Title: SHREW CREW IS BACK
Post by: Ron LaClair on November 11, 2008, 12:32:00 PM
Another great time was had at Shrew Haven last week. We missed our buddy Ray Lyon this year because he switched jobs and couldn't get the time off to come to camp.   :campfire: ...   :(

Kevin Marshal also has a new job and couldn't get the whole week off but he made it up for a few days and managed to take home some venison.   :archer:

Most of the week was unseasonably warm which kept the deer from moving as much as they normally would at this time of year. But still everyone got a deer except yours truly.

Here's a picture of this years deer pole. Kevin had already gone home so there would have been one more hanging if he had been there.   :archer:

Left to right, Tim Cosgrove with a big Matriarch doe that dressed out at 140#. Greg (Chef) Nicolaou, myself, and Roger Norris. This picture was taken on Sunday Morning the day we left for home and as you can see, the Temperature had dropped and we had a skiff of snow on the ground.

One good thing about the mild weather it gave us the opportunity to enjoy the new deck that we built on the back of the cabin this summer.

Left to right, Roger, Tim, Kevin and Greg.

Maybe that's why I didn't get a deer because of spending too much time out there myself.    :biglaugh:

The cool furniture on the deck was purchased on the way to camp at a quaint little place along Hwy 2. They harvest the wood from the cedar swamps on their property and make the furniture out of it, and it's very reasonably priced. The look and style of it just seems to go with the ambiance of Shrew Haven.

I hunted a lot from my Hidden Hunter ground blinds this year. These are great blinds and are so quick and easy to set up and take down that you can change locations in a jiffy which is handy for when the wind or deer movement changes. We also had some rain on some of the warm days and there's nothing more comforting than listening to the rain on the roof of the blind while you're snug and dry inside.    :D

This is my new Green blind which as you can see is great for hunting in the pines.

*note the deer trail going down to the food plot in the valley.

Everything about your trip looks great to me.

I am waiting patiently for my new arrows from Paul. I am using my ACS bow this past weekend.

They must know I am out there...nothing...nada

Thanks for the pics Ron and the commentary...nice deer too.

No late nights in our camp, it's usually lights out around 8:30/9:00pm..."Dark thirty" (4:30) is when the gas lights are lite and the fire put under the coffee.   :archer:

Yes, it is the "Frontiersmen", mostly about the life of Simon Kenton, 1755-1836 and the Shawnee Chief Tecumseh, 1768-1813. I finished the book while I was in camp. Before I read the Frontiersmen, I read "The Dark And Bloody River" also by Allen Ecker about the settling of the Ohio river in the same time period. Good stuff about our areas history.   :readit:

I learned a pretty good lesson this year. Ron preaches often abouttaking a compass reading when a deer is hit. Sometimes I listen, sometimes I don't.....

I was in my favorite Shrewhaven spot on Banana Ridge when a shootable doe (not a fawn) came directly down the trail I was on. She paused at about 10 yards, with a sapling covering her front leg. All I had to do was aim left of the sapling, and double lung her.

Frankly, I made a bad shot. It was too far back, and went high through her gut. The exit was low, and the arrow made a complete pass through. She wandered off, not bolting at all, and I took a compass reading as I watched her disapear into the bush. I could see her with my binoculars, just a flick of the tail here and there. I waited 45 minutes, and then climbed down to look at my arrow. There was a small bit of stomach material, but lots of blood, and a solid blood trail.I suspected that my 200 grain Ace head had cut through her liver.

I followed the blood trail about 30 yards, and it was ample. I came to an area where she crossed a trail, and I thought I could see a deer laying in the thicket on the other side. I squatted to see under the brush...and she was staring at me!! I began to quietly back out (I had snuck in quietly, it's my habit to "stalk" a blood trail)but she got twitchy and blew out of there. I rembered the preaching, pulled out my compass, and took a reading on her departure. Then I went back to camp.

It was cool enough, and we decided to wait until morning. Wrong call. It POURED rain all night. When Greg and I went back in the morning, there was ZERO blood. I was glad I had marked last blood with toilet paper. I stood at that spot, re-sighted due north with my compass, and Greg and I walked right to her!!She had gone maybe another 50 yards and died in flight, not bedded. Odds are she died on that last run.

Thanks Ron, for another lesson in woodsmanship!

