We do all our own baiting, cooking, skinning, and just have a lot of fun. Three of the boys just got back today from the first bait trip. Sixteen baits were put out for nine shooters right now. We are our own outfitters so everyone is equal. In the past 17 years we have had 100% on opportunities. These sites are not ever hunted over by anyone else...not like going to a commercial bear hunting operation.
Last year 2 of 7 bears were taken with the LDB bow.

I was within FEET of that bear! He came in right by my stand with a mate and kept standing up to scratch his back on closer and closer trees nearby-I thought I might have to scratch his back for him if he came to my tree! :scared: He would have been up past my head as my stand was beneath-my-chin high. I made what I thought was a perfect shot (Chase DVD "diaphragm" shot) :banghead: but we won't talk about that...actually we can talk on the long ride up! I am looking forward to meeting you!

I've been 4 times on hunts- I've seen Boo-Boo many times...but Yogi never shows up within range.
I'm pretty excited about being in camp with jeff and JC and Bob and meeting some new friends as well. Should be a fun event. :bigsmyl:

You have to come with me one day. Bears hunt me, I don't even have to hunt for them. So far I have killed 2 in two years and the fartherst shot was 10 feet. If I was a real man I would have waited and killed it with a knife right before it ate me. LOL!!! Alas I am a sissy and got trigger happy instead of pulling the knife.
I sure hope you connect on a big old bruin next month. Wish I could be there to fish, hear the stories and eat with you fellows. I bet that alone would be worth the cost of admission.

I shoot heavy bows, heavy arrows so we won't be worried about penetration- except a set of bear teeth penetrating my fanny...so higher is better in that regard. Make him work for his supper, if you know what I'm sayin'.

Bob and Bobby Walker leave early tomorrow morning on their trek to N.GA where Bobby will stay with my family while Bob and I are in the land of fat silky bears and thick toothy pike. Ray will meet us up there along with Tippit, Tom, and the rest of the crew sometime Friday evening. We are loaded for bear....literally....and anything else which happen upon our path. JC called this morning but I missed the call. I was playing dugout mom and yelling at boys. Had to wear JC's coaches shirt that says "Coach Joe" on the back. Can't tell you the looks I got...
Anyway, he said he had cell service (roaming) at that moment but didn't know if it would last. Also didn't know how much the call was costing!
I will let you know when I hear from them and try to get some stories...he did say that Tippit had the most awesome "man" room he had ever seen. You guys and your stuff.... :rolleyes:
They did get the cookies packed and I believe that JC only had to take out a few clothing items. He SHOULD still be fully clothed...if not, I will be wanting to know why...

No worries, David. We are fine....had a very bad storm last night with lots of lightning. Long story short....the boys and I were trying to get the horses in out of the storm and I guess lightning struck...somewhere. We were thrown to the ground and Chase was touching one of the horses and it threw the horse to the ground as well. I had a terrified horse and scared little boys and no power in the house. We were all fine and I lit candles and put them all over the house so they could see. They played board games and cards...Connor was the only one who said he was "a little scared". ;)
With Bobby's parents BOTH out of the country I keep saying Lord, please help me keep him safe!
They are out playing in the woods right now so all is well....
If anyone hears from the renegades, let us know!
I started to call Tippits wife to see if she has had any luck!

Border Bob got the big mamma jamma bear. JC got a small bear with the nicest fur he has seen. He wanted a pretty rug...FOR ME! ;)
Tippit picked out one last night that he is going to try and get tonight. JC said he wanted to take it with a stone head so he waited.
Didn't hear about Cosmic Ray's bear because they wanted to talk to the boys here and didn't know how much the call was costing.
That's the three Tgangers that have taken bears so far. He said everyone has seen bear and that they have had a great time.
I would imagine that being that far out they can't really get into too much trouble. Just tell lies and drink Tecate...probably no cookies left! Or Tecates for that matter....
I just had a thought...I bet that is why Bob and JC went to town...for refreshments!

JC was working on me before he left about a full body mount coming out of the wall over the fire place. I think that is why he was picky and wanted a "pretty" bear. He may still be working that angle, but I am set on a rug! :D

I know JC is in heaven being secluded like that. When we first started dating he said he had always wanted to live in a cave when he grew up. It's a guy thing I think...I convienced him that a log cabin was close... :D
I am sure the stories will take many a day to tell. We just have to make sure they all tell at least one each per day! They really do like to drag it out don't they....they all took lessons from Charlie Lamb. :notworthy: :campfire:

We have stayed busy and spent most of the hot part of the day in the pool. That has been nice.
Went to the Rome Braves game on Thursday night. They had a great time and got meet the players. Bobby came away with a ball signed by most of the players.
Taught Bobby the fine art of cleaning horse stalls on Wednesday.... :D Then yesterday we trimmed and groomed all the horses, gave them baths and the boys got to ride a little. Then it was back to the pool to cool off. Bobby rode the big Percheron and was shaking in his boots. We us a step ladder to get on her and his knees were quaking as he climbed that ladder! He made Connor go first to show him how it's done.
Once on he had a big smile on his face. She is an angel...just BIG!
Today we are off to a Low Country Boil at some friends house.

Of course I will let others tell you about their respective hunts so I’ll just share mine: I’d hunted bears a few times before including tagging a nice one last year on this trip so I was certainly used to seeing bears come in. All of the other bears I’d seen though had been rather timid; observing the terrain, circling, and certainly taking off whenever something alarmed them. Not this one. After hesitating only for a second near the top of a crest, my bear started to snort and pop and all that jazz while it followed part of my path right to my tree without any hesitation whatsoever! NO timidity at all! He owned the place! He put his foot up on this little mound below me and I confess that I was somewhat nervous at the boldness of this bear to put it mildly and thought of making a noise or throwing something at it before it actually touched my tree! (I should mention that my treestand platform is below my chin in height). However, when something did startle it- he took off like a bat out of hell! Needless to say I was relieved but only for a millisecond as this bear was NOT running away as I thought but only chasing something off! In fact, whenever he heard or smelled anything he only continued to charge it then huff and puff at it-including once in my general direction but fortunately pass me to the side of my stand! (I don’t care who you are-this is a sphincter tightening experience, let me tell you)! The area the bear was so fiercely guarding was between me and my truck and I did not so have the general encouragement from the bear that I was confident I would have free passage. So while it did not have the best coat I was looking for it was decent and of an acceptable size (4th of the 10 taken it turned out) and I decided the safest way out of the woods was to take it so I did! Heart shot! The bear dropped about 15 yards away! Wahoo! (with heavy doses of relief)! :biglaugh:
Just to put a “little cherry of top” of an unbelievably great time, I managed to “Robin Hood” one of my arrows! Of course I had everyone sign it. Uncle Barry’s message: “Now you’re shooting like me!” :biglaugh:
What a great group of guys to hunt with! I’ve made some great new friends and have already been invited to hunt all over the country! That’s the highlight for me! As Barry just said; it was absolutely perfect!

Tom, Allen, and Lloyd certainly did the the yeoman share of the work getting the baits set up for 12 hunters. Just a note on that, there were 17 baits sites that had to be freshened every day so it took everyones help. Everyone had shots some multiple on bears. Ten bears were tagged & brought to camp. The area is so dense that a few bears without blood trails were not recovered. Hopefully next year if my dog works well on some of the hides & bear blood that I brought home, we will have a little extra help. My hat is off to everyone who participated this year. Thanks...Doc

Got back at 1039pm last night..let's see..thats 1pm leaving from camp Saturday...arrive at Lloyd's place at 345am..load up, head out, stop for two hour nap near Hudson River in NY, get up at 7am and start..so that's 15 hours on Saturday/Sun AM riding, then 15 hours on Sunday to get home...note to self- that's what they make airplanes for!!!!!!!!!!!

