Three weeks into it, and some successes to report so far. Opening day, and the only time dedicated to deer, just to break the "ice" a bit and get into the action. I took this fine doe with my new selfbow, and a cane shaft in the morning.

Congrats on some fine eating
-
Now that's what I'm talking about...
Congrats on your primative deer!!! Some fine eating there... So how much harder is it with primative?
-
Young Riley Fisher, also took a nice doe that morning.
His Dad...Fish Fisher, my hunting partner of some 20 years, took this doe while hiking back from his morning elk hunt the second day. It died alongside a hay meadow, so he retrieved with his 4-wheeler....(Okay, Don't let David Peterson know!)

That was the measure of our efforts, meat-wise for the first weekend. Always good helping out the landowner with deer control by taking as many does as we can. My sons Boone and Kory had no luck, and elk hunting was pretty slow, so far.
I did manage to stay an extra day hunting alone, and built a ground blind to intercept elk coming into a hay meadow. Here's a couple pics.
And through the "peephole" at dusk...
I did have a bull come by at about a hundred yards...real nice bull, but no shot opportunities.
The next weekend, Boone and Kory were unable to make the trip, but it was just as well, as the full moon and warm temps had the elk almost totally nocturnal. We worked mostly on setting new ambush sites up. The elk here do not call in real readily, and we use ambushes almost exclusively. A real great bull/cow ratio keeps them vocal, and you get to hear a lot of bugling, but they will not respond. Still nothing like that sound to get your blood boiling!
-
Well done.. Congrats.

Congrats

Third weekend, and we all were able to have fun pursuing elk mornings and evenings, with chasing antelope and stillhunting deer mid-days. Here's a pic of me working up the ridge towards a stand for elk.
No meat but lots of fun....until Sunday morning.
Boone left for home, sick and coughing too much to hunt. Kory and I went to ambushes nearby each other. At first light, Kory had the herd come by and took this scrapper! Details will be in an upcoming story, but suffice to say, he keeps showing up the ol' man! A selfbow kill, 20 yard heart shot with cedar shaft and magnus head. What a bull!

I'm jealous, well done man! I like your music by the way.

Kory and I left Sunday afternoon with a load of meat, and also took Riley home as he had school on Monday.
I just talked with Fish, and he was able to stay an extra couple days this weekend and also took a bull. I will post a pic if he sends me one!

cool, it looks like you, fish and the kids thinning the herds for sure.
Is Riley's bow and old rocky mtn?
Congrats and well done to all!!!
-
very nice my friend. Way to fill the freezer. How big of a tract are yall hunting on? Looks to be beautiful country. Congrats on an early head start
-
Thanks all.
Hey Brian...hows your season going? That is indeed an old John Morris bow. Nice bows they are/were. Riley has been shooting this one all year, and is doing great with it. He's taken a couple more does near his home as well.
-
nice and nice bows. Looks like young Fischer is shooting a Rockey mountain recurve. Congrats. That part of Montana sweet
-
Kyle...we're fortunate to get to hunt some private ground that butts to the FS, so a lot of great country indeed. It's quite a drive from my home...2 hours...but the elk hunting is really phenomenal. It's good at home as well.
-
Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! You guys are living my dream!
Would you mind sharing more info about the selfbows used in those harvests?

Ryan
-
My son Tanner is 12yrs old and is hunting his first year. He is shooting a rocky mtn bow as well. I wanted one of those bows in the 80's so bad I could taste it!! So I bought one here on tradgang last year. He has done quite well so far this year and I'll post some pics at another time. But be warned we are not standing behind no elk like your boys are puttin' down, UFF-DA!
We'll be hunting with the St Judes bow "Ms Hope" this weekend. Schuster will also be here this weekend on doe patrol.
Don't let Baker pull the wool over your eyes guys I don't care where you hunt here in montana if you pull out as many quality elk as Mark, Fish and there boys have done over the years with the equipement they're useing, you know what your doing.
-
WoW awesome stuff congrats! :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:

Good shooting guys.

