Well I'd like to thank Bernie for the preview.
Got in the stand at 5:45 am and sat till 10:30am. froze my butt off. did'nt see a thing. went back at 2pm and shoot my first ever with recuve at 4:15. Got full penatration but the arrow stayed in the bear as he ran off. I waited 30 min and got down but could find no blood. went home and waited 2 hrs and got a buddy and his dog and went back. 30 yds into the trail the blood was pouring good. Found him about 80yds from the stand. Arrow enter on the right side between the5th and 6th rib from the back and came out the left ribcage 3 ribs from the front. Shoot was 8 yds from about 10 ft high. i would have expected more blood from the get go. Magnus I 2 blade(I put my razor caps back on since) CX 350 full length, Dakota recurve by Rick Welch, 59@28. Kanati hip quiver by John Dill. He's not a monster bear for my area but he is my first and I'm tickled to death. thanks for looking.

Yep, eastern Carolina has got some monster black bears. I think the new world record may come from there. Good job, on a good bear!

I am so dang jealous!!!! I have always wanted to get a bear, Good for you!!!!
Thanks for sharing :clapper:

My pleasure, buddy. I love it - he's a beauty, Don. I'm still as excited for you today as I was last night when you called to tell me about it. My only one was when I was still using a compound (in Maine) - so I'm still jealous too but very happy for you. I was going to say the same about the blood trail on bears that "hunt it" said. It takes a while/ways for it to soak through the fat and hair.

way to go. :clapper:

Congrats :bigsmyl:

That is awesome, There are not many killed with bow here let alone trad equipment.
-
That is a great bear! I have been sitting on a spot that we have seen a 3 or 4 hundred crossing the rock road. Also seen a sow with a large cub there but those two are off the hit list.
I have yet to get one with a bow so I am keeping my fingers crossed. Glad to see someone is whacking them!
Nice job,
Jason

Congrats i love those black bear stories!! Joe

Can you bait bear in NC now? I just moved from Eastern NC to Kansas 2 yrs ago and was just curious. I would like to go back home in a couple of years to bear hunt.
-
captain kirk will be @#@#$ you shot his bear. I would love to shoot a bear. congratulations
-
LOL - so will John Dill - I think that is the Bear he "tagged" before the season opened, by virtue of stepping all in the Bear's scat, the night we hunted with Don, a week or so ago - :biglaugh:
-
You're right Bernie....poop piles everywhere!
-
no baiting in NC. Guy shot a 595lber yesterday with rifle about 5 miles from my house. I'd only shoot one that big if I knew for sure he would die by my gamble. thanks for the nice comments. Don

congradulations on a good hunt Don!.

-
Congrats
-
Don,
Please tell us more about how you hunt bears here in eastern N.C.. Since we can't bait, how in the world do you do it? I hunted the Croatan area for several years and the only bears I ever saw were a couple we pushed out with dogs or the ones grazing in the cornfield in the Sanctuary area about 1/2 mi. from legal land.
How's it done?
-
Hey Tom. 1st let me say I don't claim to be a bear expert at all. This was the first bear i've shot with my bow. I killed one with a gun a few years ago. I live in an area that is loaded with bear. I bet I've seen 25 since last may. not on stand, but just driving to and from work. On my way to the Hickory shoot this year I saw a monster 2miles up the road from where I live. He was in the ditch trying to cross the road and I thought it was one of my friends cows out. I slowed down and stopped with him right there. trying to get my camera out and he wheeled back in the pines. when I drove off, I looked in my rearview and he was in the road. This Bear had no legs, which means to me he would go over 500 easy. The creek that runs behind my house flows into the Trent river and that into the neuse. On a hard, or few days south west wind the water blows out into the Pamlico sound. the creek gets real low and I've seen tracks and scat where they will feed on sunken acorns which now are not sunken. This bear came right down the creek bank feeding along and lucky or not, he made himself stop about 8 yards from me. No magic, and I may never shoot another, but I will be back in that swamp again next year for sure. I know a guy who has shot a couple by seeing them on long plulp wood roads and stalking them. give me a call if you got any more questions. good luck. Don
-
One more quick thing. If you can find a bunch of what I call bay bushes. They will feed on the berries and you can tell they have been there because they will break the limbs down just like the lightning has hit them. Also as my Dad always told me when he was catching fish and I wasn't , You gotta hold your mouth right. LOL.
-
Tom
Keep at them bear's you will get a chance.
-
Thanks for the info., Don.
John,
It's been a long time since I stomped in the Croatan. I actually gave up hunting there because I never saw a darn thing - except with dogs. And I surely did my share of walking in the deep woods, too.
I spent most of my time around Great Lake and the area known as the "rice ground".
-
Don, I see that the quiver hood's stitching is largely decorative, as there is a rubber band holding it together. Is the rubber band standard factory equipment, or is that an aftermarket item?
;)
Nice bear, too! :smileystooges: :D
-
Killie
If you want a Kanati Bow quiver.....all you got to do is ask(LOL) :p :D
-
-
Yes Killie, I ran out of plastic wire ties and had to use a rubber band in a pinch. Got to call Linny Rock and get another supply. Don
-
..and ask, and ask, and beg... :D :jumper: ;)
-
Killie
What color? What model?....
Don
I think Lennys down near your place with the mint jelly.....
-
John, I hope he brought some Oreo's to spread it on. LOL. worked on your hide another 3 hrs today. You might have been better off to get It done commercialy. DB