We arrived Saturday mid morning after driving all night (much more enjoyable ride this year with Barry's story telling form the back seat). Then camp was set up and everyone dispersed to re-bait all the sites. I think only 4 of us went out the 1st night but 2 stands saw bears. I usually hunt the Moose Tower stand on the water and only heard a bear close to the stand that night. As the group can testify, he had to be close for me to hear him :biglaugh:
I decide to use my own selfbow this year cause Woody's glass & stone points where just too neat to pass up. Sunday, I heard a bear around 6:30 pm and saw him every 15 minutes or so but he was too nervous to make the commitment for dinner. He'd sneak half way down the hill behind the bait then run back up. The cat & mouse game lasted til around 8 pm. Then he sneaked in at almost a craw from my right. When he got even with my stand he looked at the tree and decided to sneak back out. Most of the time they aren't seeing you but are more afraid some bigger bear is going to chase them off the bait. Around 8:30 he finally came in but was still very nervous. I started to draw my bow and he looked up so I froze the draw. When he turned I pulled back and hit him solidly in the shoulder :( without any penetration. I guess I lost my concentration when he had stopped my draw. I had my video cam running so we could see the shot back in camp.
The next morning 5-6 of us did a grid search and didn't find the arrow or any blood. Now I'm questioning my ability to shoot my selfbow. I had so much wanted to take a bear especially in this camp with my selfbow and a stone head.

I had the privilege of filming this hunt for Tippit and I have to tell you it was a tremendous experience...sitting 6 feet above him in the tree, in the catbird seat, watching the whole thing unfold before me..even caught the death moan on camera's audio pickup.
Sorry for the nose of the bear- Jeff wiped it off and it just kept coming out- this bear had major blood leakage issues!

this is Eric handing Barry his bow as he is climbing into his stand...notice the platform height compared to Eric's head height- he's about my height 5'11"...the bears could stand up and reach the platforms in most cases.
That assured a flatter angle to help with double lung hits...bears are tough to blood trail and it helps when they drop in sight!

This is the Hope bear...Lloyd Bush shot the bow when we arrived in camp and loved it..so he switched and took this bear and made his photo and journal entries...the Hope bow's FIRST kill.
A great way to kick off the year for the Hope and Faith bows.

Resurrection, The Bowl, Moose Path, The Deli, The Long Trail, The Bird Stand, The Beaver Pond, 42, and on and on- every one of the names had a meaning to the group- when people do things like this it tells you what's in their souls..that it MEANS something to them.. they love doing what they do..and take great pride and pleasure from it.
It's the people we were with, in the final analysis, that MADE this trip what it came to be. Tom, Lloyd, Allen, Barry, Don, Brian, Jeff, Eric, Bob, JC, Steve- I had just a tremendous time with all of you in camp, baiting, on stand, at meals, laughing around the fire, even the rides back and forth- it could not have been a better trip.

This being the 19th year I have been fortunate enough to hunt & bait bears and I must say with 100% sincerity it was the best time of them all.Great guys,alot of Bear action on baits,quite a number of other spiecies spotted whitetails,Moose,lynx & even a Wolf 1st one in 19 years !!! There were also woodchucks,and too many grouse & hares to count !!
Less than 48 hours after returning from Quebec I have started the wheels turning for 2nd Annual Bear Quest spring 2008'.I am planning on 2- 1 week hunts 12 hunters.For those folks interested they might want to do some serious thinking about attending because there is much interest already.
It was a treat to hunt with JC again and the other Southern boys Bob Walker & Ray Hammond we had a blast.Bowdoc kept us laughing like you wouldn't believe,he could make Larry the " Cable Guy " wet his pants with his antics and stories.
Keep those photos comin Tippit,Ray,JC etc.
P.S. Hats off to Woodie Blackwell for making up the order for me for the 9 knapped heads,hope your move goes smooth and you need to make room in your schedule for 2nd Bear Quest next spring <>

Luckily I didn't see anything that night on the Raptor stand. After Big Bob took his bear, I switched to the Deli stand. Ray had already filled his tag and was anxious to get back on stand so he agreed to film me. That night we had a big bear come in 4 times and present at least a dozen great shots. Finally Ray couldn't take it anymore and leaned down to ask...too small :knothead:
Now we were down to 5 hunters and I felt like a kid at Xmas with anticipation...I was ready for some action! Notice my match stick/rubber band arrow keeper. I was going Primitive :)

A real nice bear with a great coat came in early and the shot was perfect...pass thru double lung cutting the aorta (yea I gave anatomy lesson at skinning time). As he turned to run back from where he came in, the arrow just fell out right in front of the crib. He went about 20 yards and we heard the death moan. As we tracked him the blood trail was great which you usually don't get with bears, the stone head opened a huge hole on both sides. in fact as we were looking on the ground, I noticed that my pants were covered in blood from the alder leaves on the trail. Ray had filmed the entire sequence...hence the Hollywood nickname!

I put para cord on all the unfinished knives. It sure gives a great grip with bear grease all around. It is harder to clean up though. Hot water on the cord made it manageable but when we were done I just cut the cords off. It only takes about 10 minutes to tie up a new handle so I'll probably keep the Best of the Bunch in para cord for new year. There will certainly be new designs next year as I kept tracing all the other guys favorite huntin' blades...especially JC's.
I wouldn't feel too bad for Big Bob though. He emailed me before the hunt saying he bought the TXS 07 knife but he was going to use it as a hunting knife...maybe even sand off the names :scared: I think that was a ploy to get pick of the litter as I traded him my personal sheep horn skinner (top of 2nd picture) for it...Doc

I'll start my tale chronologically so you guys can get the same feel of the hunt I had as it happened:
6/21/07: Bob and Bobby arrived late Thursday afternoon, a bit road weary and nervous with anticipation of the upcoming events. Good to see may old Comrade, flet as if we'd left Texas just a few days before...guess it's always like that between good friends. We spent some great time with the family, had a great meal and I finished a few last minute packing chores. Everything ready to go, we said our goodnights for the last time for 10 days. I slept fitfully, dreaming of large bruins just out of bow range.
6/22/07: Up and out early, Bob and I beat traffic to the airport; or at least I told Bob that but he wouldn't believe me. Atlanta traffic, even on it's best day, is still traffic. An hour and a half through security etc. we sat at our gate. A half hour before take-off I noticed there still were very few people at the gate. I checked with the flight attendent and low and behold, the gate had been changed from the time we got our tickets to security...we hussled to the appropriate demarcation point just in time to board. Only real pros should start a trip off that close to disaster ;)
Arriving at Boston, much smaller airport than I expected, Tippit met us curbside just as we exited with our bags. Sure was good to see him, life is simply too short to not have your hunting brothers with you at all times. Only problem was, he was there in a convertible! Now, Bobbo & Tippit have about 13 feet of legs between the both of them...coupled with all our hunting gear, we had an interesting time on our ride. Course, Tippit's main transpo was down and Molly had the truck...as any good horsewoman's husband about to be off for 10 days will tell you, when she asks for the truck, she gets the truck!
A short while later we arrived at Tippit's, followed closely by Barry Wensel and Steve (curveman). With our lunch, we feasted on constant stories flowing from Barry...to say I was a bit starry-eyed was putting it mildly. Just a down to earth, puts-his-pants-on-one-leg-at-a-time feller, Barry acted as if he had no idea I considered him a living legend in the tradtional bowhunting community. He continually impressed me throughout the trip with not only a constant stream of interesting and entertaining stories but his unassuming nature and an ever-present desire to teach those willing to learn. this was going to be a good trip :thumbsup: I promised Tippit I wouldn't post pics of his man cave (for fear that Molly would get thousands of angry calls from housewives complaining that their husbands had converted their basements into a den full of bows). Guys, you've not seen the likes of fine bows, collector bows, antler stacks, big horned mounts, dozens and dozens of arrows, fly rods, boots etc. in all your days. It was everything Tippit could do to run me out of there. Did I mention I knew already this was going to be a good trip?
We loaded...or overloaded as it were, our gear into Steve's truck, crammed 5 guys into the cab and proceeded to the meeting point 3 hours North. Barry's stories and the rest of the truck's laughter made it a short trip. Meeting up with Tom, Doc, Lloyd, Alan, Eric, Brian, and my brother Ray at Lloyd's shop; we loaded some more gear and headed out for the 10 hour drive to the camp.
Most of the rest of that evening was a blur...mainly a blur through the windshield as we drove through the night, swapping coffee filled drivers as each grew tired during his shift.
6/23/07: It gets light EARLY this time of the year that far North...we saw dawn somewhere around 4:30am, of course through the windshield. Our trip through the French/Canadian province reminded me how much French I had forgotten from my Cajun uncle.

