There has been a lot of interest in hunting with stone point. I've been hunting with the points I've made on and off for the last 5 years or so.
So far, this year has gotten off to a good start.
Here is an 8 point taken with selfbow/stone point on Oct. 2

And here is the point I used on him, Got about 15" of penetration.

Here is a young doe I got this morning with a complete pass through.

And here is the point I used on her.

both deer went only about 70 yards before going down.

Thats cool. What an honor to harvest an animal with everthing you made yourself.

Bondo, I,m trying to kill a deer with my own stonepoints and my osage selfbow, do you have a tips on point style or hafting. Sure hoping I can get a chance to try My gear out an gain my own experience but for now open to any suggestions or advice. Points- texas tabs an obsidian. Hafting with artifical sinew an epoxy.

The doe this morning was number six with stone for me. I have used two different point style. The cahokia or side knotched and corner knotched. I feel like I get better all around penetration with the corner knotched. As far as points go, most any style will work, as long as it is sharp, I don't like any serration on the edge, it has a tendence to "grab" on hair and bone.
As far as halfting goes, I like the natural stuff. It's hard to beat pine pitch mixed with a little bees wax and carcoal. Then wrap with long backstrap sinew soaked in hide glue. Excelant holding power, and easy to change out points if you need to.

Thanks Bondo for all your info. Later Bob

That is great. So many guys roaming the woods with scoped rifles, and you are putting more meat in the freezer than most of them.

That's great Bondo. I haven't made it that far in my own regression; still hunting with steel. Some day!

Thanks guys, anyone else hunting with stone this year.

Very cool! Like others have said, it must give you a real sense of accomplishment to use equipment that you made yourself. Congrats!
-
Congratulations! I've been hunting with stone for 3 years now but haven't had an opportunity. Been close a few times.
Nice shooting! Pat

Well, I have some chert points that I got in a trade last winter. They are mounted on steel adaptors, maybe try them out on skinny carbon arrows with my '63 Kodiak 45#. The 3 largest points are 160-170 gr, 2" x 7/8". Not primitive by any means... but have always wanted to go one step further in the "upfront challenge". Gotta get close and make a good clean shot.
Thanks for showing us how it's done the primitive way... nice deer too!

Looking to make some more meat this year with stone, started last year, don't ever plan to go back to steel, this is just way too cool, and deadly! (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y4/littletree4/DSC00213.jpg)

Two Burlington, Wisconsin Hixton, and some unknown flint on tamarack shafting. 550 grain average(135 points), 46-47 spine out of a 54# osage selfbow I like to use that ribbed point hot melt for hafting, then back strap sinew and a coat of tru-oil.

Outstanding!

Way to go.
Just an FYI for outbackbob48 make sure your head meets your state regulations. Some styles of head are considered to be "barbed" and are therefor illegal in some states and some states don't allow stone heads at all. Just be sure your setup is ligit.