Kids...sometimes they listen...sometimes they don't      :knothead:  ...    :D      The tricks I've learned about tracking wounded deer over the years have come from being on many many blood trails and listening to and learning from others with more experience than me. You could almost write a book on what to do and what not to do   AFTER the shot.

Here's the big Ace Super Express 200gr head that I talked Roger into trying this year. You can see the dirt on the head after it passed through into the ground taking out one rib and part of another one on it's way through.

Another Shrew Haven hunt in the past...

Ron, the nice thing is, we can't all go to Shrew Haven and hunt.  Even though it looks like a little piece of heaven on earth and we'd all like to.  But when you post those pictures and write a little about it, well, just for a moment, I AM there.  As if I'm standing right behind you quietly gazing into  Armstrong creek, thoughts drifting... There's a gentle breeze, the strong scent of fall in the air, and the sound of the Armstrong ever flowing...

Thanks Ron!  For sharing Shrew Haven with all of us.  todd

It's an amazing place Todd. Cosgrove and I were down in a cedar swamp this year...past where Armstrong Creek joins the Brule. Ancient cedars, flat water, and across the river was Wisconsin. Awesome.

That blind blends in real well in the pines.

You know, with all the single bevel broadhead talk, I am "shocked" that a standard 2 blade bouble bevel head actually made it thru a deer   ;)

Dang, a guy misses a year up at camp and they run roughshod over ya.

Roger is selling me out to some no name pie baker    ;)  , Kevin Marshall took over my bunk and hung his wifes picture there and Tim Cosgrove sit's in my favorite stand site and shoots that smart old doe that's caused me fits the last tow years. With friends like that............

........it reminds me all the more how much I missed being in camp this year with the gang.     :(

The one story I missed seeing this year is the story of Roger missing the big buck. It seems like every year he has a close encountre with a nice buck that he either drops all his arrows out of the stand or forgets to flip the switch on his Shrew Scout recurve that turns on the accuracey package that is standard for the rest of us.  I always thought it was his version of quality deer management-let em go, let em grow- but perhaps I was mistaken?  :D

The furniture looks great on the back deck Ron. No deer this year? You must have fallen asleep in the new furniture when the deer walked by the cabin during the middle of the day like we've seen in the past.

I saw Greg on Sunday night after he returned and he said he gained 15 pounds. I guess there's one good part of missing out on camp. I warn you boys right now, the pictures moving, I taking my tree back and I'm making three pies next year!!   :readit:    :bigsmyl:

We sure missed you Ray! It was a good camp, but not having you around was noticable. We especially talked about you when we were dragging Cosgroves deer!

Nope, no big buck encounter for me this year. I did have a spike and forkhorn BRAWLING under my treestand, but my usual evening of choking on the buck of a lifetime didn't happen.

Don't worry about your bunk...Kevin likes it way up top where the air temperature is 150 from the woodstove. As far as your Trestle Stand, we just have to remind Tim that deer shot there go 100 yards STRAIGHT DOWN to the crick. He won't want ANY part of it!   :bigsmyl:

Title: Re: SHREW CREW IS BACK
Post by: Ray Lyon on November 12, 2008, 07:14:00 PM
Ron, what comes around goes around as they say, but based on what Timbo said on Monday, I'd keep the Basil Hayden under lock and key.     :readit:      ;)

Roger, Tim needs to learn a little about shooting deer out of the Tressel stand.  Heart shot's do no good. You must double lung them. If you do, they make it just to the top of the hill above the creek, where the trail is. With that kind of shot, it's a level drag to the pick-up zone 70 yards away.  By going through the heart, it gave that deer the extra 15 steps to get the downhill tumble momentum to the creek.  At that point you're better off floating them to the bridge an dragging them up the 4 wheeler trail. Oh well, you guys won't have to worry about that next year, I'll be back on guard.

Just as a point of reference for the readers, the Tressel Stand is in a pine tree near the Armstrong Creek at the edge of some aspen trees.  Over the years it has produced approximately 10-15 deer. Kevin Marshall made his first ever bow kill on a spike from that stand in 1998.  I once shot two does 15 minutes apart from that stand (1999 when I got my Super Shrew Samurai and those were the first two shots on game after owning the bow for 4 days). It's one of those special stands that's like an old friend.  Traditions are what make Shrewhaven so special and certainly our preferred stand areas (and bunks Kevin!!) are a part of that.    :campfire:

Post by: **DONOTDELETE** on November 12, 2008, 08:48:00 PM
Ray is generous with that stand, I have sat it 1/2 a dozen times or so. Ray, remember the year we kept seeing those sucidal spikes, and Ron wouldn't let us shoot them?! They looked like they were posing for a McKenzie photo shoot! I had to throw my GFA quiver at them just so I could climb down at night.