As you can see from the photos I still have the problem of bottom of broadheads sticking out of bottom of quiver...but that's true of all of your competitors quivers as well except those heavy big headed suckers which I just don't want on my bow...so I will just have to live with it I reckon! cause I'm not changing quiver makers.
Bowdoc- miss you too, buddy. Stay away from that Marula- it's bad news for cheap dates.

A friend of mine from Denton Hill passed away from a brain tumor 2 years ago...Mike Churny. Mike made some beautiful selbows. He loved to hunt but he left us too early. I'd sit and talk with him, then buy at least one bow every year. I'd always ask the price than usually double it as he didn't have any medical insurance.
I always told myself some day I'd try to tag animal for him. When hunting season came around, I never seemed to have confidence in my selfbows. Well next year God willing, I'll be over a bait with Mike's bow & either my trade point or Woody's stone head. If I'm not lucky enough to fill my tag, that arrow will fly for every into the Quebec Wilderness...Doc

Licenses in La Tuque, where beleive it or not my cell worked, last message home before heading to the bush. An hour and a half down a gravel road found us at camp. Warm, dry cabins with propane fridges, a shower house with hot water, on a beautiful lake with constant breezes made it one of the most comfortable camps I've been in.
The great thing about this group was the universal pitching in....we had camp set up quickly and everyone unloading/putting away their gear. I will say again, and many more times to come, Tom, Lloyd, Allen and Eric did the lion's share of the work. Most of it, before we even got there on their numerous baiting trips. Thanks again guys, you just let me know if there's ever anything I can do for you.
Eric and I were chompin at the bit...while the rest of them rested in camp and continued with the chores, Eric and I suited up and headed out for the first sit. My palms were sweaty, my heart beatin fast, ADD was running rampant...my first date with a bear :bigsmyl:

All the baits had been hit hard, we refilled and discussed our choices. I was particularly interested in a stand called "mile marker 42" (though it was really kM42)...thankfully, Eric chose "The Glove". We were both happy with our choices and excited about what was to come....

Comfortable, I settled in with great anticipation. The stand was close, probably 8 yards, maybe 7' off the ground. I practiced my best imitation of moss...hoping I could be still enough for the animals that would be so close.
A few minutes after I settled in I was entertained by a constant procession of red squirrels, Canadian Jays, and chipmunks hitting the "sweet" barrel. I even had one come up into the stand with me and sit briefly on my head. He quickly retreated to the bush, knowing something wasn't right, but I was convinced my camo and my lack of movement would be fine at the close range.

I was slowly moving my head, watching a red squirrel and scanning the terrain...when I looked up at the main trail and there sat a bear! It just appeared...absolutely silent, unmoving, watching the bait area intently. It slipped around behind the trees, constantly checking the wind through curled lips, glancing over it's shoulder every few seconds...no matter which way it happened to be facing.
Slipping into the bait, it was very difficult not to take the first shot offered. Tom had given me very detailed descriptions of how they would act and when the best time to shoot would be. I was not used to mulitple opportunities in a season so I was pleased with my self restraint. The bear grabbed a mouthful of sweets and bolted for the brush. That's it, I thought...I've missed my chance. Funny how you look back on your thoughts and think how silly they were after the fact....

I do not believe you could ever sneak up close enough to a bear in the thick cover of Quebec with a bow to make it an effective alternative to using bait.
Additionally, baiting is useful because it allows you to make sure you are not taking a sow with cubs - you cannot see the sex differences in bears unless you have a lot of time to examine them- and even then its not cut and dried that you won't make a mistake..so baiting under these circumstances makes the most sense.

A huff from the trail the bear came down sent him careening off in a 90 degree turn. A second bear slipped through the brush in a circuitous route toward the bait. This one was a bit smaller but a much nicer coat. This bear was a bit bolder, still sitting watching the bait, but much closer than the previous bear. It walked towards my stand, never looking up, but obviously interested in where I had walked in. Circling the stand behind me, it finally came in to the bait. A tentative mouthful and off it ran...again I was afraid I had missed my chance. I had already decided I would shoot this bear if it gave me a shot. Finally the bear stayed at the bait, literally sticking it's front half into the barrel. I slowly rotated my torso for the shot...picking a spot mid/rear ribcage for the hard quartering shot as it reached in the barrel. Staying seated so as not to draw attention, I drew and released. The short distance made the flight nothing more than a blur, the bear exploding from the drum and turning an almost right angle to tear off down the trail...20" of shaft waving in the air.
The bear growled at the hit but moved so quickly I wasn't sure...it looked perfect...and the amount of arrow sticking out of the bear boosted my confidence...but a nagging feeling stayed. Too high maybe? No, it just couldn't be with where the shaft went in vs. where I thought the exit was. I heard nothing as it ran off...other than a crash 75 yards or so away. Was it down?
A very nervous half hour later I climbed down, checked the impact site for blood (none), and slowly crept up the trail the bear had disappeared down. 30 yards from impact I found the front 3/4 of my arrow...covered in blood. I slipped about another 30 yards and found no blood or bear. As it was close to dark and I had no desire to track a potentially wounded bear in the dark by myself, I crept back out to the pickup site.

Back at camp everyone was enthusiastic and heaped congratulations on me. We would go out and find the obviously dead bear in the morning. The nagging feeling remained...previously I had all but one trad-shot animal fall in site...or at least a fairly short trail. By the best of my ability, this animal would make 21 straight animals that had fallen without fail. To say I didn't sleep good was an understatement. Balancing between confidence of a good shot and trepedation over the fear of a poor one was agonizing. I recalled the bitter memories of lost game with my compound; there hadn't been many but I could clearly recall each...and did as I drifted off to sleep late that night.