Mark,
Just fantastic! Thanks for sharing and I am LOL about the David Peterson comment :D not that I am a fan of ATVs. Like using my feet when I can, but man the years are adding up here. :D

:clapper: Way to go to you all!Beautiful country and I cant wait for the story.
-
Thanks for posting Mark. Very nice pictures. Congratulations.
-
:notworthy: :notworthy:
Way to go guys!!!!!!
-
Thanks all...and nice to hear you're out with your kids Brian. For those wanting to know, both selfbows were made by myself. Kory's is an unbacked osage, 58 inches nock to nock with moosehorn tip overlays, and pulls an honest 70 lbs. He took an interest last year with the selfbows, so has been shooting that one since last season, when he took a couple does with it. My bow is osage, with a pair of bull snake skins that I got from Ralph Renfro at MOJAM a couple years back....pulls 62ish and is 62 inches nock to nock, with sheephorn overlays.
-
Mark,
Congrats to you all and way to go! Looks like you all have made some great meat.
Was that Shania you were shooting? Or one of the others.
Good luck and best wishes the rest of your season.
-
congrats Mark. But I'm tellin' Dave about the ATV :D
-
AWESOME... :bigsmyl: :notworthy:
-
Great story and photos!! Will we be seeing another Baker Boys story in Traditional Bowhunter mag?
-
Wow, look so exciting. :clapper:
-
Hey Mark, Congrats w/ the success and it's nice to see your family is doing well. Those sure are some pretty bows. I can't wait to read about Kory's bull. It's a nice one. Next Saturday is our opening day here in PA and to say I'm getting pumped and anxious would be an understatement! Good Luck on getting your bull!!
-
Mark, doesn't get much better than that! Hunting with the boys is as close to Heaven as you'll get here on earth.
Congrats my friend.
-
NICE!!!! :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
-
Congratulations!
-
Congrats Mark and sons. Looks like you guys are having a blast. Keep it up!!
-
What a great start to the season!!! Beautiful bull, I look forward to the story!
-
Congrats on the deer and what nice bull Kory got!
You guys are having a great season, hope it gets even better..
I'm curious, do you know what kind of velocity you're getting with those self bows and your arrow weight ? Obviously it's "elk killing" good!
-
WOW. Thats a beatiful bull!!!
-
-
Congrats to all and good luck for the rest of the season!!! Most of all thank you for posting the pics, it's almost as good as being there
-
Well done, great photos, wish I was there.
-
Awesome! I love selfbows.
-
Holy Crap!! Way to go on all the critters, and that bull of Kory's...well I'm speechless! Congrats!!!
-
Good job fellas! Looking forward to the "rest of the story."
-
Great season Mark, Kory had a good teacher.
-
Mark,
Congratulations on a great start.
The pics from your blind are making me long for the mountains again.
Great post!
-
Wow. Congratulations on the kills, guys. Looks like a load of fun!
Skyler
-
Good bull Kory!! Mark, I'll bet you are proud!! Congratulations!
-
Great story and pics. Congrats on the deer and elk. You guys make me just a little bit jealous, ok, ALOT jealous
-
WOW!!!!! nice job guys
-
Okay....as promised, Fish sent me a pic of his bull, which he took on Monday afternoon the day after Kory shot his. Fish went to another area, where the elk frequent some open country, and stalked into 15 yards of this bull making a quick job with a good shot.
He also stalked into this coyote, sleeping, and took him out as well. Lots of these around, but always a heckuva trophy with bow and arrow, IMO.
Thanks for looking, folks, and I will try and keep this thread updated as there is a lot of season left! - Mark
-
Wow Outstanding Folks. Now that's what you call hunting! Congrats all around!
-
Mark thanks for sharing, congrat's!!! Jerry Love the quiver caddy do you still sell them please let me know, Thanks Jerry
-
Yeah, I still sell the Quiver Caddy's. You can contact me direct at [email protected] or call 406-222-6052 for details. Only quiver option us guys use!
Going to head back up in the morning. Probably be hunting alone as everyone's "tagged out" on elk but me! Sigh!
I'm havin' some fun though! Check back in later.
-
Wow, you guys are really layin' 'um down!
Good luck buddy
-
Dang! I shoulda come out this year! Keep it up and there won't be any left out there, LOL!!
Congrats to Killer Kory, again. Same goes for Riley! I still laugh when I think about when he got his bull last year, HA!
-
What a great start! Very glad to see it. Mine starts this weekend and it's looking real good. Does that new bow smoke an arrow like Shania? Selfbows aren't supposed to be that fast!
Tell everyone we said hello, and keep the pictures coming.
-
Here's a follow up on what has occurred. Young Riley has continued his successes in the Bozeman area on does, taking a couple more...
-
And his Dad, Fish, also filled his buck tag on this nice whitey...
-
I hunted every chance I could, but could'nt seem to close the deal on any elk. I saw lots of nice bulls, heard a great deal of bugling, shared in my son's success. A great season so far....archery only.
This weekend was the last chance for elk at the ranch, and they just were'nt around. I did, however, take this fine coyote, a first with bow for me. Dang nice trophy in my book. Those buggers have dodged many arrows from my attempts through the years. This one was not so lucky....and with a selfbow. So, Alex, to answer your question about how fast this selfbow is....fast enough I guess!
Still have to whole general season to get out there...and spent some time setting stands for rutting whitetails in the coming weeks. Can't wait for that! Also, might get out some more for elk, we'll see.
-
wow great stuff thanks for sharing!
sure looks like you guys got some good hunting in Montana!
-
That is a hell of a trophy with any bow let alone a self bow, well done!!!!!
-
Way to go, Mark. A great season so far, with more to come!
-
A fantastic fall so far. Congrats on all the fine trophys and for sharing, great pics.
-

