Title: Daily Double
Post by: Missouri CK on October 27, 2008, 12:29:00 AM
Well, I had one of those magical mornings today.  This story starts with a visit from Charlie Lamb who had come over for a hunt last week.  We didn't kill any deer but we did a lot of scouting and came up with some good new spots. I've got the poison ivy to prove it.  I showed him my honey hole spot to see if he thought I need to move the stand. He gave my selection the thumbs up which made me feel even that much more confident about its potential.  I had waited this fall for a Northwest wind to hunt this particular stand and I finally got it today.  I had does in the soybean field behind me at daybreak so the day was already off to a great start.  They started to move off after 15-20 minutes so I tried a couple of can calls to see if I could get their curiosity up.  They didn't seem that interested and continued moving off but about three minutes later I heard movement and saw a deer moving my way.  It was a buck....it was a nice buck....head down moving my way with a purpose.  Within about 10 seconds he was standing quarting to me at about 10 yards.  He suddenly spooked and moved laterally about 5-7 yards and stopped.  I was already on him and the arrow was away in seconds.  I never really visualized the inpact but it felt good and he looked hurt as he busted out of their low to the ground.

I promised myself I would give him an hour but I found myself figeting so I decided to lower my bow down after 45 minutes.  I went to grab my backback only to see several does back out at the field edge not 30 yards from me. Slowly I pulled the bow back up into the stand.  They milled around somewhat nervously in the field for another 20 minutes and then worked back down towards me again.  One of the last does in the group came into the woods a little lower than the rest....at 15 yards I let the magnus 4 blade go.  Actually I let it go about a split second before I settled in on her exactly like I would have liked to have done and the shot was high and spined her.  I ended up putting another arrow into her and finishing the deal.

I then took up the trail of the buck which provided decent blood which was of good color but he went a lot further than I thought he should.  After about 300 yards I decided to back out and call Tom Porter "Gatekeeper" to help with the tracking.  I also needed someone else to calm my nerves at this point.  Fourty yards after we took up the trail together, where I had left it last, we found the buck at the bottom of a ditch.

One heck of a morning that I will not soon forget.

I would say that is about as good as it gets...wow what a day.  I'm hoping this weekend brings the same!

How do you like you Badlands back?  I bought a 2200 this spring and love it!  I pack my Double Bull in and out along with other items.

A couple more interesting things about this hunt are that I had several pictures of this buck on my game cameras from this summer and fall.

If you notice the numb-type sticker point coming off his left base in the summer picture, it shows up again as an odd shaped hook on the pedicle of his antler.  Reminds me of the finger like roots coming out of a corn stalk.  Pretty neat!

My brother saw a good buck last weekend out of a stand that is very close to the one where I killed this buck.  I’m guessing it was the same buck and he was hanging out in this area.

I need to thank a couple of guys that helped make this hunt happen.  My father in law Gary Norris rents this ground for extra hay with the added bonus that we get to hunt as well.  I try to help him with the hay as much as I can because I sure enjoy hunting out there.    Thanks Gary.

Tom Porter “Gatekeeper” also helped me find this buck.  I had backed off from the blood trail after it went too far in my opinion.  The blood was steady but not really plentiful and he had covered a lot of ground from the point of impact. He jumped across a ditch and I didn’t feel good about the fact that he had been able to do that, so I called Tom and backed out.  We met up and then worked up the doe before setting back out on the blood trail.  He agreed that a little extra time wasn’t going to hurt anything.  We found the buck 30 yards from the ditch where I had backed off the trail.  It was great to have someone to celebrate with when we found him.

It was a fun day and I sure did appreciate the help of both guys when it came time to butcher up the meat.  Now I’m off to the taxidermist and trying to track down someone to make me some deer sticks.

Thanks for all the replies.

P.S. the bow I shoot is a Zipper Extreme (Norb got me started with them), I was using a beman shaft with a Stos head on the buck and a Magnus I 4 blade on the doe.  The total arrow weight is around 670 grains.  I have followed the single bevel vs multiblade debates this summer, but I admittedly have a split personality when it comes to broadheads.  Both performed well yesterday but I’m planning on doing more research as the fall continues.    ;)

Hey Chris,
It's always nice to help someone get started on a thing as great as bowhunting.  I got my start from Lamb and I can only begin to count the times that I just walked into the woods with my bow and could have cared less about killing anything.  There is just a nice feeling inside knowing that I could if I wanted to or needed to.

Look at the great guys you have met already because of the bow and arrow.
I started with a great friend and I pass it to you so you can pass it to your two sons.  Your adventures are only begining.

By the way,  Nice Buck !  Gary  >>>---->

Chris,

I am glad I could be there to help. I too had a great time.

I would like to add to Chris’s story by saying this was the fattest deer I have ever seen! There were places on this buck that had a layer of fat that was 1/2” or more thick. It was incredible. The doe was also in great shape she too had a reserve of fat on her but it was nothing like the chunky buck. It was obvious that the buck had a lot of lying around time.