Tom also was the first to find blood across the creek. We commenced trailing...finding enough blood to make the going easy for the first 100 yards or so. Soon thereafter though, it became sporadic...then downright difficult. Halfway up the steep, jungle-like hillside, we lost the trail breifly. I'll say this, I have been on a lot of bloodtrails...and think my self a pretty good tracker...but the team of trackers assembled with me made an increasingly difficult trail an educating experience. Ray complained of his vision difficulties at short distances so he worked "from a distance" pointing out blood from 20 feet away as we stood near it but couldn't see! One would lose the trail...only to have it picked up by another. On and on this went up the hill. Three hours or so later, we realized the bear had traveled a good 500+ yards, with no real blood to speak of. It never bedded, never went to water again...seemingly meandering through the woods non-plussed, switching trails at random. Eventually, the trail stopped. We searched, hands and knees in a 10-20 yard circle...the day grew hot and well past the time we had alloted for retrieval. My comrades sat quietly, waiting for me to make the hard decision. All agreed they would continue on if I wanted to. But with nothing to continue on with....the bile rose in my throat. It was somber...their best efforts to console me certainly eased the pain...and the history of past experiences, both my own lost animals and trials when I had stood in my friends shoes, brought the finality with less anguish than the first time I had experienced it. I certainly didn't throw a fit, and kept a good face for my brothers...but they each new the complex whirlpool emotions that spun in my heart.
Compass bearing back towards the road, we hoofed it down the hill. I lead, mainly to releave some of my own tension...privately reassuring myself the bear would be fine...I would get other opportunities and the next time would be different.
We broke out of the treeline to a gorgeous day....

Everyone was understanding back at the camp...veterans of their own such lost battles, it was good to be in the company of those that really understood the extent of the highs and lows of our chosen lifestyle.
Lunch was good, don't remember what it was but of course Bowdoc laid out a spread that filled 12 hungry bellies...and some of those bellies were used to super-size ;) Yet another heart-felt thanks to Don for all his culinary efforts, Tom and his crew for planning the larder so well, and everyone else in camp who pitched in with the cleaning of dishes etc.
Tippit consoled me privately, reassuring me there would be other chances. As we skinned a bear, can't remember whose right now because my knife was on most all of them at one point or another, he gave me a detailed anatomy lesson and his synopsis of the arrow's path. Lots of loose hide, fat, muscle....I had simply hit too high, never penetrating the ribcage and causing a superficial musclar hit. There's just no way that arrow could have gone into vitals from that angle and it not died very quickly. It helped...some :confused: .
After the chores, re-sharpening, and a few good laughs I felt normal, ready to sit the same stand in hopes that the bear would return and I could close the book on this upsetting chapter with a happy ending.
Eric and I left to bait and sit our same stands...

Bright sunshine beaming through the shade of the cabin made me think I had slept through the day...but the latitude proved to be the culprit as it was only 5:30am. We had some chores to do, moving our gear from the temporary cabin to the one next to the rest of the guys and bears to skin. It went quickly with much laughter and good natured prodding...as if 12 brothers were reunited after a long seperation.

Though the bait had not been hit since the baiting the day before, I liked the spot and looked forward to the evening hunt with renewed interest.
Back at camp for a quick nap and a bite to eat, we suited up. Jeff would hunt the stand Brian had killed a bear off of the night before, also on the water, I would hunt the new stand that looked so promising. Brian, now tagless, generously offered to ferry us out, dropping me first. As the boat pulled away, a gentle breeze cooled the sweat I worked up coming up the steep hill. The entertainment of squirrels, mice, and chipmunks began almost immediately...each one seemingly with their own individual personalities. The time passed quickly, but no bears showed. I heard a boat gently motor into the cove and took it as my cue to slip down. It was almost too dark to shoot in the woods anyway so I carefully picked my way down the hill.
In the cove, there was no boat...but the sunset made trip worth while.

We picked up Tippit who didn't have any bears either, but like me, he was smiling and having the time of his life.
I can't remember if it was that night or the night before that we ate steamers: steamed clams with melted butter...and rainbow trout. To say I ate too much was an understatement, but it was absoultely unavoidable. The hunting camp, good friends, superb food...it was a recipe for revelry. By this time Bowdoc, Bob, Steve, Eric, Brian, and I believe Ray had all killed bears. Barry's stories, Bowdoc's antics, tales of the succesful hunts from the rest flowed freely. It is a night permanently etched into the pages of my memory.

6/26/07 New baits were chosen this morning; I was interested in a place where Ray shot his bear, "The bowl". Barry would go back to the stand where he had numerous encounters, Tippit would try a spot where he thought he would have a chance with a stone point.
After the skinning chores (seems like we were always skinning :thumbsup: ) and baiting duties, I spent about an hour in the treestand behind camp shooting my broadhead into the 3D bear under Ray's guidance. I was determined not to make the same mistake twice...and Ray was instrumental in getting my head back in the game from the last botched encounter. I soon realized why I had missed: from a seated position, which I never shoot from, my lower string was hitting my thigh at full draw, raising my bow slightly right before release. Even at the short range it was causing me to hit high. Many shots later, I felt like I could comfortably shoot at the steep angle and stay sitting.
It may not be a big deal to those with many more years of experience, but I certainly learned something I had not experienced before while on that stand practicing. The more I learn...the more I realize I don't know and the more I want to learn. Never having shot from that position/angle, I took it for granted it would be a slam dunk. But lessons learned hard are not easily forgotten.
Another equipment check and sharpening session...I was confident and hopeful as we geared up for the evening stand. Allen and I headed out for the long ride to the stand. "The Bowl" was set off of a beautiful scenic lane...single track...staying true to the lush, rainforest views we had seen so far.

Allen left with exchanged "good luck"'s and I settled in for another anticipated hunt. I had not sat long before I saw black far up the main trail. It still baffled me how these animals could simply "appear" without a sound. It was a fairly large bear...my palms began to sweat and I struggled to remain in control of my breathing. I hope that thrill never goes away!
The bear came in a bit less cautiously than I expected. He stopped a few times on his round about route to check the wind and look at the bait, but basically walked right in. It was very difficult to pass up this bear, the biggest I had seen yet, but the coat was mostly gone...there was far more skin than hair showing. I decided to just wait and see what else came in. The bear posed in every conceivable angle...even laying down with his head across his paws at one point. During one of his snacks, I saw movement in my peripheral vision at the top of the hill...but it was brown not black. Interesting....and the big bear thought so too! Vaulting over the bait and brush stacked behind it, he tore off up the hill in an explosion of donuts, the brown form turning inside out in an attempt to disappear before the big bear made it to the top of the hill. This time, they made noise!

They both stayed gone for longer than I expected. I suppose the big boy wanted to make sure brownie wasn't coming back. Again I noticed a black form that had simply appeared in the few seconds it took for my eyes to scan the trails...but this was a different bear. I could only see his front torso as he walked towards me, not as big as the first bear but a beautiful coat.

I had a great moment walking into a nice sow with a yearling cub, she woofed at me treed the cub and made noise in brush off the trail to let me know she was there. Saw another good one in the headlights coming down the logging road the second night we were there, but that was the only other off bait sighting.
We had a great time, I'm thinking about going back in September since I still have a fall tag, I'm guessing the bruiser dosn't see any pressure in the fall, might be a little easier to trap.