Jer Ber,
I admit the Shrewhaven camp is pretty darned cozy. Apple pies would be pretty tough to make in your setup. However, it doesn't matter what we put up for shelter, the gang up there is a flat out pleasure to be with each yeaR and the hunting is excellent.  That's a nice view from your tent by the way.

Yipper...the mountains in the back ground are our only BOW only zone and it's for Dall Sheep only....you can use a gun for other game in there (caribou are protected). Not ideal but you take what you can get.

Some nice grizz up there and we are going to concentrate on that this spring.

From the camp it takes about 2.5 - 3 hours to get on top with my horse and then I am into sheep all day. That year we had a heck of a time though because of the high winds early in july and the blowdowns were impossible to get around.

I only had 2 days up the mountain...sucked

Title: Re: SHREW CREW IS BACK
Post by: Jerry Wald on November 13, 2008, 08:34:00 PM
Well maybe. It's hard hunting up here though. They aren't as liberal about hunting here if you can imagine. Still fighting to be able to hunt Buffalo with a bow if you can imagine that. The bow zone for dalls is by lottery and you are lucky to get drawn every 2 years. Now there are lots of places to go that have sheep adn not a draw, but it's nice to go up there knowing it's bow only.

You really have to get of the beaten trail here though to see many animals. River hunts in late August and early Sept are great for bears and moose.

Caribou are packing in or fly in. Bears in Spring are plentiful. Goats are draw in most places. YOu can't shoot a fox with a bow and actually squirrels aren't on the list becasue they are fur bearing (trappers only). Can't hunt lynx and the deer are draw and I heard Elk will be opened next season for draw.

Well I would love to come down to your neck of the woods for a week hunt though. Just to be around people that can teach me more. I am a self taught archer/bowhunter and I love to watch video clips of Fred taking game and I read lots and this site is excellent.

Alex VanBibber (a native guide) on one of his trips here. I can't remember the one, but it was the one where fred is shown on horse back and they make camp. He sets up for a bowfish for a sockeye salmon. Then he gets a nice goat and then sneeks in on a grizz and gets him.

Alex is still around and I have talked to him about Fred and he says he was one of the few people he respected with a bow. He said he probably could shoot the eye out of a mosquito.

Dunno, but those videos are priceless to me. I don't have many with Howard Hill..not sure if they made many.

Some of the new ones are great quality video, but lack a bit on realism, but then again I haven't seen many beside the Youtube ones and they are probably not ones to judge from anyway.

So maybe someday I can bring my Shrew down and hunt with the Shrew gang once...even if it's a bunny hunt or a 3D range.....

Have a great season everyone and keep 'em coming it's great reading for the man from the frozen north.

Ron, Thanks for sharing Shrewhaven with us!

But Ron, you better be careful with those
Allen W Eckert books they can be habit forming. I ended buying a bunch on ****!(opps). Even called one of my longbows "Panther Passing Across" after I bought and read "A Sorrow in Our Hearts"!
No more do I associate "Tecumseh" with lawnmower engines.

Later I even went to the outdoor
A.W. Eckert/Tecumseh reinactment at Chillicothe O.

I hear you.  Fred Asbell got me started on them when he loaned me a copy of "That Dark and Bloody River". Then I read "The Frontiersmen" and am now reading, "Gateway to Empire" I've got a copy of "A Sorrow in Our Hearts" and will read that next.

Eckerts books are long but you can't put em down.    :readit:

Man do I know this as fact.  The laundry just keeps not getting done!  I keep thinking my husband will hide my book so his socks will get the attention they desperatly need!!!

They are a a whole lot better  than TV. I usually get my Atlas out while I'm reading so I  get a better picture where everything happened. I've also read the books you have mentioned Ron.

I agree that they're long but I find myself getting a little sad as I get to the end of the book I'm reading cause I know it will be over!

I picked the book up because it was huge.  Thought I would read a few pages and see if it was any good.  Hooked!  My husband has been reading James Alexander Thom books lately.  I had to show him up and read a fat one!  Great book.
