This buck would have to gross in the 160's. It had all kinds of stickers etc. but I couldn't tell you how many points.  It all happened so fast.

It was right at 9:00am, and I was standing and looking behind me because there was some deer activity.  I turned myself around and all I saw was antlers coming to me.  Got my bow off the hook and got ready.  Then I noticed the 2 does he was chasing.  The first one hesitated and looked up at me, but kept going.  The second one kept going and he stops in my shooting lane.  He was 16yrds and barely quartering to.  I'm already at full draw and was looking at the elbow when I let go. I hear a thump and see the chartreuse feathers hit him forward in the shoulder.  He immediately lunges forward and breaks the arrow off.  He trots down the hill and stops for a few seconds and walks off.  I can see my arrow from the stand but can't tell how much is there.

I get down at 9:40 and check the arrow.  8-9 inches of penetration.  Found blood 6 yards after impact and it got real good further along.  He headed towards the creek, but then went straight back up the hill.  At the top puddle of blood about the size of a dinner plate. then NOTHING!!  Searched each direction for more, but couldn't find any.  I looked for 2 1/2 hours.  I was upset and sick, sick, sick.  Thought about going home to get help, but thought that my possible help might be hunting and decided to look along the creek one more time. Jumped another monster below where mine went and thought it might have been him, but the rack was more clean and typical. Finally went back to the stand and hunted the afternoon, and all I could do was look at the spot where I shot him.

Called Dave Poore(WoodsyDave) and Dave Bulla that night.  Woodsy said he would come help look after I was done hunting this morning at 10:30.  Dave Bulla is in the urban hunt as well and helped me look as well.  We grid searched and came up empty.

I don't know everything felt good, but somehow pulled it a little to the right.  Hopefully this deer will be alright. I'd rather have missed him than wounded him.  I wasn't nervous at the shot what so ever.  I always start shaking after the shot.

Total on saturday I saw 6 bucks and 6-7 does and one bobcat.  Sunday morning I saw 3bucks (small) and 7 does.

Brian,

Sorry to hear about your buck.  Sometimes weird things happen when the shot is taken.  I would have sworn I hit my buck quartering away but when I found him it was quartering to.

Looking forward to seeing what else you get a crack at on that hunt.

Chris

Anyone else bowhunt during the Missouri gunseason opener.

The wind was brutal on Saturday and I didn't see anything that looked like rut activity.  No chasing and all the does we saw (while driving up the driveway at night) were in large groups. Only one buck seen.

The last two years I have seen great rut activity on the opening weekend.  This weekend I didn't see much if any sign even while driving 4 hours from Springfield to Weston.  Given that this gun season opener was much later than normal I was really suprised.

Just wondering what the rest of you guys saw.

Chris

Brian, sorry we couldn't find your buck. He sounds awsome.  He's probably still out there chasing does and waiting for your next encounter.

The area looks great. I will definitely join you next year if I can get drawn.

We have a lot more hunts this season and I know you will tag yours before it's over.

See you soon

Dave

Chris,

I sat 8 hours with the wind in my face on Saturday and saw one buck cruising for does early in the morning.
Sorry to hear about your troubles Brian! It sucks to put an arrow in one and not recover them.

Sorry to hear about that one Brian, but I'm sure it's happened to all of us.  One year I searched and searched all over for a deer I hit, with little penetration.  I gave up and told a friend.  He then went with me and found it in a matter of minutes in the weeds in the same area I'm sure I walked through.

My dad and I had a great few days at our place in the Ozarks. I'll start another thread for the story but here's a little teaser.

I told her to come on Tradgang and show it off. We will have to wait and see if she will.

Went to Central KS. w/ my friend on our annual whitetail hunt the week before Thanksgiving.  Ive only been here 4-5 times and I have seen whoppers every trip.  About 3 yrs ago I had a 170" in at 12 yds and he managed to slip away.  I was freaking heart broke.  On to this year.

The first day out it was obvious the rut was done.  Although the weather was harsh 20 degrees or so and really windy.  Not a single deer and this is deer country for sure.  Day 2 in the morning I saw zip again.  That after noon I decided to drive around some other places and see what was up.  Saw several deer and 1 10pt that was about 150" chasing a doe. It was encouraging.

The 3rd day still zero deer on the stand.  Unbelievable!! Im overlooking deep trails littered w/ so many tracks thier almost hard to tell whos who.  About 11am I cant stand it anymore, time to make my own luck.  I bail out of the stand and head down stream.  I had been hunting the upper end of a bottle neck on a river.  The week b4 my buddy Ed had seen 2 bucks across the river from him (where Iam now) chasing a doe. Both over 180"  Im headed to where he last saw them.

I get down there and decide to rattle and see what happens.  I smack the antlers together and within seconds a doe bounds over the levee and running for deer life!  No shot she hits the river and is gone.  For people who have never been hear a little insight. When doe's get chased out here there is almost no getting away, they are runnin for their life!  I wait abit and still no buck.  I decide to head to where she came from I ease around the end of the levee and see some dozer piles.  My thoughts go to bunnys!!
I get an arrow out and start scanning the brush ahead.  I see something odd and all I see is a rack in the brush w/ 6 points on one side about 50 yds away.  I havent been quiet for sometime now so Im sure hes dead.  I think to myself someone shot this deer last week and didnt say anything. I take 2 steps and then it moves.  Holy @#% hes alive!!!!...and has no clue I even exist!!!

Having a bit of trouble w/ photobucket.  Wind is definatly in my favor.  Blowing left to right about 15mph.  I get to within 22yds. Thats as close I can dare to manage.  Im within 22 yds of an 11pt monster that Im guessing at 185" or so.  Believe it or not Im not even shaking!!  I get myself ready.  I decide to myself Im gonna wait for him to stand on his own.  I get to waiting and I decide to chance a couple of pics. I get 3 and he still is just enjoying the day in his little hiddy hole.   I ck the time and Ive now been here for 1hr!

Finally he starts to get a little nervous stands up and looks dead at me.  In the pic he appears to be facing the right.  When he gets up he is facing left and has the branch in the pic above going right across the top of his vitals. Now I know Im screwed.  He jumps over the dozer pile and out of my life forever!   Q@#$%^#@$^@$%&

I was comfortable w/ the shot distance, but I wasnt sure I could miss the limb, so I held off.  What a magnificent beast.  I was totally awe struck when he stood.  Im sure he was less than 5yrs old to boot!

Are you on dial up?

Sometimes high megapixel photo's take a long time to load and cause problems.

Might be able to resize (edit) in your computer first to about 600 pixels wide and speed things up.