Another black form appeared on the main trail...maybe they should install a traffic light there so the bears wouldn't run over each other? This bear was smaller but not nearly as fearful as the last one. Within a few minutes it had circled the bait, giving me a first look at a very, very prime looking coat. The fur was thick and lush, with one tiny rub spot on the back leg.
In to the bait, a bite, retreat a few yards away. I got 2-3 good looks and the green light went off in my head...this was the bear. Glancing around to make sure one wasn't watching me to sound the alarm (had deer do that and it only takes once). I slowly raised my bow into position. Concentrating on the spot as she sat broadside I began my draw...ever so slowly but committed to the shot now...only her moving would save her now.
She rotated slightly as I neared anchor...I let down partially and waited, she was still oblivious to my presence. Now I really wanted this bear, I could see every ripple in the hair...
She reached forward and rotated more broadside...half step on the side nearest me...the string solid in my deep hook. The pressure increased, the bow loaded effortlessly...all I could see was where I wanted the arrow to go....

The bear rolled and howled, doing a complete sommersault and landing in a "dead" run going back up the main trail....
One, two, three bounds and it arse-over-tea-kettled sliding to a stop less than 12 yards from the point of impact.
If you've never heard the death moan of a bear, you have missed one of the truly unique sounds in the animal kingdom. Invigorating triumph, hair raising fear, gut wrenching sorrow all ran through my heart as she wailed her last three breaths, decreasingly lower in volume each time.
The woods were silent....the bear lay still...

Unmoving, I knocked an arrow anyway, cautiously approaching from the rear. As I gazed into her glassy eyes I realized she was indeed mine at last. I knelt and gave thanks to God for his generous gift...her fur was as deep as my fingers could reach, thick and luxuriant.

The head was indeed special, not only an old pearson deadhead, but a head that had belonged to my late great Uncle Tommy. Tommy died right before the Paradise hunt last year...I received a box of a few of his things after the funeral and this head was in there. I was very happy to see it perform so well (even though I've killed animals with deadheads before)...Tommy would have been proud. My first bear and he was still able to share it with me....yet again another moment I hope to recall for many years to come.
My favorite Morrison recurve had taken yet another animal...cleanly and proficiently. It feels like an old friend by now...one that stands by me when the chips are up or down.

I sat and admired her for some time.
Gathering my gear, I attached my drag rope and began the short haul to the road. She was only about 80 #'s so the job was easy...made all the more so by adrenaline afforded from the sweet taste of a cleanly taken animal.
I left her just off the road/trail...covered with my harness and all my gear but my bow and therma-cell, hoping the smell would prevent any large boars from making a meal out of her. It was still hours from dark and I was savoring the sensory overload of the sights and sounds of this foreign land. I took off up the road towards a scenic spot Allen had told me about....counting my blessings and replaying the recent events over and over in my mind.

Allen showed shortly before dark, listening intently as I babbled and giggled like a school boy after his first kiss. He grinned the entire time, nodding his approval as I recounted the tale. Then I paused long enough to realize I hadn't asked about his evening...but I'll let that story wait until we get the video posted. Trust me, you will NOT want to miss it.
We loaded her up into his pickup and headed back to camp in the dark.
Greeted by some of my dearest friends, hugs and back slaps covered me with genuine affection. Everyone was glad to see the previous sad ending had been vindicated...they shared equally in the joy of my clean kill.
I don't remember much about the food or fire, other than I would not have been anywhere else on earth at that moment than with fellow brothers of the bow....
I slept well that night.

I have to say "Hats Off" to Tom, Allen and Lloyd for their hunt preperations. I can honestly say that I've never been on a more fun hunt!! Traveling and overnighting with Barry was a treat in itself even though he snores like Mount St. Helens erupting. I swear my bed shook and he was in the next room! And the icing on the cake for me was leaving Quebec with not one but TWO Tippit knives. It just don't get any better than this!! I was able to share camp again with a few old friends and for the first time with some new ones. I even met up with one "Old Friend" that, even though I've never shared a campfire with in this life, I know I have in another life. Don, I love you, brother, and I promise we will share many campfires in the future!
Well, I gotta get some shuteye now, got an early start in the am.

6/27/07 I got up early and took my fly rod to the boat. I had promised my Pop I would fish Canada no matter what. Tippit and I had already seen some promising spots that would provide a shallow water fisherman some opportunity in this deep, cold lake. Last night's bear was a surreal dream...the reality hadn't really sunk in even as I smoothed the pelt before I left the camp this morning. The day was wet and a bit cold, but I didn't feel it as I motored across the chop on the lake...again replaying the past days of the trip in my mind. I'd already seen more bears on this trip than my lifetime combined.
I picked up a few small pike and perch on my 6wt. For me, it was enough. I headed back to camp for a Bowdoc breakfast.

After breakfast we went to work on the bears. While skinning mine, the rain came and we moved the table under the canopy. Ray took some excellent pictures of an anatomical post-mortem, he'll be along here shortly to share them for any future bear hunters. Like every other big game animal I've hunted, skinning one out and doing a thorough anatomy evaluation makes a big difference in knowing exactly where the vitals are. You can see it in drawings all you want, but seeing it as it actually is becomes a valuable learning tool.