-
:notworthy:
Great post Mark. Looking forward to seeing you in Fla this March
-
Nice dog Mark!
-
Well alright Mark and the gang!!! I just found this thread. Awesome animals and bows. Good luck the rest of the year. Mark, I hope those evil rifle hunters with them ATV's dont mess-ya up and get you all heated up again this year. Remember...they are carrying guns!!LOL.
-
Hey thanks all, and yeah Randy, I've been dropping pre-emptive "hints" to the landowner about the slob hunters around last year. I have high hopes still, as we should have the place relatively undisturbed and to ourselves this year, and if not, I've got back-up plans as well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed cause it can be really good up there!
-
Way to go Baker crew!
-
I'm going to give you guys (and kids) sling shots for christmas.
I don't know what else to do to slow you all down from killin' all the game left in Montana, for crying out lound your only use'en selfbows.
Oh well the sling-shots will be for next year. now for the rest of this year you have to tie your shoe laces together, maybe that'll slow ya down for a couple weeks :notworthy:
Congrats to all!!
-
Once again the Baker boys have shown us how its done...Great stories and pics....
-
wow that Riley is gonna be quite the hunter. hahaha doesn't it seem sometimes that the younger ones (Kory, Riley, etc.) make it almost seem easy, Mark you got a great group of family and friends to hunt with!!
-
Congratulations Mark on all your groups success! I glad to see both you and Fish did a great job with the kids!
Maybe we'll get to share a camp again one of these days?
Tom
-
Wow, I see this got pulled up again by Brad! Oh well, here is a quick summary of my season...
I hunted hard, every day sometimes twice a day throughout November. I have a great spot to hunt right near home, although shared by a half dozen other bowhunters....persistence and a good game plan let me see a lot of great bucks this year. Here's a few pics of some that I called in and passed on.
-
Somewhere during the first week of November, my selfbow "blew" on me while practice drawing in my stand! It happens....
Luckily, I had a backup...my bamboo backed Ipe, and it's a real log slinger too!
While passing on literally dozens of opportunities, I did call in a few dandy bucks, but could'nt get the job done. Those older guys are tough, especially when the lead is flying all around the property bounderies. I called this guy into 10 steps, and could'nt pull off a shot at him...doh!
-
He was a 150 class 5 by 5 and a dandy too!
All during this time, I could'nt even buy a shot at a doe, they get tough to shoot this time of year as well.
Finally, the last weekend of our season, and on Saturday nite, I was tickled to fill my doe tag and add to my freezer...
-
This is really a great place to chase deer, as the wildlife is plentiful and diverse here, and the view is outstanding.
This is looking out from my stand, towards the east.
-
My last evening in a stand before another years' wait....
Deer were moving well, and I had them all around the entire evening. I spied a great buck that I had recognized from the year past, and he was moving in the area, so hopes were high, despite the dwindling time....
In the stand, several does kept me occupied and entertained all evening...but the bucks were not in sight. I decided to rattle the horns, just to stir things up a bit. Later, I spied this great buck moving through the distant cottonwood/juniper bottom, scattering the does. As he came closer, I could see he was a good'n. He was 100 yards off and moving away, but some desperate grunting brought him into my vicinity, and this time I was able to pull off a great shot on him. Another last minute finish for me. He's an old brute, and a fighter as evidenced by his broken up rack, but an old guy for sure.
I had to enlist the wife into flashlight holding chores two nites in a row, for boning meat and caping. After a few hours in the dark, my team and I were glad to be back at the truck!
And that ends the Baker season so far. Still have a chance to chase cats, and maybe bunnies and a late season doe, but all in all a good year for this crew!
-
Congrats on a great season Mark. Some outstanding animals! That scenery pic is just stunning. I'd sit that stand even if game weren't plentiful. Simply beautiful....
-
