Title: A day with Doug....
Post by: Guru on November 12, 2008, 08:41:00 PM
Yes sir...."THE" Doug Campbell, knife maker supreme, was here in NY. He just happened to be staying at one of the plces I hunt thanx to him     ;)  .

His lovely wife Karen and him rolled in Monday and plans were set to spend the day and hunt all day Tuesday.

Met him at 5:00am, and after a quick hand shake and some cloths changing(not each others     :D  )  , we were of into the darkness. Walked him to a tree that I thought would be his best bet for an opportunity. He had some screw in steps and a Gorilla treestand to set up in the dark. I was off to another tree about 150yds away that I would climb with my Lone Wolf.

I'll be back...

First deer I see is splitting the yardage between us, but maybe a little closer to Doug. It was a small buck, and I knew with only a day and a half to hunt and an either sex tag,he wasn't going to be too picky. Just about the time I figured things were going to get interesting as I watched thru bino's, the buck stops on a dime, and looks toward where I knew Doug was. It was obvious he'd called to him, and it worked! He turned and started toward him...I watched till he went out of site and waited for something to happen.....but I never heard or saw anything.

He'd called him almost to the base of his tree, but a good shot never presented itself....

The morning was filled with bucks and does for both of us...it was almost non stop sightings. One buck we both saw was a nice 2 1/2 year old 4x4. I tried to call him in, but he didn't want anything to do with it. Little did I know Doug had already called to him and had him coming right to him, that is until a bunch of does showed up and changed his course

Seems I put Doug in a pretty good spot....I think he saw about 10 does and fawns and 3-4 bucks!

It was my best morning of the season, only the fourth morning I've gotten to hunt this fall      :(

Some pix from the morning stand......

 My favorite pic....

We got out of our hunting cloths and shortly Karen showed up with a nice lunch. Soon enough we were out to show Doug a spot I wanted him to see and some stump shooting. Doug also mentioned trying to kill some squirrels....he couldn't believe how big our gray squirrels are.....

It wasn't long before he made one of the nicest shots I've ever seen on a squirrel...it went nowhere!

As you can see he's smiling in this pic because I was giving him a little static about using a store bought folding knife....just didn't seem right....

The afternoon hunt was incredible!! I'll be back.....

Hey Guys, Curt was a great host showing me his hunting spot. The wife and I are still on the road, headed West again. We've got a few more stops so wont be home till just before Thanksgiving. We had to make another trip to NY to get a horse so why not make the most of it and get in a little hunting along the way. More on that later probably after we get home.

Like I said Curt was a great host showing me around and one of the best spots for a stand. I think I saw 7 bucks and several does in one day and another buck yesterday morning before we headed out. I hope I don't mess up Curt's story but unfortunately I didn't get a deer killed. That certainly wasn't the only reason for being there, Curt and I had a great time and I look forward to our next opportunity to hunt together. Great pics Buddy!

About that squirrel... well you know what they say about the blind sow... And that is the biggest grey I've ever seen, I plan to add a couple more to it in MO and Mom's already getting her cast iron skillet warmed up   ;)

And that isn't just any ol folder knife. I know the guy in WA that designs and builds em  ;)

Jeremy, I was going to holler at you but everything just got too piled up on this trip. We've been going almost nonstop since the 2nd.

Well gotta hit the sack and get ready for another day, plan to make MO tomorrow for four days of visiting... Thanks again Curt and everybody for the support.

sorry guys....I'm a little busy     ;)

Doug, believe me the pleasure was all mine bud. You have no idea how much I needed a day spend hunting with a good friend and seeing the action we did!!  I can't wait to do it again    :campfire:

....when we were stump shooting I spotted a buck at a distance that was on his feet...we figured we'd get back into the woods a little early.

Doug headed back to the same stand that he'd set in the am, I headed to a spot about 80yds from the tree I hunted in in the morning. I wanted to cover the stome wall breaks the deer were using.

As I was setting my LW climber a buck jumped up from behind the stone wall about 40yds away and loped up the hill. The smallish 7pt. stood and looked around for 10 minuted then walked off futher up the hill. I climbed up and immediately saw that he was bumping sround some does at the top of the hill. Thing is,the wind was really squirrelly and would sometimes blow up in that direction. I slowly got everything set while carefully watching what was going on 100yds away up on the hill. Before long all the deer were out of site. But soon enough, I see the 7pt again bothering a doe up on top of the hill. But again in a little while they were out of site. This went on for a bit,but then the man showed up. At first I thought it was the seven again, but my bino's revealed a beautiful, big framed 8pt.!! He was now with the doe.......

Curt,

Ya got a knack for stringing us along.

Time and fellowship between friends, dangerous gray squirrels taken, time away from work, and being in the woods, are enough already to read like a successful hunt.  :)

Curt is doiong a great job so I wont do any more to mess it up. I story telling brain cells are prety dulled from being on the road moving way too fast for a week and a half... We're getting ready to head out again in a few minutes and wont had 'net service for a while, (Mom is still living in the dark ages  ;)  )

Not sure yet if I'll try and hunt in MO, ussually with all the visiting we try to get in in just a few days it's impossible. If I do y'all will hear about it though.

Oh and that's my Toelke Whip and not my Widow. I've heard some complaints about the thumb rest on the whip but it shoots pretty good for me.

Thanks again Curt and everybody else!!

...he was with the doe, but the problem was that she knew I was there. She'd occasionally start down the hill toward me, almost to see I'f the guy she was smelling was till around....he'd follow. After doing this a few times I herd another deer coming form the west and soon saw it was a 4pt'r. I could tell immediately when the big guy saw him.....he started wrecking a sapling, and then made a scape...but his intimidation tactics didn't work...the small buck kept getting closer. Slower now,but he was still advancing. I knew what was coming, and I watched the big 8 so I could witness it thru my bino's....he unloaded a very serious sounding snort wheeze!

That was enough for the little guy...he now knew better than get any closer! He just stood for a while, but then started to circle the doe...the big boy started rubbing and scraping and again snot wheezed! This went on for about 30 min. till the big guy had enough and escorted the little fella away.....once the big figured he'd gone far enough,he quickly made his way back to the doe....and the little guy never looked back.

The doe repeated he decent down the hill evry once in a while to sent check if the smelly guy was still there. Then would simply walk back up the hill. As it got darker, she got braver....

Then I heard crunching from the NW and here comes another racked buck. By now it was heard to tell how big, but he was a nice buck for sure. Another snort wheeze indicated to me the the big 8 had seen him now too......

Slowly it got dark and I heard the smaller racked buck go toward the west.....and the doe and the big guy finally in the fading light made there way eastward.....what a day!!

Up till this hunt with Doug, I'd only hunted 3 days, and had only seen 2 deer.

I needed a day off, and to hunt and get into some good action. Doug coming in was just the excuse I needed.....it couldn't have been any better....well maybe if Doug had killed a deer....now that would have been cool!!!

Next year I'll be better prepared bud, I hope you make it back