Barry and I went out Saturday with Tom and Allen as soon as we got our gear stowed- to make a baiting run. I wanted to see some of the setups first hand and get an idea of where I might be hunting.
We ran 6 or 7 baits and it was obvious to me this was going to be a good bear hunt. There were many trees around these bait sites that had been bitten or clawed by the bears and the bark ripped down to the roots so the bears could lick the cambium layer of the tree and obtain what's required to get their digestive systems back up and running after coming out of hibernation.
The ground around the bait sites was clear of brush, spots up over our heads marked up by claws, and at least 3 or 4 heavily worn trails moving into every bait we looked at.
There was something about three of the baits which I felt made them better candidates than the others, but only slightly. Deli, Bowl, and Resurrection. They decided to put Bob on Deli, me on The Bowl, and Barry was happy with Resurrection so it was decided.
On the way back from baiting, Barry said he was feeling a little whipped and thought he might sit out going to stand- worried about fallng asleep etc..and I thought that was a great idea as I had actually driven 9 hours Thursday, 10 hours Friday, plus a stop at Cabela's in Pennsylvania and a late lunch near Hudson NY with my friend Alex Bugnon-then rode up with Lloyd all the way to camp Friday night/Saturday morning, so I followed suit.
We set up a practice treestand and some bear targets.After setting up our bows we shot some practice arrows. The fellows who wanted to sit that first night went out, and the rest of us busied ourselves around camp.
The evening was quiet until Bowdoc showed up with his 'first and fastest' bear..and announced he would be the chief cook from that point forward! I for one am glad he did as he treated us to some fine meals during the course of the week.
On Sunday afternoon the whole camp got out on stand. I made it to The Bowl around 5, with Allen dropping me off- as we walked in quietly we bumped a bear off the bait- a pretty good sign, I figured. Allen came in with me to bang the barrel a little and make it sound like normal baiting activity while I got squared away in the stand. That accomplished, off he went with well wishes for a good evening.
As the vehicle started up and drove off, fading into the distance, there was nothing but the quiet, at least to city dwellers that is - but it's anything but real quiet in a forest- birds, bugs, the wind whispering in the birch leaves and caressing the needles at the tops of the spruces seemed to wrap its arms around me and tell me I was where I was meant to be- peaceful, yes, quiet, no.
I sat there analyzing the different trails coming to the stand, to see if I could determine which direction the bear might come from.The wind was blowing from my left, and angling toward the road we parked on.
While I was doing that, a black form appeared straight in front of me..moving slowly..stopping often to stick its nose in the air - for me- for a sow-I'm not sure..(most bears here seemed a little cautious coming to bait,I gathered by the end of the week) which squares with having high bear numbers and them wanting to keep from getting their rear ends kicked, as lots of boars were moving around trying to find a sow in season at this time of year.
The bear seemed to have a great coat, and was the largest bear I'd had come within shooting distance on three previous bear hunts where I never took a shot because the bears seemed too small.
In about 5 minutes the bear veered off the main trail coming in, and went to the right apparently wanting to circle the bait before coming in.
When the wind from the bait barrel hit his nose, however, all plans to circle left him and he turned on a dime -moving straight to the bait - immediately grabbing a piece of pork.
I was planning on waiting for him to get comfortable, but with his body broadside, his left foreleg moved forward I figured "why wait?"
He was five yards in front of me and in less time than it takes to tell I drew from my seated position, anchored, picked my exit hole and the arrow appeared through the side of the bear in exactly the spot I wanted it to, doing a "Steve Martin"- half way out each side.
The bear roared and exploded out of there, reversing his route in. He snapped the arrow off and both pieces landed on the ground about 4 yards down the trail. He ran angling up the sidehill route he came in on and just about 2 seconds after leaving, he began rolling down the hill, and came to rest against a log.
I immediately heard the death moan- three times- softer each time- as JC says, there is not a sound quite like that anywhere in my experience.
And that was it- all the weeks of hunting prior bear trips with no success, two weeks of anticipation about this hunt- in a matter of 25 minutes from being put on stand, it was OVER.
I waited 5 minutes, but there seemed little reason to continue as I was watching the bear through my Leicas and he did not move once. So I decided rather than sit here and stink up the site, perhaps messing up the bait for someone else, I got down, got my gear together, and moved over to check my bruin.
A great blood trail I didn't need to follow led me to my bear. I sat there a few minutes looking at his coat and impressive claws and teeth, grabbed a leg to drag him out to the road.
He didn't move much at all. I pulled a little harder- and felt something in my gut twinge. I needed help. I also thought about pulling him all that way and realized it might mess up the coat, which I wanted to get soft tanned, so off I went to get the vehicle and help.
I did not know exactly where Allen was but knew the general area so headed out to get the vehicle and back to camp for some strong backs.
I walked by the river, about 2 miles to the dead end, and turned left, heading away from the main road, where I thought Allen should be parked.
Another two miles though, brought me to another intersection-I checked tracks in the road and really could not determine where he had gone, so I decided to head back to the dead end, and wait there until dark rather than risk missing him.
I rounded the first corner going back and a small paddled bull moose walked across the road, going up a hill which I later learned put him on a path toward a stand I think was called "the Ridge". Cool. I like meeses.
I waited, watching a huge variety of birds, a red squirrel getting nabbed by an owl, and just as it got too dark to see,here came Allen. It had been exactly 4 hours since I shot my bear.
We exchanged stories about our luck, and decided to retrieve my bear. On our arrival,Allen checked the bear and said it was a decent one- above average for the area. He wanted us to grab it up and walk out with it.
My hernia had other ideas though. I asked if we could tie it to a pole and walk it out that way and Allen agreed. We did, and with some difficulty I picked up my end of the bargain and we walked him to the truck- I fell twice trying to get over logs but no harm was done to anything but my pride.
We got back to camp and learned that several of our folks had been successful. It was a night full of celebration and congratulations. We would retrieve those still unrecovered, take photos, and skin them all- in the morning.

6/27/07 Cont'd
After the rain came through and the bear processing was over, I took Steve out for a fishing foray. Sadly, the high pressure rolled in right after the storm and what started out as a pleasant morning catching fish, turned out into a nice boat ride. Back at camp we chose duties for baiting runs, chores and a trip into town.
Tom, Bob, Ray and I made the hour and a half trek into La Tuque. Sometime during this trip, and I can't remember what day, I learned a valuable lesson about Canadian gravel roads. I was driving Lloyd's truck with Ray, Brian, and Tippit inside to go check out a beaver pond. Now Canucks drive about 150mph (or 240km/h as it may be)on roads covered with ball bearings that pass for gravel. There was a guy trying to rub the chrome off of Lloyd's rear bumper, so being the considerate southerner I am, I pulled over. Now thankfully Ray is VERY loud when he's near death...because as I pulled to the shoulder, Ray politely informed me shoulder was simply a pile of loose gravel between the hard road and a 30' dropoff down through the "brush" (the brush turned out to be treetops). The situation was so severe, our normally calm and composed Tippit even uttered a few kindly phrases about my driving ability. As luck would have it, Lloyd's diesel is 4wheeldrive and about 1000 horsepower...a minute later we were back on solid road with only crease down the middle of each seat to show for it (pucker factor was about 12 on a scale of 1-10). Needless to say, I cared nothing for driving after that (nor do I think they would have let me anyway). I had walked the shoulder in a few different spots and it was solid as the roadbed...but this area was different. It would have been helpful to know such information BEFORE I had been on Canadian roads, so I'm passing it along "DON"T PULL OVER!" :scared:
Anyway, my cell worked in town so we all made a call, picked up some groceries, and bought a $30 pizza. Now it was the best pizza I've ever had, but dang....$30!! :saywhat: It's kinda tastes like bailey's with a hint of fruit/orange/chocolate. Very pleasant, but a bit rich for me.
On the way back to camp we baited up Tom's stand and left the last piece of pizza in front of the barrel...a lil something extra for a big bruin.

Joe...you do have some story telling talent their Bud...really enjoyed your writing. Among many things, your youthful excitement and joy really came through and brought back to the surface some feelings I have remembering back to my one and only bear harvest...they are special arent they? Although this was a remote area, it was accessible by car. The owners of the fish camp obviously had many other guests pursuing what the camp was most famous for so we did have to tone it down to a dull roar when we got in late at night. However, this did not attract from our experience in any way...we all looked forward to our late night camp fire sessions.

In one of the trad vids, they shot a bear over the bait and in the blink of an eye, he was 20' in the air in the tree BEHIND the bait station! I mean...it was lightening fast!

We were fortunate to have extremely cool weather for this time of year in LaTuque with the coolest being 51 degrees one evening.One evening was lost for hunting due to thunder/lightning.We still had fun around the campfire and caught up on some well deserved sleep.I started hunting the 3rd night my usual ritual seeing as it is more important to me to see that everyone has a great hunt than myself killing a bear.As luck would have it I had quite a bit of Bear action be it the beautiful SOW & 3 CUBS I got to admire on 2 different evenings or the 2 different bears I watched the FIRST morning I have ever sat in a BEAR stand on a SPRING hunt ! Everything came to a head on the LAST evening of the hunt when TIPPIT aka DOC-TARI came into to be camera man for me.This would be the 2nd time we where on the bear stand together since we became friends,the 1st time being when the tables where turned and I was cameraman for TIPPI.That evening he arrowed a bear,BUT my camera detected DEW and I was not able to get footage.This occured BEFORE TIPPIT was fitted with hearing devices and I communicated with him from treestand above by tapping him on shoulder with curved branch that measured about 4 feet long :-) What fun that was.
I decided to do a HONEY-BURN my last night of hunting in hopes it might entice a BLACK-GHOST into the bait site with plenty of shooting light left.The burn worked great puffing white smoke (several perfect smoke rings)for close to an hour the wind direction was in our face causing the Sweet Aroma of the simmering honey to satisfy our Sweet-tooth.
About 8 pm we got our 1st glimpse of a bear behind the bait about 70 yards off,Tippit & I are unsure if it was the same bear that appeared about 40 minutes later or not.The 2nd bear tip tiptoed in without making any noise coming into about 7 yards,but after standing there for about a minute or so then dissapearing back behind bait.About 15 minutes later I heard one branch snap and in he came again only stopping short of bait to munch on some scattered bait from evening before that I missed when we rebaited earlier in the day !! To avoid a bear from stopping short of bait and satisfying his hunger with bait scattered about out of range I always make it a point to pick up scattered bait and place it in drum or wired bucket at bait site,I did not see the scattered bait this time !! I figured the jig was up.Luckily the nervous boar had a big appetite like all my friends in camp and he commited to the right side of bait crib.I had to keep telling myself to wait until he is commited and fully engrossed in feeding until I let bowstring slide away from my fingers.With the baits being about 18'away the slightest noise will alert bear when at bait so I took it for granted TIPPIT had the film rolling and did not motion to him nor even look up!! As it turns out the arrow was captured in flight as it entered the right side of Bear,the yellow fletch showing up plain as day.We did not move a muscle once the bear ran off hoping to hear the tell-tale " death moan which by the way is NOT the bear bellowing in pain,BUT the air escaping from diaphram as the bear expires.TIPPIT captured all that audio as well even though his bionic ears could not pick it up.I looked up at him and smiled and we climbed down and walked to the bear which traveled about 75 yards.The selfbow & WOODIE BLACKWELL glass knapped head (made from Computer Monitor glass) worked flawlessly and I was able to recover fletch end of arrow where it broke off as he made his last run.The head and foreshaft was recovered when JC & TIPPIT so kindly skinned & boned out my bear on last morning as I helped in breaking down camp.I plan to reglue arrow back together :-) Thanks Woodie for the " WORKS of ART " you fastened to the RAPTOR archery wood arrows I sent you.The bear I arrowed on the bait site called the " DELI " had 3 claws missing from one paw,his coat a bit thin in spots but all in all a good Quebec Spring bear specimen.For me this hunt will never end because I can replay the entire adventure over & over again in my mind.I apologize for not submitting a photo of bear as we came upon it,I am better at doing the grunt work than the electronics end of a hunt.As the saying goes " A man must know his limitations "

Well although 2nd Annual BEAR QUEST is almost a year away I have started planning already to TRY to top 2007' Quebec adventure.

About the points system, you are correct. We work on the points system too....it works well for us! Although it seems that bad behavior decreases the value of your points and they do expire. :rolleyes: JC says he can "feel" my eye roll. Guess that's what happens after 16 years....

I was going to wait for JC to post some video, but since he was too busy chasing bacon with Ray this weekend, I'll tell the story. I'm not the author that JC is but here goes.
Saturday after the long drive and spending the day baiting and picking out stands for Barry, Bob, and Ray, we all decided to skip the afternoon hunt and relax back at camp. With the shortage of time I decided to skip baiting my stand and bait it Sunday.
Sunday Barry, Bob, Ray, And I went to bait again and fine tune their stands. Again I decided to skip baiting my stand and was going bait when I went in to hunt. That afternoon I dropped Ray off and did the 2 men in and 1 out strategy that seems to be very effective. When I arrived at my bait for the first time since the week before I was disappointed to see that all the bait was gone. I didn't know how long the bait had been gone and was worried if the bears had given up on waiting for a refill. I rebaited and climbed into the stand for a peaceful but uneventful night.
Until I went to pick up Ray. But you already know that story.
Monday we baited again and my stand had not been hit so I decided to hunt the stand that Curveman shot his bear because there were still multiple bears hitting the bait. That night I had plenty of action starting with a smallish bear wearing a beautiful thick coat. Tempting, yes, but another bigger bear was lurking in the shadows. Until this little bear decides he didn't like him and chased him off. Then came back to fill up on sweets. It wasn't until he was full that he left and the other came back for his share of cupcakes. This bear was a decent bear but after seeing Erics 190something pounder already in the freezer and a TIPPIT knife on the line I decided to wait for a money bear. He stayed around most of the night a posed nicely for several photos. Right before light started to fade he left and made room for what seemed to be a bigger bear and with a perfect coat. But with the low light and my beginner rank of traditional archer. I did not feel comfortable taking the shot. Besides it was still early in the week, so I just sat and enjoyed the show.

Our percheron got out of the pasture (still no idea how or where) around midnight Tues night...was hit by a car. Totaled the car, no humans hurt but dealing with the legality of all that. Horse miraculously had no serious broken bones and should eventually recover save for the 20 some stitches we put in. Long night and rough day yesterday.

Back to the story.
Tuesday while checking baits I noticed the action picking up on my original stand and decided to hunt it. JC decided it was time for a change and I dropped him of at Ray's stand which was still seeing alot of activity. Did the 2 men in and 1 out again and you already know what happened there. On to my stand. It wasn't long before I had a real nice bear with a perfect coat came in. But being real spooky he stopped just shy of the barrel and back out. About 45 min. later I here a twig snap turn to see a bear under my stand to the right. It looked just like the one I had seen earlier but a little bigger. Here I thought I would have a beautiful rug and possibly TIPPIT knife to take home. No, about 30 seconds behind her were triplets. So I hang the bow up and decide to try another photo shoot but with video still rolling. As I am taking pictures something spooks the cubs and they scatter. One decides to come visit me and climbs the tree just inches from the corner of my stand. flying right by me and the rolling video. I have never been so nervous in my life. All I could think of was the saying "Never get between mama and her cubs". I did not want to get down with mama wondering around below my stand and baby above me. I didn't think the cub would come down when he realized I was there. I had no idea what to do. So I figured that I would just sit tight and hope that a big boar would come in and chase mama off long enough for me to make a run for it. I also figured I would take the video camera off the tree pod and if I did get mauled I could record it so everyone would know what happen when they found the camera. Kind of like the grizzlyman video. Atleast you would here me screaming like a girl.
As I sat and watched mama I noticed that she did not seem aggressive at all. Just pacing and calling to the cubs. The other two cubs came down and met up with mom and the one next to me really wanted to come down but wasn't sure if it should.
Finally he decided Him or I had to go first and since I wasn't moving he was going to give it a try. Watching me the whole time he slowly came down and vocally too. He actually hung from my bow hook for a second and stopped to sniff my pack as he passed me at about 12 inches. And I got it all on video. What a relief it was to see him hit the ground and meet up with mama and siblings 20 yards behind my stand. Mama was still hungry so she came back in to eat. As it was gettng dark mama wondered back to where the cubs were and I decided to get out while I could. The family was still close by and as I was walking up the trail mama started to get more aggressive. She started woofing and popping her teeth and even false charging three times at about 10-12 yards. She paralleled me all the way to my truck and was still woofing as I was putting stuff in the truck. What a night.

Thursday I went back to my stand hoping to see the big bear I got a trail cam photo of or the first bear I had seen on tuesday. I was there a while before I had a smaller bear with another perfect coat come down the trail I came in on.

I watched him for a while and he left.
Within minutes I here a bunch off noise coming down the hill. I'm thinking it's a herd of moose but look up to see mom and children again. They came in like they own the place and I'm thinking not again. Well after about 5 min. of cubs wrestling and playing they must not have been impressed with my video skills because they deside to do Take 2. They scatter and up the tree one comes. This time I already have the video camera in my hand from videoing the first bear and got the cub going all the way up the tree as best I could being so close. This time mom stays closer and starts popping her teeth. I am still nervous but not as bad as the first time. Within seconds the mother settles down and grabs the barrel with her teeth and pulls it out of the crib. Then sticks her head in and starts eating like nothing ever happened. I videoed the other two cubs and mama for a while until my buddy decides to start coming down the tree. Clip #2 that JC posted is of what is happening now. The cub tips his head back and sniffs my bow on the hook and then looks right in the camera. At this point he is less than 8 inches from the camera. With the bear this close I think of the question Tom asked when I was telling the story two nights earlier.
"Did you try to touch him?" Being a little more relaxed this time I had to try. In that clip after he looks in the camera upside down, You will see the camera go to the right a little. That is because I wasn't paying attention to the camera anymore. I was reaching for the cub. I had just brushed his fur when he jumps to to back side of the tree and looks at me. I wish I could have grabbed some fur to take home. The clip that JC posted ended just as he jumps to the back of the tree. Then he climbs back up a couple feet not knowing what to do. At one point as he is looking down toward mama I sniffed and he looked at me real quick with a surprised look on his face that made me laugh. That was too much for him to handle and he went back up the tree. As he was up there I could see he did not want to come back down by me. He kept trying to find another tree he could jump to but with no luck. Finally he came down but never coming to my side of the tree. When he got down this time they all left together. Yet another exciting night in the canadian bear woods.

I took my bear from that stand last year and that is a very low stand to have Mama bear right below with a cub above!!! Allen (NY) you tell it with such humor but I think you showed real courage to keep filming like that! :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: Don't worry though, had the worst happened we would've dubbed out the "girlie screams" and added in some of Uncle Barry's snoring to make it sound like you went out like the ferocious beast you are! :biglaugh:

I thought last years hunt was the best ever when I was lucky enough to take the biggest bear in camp with the LDB bow...course there wasn't a tippit knife at stake then ( but I know the maker ;) ).

Guys, I've never cared much for most selfbows cause I couldn't shoot em well or didn't like how most shot. Eric's bow was an exception...he really builds a very sweet shooting stick. Hope he can find the time to share some of his experience with the rest of you wood scrapers...

This year was different. Iv'e been hun ting local deer with a longbow for 16 years or so and with selfbow only for the past four seasons. With some success. It was time to go bear hunting. Called Tom, and said "yes"! Decided to make a bow just for this trip. Had a piece of osage I got locally and a bunch of leg sinew from bow kills I'd been saving for my first sinew-backed bow. After a lot fo work and a few phone calls to Mike Yancy I had my bow: 52 lbs. at 26", sinew backed, osage, bull snake and horn tip overlays. Let's go hunting.
June 21st: the day before the hunt TOm calls and tells me the meeting place and who the "Mystery Guest" is. Just a little intimidated! My first bear hunt and Barry Wensel has to be there. Just Great!
June 22nd: Finally arrives: very nervous, first hunt away from home, 7:30 pm the gathering begins, meet everybody, load trucks, on the road 9:30 or 10:00. The long drive. After lots of coffee and various energy drinks we arrive in La Tuque, Quebec.
Sat. June 23rd: Arrive in camp aroung 1:00 pm, all work together. Camp set up in no time at all. Tom sends everybody out to check baits and decide what stands to sit. Tom, Bowdoc, JC and I gather baiting stuff and head out. Check milemarker 42, the glove, black label and I think longtrail, not sure. All but Black label, which was a new bait, had been hit good. On the way in to check the last bait, we spot something on the trail ahead. Get to the spot and there on the side of the trail is a lynx, maybe 5 yards. Very cool. Nobody has a camera. Bummer! Get back to camp, JC Bowdoc and myself decide to hunt. Didn't drive all this way to stay in camp. I didn't see anything but hares and squirrels, the first night. Bowdoc got a bead, JC arrowed a bear, thinks it's a good hit.
June 24th: Wake up early, make coffee, decide who's doing what. JC, Ray, Tom and myself check baits and start trailing JC's bear. Hopes are high in the beginning. After a long trail and little blood, Tom asked JC what he wants to do: it's never easy giving up on a blood trail. JC decieds to call it off and with heavy hearts we head to the truck. Back at camp, we eat lunch, ready for hunting. I'm to drop JC off at Milemarker 42 and head to The GLove. On our way to the truck my roommate, Mr. Barry Wensel, says to me"Hey Roomie, don't choke tonight. Ha, Ha, Ha"! With that in my head, we head out.
Drop JC off, arrive at the GLove, get set in my stand, listeneing to the creek babbling and the annoying chatter of squirrels. Movement to my right catches my eye, get my first glimpse of a bear! After about 30 minutes of doubting if I saw a bear or not, I see the bear coming in from behind the bait. The bear is good sized, I decide to try and take him. He comes in slowly and I take Tom's advice and let him settle in. Wait for him to present a shot, draw and shoot, watch in awe as my arrow striked the ground harmlessly next to the bear. Needless to way, that bear ran out of there lika a bat out of hell! The only thing I can say is I choked: plain and simple. Didn't focus on my target and missed. Stupid mistake. My first bear and I missed. After about 45 minutes of calling myself all kinds of not nice things, I caught movement to my left. Oh my goodness...a MUCH bigger bear, sitting 40 yards from the bait. I caught movement both times, because the bears are extrememly quiet, not making any noise at all.
Anyway, I let this bear come in to the bait twice before I even tried to draw. The first time I drew back he heard my movement and bolted. He cam back a third time really slow, came into the stand halfway between me and the bait, sat down looking right at me. The bait's only 6 yards, 7 yards, tops, I was just a little nervous. "Dont' choke, Roomie". Luckily he was more interested in the bait, not me. Tried to draw again. He grabbed some bait and took off. I waited 20 minutes, hoping he woudl come back. He finally did. This time, he didn't look at me, went right to the bait and started eating. I was waiting, bow ready , he finally gave me a shot. I drew very slowly, focused on the opposite shoulder, released, wham!! The arrow was there, buried to the fletching, right behind the shoulder. The bear ran away. I'm watching, waiting for him to crash, he makes 6o yards, stops, but doesn't fall. Walks out of sight. Doubt creeps in: was the shot good? Why didn't he crash? Oh man!
I wait for 1 1/2 hours befgore climbing down. I pick up blood in the first 5 yards, it looks very good. Follow for another 3o yards, find the fletch end of my arrow. Lots of blood, follow to where I saw the bear start to walk: lots of blood. It's almost 9:00, I decide to back off because I don't like the idea of following a wounded bear. I get to the truck and wait for dark to pick up JC. I pick up JC, ask him if he saw anything. He says yes and asked me the same. I tell him what happened and he says everything will be fine. Back at camp, lots of stories, everybody says it sounds good, My roommate is very confident.

I didn't sleep well that night, wondering about the shot. Finally Tom says lets go track your bear. First we have to go pick up Steve's bear. Steve's bear was very nice. Tom, Lloyd, Bowdoc, Steve and I finally get to my stand. I tell them exactly what happened, we pick up the blood trail and follow to where I stopped. From there, the blood trail was easy, 20 yards from where I stopped lay my bear. The range of emotions is incredible. I had my first bear ever. I took it with equipment I made. The only think on my equipment I didn't make was the 145 gr eclipse broadhead.
After much hand shaking, back slapping and picture taking the real work begins.
My bear weighed 197 pounds, was one of the three taken on this trip with selfbows. Next year I plan on having a stone point on my arrows.
This trip was amazing for me. I haven't hunted with this many wonderful people ever! Thank you all very much for giving me memories I'll never forget.

Said he was taking a bow anyway and was going to try and hook up with Doug Campbell for a few hours to trade knife making info.......I'm on my way back to Ontario, leaving here on Monday pm or Tuesday am, this time for 'Bou.
